Schumacher Makes Both Critical Error and Game-Winning Throw
Fans Experience the Roller Coaster That is a Rookie Gunslinger in a Big Game, Raiders Rally Late, 24-19

This game was a field position and field goal battle for much of the contest. Neither team produced a touchdown until the wild final two minutes of the game.

Entering the fourth quarter, the running game was trying to do something with Caulder out with an injury and Alfred Morris fumbling. The Jaguars were faced with a cold Maurice Jones-Drew and an off-target Matt Ryan.

Score was 18-12, and the Raiders picked off Matt Ryan for the second time, both by gambling cornerback Brandon Madison. On that play, Madison fell down, and tried to get back up, but was hit and the ball came out. Jaguars recovered, but the booth ruled that Madison was down when he was hit.

Morris then started running better, looking to make up for his mistake and Schumacher was making passes, playing decent football for the most part. But he would make a mistake. He tried to get the ball to D'Andre Ware on a slant, but LB Clint Session saw through the play and snatched the ball.

This looked like the kind of mistake the Schumacher critics would feast on.

But the defense was sent out to try to stop Ryan from working his magic.

Ryan started the drive off with a couple runs and draws. McClain was amped up on the drive, trying to decapitate MJD every just he got. He made several hits, trying to rip the ball out, but failed. However, he did put Jones-Drew out of the game.

Matt Ryan was undeterred. He continued working the middle, Raiders giving it to him for both time consumption and to try to force the ball carrier to deal with McClain's angry tackles.

Unfortunately, they did deal with those tackles, but time was ticking down. Raiders switched up to man coverage as Ryan continued his hurry-up attack. The first pass was incomplete as Ryan had to throw it away. Looked like the defense would hold.

Lyle called for more man coverage, the strength of his secondary. However, Tyvon Branch got caught looking in the back field and missed his receiver slicing towards the corner. Branch made the tackle and the Raiders called time to save the clock, just in case the Jaguars would score.

The defense was in a quandary. Man coverage could be beaten easier on short crossing routes - one missed cut could be a TD. So the team went with zone, not the best for the secondary, but hopefully the shortened field would help. On the first play, it did as Ryan just threw it away.

However, on the second play, the Raiders left a crack in the front corner and back-up tight end Bronson Johnson got lost in the traffic. The 4th year tight end saw the open hole and Ryan fired a strike to him for the go-ahead TD. At the time, it looked like the winning score as well.

Would the rookie QB's mistake lead to the first one-and-done playoff journey in the Lyle coaching era? Terrelle Pryor and Colt McCoy got the team to the Super Bowl - both replaced by Schumacher as starter - and this is what the team would get?

Not so fast. There was time on the clock.

Schumacher fired away, but three times couldn't quite hit Moore. So on 4th and 10, last chance for the Raiders. Schumacher did the unthinkable.

      He targeted someone else.

The Jaguars were guarding Moore as well as Ware as they were on the sidelines. They forgot about Jacoby Ford. Schumacher didn't.

Schumacher fired the ball as hard as he could. The safety, Landry, was heading towards Moore, but Ford leaped up for the pass, catching the safety completely by surprise. Before he could recover, Moore blocked Landry as hard as he could and Ford took off with the one gift he has, his raw speed.

Schumacher to critics: This is why I am your QB.

He ran into the end zone with the go-ahead score. Kneeling down while the team celebrated the huge play.

"Unbelievable! That's the only way I can describe this, man. That throw, the courage he showed, that's just amazing. So many guys would have crawled into a corner, he came out flung it up there and trust his man to grab the ball, " Moore spoke on the field after the game.

When asked what his feelings were watching Ford gallop home with the winning touchdown, Matt Ryan responded, "Just numb. I mean, you fight through that defense, knowing what you need to do. They pin their ears back come after you, blow you up with each hit, especially Rolando [McClain] in a clutch spot like that, and we fight through that to get the lead and use up the clock, and then with the last bullet in their gun, they shoot you in the heart and make it all meaningless. You...you just aren't prepared for that emotionally. It just sounds like a clichè, 'It's never over until it's over', then it happens right in your face...It's crushing."

Schumacher was the player of the game again showed why the team tolerates his mistakes.

Lost in all the euphoria and excitement of the final two minutes was the laser accuracy of both kickers, especially Janikowski, who was 6-for-6 on the day.

Notes: The official scoring stripped Madison of an interception (also removing it from Matt Ryan's column) despite the fact he actually did make the pick and the fumble was overturned. Basically, the 'official' scoring makes the play never happen and also adds a turnover that never happened to the Raiders, while still charging the Jags with a turnover that has no record of being committed on their side. The box score is listed with what actually happened and noted with an * by the value.

Conference Championship Round - Midweek News

Rams sacked the QB 6 times on their way to advancing to the NFC Championship Game.

Packers won on the road in Atlanta and are gunning for a trip to the Super Bowl.

            Raiders News

The Colts and Raiders indeed meet again. Their regular season match-up decided home field in the AFC and the Raiders won 24-22, although the Colts were a 2-pt conversion away from changing every thing. Between the two teams, there is only one loss between them, the last meeting for the Colts, since week 8 of the season.

The Raiders fell behind early in that one, but the offense got going in time and the defense slowly got better at closing down the Colts' attack. Shutting down Ryan Grant was key, forcing the Colts to be one dimensional.

Julio Caulder ran for 138 yards and a touchdown while Schumacher was steady and efficient, throwing 2 scores and completing nearly 60% of his passes. The balance kept the Colts off-balance all game, but it was a slower style of offense. Offensive points have been difficult to come by.

Patrick Peterson was the star defensively with 2 picks, but he also gave up the could-have-been tying touchdown in the final minutes.

This game figures to be no different.

The Raiders featured a hybrid style of defense last week, but it put Tevin Ash in a lot of pass cover situations - something the team usually avoids. Will be interesting to see how the team adjusts.

            Injury Report:

The injury to Caulder was not severe upon further evaluation and he will play in this week's game. (Read: no one dared tell him he couldn't play)

Raiders got real. Real basic. The first quarter, however, was real. Real strange. The first three drives went Colts 3-and-out, Raiders scoring on three plays, a 1-yd run, 23-yd pass, and a deep strike off play action to D'Andre Ware for a TD. Then the Raiders wouldn't see the field again on offense as Luck lead a 16-play drive that took 13 minutes off the clock. Rolando McClain made 8 tackles in the first quarter alone.

Next drive, the Raiders get to Caulder just pushing the Colts run defense around. Shoving them down the field with a few throws and Grant runs mixed in, which also worked. However, Caulder was stopped on 4th and goal. Score stayed tied at 7.

Colts put together another drive, ending in a FG to take the lead. Caulder, still furious about not getting in the end zone, took out his frustrations on the Colts again. He continued to drive them down the field with little resistance they could muster. This time, he would NOT be stopped at the goal line, powering through Bethea who bravely, and futilely, stepped into the gap to try to stop the score. Caulder drove a forearm and shoulder into Bethea's chest and two drives, he was into the end zone.

Later, the Raiders put another long drive together, mostly with Caulder, and this time, he had no resistance getting into the end zone from inside the 10. He ended up with over 100 yards in the first half with two touchdowns.

From there, the Raiders focused on not making mistakes and using time off the clock. However, Schumacher took advantage of the running as well. He used a play action fake and Dwayne Allen broke completely wide open along the right sideline. Schumacher fired the pass and he hit the tight end with ease for a touchdown to make it 28-13, Raiders.

In the 4th quarter, the Raiders would have to punt and Lechler put the Colts inside their own 10, thanks to a hustle play on punt coverage by Heston Hill. Two plays later, Luck suffered a safety at the hands of Jake Olsen, working as DE in one of the team's nickle packages.

That would end the Raiders' scoring, up 30-13. The Colts mustered a FG to make it 30-16, and then got the ball back. Luck then engineered a 2-minute drill that ended with a touchdown to Greg Jennings to make the score 30-23.

Colts tried the onside kick, but Jacoby Ford scooped it. Raiders could not get a first down as the Colts were selling out on the run. Still, the Raiders forced all the timeouts out of the Colts. Lyle opted to pooch punt instead of using Janikowski's leg. Lechler rewarded the unorthodox move with a perfect coffin corner kick, putting the Colts at their own 2 yard line.

A minute to go and 98 yards left to tie, Luck took the field.

His first pass was nearly picked off by Brandon Madison, but the next pass was completed to Greg Jennings against rookie Heston Hill for 18 yards to give the Colts some breathing room. Luck started the hurry up, but Jake Olsen struck again. The sack cost the Colts a lot of valuable time as they were all down field on routes. Next snap was another sack by Olsen, his third of the day. The Colts hurried to the line for 4th down and got the play off. The Raiders came with pressure from their quarters formation and Tyvon Branch put the capper on the game with the team's 3rd consecutive sack on the series and 5th on the day.

A simple kneel down sent the Raiders to the Super Bowl.

Some of the players didn't do a lot of celebrating over winning the AFC Title, their thoughts on finally completing the picture with a Super Bowl victory. Others, like the rookies Schumacher and Hill, reveled in the excitement. Either way, the team was moving on to the Super Bowl once again. The rookie QB and his ups and downs moved the team the full course. Now, he has a chance to surpass the two unheralded QBs before him and do what they could not. Can the rookie do it, or does yet another heartbreaking loss await?

"We lost in overtime, we lost 13-9, there's only so many ways to lose a game, " McClain laughed, "I think we've run out of ways. I mean, we could get blown out, but that ain't happening. So that leaves us with winning some kind of way and I don't care how."

Some would say the Raiders have won so many ways...and are out of ways to win as well...

                            Game Notes

The Packers stunned the NFC to reach the Super Bowl. A 'lowly' 6th-seeded 8-8 ball club, the Packers got in through the back door and has been stealing everyone's lunch all playoffs long. Aaron Rodgers looks to be on point and the Packers have to be a confident bunch.

The Raiders are the class of the AFC by record at 14-2 and pretty much took the expected path, winning at home against similar quality teams. The Raiders have made themselves into comeback kids this year with several last minute - sometimes last play offensive heroics or defensive stands.

Statistically, the Raiders are a top tier defense that generates turnovers against the pass and is very difficult to run against. Wilfork's injury weakens the middle somewhat, but the team has adapted, and anchor Rolando McClain is still terrorizing the middle of the field. The secondary figures to be tested, and they are a gambling bunch, prone to make...and give up...some significant plays. The pass rush will have to pin their ears back, even if it weakens the run. They need to get to Rodgers, ideally without blitzing.

On offense, the Raiders are an inconsistent group centered around 2 weapons, WR Denarius Moore and HB Julio Caulder. If those two are clicking, the Raiders stand a sizable chance of victory. If not, it could be a tough day for the silver and black. Again. There is one difference: gunslinger Wade Schumacher, who's drawing some comparisons to Brett Favre in both good and bad ways. This young man is undaunted by his mistakes, is daring enough to always try for the big play, and never gives up.

On the Green Bay side, their offense is captained by arguably the best QB in the game right now in Aaron Rodgers. Jake Locker stole the show with his unbelievable season with 55 TDs, but Rodgers' 40 TDs are nothing to laugh at, neither are the 5,343 passing yards he produced. James Jones and Jordy Nelson both racked up 1,500 yards receiving and Josh Morgan picked up the TDs with 14. The passing attack is how the offense makes a living, but they have been quite poor inside the red zone. That could come up big.

Defensively, the squad is weaker without LB Clay Matthews, but they proved they can still stop the run, checking in at 5th in run defense. A.J. Hawk picked up 107 tackles and some sacks while LB prospect Nick Perry looks to be an up-and-comer from the outside, and LB Brian Rolle, a maturing young player, drops the hammer down with 5 forced fumbles on the year. Pass rush will be key here as well. If the Packers can't get much rush, that could let Schumacher fell comfortable and make plays.

With Washington out, the Raiders will likely turn to Fred Marshall on kick returns and Jacoby Ford on punt returns. C.J. Gortman remains healthy and on kick return duty.

and Caulder Settle In. Raiders Hang On 34-27

This game wasn't supposed to be like this. The Raiders were supposed to be the ones with the ground attack and the Packers striking on the arm of Rodgers.

Well, no one told the football gods.

The very first play from scrimmage, Rodgers throws a pick-6 to Brandon Madison.

Madison gets the Raiders off to a quick start.

That would be about the only mistake Aaron Rodgers would make. However, before he got hot, Packers HB Demarco Murray did. He gashed the Raiders defense, making them look anything but like an elite squad against the run. He kept this up all during the first half, including picking up a rushing touchdown and over 100 yards.

Meanwhile, it was Schumacher doing the deed for the Raiders. He got the ball moving through the air as the Packers were giving up little on the ground. Caulder did punch it in from 3 yards out to get the Raiders back on top. This was matched Murray smashing it in from 1 yard out to cut the Raiders lead to one.

Schumacher then threw an interception on a bad pass, trying to force the ball to Moore. Giving Aaron Rodgers extra chances usually is not a good idea. The Packers made the Raiders pay and took the lead when Jordy Nelson made rookie Heston Hill look really bad in the end zone, and Branch didn't give a lot of help as well. Rodgers made the easy throw for a 20-14 lead.

Hill is beaten so badly, he's not even in the frame.

Denarius Moore had the rookie's back as he got by the cornerback and headed down the sideline. Schumacher let fly a beautiful throw that hit Moore right in stride. He cruised into the end zone to retake the lead 21-20.

Schumacher connects with Moore down the sideline for a big
                                play and touchdown.

The second half began badly for the Raiders as they still could not get the running game going. The Raiders had to punt. The defense came out and started getting a little pressure on Rodgers and finally contain the running game somewhat. The Packers moved the ball, but had to punt back to the Raiders.

Caulder found a little more room on this drive, but Schumacher was still using his arm to do much of the work, and a lot of that work was done on a another strike to Moore, this one 51 yards for a touchdown. Both defenses started getting into more of a rhythm, though, and that would be the end of any scoring.

In the fourth quarter, Caulder finally found some running room. The Raiders feed the halfback, and he started delivering some first downs to move into field goal range. This happened twice for the Raiders on consecutive drives, and the Raiders had a 14-point lead. The run game started eating at the clock and after the Raiders had their points, only 1:56 remained.

That was more than enough time for Rodgers to march down the field in a hurry-up offense, getting only small resistance from the Raiders in the process. Finley was the recipient of a 2-yard touchdown pass. Rodgers had all day to throw and Finley came free.

Still, the Raiders were up 34-27. The Packers tried an onside kick. After Jacoby Ford nearly botched the whole play for the Raiders, tight end Ausberry pounced on the ball. The Raiders were able to run out the clock with Caulder pounding out another first down, and the Raiders secured the Super Bowl victory.

Raiders revel in the achievement. Brandon Madison was named Super
                                Bowl MVP, despite Moore's efforts.
