        Matchup Preview *|* January 1, 2014
        @
        #5 Missouri Tigers
        (11-1, Away)
        #4 Michigan State Spartans
        (12-1, Home)
        Game Notes
The Missouri Tigers (11-1, #5 BCS, #5 Harris, #5 Coaches) take on #4 Michigan State (12-1, #4 BCS, #4 Harris, #4 Coaches) in the 2014 Rose Bowl.

Missouri has a 3-5 overall record against Michigan State and they have lost the last three matchups which date back to 1945. Their last victory was a 13-7 win over the Spartans in 1944, the Spartans went 6-1 that year.

James Franklin will be unavailable for the game, the with Michigan State having the #14 pass defense it is hard to believe the Tigers will be able to manage a very effective offensive attack.

Michigan State has the #4 rushing offense, and the #39 pass offense. Missouri should shut down the run, but the pass will once again plague Missouri. If the Tigers wish to salvage the season with a Rose Bowl Victory they must shut down the Spartan passing attack.

Michigan State has not played in the Rose Bowl since 1988, they cannot wait to for it.

Re: When the Defense Roars: Missouri Tigers Dynasty

Missouri Tigers and Michigan State Spartans play a classic in the 2014 Rose Bowl
The Michigan State Spartans last played the Missouri Tigers in 2001, and they spanked them 55-7 in East Lansing.

This time both teams were one game away from the national championship, as the Spartans lost to Wisconsin 49-7 and Missouri lost to Kansas 31-28.

The game started hot for the Tigers, they received the opening kickoff and marched right down the field. Evan Torres for the Tigers was running an option when he decided to pitch it to David Steele. Unfortunately J. Jones for the Spartans stepped in the way, grabbed the pitch, and returned in 80 yards for a defensive TD and a 7-0 lead.

          J. Jones and the MSU defense struck first in the 2014 Rose Bowl

On the kickoff the return was fumbled, but D. Washington scooped it up and rumbled 69 yards for a touchdown and to tie the game 7-7.

          D. Washington picks up a potentially dangerous fumble by MU and turns it into points with a 69 yard fumble recovery run to make it 7-7

Michigan State responded with a methodical drive down the field and a 30 yard field goal, making it 10-7 Spartans.

Missouri responded with a surgical drive, no huddling their way down the field with lots of 1-2 plays per 1st down, until the Spartans held them to a fourth down, so C O'Connor booted a 39 yard field goal to tie the game 10-10 where it would remain for the rest of the 1st quarter.

Michigan State went three and out, and Missouri started driving. Torres threw a deep pass that bounced off a defender and was scooped up by a trailing defender before it hit the ground, giving MSU possession of the ball at the Missouri 5 yard line.

A game of field position started in the second quarter, as Missouri and Michigan State both had 2 three-and-outs apiece to end the first quarter and begin the second quarter. Unfortunately for Michigan State they were pinned down at the 3 yard line, as the earlier MSU interception at the 5 yard line had left them in bad field position for a field position battle.

Missouri broke their streak as Torres drove them down the field to the 18 yard line where C' O'Connor drilled a 35 yard FG to give the Tigers their first lead in the game 13-10.

Missouri forced another 3-and-out, and started marching down the field to try and increase their lead before halftime. E. Torres nailed J. Thomas perfectly in the numbers for a 44 yard touchdown with 9 seconds left in the half for a 20-10 lead.

Missouri kicked off to start the second half, and Michigan State drove down to the 22 yard line but missed the 39 yard field goal. Missouri took over again still ahead 20-10.

A few drives later, with the score still 20-10, Michigan State finally found momentum when L. Bell broke a pair of tackles and rushed 59 yards for a touchdown to make it 20-17 with the Tigers still leading with 2:09 left in the third quarter.

With 5:17 left in the fourth quarter A. Maxwell had marched MSU down to the Tigers 16 yard line on a 61 yard 14 play drive. Maxwell launched a ball towards the endzone, but D. Washington came with a crucial interception, giving the Tigers the ball on Michigan State's 11 yard line with 5:17 left and a 20-17 lead.

          D. Washington saves the day with an interception to end MSU's promising drive

The Tigers went 3 and out, and MSU got the ball back and started driving down the field on L. Bell's legs. With 3:24 left in the game MSU's K. Muma nailed an off the bar 56 yard field goal that got a lucky bounce, tying the game at 20 apiece and MSU having the clear advantage as far as offensive production in the second half.

          E. Torres marched the Tigers down the field quickly, sealing the drive with a 48 yard pass to D. Steele who wrestled his way into the endzone for a 27-20 lead with 2:31 left in the game.

Maxwell tried to play hero for MSU, but he miscalculated a deep pass to Sonnattg and was picked off by C. Browning for MU, who returned in 45 yards to the MU 20 with 1:21 left in the game.

MSU forced the 3-and-out, but a 28 yard field goal by C O'Connor gave MU a 30-20 lead, meaning MSU needed to score twice to win the game. They were unable to gain a first down, and lost the game 30-20 after A. Maxwell was sacked twice and his 4th and 26 pass was caught by K. Mumphery for 23 yards but he ran out of bounds to give MU the ball back with 31 seconds left and MSU having no timeouts.

Missouri POTG: E. Torres 17/29 passing for 234 yards, 2 TD, 1 Int, sacked 2x, 18 carries for 73 yards.
          C. Browning with 6 tackles, and 2 INT.

          Michigan State POTG
Leveon Bell with 15 carries for 149 yards and 1 TD.

Well the season is over, and with only one undefeated team the Kansas Jayhawks are the unanimous #1 team in the nation after beating Oregon 49-31 in a shootout.
Missouri leaped to #2 in the nation, in part thanks to only losing to Kansas this year in a very close game.

Big East's numbers barely enough, keep AQ Status

The Big East's numbers, thanks to USF and TCU's good seasons, managed to keep them with AQ Status until 2015. The bad news is it is a temporary deal, and with TCU leaving for the Pac-12 the Big East might lose their AQ Status in 2015/2016.

Johnny Rock heads to Ohio State

3 years ago Johnny Rock was a high school football coach, and now he is a legendary figure. In 3 years he helped lead Missouri to a 37-2 record, with 2 Fiesta Bowl victories, a Rose Bowl victory, and 2 Big XII championships.

He will now take over as head coach of Ohio State, who went 7-6 last season.

He will be replaced by Joey Davis, his former defensive coordinator at Class 2 Hamilton High School. Davis took over as the head coach when Rock left to be DC at Missouri and had a combined 44-1 record his three years as head coach, the 1 loss being to eventual Class 4 state runner-up Kearney in a pre-season game last year enroute to winning another state championship.

Author Note: I will still be playing as MU all the time and continuing this dynasty. tOSU will be my secondary team, with my goal to get Rock back to MU as head coach

                          Missouri Tigers 2014 football schedule

The Missouri Tigers only scheduled 11 opponents for the 2014 season, which is curious. However, who can argue with the success they have had the last 7 years.

                          2014 Schedule analysis

Toughest game: At #4 Kansas (11/29). After last years heart breaking loss, this game is definitely circled on every Tigers calendar. KU lost Webb, so their offense won't exactly be the same, but these Jayhawks are for real.

Toughest stretch: Arkansas, at Texas, Oklahoma. Even though they are unranked this year Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma are always challenges. Missouri will need to be on top of their game to win these three.

Cakewalk: Army (11/08). Army is a historic program but they are not even a threat to Missouri's third string. If Missouri loses this game then they do not even deserve to be mentioned as a possible BCS Bowl candidate let alone National Championship contender.

Upset Alert: at Texas Tech (11/15). The Red Raiders may have went 0-12 last year, but their offense looks killer. If Missouri has defensive issues against the pass like the last few years they will be ripe for the picking by the Red Raiders.

Getting to know the 2014 Missouri Tigers

The Tigers underwent some changes for 2014. Arriving defensive coach Joey Davis has switched defenses to the 4-2-5 scheme instead of the 3-3-5 used the last two years by forcing DC Johnny Rock. This scheme fits well considering the Tigers recruit speed and intelligent players, and given the spread offenses Missouri faces in the Big XII makes sense.

Offense: The offense will be led by sophomore quarterback Eddie Torres. Torres is a scrambler, having ran a 4.40 40-yard dash he is a threat on the ground. He spent most spring practicing his accuracy, if he can get it down just a little bit better he will be scarier to offenses than James Franklin was, which is a huge compliment. Torres has several excellent receivers to toss to, Jimmy Thomas and Matthew Smith are the biggest weapons in the air for the Tigers. Both are balanced wide receivers, they won't outrun out by are very smart and very strong.

Sophomore David Steele is the running threat for the Tigers and he is a beast. He only runs a 4.50 40-yard dash but he will run you over and keep moving. He is very strong and very stout at 6'0 238lbs.

The Tigers have a pair of young 6'7 Tight Ends, freshman Jack Ross and Mike Ball that hope to contribute to the passing attack and will provide nice blocking for the running game also.

Defense: The Tigers lost C. Browning who went as 2nd round pick in the NFL draft and a few other key defensive players. The 4-2-5 switch will be a breeze for the Tigers, they did a bit of 4-2-5 almost every game last year along with their primary 3-3-5.

With Larry Harris, Marques Smith, Mike Lawrence, and Shane Ray being the primary front four look for constant pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Missouri's CBs are weak this year, going only two deep before you see issues with awareness and tackling. D.J. Washington and Carl Jones are the primary CB threats, although Andy Roach is definitely learning quickly.

Matt Wilson and Ben Moore look to keep everything else in check. Passing yards will be a weakness as they have been for years, but with the offense the Tigers have they should be able to win every game as the Tiger D shouldn't give up more than 20-25 points a game.

                                Game Notes
Missouri holds a 2-1 overall record against Alabama. Unfortunately the two teams haven't play since 1978, when then #1 Alabama thumped #11 Missouri 38-20. In 1975 the Missouri Tigers defeated then #2 Alabama 20-7.

Since this game hasn't been played in 36 years it's two entirely different programs. Since then Missouri has won 2 conference championships and only been ranked #1 in two years (2007 and 2011). Alabama on the other hand has won 6 conference championships, 3 national championships, and been ranked #1 more than a handful of times.

Missouri's spread offense should challenge Alabama's defensive, as Missouri has a very balanced and deadly rushing and passing attack. Combined with Missouri's speed heavy defense this could be a blowout victory for the Tigers.
