    Deserted in the Desert

MLB Vontaze Burfict leads a Sun Devil defense that ranked 13th in total defense last season.

While it's not quite do-or-die time in the desert, Dennis Erickson might want to keep the governor on speed dial just in case.

After beginning his Sun Devil career 8-0, Erickson has slumped to an 11-18 mark, creating a great deal of anxiety around Tempe. The savior for a brief period of time, many have begun wondering if the coach still has what it takes to turn things around. Last year's eight losses were the most by the school since 1994, a tipping point that's going to make 2010 a crossroads year at Arizona State.

          CONFERENCE SHAKEUP
Arizona State, Utah, and others are on
the move in the latest conference shift

(AP) — So the Texas Longhorns stayed put and the Big Twelve didn't dissolve seemingly overnight, but the Pac-10 wasn't out of ideas just yet and quickly moved onto plan B.

Looking to improve the quality of their conference, in football particularly, and not being able to expand the size of their conference, the Pac-10 settled on just replacing a team already in the conference.

Winning two BCS bowl games in the past five years would put any program "on the map", and now the Utah Utes have used that success to upgrade from the Mountain West Conference.

After a week of meetings at their headquarters in Walnut Creek, California, Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott and the other presidents came to a conclusion. Utah would join the conference, but at the expense of another school.

It came down to a vote between the ten school presidents with the majority vote being the final decision.

Arizona and Arizona State banded together and voted against Washington State, however none of the other schools felt the same way and the remaining eight voted against the Sun Devils.

The tribe had spoken, Arizona State was on the outside looking in.

After the decision was announced, the dominoes began to fall.

The Mountain West replaced Utah with UTEP from Conference USA forcing C-USA to find a replacement team.
C-USA was able to talk Army into joining the conference again, but in the East division. With unbalanced divisions, Memphis was shifted over to the West to fill the hole left by UTEP.

Arizona State is now an independent in the college football world, Deserted in the Desert.
