    Week 14 Preview

Buffalo Bills (8-4) @ San Diego Chargers (4-8)

    Forecast: 72°

    Sunday, December 11, 4:05PM
    Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA

    Injury Report
    Buffalo Bills:
[Probable] DE Deontae Knight - Bicep
[Doubtful] FB Trip Allen - Thumb
[OUT] LG Andy Levitre - Broken Collarbone - 4 weeks
[OUT] LB Thomas Howard - Torn Tricep - Out for season

    San Diego Chargers:
[OUT] LB Shawne Merriman - Dislocated Hip - 4 weeks
[OUT] LB Shaun Phillips - Torn Tricep - Out for season
[OUT] LT Anthony Collins - Fractured Hip - Out for season

    Keys to the Game

    BUFSD
    Run All Day
The Chargers are missing their two best linebackers, the Bills need to take advantage of that with a heavy dose of Fred Jackson

    Air it Out
Phillip Rivers is a smarter quarterback than the ones that faced the Bills recently. The combination of Rivers and Jackson could make for a long day for Buffalo
    Gary Guyton
Guyton has been a one-man quarterback wrecking crew of late. Lebeau needs to start finding ways to get him on the field more often
    Control the Tempo
San Diego needs to beat the Bills at their own game; controlling the pace with a heavy running attack. Ryan Mathews needs to have a big day
    Limit Damage
It's inevitable that Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates will make plays, it's important for the Bills defense to bend but not break
    Force Pressure
If the Chargers can keep Matt Leinart thinking on his feet, there's a good chance they'll start forcing mistakes

    Coverage:

    Analyst Picks:

    Dan Marino

How about that Matt Leinart?! The Bills are rolling right now and although the Chargers will put up more of a fight than the Raiders, I expect this to be a decisive victory.

    Boomer Esiason

Yeah the Chargers have been such a disappointment this season, but when you lose your two biggest playmakers on defense it's hard to recover. Bills shouldd win this.

    Bill Cowher

Like Lebeau has been saying, this defense just keeps getting better. The Bills are playing lights out and I doubt this banged up Chargers team will serve as much of a speed bump.

    Shannon Sharpe

That was an impressive win last week for Buffalo, they clearly aren't taking this stretch of weak games lightly. They should win this one.

    James Brown

Well I guess this makes it unanimous, the struggling Chargers look like they're just in too deep.

Here's the code for it, a couple key things to pay attention to:
        - Where it says "float: right", the float I believe is what makes the text wrap around it, then you can change right to left or center if you want to change where the picture is positioned.
        - width: 320px -- Best to set this to whatever the picture's width is, otherwise your box can wind up smaller or bigger than the picture and it will look strange.

Let me know if you're able to get it working

Re: Unfinished Business: Buffalo Bills Story (Madden 11 Franchise)

          I'm Sorry Vince Jackson
Bills hold on to win close game, avoid upset

Vincent Jackson makes a one-handed catch for a touchdown in the first quarter.

SAN DIEGO, CA -- In what many assumed would be a Buffalo blowout, came a pleasant surprise in the form of a close, defensive battle. Unfortunately for Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers, the Buffalo Bills would come out on top thanks to 3 costly interceptions, including one in the red zone late in the 4th quarter.

Interceptions, like this one by Leodis McKelvin, ultimately decided the outcome of the game
Buffalo had trouble getting anything going on offense, as they were held to just 150 total yards. The San Diego front 7 did an exceptional job of creating pressure on Matt Leinart and stuffing the running holes to keep Fred Jackson to a humbling 55-yard performance. This feat was all the more impressive given the absence of star linebackers Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips. Unfortunately for San Diego, the Buffalo defense had some tricks of their own, forcing the aforementioned interceptions and keeping the San Diego offense from reaching the end zone after the early first quarter score.

Following the 50-yard field goal late in the 4th quarter by Nate Kaeding, the San Diego defense forced a quick three-and-out to force a Buffalo punt with a respectable 1:53 left on the clock. Dwight Lowery was able to return the punt from Brian Moorman to the San Diego 40 yard line, giving them favorable field position to score a touchdown or field goal to win it.

Marcus Stroud reaches Philip Rivers and earns his 10th sack of the season
Much to the dismay of San Diego fans, the opportunity was soon squandered after 4 poor passes from the arm of Philip Rivers gave the Buffalo the ball back to run out the clock.

The Bills had a few scares throughout the course of the game, losing safety Lawrence Wilson (knee), as well as linebackers Pisa Tinoisamoa (abdominal strain) and Paul Posluszny (bruised sternum) for periods of time in the game. Luckily, further examinations of each of them revealed no serious problems and the team is confident they will all be able to practice this week and play in upcoming rivalry game against the New York Jets. The Bills and Jets, who lost their second straight game last week at the hands of LeSean McCoy and a 4th quarter Eagles comeback, find themselves now tied for first place in the AFC East. The Patriots fell to 8-5 after being defeated by the Washington Redskins.

          Snap Shots

Vincent Jackson pulls in a catch on the sideline

Paul Posluszny gets helped off the field by a member of the training staff

Leodis McKelvin jumps Jackson's route for 1 of his 2 interceptions

Gary Guyton tosses Philip Rivers to the ground for his 9th sack of the season

Fred Jackson dives for the end zone and comes up just short

          Telford's Take:
Well... it wasn't pretty, but at least we got the job done. Just glad we came out of that stretch of games with wins. Hopefully we look sharper against the Jets this week. We need retribution for our last matchup, hopefully Leinart is able to remain composed against this talented secondary and doesn't suffer the same fate that Brian Brohm did.

            Coverage:

            Analyst Picks:

            Chris Berman

This Buffalo team has been impressively lately but I think Mark "Dirty" Sanchez and the Jets will prevail again like in week 9.

            Cris Carter

I don't know, I think Leinart is going to make better decisions than Brohm did, he's been good at avoiding mistakes, I think the Bills pull it out at home.

            Tom Jackson

This might be one of the toughest games to call all season, the Jets may have lost the last 2 games but they've still got the toughest defense on any given day. Bills are a young, talented team on the come-up, but the Jets have already established themselves as a team to beat.

            Keyshawn Johnson

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Bills were able to win this one, but my gut tells me the Jets take this. I'd hate to be going up against that secondary.

            Steve Young

It's me and you Cris, I like the fire this Buffalo defense has been playing with lately, I say they give the Jets D a run for their money tonight.

** FYI - Prior to the Jets game I upped the quarter length to the full 15 minutes as well as made changes to the sliders hoping to make the game harder after the 41-0 blowout spelled my 4th straight win.

I'll have the Jets game recap up shortly.

Also, I really like your chise, it's my favorite going with tomriddles Phins chise. I just hope my Patriots make it into the playoffs along with your Bills!!! Someone should get a Jets chise going, that way we got the whole AFC East in here.

                      Pouncing on an Opportunity
Bills capitalize on Jets mistakes, take division lead

A New York comeback is cut short as Torrell Troup recovers a fumble forced by Deontae Knight

BUFFALO, NY -- Maybe it was the heavy rain, combined with strong winds, two physical, top-ranked defenses, and a dash of divisional rivalry with playoff implications on the side. Whatever the recipe, it made for a sloppy, physical, and wildly entertaining display.

Darren McFadden scores to put the Bills up 20-10 late in the 3rd quarter
The action got started early as Mark Sanchez led the Jets offense down the field on their first possession before connecting with tight end Dustin Keller for the first score of the ballgame, similar to the week 9 matchup. Despite Roscoe Parrish returning the ensuing kickoff to the New York 35, the Bills offense could not capitalize on the opportunity and was forced to settle for a field goal. At the end of the first quarter, the Bills offense found themselves with a miserable 9 total yards on offense.

The offensive struggles would continue, as the game went to halftime a humble 10-6 defensive battle. However, Bills coach Dick Lebeau must have inspired his offense in the locker room, as they came out looking alive on their first drive of the second half, resulting in a Matt Leinart to Shawn Nelson connection for a touchdown. Later in the third quarter, the Buffalo defense imposed it's will on Sanchez, with Kyle Williams forcing a fumble recovered by Dwan Edwards at the New York 8 yard line. It took just two plays for Leinart to connect with Darren McFadden to put the Bills up 20-10.

Kris Jenkins bats down a pass for one of many Matt Leinart incompletions

As the game progressed to the fourth quarter, it looked like the Jets were poised to make a comeback. It seemed like everything was going in New York's favor; Sanchez led the offense on drive after drive, Bryan Thomas took a Fred Jackson fumble to the Buffalo 15-yard line, and Gary Guyton granted the Jets offense extra life with a facemask penalty on what would have made it 4th down. Unfortunately for the Jets, they weren't able to punctuate any drives with a touchdown and had to settle for a couple short Leigh Tiffin field goals.

To make matters worse for New York, in the waning seconds of regulation, Jackson busted a 65 yard run for a touchdown while simply attempting to run out the clock. In the end, it was the costly turnovers and inability to finish once reaching the red zone that cost the Jets the victory. Statistically, New York clearly outperformed Buffalo, even though both quarterbacks struggled to complete even 40% of their passes, possibly due to a combination of weather and stingy defense.

The Bills can clinch a playoff birth with a victory next week against the Denver Broncos, while the Jets take on the New England Patriots in a matchup with both division and wild card implications.

                      Telford's Take:
I don't know how we won this game, honestly.... But hey, I can't complain. We're sitting pretty right now and it looks like we've got a good chance to not only make the playoffs but to win the division, possibly even a first round bye. However, we're not going to count our chickens before they hatch. We face a hungry Denver team that's fighting for a playoff spot this week, so we'll have to be at our best. Luckily we close the season out on a lighter note in Miami, hopefully we can get out ahead early enough to rest our starters in that one.

Thanks man that means a lot, I'll give yours a look as well. and honestly, it's looking like there will be 3 AFC East teams in the playoffs this year, I'll have to double check on the AFC North standings though next time I fire up the PS3.

                          Analyst Picks:

                          Rod Woodson

I just don't see how you can vote against the Bills with the way they're playing right now. Early in the season analysts were saying they couldn't beat a winning team, now that they beat the Chiefs and Jets on this 5-game winning streak, I think they've proven they can.

                          Marshall Faulk

I love a game like this, 2 of the best running backs in the league in a game that's sure to see a lot of action on the ground, smash-mouth football at it's finest. I think the Bills defense propels them to victory in this one.

                          Steve Mariucci

It's remarkable what Lebeau and his staff have been able to do with this Bills team. It's a complete reversal from the mess we saw on the field last season. It's almost hard to believe but it looks like they're here to stay, at least for this season.

                          Jamie Dukes

Buffalo's looking like a great team, but I think Denver has a lot more to play for at this point. The Bills pretty much have a playoff spot in the bag, but the Broncos have got to be desperate. This game is gonna come down to who wants it more and that's got to be Denver if they stand a chance at making the playoffs.

                          Rich Eisen

That's one way to look at it, Jamie. I'm going to take the safe pick here, I think the Bills have just shown to be a more complete team. With Leinart not making the mistakes Brohm and McCoy made under center, they're not giving games away anymore. They're rewarding that excellent defense.

                            All I Want For Christmas...

Posted by Chris Brown on December 23, 2011 – 2:14 pm

As the Christmas Eve matchup between the Denver Broncos and our beloved Buffalo Bills draws closer, there is only one item on my proverbial Christmas list. It's not the new Rolex I've had my eye on since March or the new laptop I so desperately need. No no, the only thing on my list is a Buffalo victory.

See the thing about this wish is, if granted, it would bear many other gifts for many people. With a win this Saturday, the Buffalo Bills would clinch their first playoff birth since 1999. Sure, making the playoffs looks like a sure thing at this point, but if Buffalo's history has taught us anything, there's no such thing as a certainty in Orchard Park (Music City Miracle, anyone?).

Around the league, there are many who question whether or not this Bills team will be able to win games once they find themselves in the playoffs. Who can blame them, though, especially with our track record. Tack on the fact that just a year ago our quarterback found himself being released by a team who's starter was Derek Anderson. But you know what? I'm happy with a mere playoff birth at this point. You've got to walk before you can crawl, and as long as we're walking in January instead of at home watching the playoffs on television we're making progress.

In due time, under the direction from our new general manager Tony Telford and this extremely talented coaching staff, I am confident that we will once again return to the Super Bowl. Not only that, we will win one. That will most certainly find itself on my Christmas list in the near future...

But for now, Santa, a victory against the Denver Broncos will do just fine.

                              Sealed With A Miss
Denver might have kissed their playoff chances goodbye with failed comeback

Joe Nedney misses a field goal wide right with 8 seconds left to end the Denver comeback attempt.

BUFFALO, NY -- When Denver kicker Joe Nedney's field goal missed wide right on Sunday, every Buffalo Bills fan across America let out a collective exhale. Not only had the Bills secured a victory in the game, but they clinched their first playoff birth since 1999. Now, with one game remaining against the lowly Miami Dolphins, the Bills have a chance to clinch the division, a first round bye, and in the event of a loss by the Indianapolis Colts, home field advantage.

Knowshown Moreno scores on a 76 yard run

Sunday's game was a back and forth brawl, wrought with fumbles, big plays, and exciting comeback drives. The action started early when on the first drive, Matt Leinart connected with Khamari Dansby on a screen pass that he broke up field for a 54 yard touchdown to give the Bills an early lead. After trading field goals, the Broncos finally reached the end zone on the heels of a Knowshown Moreno 76 yard scamper. The game had all the makings of a defensive battle, as the score was knotted at 10 at the end of the second quarter after Mason Crosby missed a 43-yard field goal 10 seconds before halftime.

The offensive ineptitude would continue into the third quarter as neither team was able to put any points on the board. The third quarter saw several possession changes in the way of punts as well as fumbles. On one occasion, Buffalo's Jairus Byrd would force a Moreno fumble that was recovered by Dwan Edwards at the Denver 26. On the first play of the Buffalo drive, Ryan McBean was able to sack Leinart, forcing a fumble in which Elvis Dumervil was able to recover.

Marcus Stroud gets the sack and forces a Kyle Orton fumble, although the Broncos would recover
Finally to start the fourth, Fred Jackson ended the silence by running through a gaping hole up the middle, left after an all-out blitz by Denver. His 26-yard run put the Bills up 17-10. The Broncos quickly answered back as Moreno fought for a 15 yard touchdown run of his own. After a Crosby 40-yard field goal gave the Bills a 20-17 lead with just over 6 minutes left to play, Kyle Orton and the Broncos set their sights on a touchdown drive to take the lead.

Denver's march down the field had many defining moments. On a 4th and 2, the Buffalo defense played it safe defending a pass, but Moreno got the hand-off and gained 3 yards to convert. Then, Demaryius Thomas and Orton connected for what would have been a touchdown if it weren't for there being a flag on the play. Clipping: Victor Cruz. Denver was able to rebound as Orton found Andre Brown on the sidelines for a pass that was initially ruled incomplete, but Josh McDaniels challenged the play and it was overturned. The drive was punctuated, as Cruz made up for his costly penalty from just a few plays earlier by making a diving play in the end zone to give the Broncos the lead with 1:40 left on the clock.

The lead wouldn't last long, as it took Leinart and the Bills just over a minute until he found rookie Jordunn Williams left wide open for a 36 yard go-ahead touchdown, giving them a 27-24 lead with 27 seconds remaining. After starting the drive at their own 26, the Broncos made some quick plays thanks to Buffalo calling a questionable prevent defense and found themselves at the Buffalo 30 yard line with 8 seconds left. All Joe Nedney had to do was make the 47-yard field goal to send the game into overtime. Unfortunately for Denver, the game would come to an abrupt, disappointing end as his kick sailed wide right.

                              Telford's Take:
Wasn't the prettiest win, but boy does it feel great to be in the playoffs. We're going to have to step our level of play up if we're going to get out of the first round, but I'm confident in our chances. We've got a talented squad with a lot of heart.
