Re: Wake Forest NCAA 12 Dynasty: Competitive Football Would be Nice!

    Week 14
    vs #4
    RIVALRY GAME
    Almost Perfection

Snow blanketed the Triad the night before and kept falling throughout the game.

With a beautiful snow cascading onto the field, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons charged on the field ready to put a stamp on their 12-0 regular season. But a funny thing happened on the way to an unblemished record. Lowly Vanderbilt actually showed up, and they came to play every bit of the role "spoiler."

HB Sam Chapman shows the Deacons the 'Dores are no pushovers.

Despite the snow, the winds were relatively calm. This game was less of slug-fest and more of an offensive showcase, with both Wake QB Curtis Jenkins and Vandy QB Lamont Jones showing their stuff through the air. The problem was that Vanderbilt had more of that "stuff." Vanderbilt only needed 3 plays to take their first drive to pay dirt, with Sam Chapman having a laugh while running through Wake's vaunted defense. And although the Deacons were able to respond with a field goal of their own, the Commodores were not done. Another long Commodore drive was capped off with the first of three touchdown strikes from Lamont Jones to Quentin Jackson.

Suddenly, the perfect Demon Deacons were looking at a 14-3 hole early in their last home game of the season against what should have been a push-over.

Tim Huggins beats the corner and outruns the rest.

Although Wake Forest is considered a distant 4th in terms of talent of the remaining undefeated teams (or, depending on who you ask, 6th behind Nevada and Fresno State), they did not earn their #4 ranking by laying down when the going got tough. Instead, the Deacons took Vanderbilt's best punch and counted with a number of body blows. Wake started its roll by Jenkins finding the increasingly reliable Tim Huggins on a bomb to close out the 1st quarter. Soon into the second quarter the game became the Patrick Mitchell show, with the star HB finding space in the Vanderbilt defense both running and receiving.

Patrick Mitchell beats the last defender, thanks to a timely Tim Huggins block, to score on an 80 yard screen.

Patrick Mitchell follows his blockers and beats Vanderbilt around the edge.

The defense would also get into the act with a fumble return for a touchdown by Brian Graham. And what started as an 11 point deficit turned into a 17 point advantage with four straight touchdowns. The Deacons were on a roll midway through the third quarter leading 31-14.

Unfortunately for the Deacons, the potency of the offense disappeared when Mitchell went down. He suffered an injury while getting tackled on his last touchdown run, and it was up to Trey Lewis to one again carry the load the rest of the way. And while Lewis put up good numbers, he could not get key third down conversions. The Commodores had opportunities to get back into the game, and they took advantage of them.

Quentin Jackson blows by the Wake defense for a score.

Wake's pass defense was once again suspect, and with Vanderbilt in full blown comeback mode Jones was able to march his team down the field again and again. Every time Wake thought they had an advantage, Vandy would seize control. Every time the Deacons needed a stop, Jones was able to make a play. The freezing weather and snowy conditions almost made the ball appear to be covered in stick'em -- passes were flying true and the ball was staying in receivers hands regardless of big hits by the defense.

DTs Carl Benjamin and Corey Porter apply the pressure to Lamont Jones.

Outside of the one fumble recovery, Wake's vaunted opportunistic defense was instead creating opportunities for the Commodores. The pass rush was effective at getting past blockers, but could only manage to hurry Jones instead of sacking him and keeping the clock moving. And although Lewis managed to score a touchdown and give Wake Forest some breathing room at 38-21, the 'Dores never backed out of the picture entirely.

Lamont Jones finds Quentin Jackson between two defenders for their third TD hookup of the game.

Fortunately for the Deacons, the game had to end at some point. No matter how potent the Vanderbilt offense looked and no matter how effective they were at moving the ball, they could not string enough plays together to seize back control of the game. Wake's 28 point outburst was enough to carry the game, with a final score of 38-28.

Coach's Take: No, we're not undefeated yet. We've still got a bowl game, and we've still got the ACC. Don't give me that. Yes, 12-0 is an accomplishment, but we have bigger fish to fry now. And I know I need to watch the tape, but at least from what I was seeing on the field some of our defenders got out of position and got burned. We shouldn't be making those mistakes this late in the season. So no, not undefeated. Not perfect. We can't sit pretty with a sash over our shoulder and wave to the parade crowd.

Reporter: Any statement on the seriousness of Patrick Mitchell's injury?

Coach Shapiro: He could have been able to return today if needed, but we held him out as a precaution. He'll be ready for Charlotte.

What's Next: Wake Forest (12-0) plays in the ACC Championship in two weeks. Because UNC lost earlier today to Duke, the Deacons will now know their opponent until the conclusion of the Miami and Virginia Tech games. Vanderbilt (2-10) is done for the season.

      Championship Week Update

With a season that has been full of drama and intrigue at the top, the table has been set for a fantastic finish. Traditional powers are on the rise. Surprise contenders are poised to show if they belong or if they're pretenders. There have been plenty of big games, but Championship week bears significance not just for trophies, but also for who ends up where in the bowl picture. And with four undefeated teams entering Championship week, the National Title slate is still wide open.

There have been some very important results the past two weeks. First, Alabama holds on at home to topple Auburn and get in the driver's seat for the SEC. The game was back and forth throughout, but the Crimson Tide defense stepped up in the fourth quarter for a 27-24 victory. Next, Oregon demolished Oregon State 56-24. It was a chance for the Beavers to show they belonged in the BCS conversation, but now all eyes are on the Ducks. Finally, the game of the week turned into what could be one of the games of the year. After being down by as much as 17 in the first half, the Nevada Wolf Pack edged the Fresno State Bulldogs on the road 24-23. The game featured 3 fourth quarter changes and an outstanding ball control effort in the 2nd half by Nevada's running backs.

Entering championship weekend, three of the four remaining undefeated teams are playing for their crown. That means Alabama, Iowa, Nevada, or Wake Forest could be playing for the national title depending on the results. At this point, the Tide and Hawkeyes have to be the front runners to square off -- but they'll have to take care of business this weekend first.

        Championship Week Previews

        Championship
        vs.
        Tulane 7-5 (7-2) - Houston 9-3 (8-1)
Overachieving Tulane benefits from shifting from the West to the East, but they will face a tough challenge against Houston. This one might not be very close.

        Championship
        vs.
        Toledo 10-2 (8-1) - Miami University 8-4 (7-2)
Toledo has made a strong run all year, but they are far less talented than the Hawks. Can Toledo win one more improbable game and claim the MAC crown?

        Championship
        vs.
        #3 Wake Forest 12-0 (9-0) - North Carolina 9-3 (5-3)
UNC just lost do Duke and have dropped three of their last four. Wake Forest needs some help to get to the National Championship, but they will be playing what is essentially a road game in very pro-Tar Heel Charlotte, NC.

        Championship
        vs.
        #1 Alabama 12-0 (8-0) - #8 South Carolina 10-2 (7-1)
After taking out rival Auburn last week, Alabama gets a rematch with a Gamecock team they already trounced earlier in the season. There has been no stopping the Tide all season, and Carolina's coaching staff is going to need to make some significant changes to stay competitive.

        Championship
        vs.
        #24 USC 9-3 (6-3) 34 - #6 Oregon 11-1 (8-1)
The Ducks bring far more talent to the field, while the Trojans have benefited from an easy late season schedule to pull of 6 straight wins to climb back into bowl contention. Of course, their last Pac-12 game also saw the Trojans drop a game to UCLA. The Ducks defeated USC 43-28 earlier this season, and expect a similar result today.

        Championship
        vs.
        #17 Illinois 9-3 (6-2) - #2 Iowa 12-0 (8-0)
It doesn't get bigger than this for the Hawkeyes. Win and they're playing in the BCS Title game. But Illinois has saved their best football for the end of the season, including two straight upsets of Top 10 Wisconsin and Penn State. Iowa will need to stay disciplined to to avoid allowing the Illini to notch their biggest upset of the year.

        Inaugural Championship Game
        vs.
        #12 Pittsburgh 10-2 (7-2) - #19 West Virginia 10-2 (7-2)
If this match up looks familiar, it is because these two rivals already clashed two weeks ago. The Mountaineers were the victor by a score of 42-35 in a very close game. The Panthers will be out for revenge this time around in what should be a memorable first championship game for the Big East.

          Game Notes
North Carolina has faced a steady decline lately, but the Tar Heels might be getting healthy at the right time. Wake Forest enters the game with the #1 rushing defense and #1 turnover differential in the nation and are strong favorites to win. But with Duncan Wade returning from a shoulder injury this week, UNC will finally return to a balanced rushing attack to compliment their potent passing offense. UNC is 8-0 this season with Wade in the line up, but 1-3 without him.

This could shape up to be a great match up between the two top teams in the ACC playing at peak form. Wake Forest has taken on all comers, and there is no reason to think they won't continue today. In order to compete, UNC will need to both avoid mistakes and get their offense back on track. It's going to be a close competition, but Wake Forest will win the ACC 42-33.

                vs #3
                RIVALRY GAME
                Unlikely Championship Gets Physical

Someone who had the Tar Heels and Wake Forest playing for the ACC title probably made a lot of money in Vegas. Maybe they even had Wake Forest running the table. No, not happening. But despite all the hoop-la, both teams have a long history of clashing on the field. Fact is: neither team really likes each other. Today it showed, and both team's defenses made sure the other team could not break away and take control to the game.

Wake Forest entered with the vaunted defense, but maybe not enough people were talking about HB Duncan Wade. Sure, people were wondering how he would do after a month of sitting out with a should injury. Some even questioned Wade's toughness for missing a month due to a "minor" injury. Well, the doubters and the haters need to sit down and shut up.

HB Duncan Wade shows he was prepared for the #1 Rush Defense in the NCAA.

Wade finished the game with 217 yards and 2 TDs.

Wade ran like a man possessed all game long. He constantly made defenders miss, and was responsible for carrying a number of UNC drives. The Tar Heels struck first on a spectacular Wade run, and they nearly scored again until a drive stalled on the 30 and ended with a missed field goal.

Wake Forest seems to have mastered the art of the slow start lately, but that only meant that the Deacs were in familiar territory. After sputtering out on their first drives, Wake Forest finally worked their way down the field behind strong running by Patrick Mitchell.

Jenkins showed his versatility by rushing and passing for TDs in the first quarter.

And after a slow start, star freshman QB Curtis Jenkins finally found receivers and continued to make plays with his feet. Although there were a number of drops on both sides, at least Wake was able to get its passing game on track. Jenkins finished the first quarter with both a passing and rushing touchdown, and Wake Forest was in control with a 14-7 lead.

But the offensive output would not last. As if someone flipped a switch at the turn of the 2nd quarter, the game turned into a defensive battle.

DE Darren Taylor steps up to grab an interception.

Both Wake Forest and UNC were able to make some headway on their possessions, only to be forced to punt near midfield. Even when either team was able to force a turnover, neither could take advantage. Eventually the Tar Heels were able to tie the game on another touchdown run by Wade. The drive was aided by a controversial roughing the passer penalty against Corey Porter and blown coverage on third down. But regardless of the circumstances the game went into the half tied 14-14.

Throughout the game, Wake Forest's pass defense was able to confuse and shut down Tristan Holley despite being unable to get consistent pressure on him. The Deacon coverage kept Holley guessing, and the veteran Quarterback proved ineffective. It was only because of UNC's outstanding running game that UNC was able to take a 17-14 lead on a field goal.

But despite Wake's stout defense, the offense continued to do them no favors.

Jenkins makes the completely wrong read and makes a terrible mistake.*

The fourth quarter started with Wake Forest finally notching their first first down of the second half. With the crowd railing against them -- most of the seats in the stadium filled with light blue and white -- Jenkins looked to have the game under control in crunch time. But as he dropped back he got lost in the coverage or saw something that was not there. With a wide open receiver streaking down the field, Jenkins looked like a lost Freshman in a spring game as he went for an underneath route and passed the ball directly to a waiting UNC defender. But there were no take backs, and this was no spring game. Patrick Mitchell made a desperation touchdown saving tackle, but a play that could have given Wake Forest the lead instead gave the Tar Heels the ball inside the Deacon 20.

It was up to the defense to bail out the Wake Forest offense. But two plays later, Tristian Holley went for the 4th Quarter dagger to give UNC a double digit lead.

CB James Wilson jumps the route to make a play.

Wilson's interception kept UNC from taking a late 24-14 lead.

Wake Forest's cutthroat defense emerged at just the right time to save the day. Senior James Wilson made one of the best interceptions of his career, jumping on a post route to intercept the ball from within feet of the end zone and return it halfway across the field. The Deacons got back their momentum, and 7 plays later also seized the lead, 21-17 on a run by Senior FB John Little.

But UNC had over 5 minutes left of game time. With Tolley struggling and having now thrown two costly interceptions as UNC was driving, it was time for a change in strategy. Despite being in come-back mode, the Tar Heels went with the run and stuck with it. No one could stop Duncan Wade, even when it eventually became clear that every play on the drive was in some way going to him. There was no such thing as third and long -- Wade was grabbing yards in 5 to 15 yard chunks. And when Wade was gassed after carrying the team on his shoulders, Joshua Burns was there to be the closer and give UNC a 24-21 thanks to continued outstanding blocking by the Tar Heel offensive line.

The Deacons had just gotten punched in the mouth. Punked. Slapped around silly. Whatever other idiom you want to insert. But with 2 minutes left, Wake only needed a field goal to force overtime. And after a kickoff by Tim Huggins gave Wake possession on their own 44, the Deacons looked poised to at least tie the game up.

But their drive down the field was perilously slow. Jenkins could not find running lanes, and a wide open pass to Mitchell in the flat sailed over his head. The pressure was heating up, but Wake managed to eek out one first down before having to burn two of their precious time outs. The UNC defense was everywhere, and someone would need to step up and make a play before time ran out -- even if that meant the fate of Wake's undefeated season rested on inconsistent Senior Kicker Sean Gray.

With no options left, Wake Forest was forced into a 4th and five with a little over a minute to play. Still well outside of Gray's kicking range, the Deacons were forced go for it. Shapiro dialed up a number of short routes, but it was standout Freshman TE Matt Peters who broke his route a yard beyond the first down marker and had a step on the defender. Jenkins had made a number of mental errors throughout the game, but with Wake's hopes of an ACC Championship on the line his pass could have threaded the eye of a needle.

Fourth and 5, Jenkins goes to a wide open Peters to convert the first down.

Despite the accurate pass, Peters had the ball jarred loose as he was wrapping up the catch. And with that incompletion, UNC only had to kneel down the ball to close out a stunning 24-21 upset of the now defeated Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Coach's Take: We missed too many opportunities. We should not have been in the position we were in having to come back. There were too many mental breakdowns on both sides of the ball, and we served up the game to the Tar Heels. C'mon, you don't want to lose the championship like this, and definitely not to them. You never know if you'll get a chance to redeem yourself. Not like this.

What's Next: UNC (10-3) is headed to the Orange Bowl. Wake Forest (12-1) will have to wait and see if they can nab an at-large bid for a BCS bowl. But considering the Deacons did not have a terribly strong schedule this season, one loss may be enough to knock them out of contention.

That's a true heartbreaker. Those dropped passes make me want to throw a controller out the window, and to come at some a crucial point in the game.

^^^ while frustrating, it happens every Saturday and it is part of football. That is what makes these games so special, you never know if they will go your way or not.

Disheartening loss man, I hate this for you and for this team. Ya'll have worked so hard to get to this point, and then to lose like that after being 1 game away from a possible National Championship berth...just sickening. Hopefully you guys can get an at-large bid and make it into a BCS game. Best of luck!!

Tough, tough loss, man! I hate to see you lose a close game like that... especially after seeing that dropped 4th down conversion. Regardless, keep up the great work!

Well, he IS a freshman blocking TE. But he's usually been reliable as well. That was a nasty drop but I should not have been in that position to begin with. If you look at the replay you can see that I was about to scramble until the RDE got free. At least he was open?

Yep, that's what makes part of the game interesting. Once upon a time I would have rage-quit and done it again on varsity. But my days of enjoying techmo super bowling teams are over. I'd rather get a close loss like this that's my own fault.

The loss does mar the season a bit, but on the other hand playing for the NC in my 2nd year while still trying to rebuild would be, in of itself, disheartening. Like reaching the top of the mountain too fast -- it's like I would have achieved it but not necessarily earned it.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Then again, I wanted to throw the controller at myself having a receiver wide open for a TD and screwing up the play.

                              Championship Week Results
Rankings as of December 15, 2012

                              Championship
                              vs.
                              Tulane 33 - Houston 36 (2 OT)
The Cougars shock Tulane with a 4th quarter 14 point comeback that featured over 400 yards passing. The teams traded field goals in the first OT, but the Tulane was shut out in the 2nd.

                              Championship
                              vs.
                              Toledo 14 - Miami University 41
It wasn't close from the start. Miami could have run up the score even more in the 2nd half but chose not to.

                              Championship
                              vs.
                              #8 Wake Forest 21 - #18 North Carolina 24
UNC pulls off the upset on the back of its running game despite Wake Forest holding the Tar Heels to under 100 yards passing.

                              Championship
                              vs.
                              #1 Alabama 31 - #12 South Carolina 14
Although the game was closer than their match up earlier this season, Alabama took control in the 2nd half thanks to two 80+ yard touchdowns and nearly 300 total yards rushing.

                              Championship
                              vs.
                              USC 29 - #4 Oregon 31
USC nearly comes back from 23 points down in the 2nd half, but missing their first 2 point conversion meant they would need one extra score. But OU held onto the ball for the last 2 minutes and survive.

                              Championship
                              vs.
                              #23 Illinois 14 - #2 Iowa 28
Hawkeyes carry the day on the back of their Heisman candidate star quarterback, who threw for nearly 300 yards and three scores. Illinois could not keep up with the efficient Iowa offense.

                              Inaugural Championship Game
                              vs.
                              #11 Pittsburgh 42 - #25 West Virginia 35
Same score line from a few weeks ago, but flipped result. No team was up by more than 7 points at any time during the game, and the Panthers and Mountaineers traded scores for the entire 2nd half. Pitt won by a ball control drive that held the ball for most of the 4th quarter.

A lot of hardware is given out during December, but Wake's amazing run was recognized by a number of pundits and publications. Of every team in the country, the Demon Deacons by far left with the most hardware. Despite not playing in the National Championship game, the Deacs are definitely winners this season.

Thoughts: the defense really stepped up this year. That was the key to Wake being able to go undefeated. Although the offense has not been able to rack up as many stats in order to get recognition, part of the reason is because they were playing with such a short field all year. Major kudos to James Cross, who only played special teams his first years at Wake and turns his only year starting into one of the best in the nation. Also pleased to see Jenkins make it as a freshman All-American. Should not have been so surprised by that though -- not with how many games he's won for me.
