      Appalachian State vs. Duke

      1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
      Duke 21 21 10 7 59
      APP 7 21 0 7 35

      Corso: Duke
      Kirk Duke

      1st Quarter
The Moutaineers go nowhere on their first drive, losing 8 yards and going 3 and out. Then the Blue Devils quickly answer with an unstoppable running game to put up the first touchdown with a 21 yard run. After what appeared to be a promising drive for the Moutaineers, a miraculous intereception took that hope away. It was 1st and 10, and Edwards connected with Washington on a huge pass, only for him to drop the ball. Miraculously, Duke's safety grabbed the ball literally just before it hit the ground and returned it to APP's 25. Two plays later on a 24 yard carry, Duke went up 14-0. However, APP knew they could now move the ball, and they pulled a perfect HB Screen for a 53 yd touchdown. Duke would not allow APP to get any momentum, as they quickly answered with a 28 yard reception. APP's defense seemed hopeless the entire 1st quarter.

      2nd Quarter
Duke continued their offensive prowess with a 7 yard rush for a touchdown to begin the 2nd quarter. App. State however would not go down without a fight. They began their next drive hot, moving down the field. Then they got slowed down by a sack, but they recovered. Then on 3rd and Goal, a 4 yard touchdown pass brought the game within two scores. What seemed would be another Duke scoring possession, APP forced a fumble around their own 10 yard line to stop Duke. The Mountaineers went 3 and out after the fumble, giving Duke the ball back, which allowed them another touchdown, this time a 41 yard pass. The Mountaineers were determined to keep the game in reach, returning the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to come back within two scores, 35-21. Duke would of course, only come back with a 4 yard touchdown pass. Appalachian State simply refused to go down though, this time forcing a fumble as Duke attempted to return a punt, and not only did APP recover, but they took it for a touchdown with 0:03 left in the half.

      HALFTIME STATS
      DUKE | APP
      Score 42/28
      Rushing 18-118-3/3-(-12)
      Passing 18-280-3/15-191-2
      Turnovers 2/1
      T.O.P. 7:34/6:26

      3rd Quarter
A very questionable pitch my App. State allows Duke to get a turnover and turn it in to 3 points. App. State was able to force Duke to punt twice in the 3 rd quarter, they then took the ball down field. Only for Edwards to pitch the ball straight to a Duke linebacker. Then it went downhill from there, as Edwards was pressured into throwing an interception, which Duke gladly returned to go 52-28.

      4th Quarter
It seemed as if the Mountaineer's QB Edwards two costly turnovers in the 3rd Quarter had taken the fight out of the rest of the team. The offense no longer could move the ball, and Duke was back to scoring at will, putting together another drive that ended with a 8 yard run for a touchdown. Edwards was determined to redeem himself, as he took off on 3rd and 2 for a 20 yard run. A few plays later he ran the ball himself into the endzone with 4:08 left in the game. The ensuing kickoff was an onside kick, and the Mountaineers were able to recover it. Edwards had a guy wide-open down the middle of the field, but he hesitated, threw the ball late, and Duke picked the ball off, ending APP's chance for a comeback. Duke ran the ball effectively running out the rest of the clock to take home a victory.

      GAME RECAP
From the moment the game started, Appalachian State was playing catch up the entire time. Just minutes into the first quarter they were already down 14-0, and from then on they never got back into it. One positive they can pull from this huge loss, is that they know they can make plays. There were several instances that App. State looked like they would make a comeback, making key stops and turnovers. However, these key plays were spread out too much. They went into half down 42-28. Suddenly, the Mountaineers looked to have gained control, stopping Duke twice on 3rd Down, then everything went downhill as Edwards turned the ball over twice on a bad pitch and a bad pass. Duke then scored a few points to take a commanding lead. Once again, App. State began a comeback, stopping Duke, then going for a quick touchdown. They then kicked an onside and recovered it, and moved the ball down the field quickly and easily. Then again, Edwards threw the ball too late to an open receiver, which gave Duke the final possession as they ran the clock out.

        Appalachian State at Eastern Michigan

        1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final
        APP 7 6 3 6 22
        EMU 7 7 0 9 23

        Corso: APP
        Kirk EMU

        1st Quarter
Winning the coin toss, App. State had elected to receive the kickoff, which turned out to be a great idea, as T. Washington returned it 86 yards for a touchdown! However, this explosiveness did not go much further, on the offensive side of the ball. They were able to keep EMU in check defensively, however, App. State threw an intereception for a touchdown, allowing EMU to tie up the ball game. On the final offensive play of the first quarter Armanti Edwards went down with a sprained elbow and will be out for 1 week.

        2nd Quarter
EMU's first offensive drive of the 2nd Quarter turned out to be a great one, as Priest took the hand-off up the middle for a 79 yard touchdown run. App. State's backup QB, Presley, starts off his first drive with an interception inside they're on 50 yard line. Luckily, the defense steps up and forces a fumble to regain possession of the ball. After a very lackluster effort offensively, App. State was able to put the ball in the endzone on a 16 yard pass from Presley to Jorden. However, they failed to tie the game with a missed extra point with 0:39 left in the half.

        HALFTIME STATS
        APP | EMU
        Score 13 14
        Rushing 7 - 27 13 - 125
        Passing 10 - 112 4 - 30
        Turnovers 2 1
        T.O.P. 5:40 4:20

        3rd Quarter
McDuffie helped App. State to a good start in the 3rd, intercepting the 2nd pass of the quarter. They were able to capitilize off this turnover with a 41 yard field goal. Forced into a 4 and 1 midway through the 3rd, EMU decided to go for it, completing a 6 yard pass to the TE in the flats. However, this would only lead to an interception in the endzone by LeGree. APP does nothing with this turnover, punting the ball on a 3 and out to end the quarter.

        4th Quarter
With 2:28 left in the 4th Quarter, EMU kicked a 43 yard field goal to take a 17-16 lead over APP. The game wasn't looking good for APP, as they were quickly forced to a 3rd and 17 right after letting EMU take a 1 point lead. That's when APP took a risk-reward play by calling a Half-Back Screen. It worked to perfection and led to a 73 yard touchdown. APP would go for a 2-point conversion, without any success, and lead 22-17 with 1:53 left in the game. EMU, trying to come back, fumbled the ball with 1:19 left. This would've ended the game, but a coach's challenge gave EMU the ball back. EMU could not convert not even one 3rd Down conversion, however, they converted two 4th down conversions and score a touchdown with 0:13 left in the game. Their 2-point conversion was unsuccessful, and they led with a 23-22 lead. Only able to get two plays off, APP's QB Presley threw 2 incompletions giving EMU a 23-22 victory.

        GAME RECAP
Appalachian State came into the game knowing they could win, and returning the game's 1st kickoff put a lot of confidence in them. However, their offense wasn't able to do much, and if that wasn't enough, they're starting QB went down at the end of the 1st Quarter. The game was a defensive struggle, the entire time, neither team being able to the move ball very well. Everytime EMU did move the ball, they turned the ball over, every other time they never could move it. EMU was 0-8 on 3rd Down, but 4-5 on 4th Down, which eventually led to their victory. Appalachian State's missed extra point in the 2nd Quarter proved costly, as they ended up losing the game 23-22.
