Duke really kept it close for the first half of the game, but our offense really took off in the second half, and we all just did what we needed to do. I got absolutely toasted on a play in the first quarter when I blew my coverage.
Coach Beemer was pissed, but that in the heat of battle pissed. I blitzed when I was responsible for the tight end and he beat us for like 35 yards. Luckily we stuffed them right there, I think they got a field goal though.
I really didn't like the fact that Duke was hanging around with us for so long, but our offensive changes in the second half caught them entirely by surprise and it showed. We put up 21 to their...none haha. Every change we made for the second half was brilliant.
This game at the college level is so much more then just going out there and playing. It's about match-ups and recognizing weaknesses compared to your strengths. I'm still glad I came to Va Tech, and it felt good to get our first ACC win.

I had a good game. We're only 5 games in and I'm almost half way to 100 tackles. I've set that as my goal for the first season, that and 6 sacks. Half way there too. I'd love to get a pick, but if I can keep taking running backs down in the back field I'll be happy. Next week is Boston College. I hate Boston in general, but for some reason I really hate the Eagles.
Looking forward to a second straight ACC victory hopefully. Oh crap! Got another date this week. This time with some TA from my Field Biology class. She's 22. Nice. haha

Re: Hammertime! Connor Davies, a Outside Linebackers Perspective
Thanks man. Yeah it was a tough game for us. We had the lead pretty much the entire way. We were up 13-0 but they just kept coming back and getting great field position. What really killed us was a fumble on their 20 in the 4th. Looked like we'd put it away, and bam they drive the field on us.Comment

Late for class, pretty sure I broke my thumb yesterday, but who needs thumbs to lay out QBs?

I just feel a bit unlucky so far this year. Minor aches and pains really. The biggest thing so far has been this thumb, but no way I'll miss any time with it. The trainers want to put a splint and a lot of tape on it for the game, I might not be able to pick anything off, but I don't think I have this season yet anyway. Lol. I'll be out there no matter what though.Comment

Re: Hammertime! Connor Davies, a Outside Linebackers Perspective
Thanks. Graduating in December to get into school for spring practice was big in terms of getting used to the system here at Va Tech. Our coaches have a rating system out of 100 and I last time I checked I was at an 88. As far as the other guys in the linebacking core Barquell Rivers at middle is a beast. I know he's only a sophomore but he makes so many plays for us it's sickening. We all look up to the seniors like Cam Martin at the right side and Cody Grimm who plays every where.
As far as speed goes, I'm the fastest hands down. On the same scale of 100 I'm rated at 96. I'm one of the faster guys on the team for sure.
For anyone else curious I added that information to the front page of this blog.

I've been falling behind in classes, so I spent most of the week studying. I think I got to the gym maybe twice all week, but I need to keep the GPA up.

Another W October 11, 2009 - 10:40 am Posted by AllstarMe
It seems no matter who we play our defense is solid. We moved back into the top 10 last week because of some mild upsets above us, who really cares though? We won't be playing for a National Title at 8th overall.
BC is always a big game for Virginia Tech, and we absolutely dominated them. I felt lost again for the first half. Just kind of going through the motions hoping to make a play, but not really doing anything to get something done. I think Coach Beemer realized that and pulled me aside in the locker room.
He told me that when I start to feel a bit lost, to just focus on my responsibilities and the rest will work itself out. Every time I talk to him I feel a lot better about what's going on with everything. Each week I know I made a better and better choice to come here over anywhere else.

It felt good to get after the quarterback again. Last game I spent a lot of my time in man coverage or a flat zone, but this week we blitzed, a lot. They have a young qb and we really wanted to make him stressed and we did.
Next week we face Georgia Tech and their option attack. I'm drooling.

Look at the pain in his eyes, lol That's great.

Who Better? October 18, 2009 - 10:40 am Posted by AllstarMe
I absolutely had my worst statistical game as a Hokie, but who cares? We took care of business against a higher ranked opponent, and hopefully put ourselves in the drivers seat for the ACC.
That loss to Miami hurt us, but we're 6-1 now and have some big wins. Beating Alabama in the opener and now crushing Georgia Tech on their home field really make us feel pretty good about everything. They had one big play, and the rest of the game they really struggled to move the ball against us.
I only got four tackles, but they ran to the left side all day long. Seriously, I think they ran right two or three times the entire game. I can't blame them, being afraid of a freshman, hah.
They had one run for 80 yards, and on the rest of them they had 46 yards on 21 carries, that's pretty good. Their passing game was awful too. Not to mention their third downs, but all that matters is we beat them. We proved we are the better team.

I picked up that sack late in the game, I think it was on their last drive on a 3rd down. Doesn't matter when it is, it stopped a drive and I was happy to oblige. We have next week off now, then we get North Carolina at home, I like having time to prepare.

Coach gave us a few days off after the win. Told us to study. Don't think so.
