Week 9
#18vs
The One that Got Away
Wake Forest started strong on the road and entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 20 point lead. But much like last year's game at Clemson Memorial Stadium, there's no putting away the Tigers. Although it took three quarters, James Walker finally came alive to lead Clemson's charge back into the game. And was it a ruthless charge that was aided by the Tiger's revitalized defense.
Guard Chris Marks can only watch after Clemson's Doug Harrison sacks the quarterback again.
In fact, despite the final score this was a game that was dominated by defense. Clemson had no problem getting to the quarterback the entire game -- the line protecting Jenkins might as well had been Swiss cheese. On the other hand, Clemson's spread option was malfunctioning during the entire game. Although both QB Walker and RB Peterson were able to find ample running lanes through the Deacon defense, both also lost the ball on errant pitch outs and failures to hold onto the ball once they found space. James Cross was once again the stand out of the defense by both forcing two fumbles and grabbing two fumble recoveries.
Walker attempts to make an option pitch through two wake defenders.
The result was that Wake Forest was able to build a strong lead by constantly taking advantage of good field position. Clemson was content to stop the "big play," but when Wake had only 20-40 yards to drive to a score there was not much the defense could do. Oftentimes Jenkins was able to work the underneath routes for gains, although Clemson's team speed prevented the wideouts or Jenkins, while scrambling, to make significant gains in the open field.
Meanwhile, Wake Forest showed some new looks that seemed to take the Tigers by surprise. "You can't just do the same thing game in and game out," said Shapiro after the game, "even just new looks is enough to get the defense out of rhythm or rattled." Wake had some success running a few plays out of the Shotgun Pistol, while Patrick Mitchell even made a nice 12 yard run out of the Wildcat. But even with these new looks, the Tigers were generally able to contain the Demon Deacons. If not for their hard work, the game would have been far more lopsided by the time the 4th quarter started.
HB Patrick Mitchell runs a play out of the Wildcat.
Jenkins and Peters give the Deacons a 20 point lead on a well executed goal line play.
But after the last touchdown to Peters the game changed course entirely. Clemson abandoned the run, and had near instant positive results. Wake Forest had struggled to defend the pass almost all game, and created little pressure on Walker. The result was that Walker had the time necessary to let his receivers find open spaces or get separation from defenders.
James Walker places the ball in front of the receiver perfectly.
Meanwhile, the Deacon offense could not manage to kill the clock. There were no running lanes for Mitchell to make it through. Clemson was not worn down on defense at all, but instead was more reared to fight. Two Wake drives were thwarted on third and long by timely sacks of Jenkins. In just a few possessions, Clemson was able to score 14 points and get the ball with great field position, two time outs, and less than two minutes to go.
The final drive was methodical. Wake Forest twice forced third and long, and each time Walker would find a way to convert. One by his arm and one with his feet. Whenever Clemson needed a play, Walker was there to make it. After burning both time outs and working the side line, Clemson had first down at the Wake Forest 9. The first pass was an attempted screen to Nick Patterson that was immediately sniffed out and snuffed by the Wake defense. Hurrying to the line, Clemson was unable to get anything going on the second pass attempt, and the 3rd was well covered -- forcing Walker to throw the ball away before the defensive line got to him.
That left only fourth down with 20 seconds to play. Wake Forest came out in a dime package and dropped everyone back into coverage. Once again, Walker had all the time in the world to make a throw. The Deacons were in Cover 3, and it was only a matter of time before someone would find a hole in the zone. With Wake's four man rush stymied, Walker opted to look for the open man instead of risking a run attempt from 13 yards out.
And after what seemed like an eternity for the fans in Death Valley, Walker threw the perfect pass to complete Clemson's 21 unanswered points and to seal an amazing come back victory...
Clemson's last shot at winning the game.
...except that Curtis Young, the Clemson receiver, lost sight of where he was running his route and caught the ball just out of bounds.
Unfortunately, a wide open Curtis Young caught the ball out of bounds.
After the heartbreaking miscue, all Wake had to do was take a knee to preserve it's 27-21 victory. The 80,000 strong crowd filed out of the stadium silently.

Coach's Take: We should be 7-1 today. There is no excuse for such a drastic defensive break down at crunch time in the game. We did everything we needed to do to win for three quarters, then spent the final quarter gift wrapping the game for the Tigers. We've got to do better, and we've got to eliminate these late game break downs.
What's Next: Both Clemson (4-4) and Wake Forest (8-0) have a bye next week.

Re: Wake Forest NCAA 12 Dynasty: Competitive Football Would be Nice!
Week 10
Bye Week Recruiting Update
With Wake Forest climbing up the rankings throughout their undefeated season, a lot of work has also been going on the recruiting trail. Although Coach Shapiro pulled in a fairly large class last year, there are a lot of players graduating this year. Key positions include linebacker, kicker, and both lines. Thus far Coach Shaprio has done well on the trail again, although it does not appear he has hit a home run with anyone line Jenkins.
Wake Forest Mid-Season Recruitment Commitments - 2012 NAME POS CLASS HOMETOWN HT WT CALIBER Mike Corbett WR HS Ahoskie, NC 6'1" 171 Tommy Scales DT HS North Decatur, GA 6'2" 280 Eric Stone HB HS Kannapolis, NC 5'10" 160 Orlando Snyder FB HS Alpharetta, GA 6'0" 216 Clayton Carter DT HS Levelland, TX 6'3" 298 Adam Estes T HS Perry, GA 6'8" 278 Kevin Williams WR HS Winter Haven, FL 6'1" 177 Charlie Miller K HS Lafayette, CO 5'11" 180 Needs Remaining: 2 OLB, 1 C
Toughest Recruiting Battle: Eric Stone
The star running back from A. L. Brown was one of the top RB prospects out of North Carolina. Although he might not possess blazing speed, he is a shifty mover who can find space between the tackles and also catch passes from out of the back field. He was coveted by UNC from the start, and for a long time Stone looked destined to be a Tar Heel. But after seeing how Shapiro uses running backs out of the spread, Stone saw that his best opportunity for success might be from Wake Forest. He wanted to make a decision early, and he signed with the Deacons a week after vising the San Jose State game.
Happy Feet: Charlie Miller
After the kicking woes suffered by Wake Forest the past few seasons, Coach Shaprio will probably be happy to have one of his "own guys" on the field. Jim Grobe, the prior Wake Forest coach, always seemed to prioritize accuracy over kicking power. Shapiro is the opposite, as he apparently only recruited kickers who were known for their power. Miller has a High School career long of 52 yards -- far longer than any field goal the current WFU kicker has hit.
Target Practice: Kevin Williams and Mike Corbett
Last year Wake Forest added quarterback Curtis Jenkins, and the returns have been outstanding. It is no surprise that a a number of receivers have shown interest in joining the Deacons. Corbett signed on with Wake early in September, which is little surprise considering he had already also earned an academic scholarship based on his SAT score. Kevin Williams took a little longer, but shows a bit more promise by running a very fast 40 and showing a knack for catching the long ball. Both could have a shot to contribute immediately in 4 or 5 receiver packages.
Strengthening the Middle: Clayton Carter and Tommy Scales
Both Porter and Benjamin are fantastic defensive tackles, but they are both primarily pass rushers and well on their way out the door. For the 2nd year in a row, Shapiro has managed to add some more big bodies to defend the interior. Scales is a pass rusher in the mold of All-American Benjamin, although he is about 30 pounds heavier. Carter is the kind of big bodied run stopper that Wake Forest does not currently have on its roster. Look for Carter to possibly start as a freshman. Despite the Levelland Lobos having another horrible year on the field, Carter has shown that he will be a high quality player at the next level.
What's to Come: According to Coach Shapiro, there are a few prospects who have visited recently that are very close to signing. Furthermore, Shaprio is largely looking to build depth across both lines -- especially with a number of key contributors graduating within the next few seasons. There could be a glut of players at WR and RB, so there could be some cuts on the horizon. But even with the quality signings Wake Forest has made so far, it will be an empty recruiting season if Shapiro and Co. cannot land any linebackers.Comment

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons can celebrate a dramatic climb up the top 25 rankings during thier bye week, as the team is at an all time high position of #6 in the country. Meanwhile, the Virginia Cavaliers look to turn things around after dropping their third straight conference game last week at Miami.
And to make matters worse for the Cavaliers, they will be without their team leader and most reliable offensive weapon. Initial optimism turned to dread when team doctors learned there was a crack in HB James Abrams' tibia, meaning that he will be out for 9 weeks -- which in Virginia's case is the rest of the season.
Wake Forest should be able to take care of business and kick Virginia while they are down. After having a bye to contemplate their nearly blown victory, the Deacs will come out ready and focused. Expect a blow out win, 45-7.Comment

Update from Around the Nation
As October rolls into November the national picture begins to take shape and the intrigue truly begins. And what better way to start this week's look than with the latest BCS poll. As the leaves begin to leave trees across the nation, so too does the National Title hopes of teams week by week. There are still a lot of undefeated teams this deep into the season, but a lot can change in the final month of the season.
NCAA Football Rankings - BCS Rankings - Updated: Nov 3, 2012 RK LW TEAM (VOTES) W L POINTS 1 3 Auburn 8 0 .997 2 1 Penn State 8 0 .994 3 2 Alabama 8 0 .992 4 4 Iowa 9 0 .983 5 7 Wisconsin 7 1 .978 6 6 South Carolina 7 1 .969 7 14 Wake Forest 8 0 .965 8 9 Oregon 7 1 .955 9 10 Pittsburgh 7 1 .947 10 12 Oklahoma 7 1 .942 11 5 Ohio State 6 2 .941 12 19 North Carolina 8 0 .920 13 15 Arkansas 6 2 .915 14 16 TCU 6 2 .906 15 17 Nevada 8 0 .901 16 11 LSU 6 2 .892 17 18 USF 7 1 .881 18 8 Oklahoma State 5 2 .871 19 22 Oregon State 7 1 .869 20 21 Baylor 6 1 .869 21 23 Utah 6 2 .850 22 24 Michigan 7 1 .831 23 NR USC 7 2 .829 24 13 Boise State 6 2 .827 25 NR Texas 6 2 .820
Dropped Out of Top 25 Coach's this Week: Duke #20 after losing to VT
There have been some significant shake ups this week, but we lead off with a head-scratcher. Sure, a lot of people criticize the BCS as being formulaic. But even with moving away from the 6 computer ranking scheme it used in years past, a team like Wake Forest launches into the top 10 during its bye week while being under ranked in weeks past. But don't blame the computers entirely, Wake Forest also shot up in the Coach's (#6) and AP (#11) polls respectively. Whatever the cause, the Deacons will take it. Nevada and North Carolina also continue to make their undefeated pushes into the upper echelon of college football.
Meanwhile, the mighty continue to fall. By far the biggest upset of the week was Boise State losing in two overtimes to Wyoming -- a landmark 41-35 victory for the Cowboys for sure, but also probably the end of the Broncos BCS hopes this season (they also lost to Air Force for the second year in a row). Ohio State also falls after getting run out of Lincoln by the Cornhuskers 37-10. Add Oklahoma State's lopsided 54-20 loss to Baylor and it is clear that the field is really beginning to separate itself.
As for the Iowa Hawkeyes, some might call them the quietest 9-0 team in the nation. Maybe that is because everyone is waiting for them to slip and fall as traditional Big 10 powers rise up. But that might not happen, because even as others are stealing the headlines from that team in Iowa City, everyone is talking about their Quarterback.

The Heisman field looks to be settling down as we break into the strech of the season. However TCU QB Casey Pachall appears in the top 5 for the first time this year after guiding the Horned Frogs to a very impressive road win against Notre Dame. Meanwhile, Kenjon Barner had a lackluster game on the stat sheet last week, but he returned from injury late in the game to help lift Oregon over Stanford.
In just a few magical weeks, the ACC has turned into a two horse race with a supporting cast of a bunch of also-rans. Will someone step up to put some drama in the division races, or will Wake Forest and North Carolina coast their way to Charlotte, NC?

Florida State gets a "Get Well" card from Boston College to move out of the Atlantic basement. Well, someone had to, right? Meanwhile, Wake Forest is in control of the division and has the advantage of an extra conference game due to a scheduling error. However, some scenarios could still allow NC State to win the Atlantic for the second year in a row -- but the Wolfpack will need to win out. Just like last year.

It's a game of North Carolina versus everyone else, but Virginia Tech has a number of conference games left and Miami has been playing much better football the past month. Either team could push the Tar Heels if they falters -- especially because both teams are coming up on Carolina's schedule this month. Meanwhile, Duke's recent woes have removed the national spotlight from the team. But maybe that's for the best, as the Blue Devils were on a 4 game road winning streak snapped in Blacksburg, VA last week. But while there are 3 teams lurking in the distance, the Coastal division is still North Carolina's to lose.

Week 11
#6vs
Taking the Next Step
In the conference game that was not supposed to be, Virginia looked strong and ready to spring the upset in front of the home crowd. But between one blown replay and one outstanding performance by Freshman QB Curtis Jenkins, the Deacons took control in the second half on the way to a blowout 41-14 victory.
Jenkins' 4 touchdown passes led the Deacons charge
From the outset, it was clear that the Deacons had developed some rust during their week off. Either that or they were feeling the pressure after climbing up the rankings so quickly. But it was Virginia that was the more physical team. Their leading rusher out for the season? Who cares, Derrick Lindsay and the Cavalier offensive line pushed around Wake's defense throughout the first half.
Backup HB Derrick Lindsay Bullies the Wake Defense
Unlike other road games this season, Wake had not taken the home crowd out of the game early. But now it was Virginia with the momentum and anything looked possible with an early 7-3 lead. And then stepped in Senior WR Tom Huggins to put the team on his shoulders.
Huggins strikes back to score a kickoff return TD.
Huggins would end up having a career day, including a kickoff return for a touchdown and two long receiving touchdowns. But it would be awhile before the Wake offense would get on track. Instead, it was Virginia making big plays to drive down the field. But they would threaten, and threaten, but punt until James Payne hit Aaron Stewart on a long post route with less than two minutes left in the first half..
But fortunately Wake's opportunistic defense stepped up again to force a fumble, or did it?
The booth erroneously upheld a fumble call on the field despite Aaron Stewart's knee clearly being down.
Replays clearly showed that the fumble call was incorrect, and the UVA crowd was livid when the review booth upheld the fumble call on the field. Instead, it would be Wake Forest who would drive back down the field to cap off the half with a field goal.
And from the second half on, it was all Curtis Jenkins and Wake Forest. Jenkins looked like he took a huge step forward in the second half of tonight's game, finding receivers deep, close, and in between zones. He turned the Cavalier defense into mush and had by far his biggest passing outing of his career. And as an added bonus? He went the whole game without throwing an interception.
Jenkins shows him arm strength by passing the ball from the WFU 13 to the UVA 24.
Although Virginia was able to rush for over 100 yards in the first half, their offense could do no right in the 2nd half. And once they went into come-from-behind territory, they were finished. Curtis Jenkins' four touchdowns through the air was enough to dispatch the Cavaliers and continue Wake Forests' unbeaten run through the 2012 season.
Huggins drags two Cavalier defenders into the end zone.

Coach's Take: This is the kind of win we should be getting, and we grabbed it. It's good that we had to slug it out with the Cavs. The home crowd got behind them and that's what happens. We made the adjustments we needed to make to stop their rushing attack, and our seniors on offense and defense helped carry the day. Hopefully we can keep this going next week.
What's Next: Wake Forest (9-0) travels to Durham to take on the Blue Devils. Virginia (2-7) travels to Chestnut Hill to take on the Boston College Eagles.Comment

SeasonGame Notes If they had played a few weeks ago this game would have garnered national headlines. But after dropping 3 of their past four, Duke now sits unranked looking up the mountain at Wake Forest. Today's game is still scheduled for national TV coverage despite Duke's slide, but a freak November snow storm that should hit the Triangle a little before game time could change the dynamic of the game. Although Duke can put up the fireworks and score on anybody in the nation, the blizzard could make this a very defensive game. Duke's suspect defense has been their undoing against Miami, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech.
Still, do not forget last season's game, where QB Edward Suggs destroyed the Wake Forest defense with a no huddle passing attack. Suggs has been having an All-American caliber year and is getting a lot of attention from NFL scouts. He has the arm to make plays through any kind of nasty weather. The Wake defense is going to need to be far more opportunistic and force Suggs to make mistakes.
It will come down to who can take care of the ball better, and with Wake's ball hawking defense the edge has to go to the Deacons. Expect this one to go the distance despite Duke's recent slide, but Wake will come out on top 38-27.Comment

Re: Wake Forest NCAA 12 Dynasty: Competitive Football Would be Nice!
Remember remember the 10th of November? No, that can't be right. This week's BCS rankings bring some new faces and see some old ones drop down. Meanwhile, the scrum up at the top probably won't be resolved until as deep as championship weekend. Could we get Alabama and Auburn clashing for the SEC Title as undefeated? There's rivalry week, but close enough. Penn State and Iowa for the Big 10? Absolutely. What about undefeated Wake Forest and UNC fighting it out for the ACC crown? Well, not anymore.

The biggest headline of the week is North Carolina losing a close one on the road to the NC State Wolfpack 31-28. The Tar Heels entered the 4th quarter with an 11 point deficit and came all the way back, only to surrender a field goal at the end of the game. Other significant losses this week include Arkansas getting blown out by South Carolina 44-14 and USF knocking off TCU 24-17.
Also note that the WAC has two teams in the BCS Top 25 now. And even better, 9-0 Fresno State and 9-0 Nevada are both on a collision course in two weeks in Reno, NV. Interestingly, both teams have recently been connected to rumors placing both of them in the Big 12 next season. With Texas on the brink of formally announcing its plan to leave the Big 12 and become independent next season, the conference is looking to mitigate its potential losses.Last edited by waytofailself; 09-01-2011, 07:09 AM.Comment

Re: Wake Forest NCAA 12 Dynasty: Competitive Football Would be Nice!
incredible job this season man. That win over Clemson was absolutely insane, I just knew you guys had lost the game. Awesome clip, though, and awesome turn of events. I bet you were in shock. Nice statement win over the Cavs as well, the end to this season is going to be like a circus. I'd love to see you guys represent the ACC on the big stage.Virginia Tech Hokies NCAA 2011 Dynasty Thread :
