Foxboro, MA - The 2015 Preseason for the Patriots is over and here is what we've seen so far:
Quarterbacks
Kyle Angle - Great rookie season taking the ROY award home with him. Now with him having one season under his belt we should start seeing smarter passes and less interceptions. He got an upgrade in the offensive line in LT and RG, so he'll have more time in the pocket to do what he needs to do. Expect another 4,000 yard year with 25 TDs.
Chad Sapozink - The only backup that Kyle has. He's a low rated QB but can handle his own in the pocket. He won the backup job even though Beglinger had a better pre-season. He'll only see time if Kyle Angle gets injured.
Running Backs
Join Noel - First round rookie found his way into the starting position over newly acquired C.J Spiller. The Patriots ditched the grinding system of running the ball to a new faster speed back. Noel can and will get to the outside and eat up big chunks of yards at a time. We expect a 1,200 yard/10 Touchdown year for him as long as he can stay healthy.
C.J Spiller - Solid #2 back who should see a good amount of downs himself. He is the 3rd down back along with the 6th Receiver on the depth chat. Great hands out of the backfield and should see some balls come his way. He should atleast eat up 500 yards on the ground with about 30 catches.
LaGarrette Blount - This is our workhorse back. He's able to hit holes and hit them hard. Look for him in short yardage situations and when Noel and Spiller need a breather.
LaRod Stephens-Howling - Mr. Irrelevent. He's no longer a returner and is now taking up space on the sideline. He's the emergency back if needed. Not much else to say.
Wide Receivers
Wes Welker - Another year for this veteran. Don't know how much more he can contribute other that 50 catches. He has a big contract and is just there for reliability.
Bryant Ford - He will be on the other side of Welker taking over for Brandon Lloyd. I'm hoping he can contribute as much and catch at least 80 balls. Very reliable.
Devone Bess - Free agent pickup to cover the slot position. Showed good poise in the preseason but can easily move down the depth chart if T.J Riley keeps stepping up his game. I'm hoping to see him with 40 catches this year.
T.J Riley - Found his way just below #3 on the depth chart and should move up. He is the kick return specialist and has already taken one back during the preseason. He also had a couple 100 yard receiving games too. He catches just about anything that comes his way.
Andrew Apo - Another year and another roster spot. Andrew Apo is such a solid receiver and comes up big whenever he gets in the game. Should see less that 20 catches for him throughout the year.
Corey Perkins & Derrick Brailsford - Kick Return and Punt return specialist. They both showed great speed last year and continue to improve. I don't expect them to see much time at WR unless an injury takes place.
Tight Ends
Rob Gronkowski - Doesn't need an introduction.
Kevin Boss - Playing in the two TE set. He can catch and block and should be a great asset.
Kip Wary - Moved down a spot on the depth chart and is now more of a blocking TE in the 3 TE jumbo sets.
Defensive Lineman
Chandler Jones - 10+ Sacks. Nothing Less.
Vince Wilfork - Big Vince. Will be a Patriot for life and will continue to clog up the middle.
Shawne Merriman - Had a great comeback year finally and can now be called "Lights Out" again. With this front line, we should stop forward movement.
Linebackers
Mayo, Spikes, Hightower, Caine - These 4 are back again, albeit Mayo is injured, and will continue to dominate.
Josh Rock, Casey Matthews, Geno Hayes - The Back-Up guys! Good group of guys to have when injuries or fatigue occurred.
Secondary
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie - Interception city last year and should continue this, once he comes back from injury.
B.J Welsh - Now a starter and should improve to become Revis-like. Hopefully we can get some INTs out of him. Shouldn't let a receiver behind him.
Devin McCourty & Jester Collins - Old man and the rookie. Let's see if they can gel together and clog up the deep middle of the field. I don't want to see any big plays get by them.
Curtis Bros. (Khris and Jamari) - They may not be starters but have the ability to turn into great backups. Khris will be leaned upon as the slot corner and Jamari will be available for when Collins gets fatigued.
Asante Samuel & Alfonzo Dennard - Nickel and Dime specialists should prove well on 4 receiver sets and on special teams.
