Michigan State collapses at Camp Randall Stadium, 3 unbeatens left

#1 Michigan State had one obstacle left between them and facing Illinois in the Big 10 title game. #10 Wisconsin was that only obstacle, but it turned from an obstacle into an immovable object as the Badgers whooped the Spartans 49-7.

#2 Oregon defeated Washington State 50-14

unranked BYU defeated #15 TCU 55-22 and moved to #17 on the BCS polls, trying to climb into the top 12 for a guaranteed spot to the BCS bowls. They are the highest ranked non-AQ.

      Game Notes
Up until last week this game was eagerly anticipated by Tiger fans. Now they are unsure as James Franklin is out, and that Kansas offense needs to be kept off the field and kept up with.
The Jayhawks have the most polarizing passing attack out there besides the Idaho Vandals, but lets be honest the Jayhawks have a decent conference schedule and are #1 in the nation with points per game.

The Tigers defense will be tested and should hold up, but can their offense come through?

2013 Border War an instant classic

The 2013 Border War ended with one team a single victory away from the BCS National Championship, and the other team sent home heartbroken by their bitter rivals.

#3 Kansas and #2 Missouri went to war in Lawrence Kansas, and it was an amazing battle that joins the ranks of the 2007 36-28 battle and 2011's 72-69 OT game.

The game started off calmly enough with David Steele getting the Tigers on the board first with a short four yard rush. KU responded with a short seven yard pass from Webb to C. Omigie to tie the game at 7-7 after one quarter.

The second quarter was quiet and totally defensive until J. Webb connected with T. Smith on a 37 yard bomb. Unfortunately Kansas was nailed for holding on the play and had to redo. The penalty seemed odd, but Missouri was grateful for it regardless.

        T. Smith's great catch didn't count

Webb pitched it to the endzone again a few plays later, and this time Missouri took matters into their own hands and intercepted the pass thanks to T. Bolden. Unfortunately Bolden exited the endzone and was tackled backwards, and since he broke the plane it was considered a safety, giving KU a precious 2 points and a 9-7 lead.

Bolden's int that gave KU 2 points

KU took the free punt and had Webb hit Omigie with a 56 yard deep pass to put them within scoring range shortly before the half, and they gained the touchdown with a 5 yard pass to E. McGriff from J. Webb with 19 seconds left in the half to take a 16-7 lead.

Omigie takes a pass and creates some yardage, it was a 56 yard play

Missouri tried to make it happen offensively but faltered twice, and then KU scored again with a 28 pass from Webb to Matthews and then KU gambled and went for two, and barely got it upon a review to take a 24-7 lead

        C. Browning and the rest of the Tigers defense was restless. They were holding the Jayhawks to a season low in points so far, but were losing because the offense could not score without Franklin. Browning stepped up and made a great play, intercepting Webb and returning it 21 yards for a pick 6, to make it 24-14 KU.

        C Browning intercepts J. Webb

KU took the kickoff and Webb immediately targeted Browning again, attempting to right the wrong from the previous play. Instead Browning again got the ball and returned it 33 yards this time to make it 24-21 with 2:07 left in the third quarter.

Browning's second interception for a pick 6 in less than 50 seconds

Despite Browning's amazing attempt, the MU offense could not get anything going and the Jayhawks took a 31-21 lead when Webb connected with C. Omigie for a 39 yard hookup for a touchdown with 26 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Jayhawks drove the ball deep into Tiger territory, and then J. Vincent stepped up big time and intercepted Webb and returned the ball 59 yards to put the Tigers in great field position. E. Torries capitalized with a 27 yard pass to D. Steele, and the Tigers pulled within 3, 31-28 with 2:16 left.

The Jayhawks ran the clock out unfortunately, as the Tigers had no timeouts remaining and the Jayhawks kept their dream season alive with the 31-28 heart breaking victory.

After the game Turner Gill told the media: "It was a fantastic game. In 2007 it was heartbreaking to lose the undefeated season to them I heard, and it was amazing to get some payback for that 72-69 overtime loss from two years ago, and them taking the BCS bid and Big XII title from us last year. They played hard, but honestly we were soo much better. They got lucky with the two pick 6's. We dominated statistically and on the field."

Kansas POTG: 34 of 49 passing for 547 yards, 4 TD, 4 INT, sacked 2 times
        C. Omigie caught 7 passes for 218 yards and 2 TD.

Missouri POTG: C Browning 6 tackles, 5 of them solo, 1 TFL, 2 int, 2 defensive TD
        T. Bolden 8 tackles, 2 solo, 3 TFL, 1 sack

Jayhawks leap to 2nd in BCS, Tigers fall to 6th

Due to no major upsets, the top 10 in the BCS is still relatively unchanged.
Missouri only fell to #6, which shocked and annoyed fans of Michigan State which only lost to Wisconsin who is #5 in the current standings. Unfortunately the Spartans lost convincingly 49-7 which Missouri lost a more one sided than it looks 31-28 contest to the current #2 who has no losses while Wisconsin has two losses.

Missouri Tigers should get BCS bid

The BCS Bowl bids are always hard to get into, but this year especially so.
WIth the SEC champion likely to be ranked below #16, that opens the door for an non-AQ to get an auto-bid. Which reduces the number of at larges to 2. Wisconsin is #5 and has no games left, and Missouri is #6.
Due to Texas Tech bringing down Missouri's SOS, it is conceivable that even if they go 11-1 they could miss a BCS Bowl.

              Game Notes
The #6 Missouri Tigers just lost the Big XII title, most likely their BCS dreams are over if they beat TTech due to the weakness the Red Raiders are in the computer rankings, and the best spot they can land after a 10-1 regular season appears to be the Cotton Bowl.

Texas Tech has a horrible offense and defense, their offense is #35 in the nation in passing but 120th in rushing and their defense is 119th in the nation.

Missouri will be more focused on the scoreboard and thinking about next weekend's conference championships to see if they they can somehow procure one of the two at large spots that will be available.

I know. It was one of the most painful games to watch as a defensive coordinator, because this entire dynasty I have struggled against passing attacks and Webb didn't just get lucky, he dominated my defense.

Watching the offense get pounded over and over again and having to score 1/2 of the points just to keep it close, ugh. I have never been that dominated when I had a top 15 team before, ever. Make no doubt Missouri should have lost about 52-7.

Author note: I used the wrong T. Smith photo, that was from another dynasty I played, and another game. (I was SMU, but I always play the Border War).
I cannot find the correct picture, that's why the uniforms do not match. I noticed it as I reread it today.

                            Conference championship week

It's that time of year. Conference championship week. The last week any upsets that can change the balance of the national championship, the last time a team has a chance to prove themselves before bowl season.

                            ACC: #4 Virginia Tech (11-1) at #7 Maryland (11-1)
                            Big 10: #9 Michigan State (11-1) at #3 Illinois (11-1)
MAC: Toledo (9-3) at Ohio (10-2)
                            MWC: #21 Fresno State (10-2) at #13 Houston (11-1)
                            Pac 12: Colorado (6-6) at #1 Oregon (12-0)
                            SEC: Georgia (6-6) at #19 Alabama (9-3)

                            Title game rundowns
ACC: Virginia Tech lost the first matchup at home against Maryland and doesn't look to have fixed the holes in their defense. Look for Maryland to gain a similar result and take the Orange bowl bid.

Big East: #11 USF (11-1) is the Big East Champion for 2013
Big XII: #2 Kansas (12-0) is the Big XII Champion for 2013

                            Big 10: #9 Michigan State (11-1) at #3 Illinois (11-1)
Both teams were embarassed by a top 10 Big 10 team that finished with 2 losses. Illinois seems to have the advantage, and it shouldn't even be close, in the 50-20 range is what early lines seem to believe.

                            C-USA: Rice (7-5) wins the 2013 C-USA title

MAC Toledo (9-3) at Ohio (10-2)
Ohio and Toledo had comparable results in the year, and it seems to be a tossup for who wins. Toledo is the favorite, so look for Ohio to pull the upset.

                            MWC
Fresno only lost to Hawaii and Boise State, two prolific passing attempts. Unfortunately Houston has an amazing passing attack, so it should be a long night for the Bulldogs. Look for the Cougars to cinch their first BCS Berth.

                            Pac-12: Colorado (6-6) at #1 Oregon (12-0)
Earlier this year the Ducks blew out the Buffaloes 41-10 in Boulder. Look for more of the same. However, the Buffaloes did manage to win the Pac-12 South, so they might be able to pull the upset. However early lines are the Ducks being 29 points favorites.

                            SEC: Georgia (6-6) at #19 Alabama (9-3)
How the mighty have fallen. Georgia started the season as #5, but had a rough road and is now just trying to pull their season back together. If they defeat Alabama they will travel to the Sugar Bowl. Alabama killed Georgia 38-17 early this year in Tuscaloosa, look for more of the same.

Sun Belt: #25 Mid Tenn State (10-2) wins the 2013 Sun Belt title
