Re: Above and Beyond-The David Sanders Story

My first year, was, let just say........forgetful. I only threw for 1795 yards and 15 touchdowns and threw 9 interceptions, I only thrown 7 interception during my whole career at Navy Prep. To make matter worse, we were 5-7, made no bowl appearances, I was considering transferring to Navy. They won 4 games at Navy but at least I wouldn't be the disgrace of the family. Transferring to Navy was complicated, I would have to miss out on one year of football, stay an extra year so I could get graduate from Navy, and also they didn't accept anyone, especially someone with a future in football that might drop out of Navy if things go well on the field. My dad also did what he said he wouldn't do, he stop talking to me. After the first few weeks, they stop coming on week-ends, sent a cheap Hallmark letter to me on Holidays. They went to Switzerland that year, with Coach Dean for Christmas. I spend my Christmas doing overdue projects and watching other people play bowl games. I taught of all the bad decisions that I had made in life, this was one of them. I lived only two hours from my parents, but I couldn't go home, my friends stop talking to me, my college teammates hated me since well, I didn't turn out to be the hotshot everyone said I was. I even heard one of the Maryland radio host call me a "Recruit Bust", I don't even know if that existed, well, I was down the path to be one of the worst recruit bust of all time.

After throwing 11 interceptions in my second year, I transferred to Navy. Football wasn't for me, and I knew it. I graduated at the top of my class, actually played football in my senior year as a second string running back. I rushed for 902 yards, no joke. The starter, Warren Jenkins, rushed for 2998 yards and 24 TD's. We finished 6-6 though, and he wasn't a finalist for any award. I graduated as a Naval Officer, got sent to two tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. After 5 years of serving my country, when I was sent back home and put in reserve, E:60 called me and asked me for an interview.

The NFL and Navy,Army and Air Force have always had a relationship. Before it was the military stealing the NFL's players to fight wars now its the opposite, the NFL is "stealing" future military officers and making them play in the NFL. Well, military officers will tell you that it's their duty for them to serve their country, NFL officials will tell you that the players can play football if they want to, and not have to serve two years before entering the draft. With the CBA expiring this year, and Air Force running back DeSean Carter is the main topic, the near 3000 yard rusher is a highly touted prospect, the projected 1st overall pick has to serve 2 years before entering the draft, he might not still be alive after two years, but at the same time, he doesn't want to be dishonor. DeSean doesn't have the right of freedom of speech, if he says he wants to play in the NFL right away, he will be dishonor, if he says he wants to join the Air Force first, his draft stock will seriously drop, so we brought in someone who has nothing to worry about, while he is still a Navy officer, he is well honored and respected, they use to call him "The Chief", he is David James Sanders
          .
          James:
Growing up, I wanted to be an Naval officer, it was in my blood, my family has a great relationship with Navy, it was my destiny. As I got older, I started winning more high school football games, I won MVP twice, was a five star prospect, I couldn't walk away, I went to Maryland in the hopes of becoming a professional quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts. At first it was easy, it seem like I made the right pick, but after losses, interceptions, sacks and the constant doubt of whether you made the right pick, it doesn't seem worth it. I didn't talk to my family for almost two years, I was called names, lost all of my HS friends, I ask myself, is a shot at making over 70 million dollars a year worth it?No. You think it is, it seems like an easy decision, but it ain't. I eventually transferred to Navy after my sophomore year, which was rare, most transfers are freshman, they allowed me though. Didn't play football for two years, during my last year of eligibility to play, I play as the second string running back, the quarterback position was taken, rushed for 900 yards. It ended quite well, had to stay for one more year so I could graduate but it was good. I rebuild my relationship with my father, but not everyone is lucky. I could of ended up flipping burgers or worse, now I'm a decorated Naval officer, you know, you gotta make the right choice, as a quarter back, I develop a zone technique. I split the field into zones, since I help make the playbook in HS and was the play caller, I always had at least one receiver in each zone on the field, so this way, whichever defense that defense plays, they can't stop us because every defense has a hole and I usually find that hole. This is how life is, but I was the defense that time, I didn't prepare for that hole, that mishap, that risk. You can't do that in life constantly, you may be able to get away with it once or twice, but you can't live like that. You have to be the offense, you have the options available but you have to make the right pick, the right choice. You have to go with instincts, not with your emotions, not with your fantasies, but with your sole and brain, make the smart choice but you have to be happy. If being a 4th string running back makes you happier than being a Naval officer, then go, I can't deny that. I think the 2 year ban should be removed. It's up to them, they shouldn't be dishonor, they should always have the chance to go back.

          Thank you.
