    RIVALRY GAME
November Snow Makes for Memorable Contest

Normally when it snows North Carolina drivers tend to either shut themselves in or drive like maniacs and wrap themselves around telephone polls while pulling out of a parking lot -- every car loaded down with a month's supply of milk and bread. But for today Wallace-Wade Stadium was packed. Maybe it was because in the hours before game time the snow is pretty on the grass but the roads are mostly unaffected. The brunt of the snowstorm is supposed to come later tonight.

With #5 Wake Forest coming to town, Duke had the perfect opportunity to redeem itself of its recent slide and thrust itself back into the national spotlight. And the fans that "braved" the weather or stayed indoors to watch the game on ABC were in for another classic in this longstanding, if unheralded, rivalry.

The lines get ready to collide in the snow during a freak snow storm at Durham.

The winds were swirling, the snow was getting progressively heavier, but what made for pretty pictures turned ugly on the field early. Wake nearly broke early due to a nasty roughing the passer penalty on 3rd and long to keep Duke's drive alive. Fortunately for the Demon Deacons, QB Edward Suggs uncharacteristically forced the ball into double coverage and the Deacon defense held by snatching the ball out of the air.

Suggs has been outstanding all season, but it was clear early that both teams were feeling the pressure of having to perform -- especially with the nation watching and the snow coming down. Both teams made mistakes in coverage early, but also blew blocking assignments that killed promising drives. And worse for Wake Forest, HB Patrick Mitchell got his ankle rolled on while trying to run for a touchdown from the 5 yard line. Fortunately the injury was not serious, but Travis Lewis would get substantial playing time to carry the load.

The Deacons may have drawn first blood with a Lewis touchdown, but it was the Blue Devils that seized control of the game early. With Suggs brushing off his early game miscue, he proceeded to slice through the Wake Forest defense like he has everyone else this year. Big plays happened early and often.

Just like last year, Suggs was on target early and his receivers made plays down the field.

Suggs was proficient through the air, but what had to kill the Deacons the most actually happened on the drive after Suggs hit Jamie Humphrey with a 52 yard bomb. The Deacons were in great position. Freshman Punter Pierre Williams managed to pin the Blue Devils down on the two yard line. But a funny thing happened on the way to Coach Shapiro's killer instinct to go for the throat.

"We had the right call," Shapiro said at the half, "we knew they would be running to the right. That's where their line strength is, and we called the blitz perfectly. We just didn't get it done on the ground." No, instead, the Wake linebackers run blitzing allowed Domenic Davis, the forgotten man in the potent Blue Devil offense, to blast forward for 17 yards. But what had to embarrass the Deacons further was the next play. Suggs dropped back to pass, found no open receivers, and ran. And ran. And ran some more with no one around it. It was almost as if the Deacon defense could not believe Suggs was actually running. But when a defender finally shoved him out of bounds, Suggs had rumbled 45 yards down the field.

Talk about a sucker punch. A QB known far more for his arm than legs runs nearly half the length of the football field. And worse for the Deacons? The Blue Devils would manage to drive 98 yards in a mere 4 plays.

FB John Little blows through the hole for a 3rd down conversion.

The strategy for Wake Forest from there on was clear -- the best way to stop the Blue Devil offense is to keep them off the field. The Deacons went into ball control mode, running to convert downs and having Jenkins work the underneath routes that were given to him. Fortunately, the ball control would pay dividends quickly with Wake Forest scoring to tie it up nearly before the half.

Wake had more bounces go their way, especially on this play which nearly went for a TD.

Of course, the Deacons got a little luck along the way. Could they be a "Team of Destiny"? Maybe not -- the phrase gets thrown around way too much nowadays. But surely someone could make a quick buck off some t-shirts. Among one of the more ridiculous plays (see video above) involved one of Jenkin's few mistakes. He had a receiver open on an out route, but the ball sailed on him to a waiting Blue Devil. Patrick Mitchell, who was brought back into the game out of necessity, leaped forward and stripped the ball out of the Duke defender's hand.

Huggins would have picked up the fumble and almost took it all the way for a score. "I was just gassed. I should have had it," said Huggins on the sideline.

Even though Suggs was firing on almost all cylinders...

But in a game of shifting momentum and a close score board, it was once again all about which team could take advantage of the opportunities presented to it. Wake Forest had trouble stopping the Duke offense, but they found other way to kill drives.

...not every wideout expects a defensive end to drop into pass coverage.

The different looks they were giving on defense paid off when a defensive end in pass coverage stripped the ball from a receiver who had already shed two tackles and had only open field in front of him. Who was there to pick up the ball? Maurice Evans of course -- who seems to be everywhere on every play. And as an added bonus Wake tacked on a field goal to take a 10 point lead into the half.

But the Blue Devils were not done. With each coach making halftime adjustments, the game became far more defensive in the second half. No one was able to make any ground on the other until the 4th quarter, where Suggs did what he does best -- at least earlier in the season: work the clutch and will the Blue Devils to victory. Wake Forest was getting everything it could handle, and Duke's early 4th quarter touchdown pass to Jamie Humphrey got the home crowd back into the game.

But it was the 2nd drive that was key. Once again Suggs was slicing through the defense with both his arm and his feet. The Blue Devils laughed at 3rd down and managed to work the no huddle both out of the run and pass. The Deacon defense was baffled, and soon Duke soon found itself in the red zone and poised to take the lead.

But all that ended with one transcendent play from Senior CB Aaron Hall.

Suggs driving Duke down to take a 4th Quarter lead (ed note: Psychic DB much?).

"I watched the QB. That's all there is to it. No magic tricks or anything, I just saw 19 (Suggs) turn more to the left, look more to the left, and plant. I knew right then that the ball wasn't going to the middle. So I jumped. Coach says you gotta take the right risks to be the best. Worked out good that time."

Hall's long interception put Wake Forest in fantastic field position. And Mitchell's final touchdown run put the game out of reach of the Blue Devils for good. In the end, Wake Forest pushes ahead to avenge last year's shocking defeat in Durham by a final score of 31-21.

Coach's Take: The good teams find ways to win. Today we were a good team. The right kind of good team. I've said it before and I'll say it again: we're going to get everyone's best shot. Duke is outstanding, but our defensive Seniors stepped up all day to make plays. I couldn't imagine a better day for football than today, and we're all very happy to come out of here on top.

What's Next: Duke (6-4) will have to wonder what is happening to them as their season unravels. Next week they host the Clemson Tigers. As for Wake Forest (10-0), their 3 game road trip is finished and they return to BB&T Field to face NC State.

Shock is the right word, especially since there was no booth review. Like I said before, it was my first game on Heisman difficulty. Color me incredibly surprised to see the CPU make a Varsity level mistake -- but that's football.

Hopefully we can give the ACC some good news later this year. Thanks for the praise, and glad you're enjoying the ride.

        Game Notes
Two Top 25 teams clash in a game for pride. If NC State manages to pull off an upset against an undefeated ACC team for the second time in three weeks, the Wolfpack faithful will have a lot to complain about. Before the season started a scheduling error allowed Wake Forest to pick up an extra conference game, and as a result there is no way NC State can overtake Wake's 8-0 conference record. Despite complaints, the ACC made the unpopular decision of just letting the games play out. But here we are today, and if Wake Forest was merely 7-0, State could hold a tiebreaker and potentially be the team playing in the ACC title game.

But if the Wolfpack loses, there's no room to make a stink -- and from the looks of it Wake Forest is going to have the upper hand. An unheralded defense coming into the season is spearheaded by rising stars like
OLB James Cross and SS Maurice Evans along with Preseason All-Americans FS Brian Graham and DT Corey Benjamin. The ball hawking defenders have helped lead the Deacons to an undefeated record by way of a ridiculous turnover margin. For the Wolfpack to stand a chance, QB Eric Romero, HB Adam Parham and the entire offense must not be baited into making mistakes. Wake thrives on the short field.

NC State takes six straight victories into BB&T Field, including handing
North Carolina its first loss. But Wake Forest has looked unflappable at home the entire season, and despite NC State's best efforts the Deacons will carry the day 34-27.

          RIVALRY GAME
          No Shame in Being Offensive

Wake Forests' Special Teams came through in a big way against NC State.

Sometimes the defense just gets to take a day off. Today was one of those days. A 39 point 2nd quarter punctuated the shoot out. And while ACC seeding was not in play, Wake Forest was still in the hunt for the first undefeated football season in school history. But NC State brought its "A" game and kept pace with the Deacons every step of the way.

RB Adam Parham had a field day on the ground against the Deacon defense.

Wake Forest capitalized on an early interception and an early fumble. They quickly built a 14 point lead, but NC State took the game back with the power running of Adam Parham. He bullied over defenders and averaged a blistering 6.8 yards per carry. Unfortunately for the Wolfpack, he also fumbled three times during the game. And while Eric Romero was highly effective throughout the game, once again it was the disparity of mistakes that made all the difference.

QB Eric Romero brought the Wolfpack back into the game with passes like this.

NC State and Wake Forest were both keeping pace on the score board, but Wake Forest had to do far less work. With each NC State turnover, the Deacons constantly had great field position. No matter how strong the NC State defense started, they were put under too much pressure by their offense.

DE Damon Taylor runs an INT back almost all the way back, until he was knocked out of bounds by a Deacon defender.

Once again, Coach Shapiro showed a tendency to drop defensive ends into coverage from time to time. Once again it proved effective. Damon Taylor managed to make a leaping catch of a wide receiver screen and rumbled down the field on the way to a sure score. Unfortunately, Corey Benjamin, who had gone downfield on the pass rush, accidentally ran into Taylor while attempting to block the pursuing Wolfpack. So Taylor did not get the touchdown, but the Deacs would go on to score later to take a 28-13 lead.

Of course, NC State was able to keep pace and marched down the field to get another quick score to make the game 28-19. Unfortunately for NC State, a missed assignment kept them from 20.

Maurice Evans scores the easiest two points in football.

On what should have been a routine extra point, Carlos Norman jumped the snap and made a diving block of the kick. The ball bounced the opposite direction down the field into the wide open green -- and as he has all year Maurice Evans scooped up the ball and suddenly turned into the fastest player on the field. The play should have been a huge momentum killer for NC State, but the Wolfpack bounced right back to score another touchdown on their next drive to pull to within 4 points: 30-26.

WR Tim Huggins has been hot in recent weeks, but he took it to a new level today.

And then along came Tim Huggins to close out the half. After getting a step on his man, the Wake Forest burner tiptoed down the sideline before waltzing into the end zone to close the half. It was just the boost the Deacons needed.

But it was the 2nd half where Wake Forest seized the game. Coach Shapiro changed strategy in the 2nd half, determining that grinding out the clock was a better approach than constantly letting the NC State offense on the field. Their first drive of the half was marred by a holding call that negated a 45 yard return. But 18 plays, 6 minutes, 47 seconds, and 91 yards later, the Deacons dug their heels into the Wolfpack with a huge drive.

Unfortunately for NC State, QB Eric Romero suffered a broken ankle when OLB James Cross sacked him on a blitz.

The Wolfpack and Deacons would exchange scores as the offensive explosion would continue. But as NC State was trying to mount a last gasp desperation comeback from a 19 point deficit, disaster struck. Redshirt Senior OLB James Cross came in almost as clean as possible on a 3rd and long blitz. He drove Eric Romero to the ground and forced Romero out of the game. Lock room x-rays showed a ankle broken in 3 places, but the initial prognosis of the team doctor was that Romero had probably hurt his ankle earlier in the game but suffered a worse injury from the impact of the sack due to not informing his coaches of the injury.

As a result, NC State loses their starting quarterback for the rest of the season and Wake Forest continues its unbeaten run 51-32. Hardly a fair trade, but that's football.

Coach's Take: The run defense needs to be shored up. The pass defense could use some work. But we continue to force turnovers, and that's what it took. That's been our calling card all year. They couldn't stop us, and they couldn't over come the short fields they kept giving up. But we're not going to get turnovers every game. We need to find ways to stop teams in three downs.

What's Next: NC State (7-4) faces Maryland to close out the season. Meanwhile, Wake Forest (11-0) attempts to continue its undefeated run next week when it hosts Vanderbilt.

I'm running with Matt10's Heisman sliders at the moment. I'm still evaluating whether I want to stick with them or how I need to adjust them though. I've gotten some close games and some blow out wins, but at least so far I have to work for it more than on All-American.

I never expected you to go from 7-6 to 10-0, I can't wait to see what this Jenkins guy does in his next few seasons, good luck.

Thanks for reading and glad you're enjoying it. Truth be told, I can't believe I'm 10-0 either.

Hey! Dare to dream man. I already should have lost to Clemson, why can't Vandy close the deal?

A star has fallen, another one rises. So it goes this time of year in college football. But with some games on the slate for this week that have gigantic BCS implications, there could be multiple shake-ups at the very top.

Auburn tumble from the top spot is just another example of why scheduling quality opponents only helps teams instead of hurting them. The Tigers handled FCS Independent South Alabama easily, but look at what the teams around them were doing.

In the game of the week, Iowa took care of business at home by downing Penn State 24-10. It was by far the lowest scoring output of the season for the Nittany Lions, but it took until the 4th quarter for the Hawkeyes to put the game out of reach on an interception return for a touchdown. It was a landmark win for a storybook season for the program. Also, Alabama cemented its place at #1 with a 52-20 blowout victory over South Carolina. Even with the loss, the Gamecocks have already clinched the SEC East.

As for Alabama and Auburn, they'll have their eyes on a far larger prize when they face off this week. The same can be said about a big match up in the WAC between Fresno State and Nevada. Two undefeated teams will enter, one will leave.

Playoffs? Every regular season game is a playoff game (at least that's what the BCS wants you to think).

Well folks, the Heisman trophy race has turned into a quarterback derby. With no one candidate able to separate himself from the competition all year, it looks like there could be a very split vote. Voters will likely be watching closely at each player's team's performance -- a loss could, fair or not, knock some out of Heisman consideration entirely.

Wake Forest and Vanderbilt look to finish the season on a high note, as each wants to down their rival. The Commodores want to close the door on a season that has been marred with problems from the start. Meanwhile, Wake Forest looks to close out it's perfect record and get good momentum going into the ACC Championship.

This should be a one sided affair. Expect Vandy's HB Stewart Chapman to be able to find running lanes in the Wake defense, but don't expect much more. Blow-out alert: final score 56-14.

Who knew entering the season that this would be the division of haves and have nots? Wake Forest has run the table through the conference and has clinched a berth in the ACC Championship. Maryland and NC State have also done well to turn their seasons around. On the other hand, Florida State and Clemson will have a lot of thinking to do over the off-season. Some heads might be rolling -- especially when the Tigers have been dismal for two years in a row.

The North Carolina Tar Heels control their own destiny. Win this week at Keenan Memorial Stadium against Duke and they will also have punched their ticket to Charlotte. Lose and a number of scenarios could crop up -- especially if both Miami and Virginia Tech win this week. UNC lost to Miami a few weeks ago, but defeated the Hokies last week. As for Virginia Tech, they defeated the Hurricanes -- thus meaning each team is 1-1 against each other in a potential 3 way tie for the top spot.

Want to avoid a number of tiebreaker scenarios? The Tar Heels just need to take care of the Blue Devils.
