Swing Your Sword: Mike Leach's Second Chance

Leach was fired after 10 successful years at Texas Tech

Two years ago, amidst scandal and rumor, wildly popular and successful former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach was fired from his job. Leach was accused of improper player concussion treatment, and the "scandal" was brought to the forefront of the sporting world when it turned out the player was ESPN College Football analyst Craig James' son. So, of course, the story was sensationalized, spun-out of control, and accusation after accusation, rumor after rumor, and he-said/he-said stories all started to pile upon on another to beyond the breaking point. This, of course, lead to Texas Tech firing the same coach that had spent a decade making a once irrelevant football program matter in the college football world.

Mike Leach was known for one thing as a head-coach: his prolific passing offense and, slightly eccentric, yet brilliant offensive mind. Leach churned out a succession of record-breaking quarterbacks, none with particularly obvious NFL talent. No lead was ever safe against a Mike Leach led offense. Leach built a knack for shootouts, scoring points in a hurry and in bunches, and come-from-behind victories. One game in particular that stands out is Texas Tech's comeback victory over Minnesota in the 2006 Insight Bowl. Tech trailed 38-7 in the third quarter before mounting the biggest comeback in bowl history as they beat Minnesota 44-41 in overtime.

Unfortunately, all of that is a thing of the past. Leach has spent his time-off announcing games for CBS College Sports Network. However, news broke recently of a list of five schools that interviewed Mike Leach to fill their head-coaching vacancy.

Re: Swing Your Sword: Mike Leach's Second Chance

The Mike Leach sweepstakes finally came to an end last night. We were given word that Leach had secretly interviewed for the head-coaching job at five different schools. Those five schools, we can confirm, were: UNLV, UTEP, Washington State Colorado, and Indiana.

"I mulled over all of my options. All five schools had their appeal but, in the end, I went with the school I felt had the most in place for me to implement my style of play and my principles. Indiana University is a great institution in a great conference and I could not pass up the opportunity to build a tradition at a school with a wide-open and mostly blank history book."

Indiana University President Michael McRobbie introduces Mike Leach as the new head-coach of the football team.

There is some speculation Leach took the job solely based on the recent verbal commitment of five-star quarterback Gunner Kiel. Kiel is the number one ranked quarterback by both Scout and Rivals recruiting services. Whether it's true or not, there is no doubt Leach will have a quarterback in place starting in the 2012 season to run his offense. Until then, there will be an intense quarterback battle between Kiel's older brother Dusty, and fellow red-shirt sophomore Edward Wright-Baker. Both bring their unique style to the position as Kiel is a pocket-passing quarterback while Wright-Baker has the ability to also hurt defenses with his legs.

One thing is for certain, excitement in Bloomington, Indiana for football season is at an all-time high, and only time will tell if Leach can have the same kind of success here that he had at Texas Tech.

Re: Swing Your Sword: Mike Leach's Second Chance

Game One of Mike Leach Era Ends in Heartbreaking Loss

Derrick Bryant intercepts a pass to seal the game for LSU.

Baton Rouge, LA -- Trailing 21-0 in Death Valley Mike Leach wasn't worried. It's who he is, it's what he's programmed not to do as a head coach..."We knew we could get back in the game. We were having trouble getting adjusted to their speed on defense and physicality up front, but once we did, we played fine and had a chnace to win at the end." After a first half in which Indiana only managed 103 total yards of offense, they trailed 21-3 going into the halftime locker-room after a 46 yard field-goal by kicker Mitch Ewald.

Dre Muhammad makes a TD catch over an LSU defender.

The third quarter, however, is when things finally started to click for the Hoosiers against the stingy Tiger defense. Indiana would outscore LSU 14-0 in the third quarter behind a 16 yard pass from Edward Wright-Baker to Nick Turner and a 20 yard pass from Wright-Baker to Dre Muhammad. That made it a 21-17 game heading into the final 8:00 of play. Indiana added another Ewald field goal with 3:00 to go to make it a 21-20 game in favor of LSU. After forcing LSU to a three-and-out Indiana had the ball on the 41 yard line of LSU with just 0:43 to go, facing a 4th and 7. Wright-Baker dropped back to pass and briefly had his tight-end Max Dedmond breaking open. However, LSU safety Derrick Bryant made a break on the ball and stepped in front of Dedmond for a game-clinching interception.

Damarlo Belcher knifes his way through the LSU defense.

If you're one for moral victories, no one expected Indiana to go into Death Valley and even compete with LSU. And, to be honest, after falling behind 21-3 at halftime with barely 100 yards of total offense, it looked like the rout was one. However, Indiana remained tough and had a chance to win in the end. It appears the Mike Leach era could be, at the very least, an exciting one.

Indiana Gets First Win in Leach Era, 47-23 Over Virginia; Kiel Sets Team Record

Bloomington, IN -- It was only a matter of time, I suppose, but a Mike Leach quarterback has already set a school passing record. After a disgruntled Mike Leach benched Edward Wright-Baker, back-up quarterback Dusty Kiel only needed three quarters to set a school record for pasing yards in a game with 426 yards on 20/36 passing. Kiel also had two touchdown passes against zero interceptions.

Kiel's favorite target was star senior wide-receiver Demarlo Belcher who had seven catches for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Not to be outdone by the passing game, running-back Darius Willis tallied 111 yards on 22 carries and found the endzone four times.

"It was a great all-around effort by our offense. I have to nod my head to the defense, too, because they played an exceptional game. It's nice to get the first win out of the way, but I plan on it just being one of many." -Mike Leach

West Virginia Outlasts Indiana in Overtime

Morgantown, WV -- In a game that featured two quarterbacks that combined for over 900 yards passing and eight touchdowns, and two offenses that combined for over 1,000 yards of total offense, there was plenty of get you off of your seat moments. A valiant Indiana squad fought until the very end on the road against a very talented West Virginia squad. A missed field goal by Indiana n the second overtime, though left the door open for the Mountaineers, who shut the door with a field-goal of their own.

"Yes, the loss hurts, but I can't hang my head because we fought hard and had a chacne to win. A few less mistakes and we are sitting here talking about a win. I feel we're on the right path but it will take time." -Mike Leach

Ted Bolser makes a catch over the middle.

Dusty Kiel hits Dre Muhammad for an 81 yard touchdown.

                  Adam Replogle sacks the quarterback.

Kiel hits Kofi Hughes for a 75 yard TD late in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Andrew Bui runs over an Indiana defender on his way to a 43 yard touchdown.

Indiana Hangs on for 38-35 Win Over Penn State

Dusty Kiel Passes for School Record 517 Yards

Kofi Huhges looks in a pass before scoring a 30 yard TD.

Bloomington, IN -- The school passing record has now been set three times in just five games this year by sophomore quarterback Dusty Kiel. Kiel shattered his own record by throwing for 517 yards and five touchdowns. Aside from being sacked eight times, the Indiana passing attack was clicking on all cylinders. Their defense, however, wasn't. Penn State tallied a total of 518 yards of offense but fell short in their bid for a road-win. Two missed field goals inside the Indiana 30 yard line turned out to be the difference.

"I don't care how we get the win as long as we win. But our defense has to get better. We can't expect to be in shootouts every week and win. Still, we're off to a 1-0 start in conference play and I'm pleased with the effort our team played with today." -Mike Leach

Dre Muhammad watches a pass come in before scoring a 51 yard tocuhdown.

Dusty Kiel hits Kofi Hughes on a corner route for a 30 yard touchdown.

Hoosiers Fall to Illini at Home

Bloomington, IN -- Indiana was perfect on the season at home but that came to an end Saturday afternoon as the Illinois Fighting Illini stymied the Indiana offense for much of the game. Indiana did tally 460 yards of offense but moving the ball down-field was a tough task as the Illinois defense caused three turnovers.

"I feel like every time we got any momentum Illinois would make a big play and we'd be right back at square one. We've got some things to work on before next week before we go to Wisconsin, that's for sure." -Mike Leach

Hoosiers Get Revenge on Badgers in 63-31 Win

Madison, WI -- It was just one season ago Indiana suffered a humiliating 83-20 loss at the hands of Wisconsin. What a difference a year makes. Under new head-coach Mike Leach, for one day at least, the Indiana offense clicked from the word go and there was little Wisconsin could do to slow them down. The very first offensive play from scrimmage from for Indiana was a 70 yard pass from Dusty Kiel to Duwyce Wilson, setting up the first of nine Indiana touchdowns.

On the first play from scrimmage Duwyce Wilson turned this pass into a 70 yard gain; it was just a preview of a long day for the Wisconsin defense.

Kofi Hughes breaks a tackle on his way to a 63 yard touchdown.

Indiana quarterback Dusty Kiel had another big game with 429 yards passing on 21/31 passing and four touchdowns in Mike Leach's pass happy offense. Kofi Hughes was Kiel's favorite target on the day catching seven passes for 151 yards and three scores. Both Indiana running backs had good games as well, as Darius Willis gained 85 yards on 15 carries and found the endzone once, and Nick Turner 72 yards on just six carries for two touchdowns.

Nick Turner escapes a Wisconsin defender and turns it into a 64 yard touchdown.

"Obviously I wasn't here last year but I still remember seeing the 83-20 final from last year's game and couldn't believe it. That's not a score you forget. We weren't necessarily trying to run up the score but I'd be lying if I wasn't wanting some revenge for my guys after last year's humiliating defeat."

Dre Muhammad looks in a pass before outrunning the Wisconsin defense for a 43 yard touchdown.
