    Week 15 - Midweek News

    No NCAA Football News

    NFL News:

Redskins HB Marshawn Lynch will be back in action this week.

Ravens HB Ray Rice continues to make waves for his excellent play, getting mentioned as a possible Hall of Famer if he keeps playing the way he is now.

Jerome Simpson (Redskins) will have to rest as he suffered an injury last week.

Peyton Hillis past the 9,000 career rushing yards mark.

Xavier Slaughter reaches 1,000 yards on the season.

Mike Williams has 1,000 receiving yards this season.

The Bengals are the first team to clinch a playoff berth.

    Raiders News

The AFC West remains tight with the Raiders getting hot at the right time. The team has won 5 straight, but are still in second place to the Broncos - just one game ahead of the Silver and Black. The Chiefs have slumped a little and are now in 3rd place at 8-5.

The Raiders are looking good for at least a Wild Card spot. No other team that is not leading a division has 9 wins. The Chiefs are still in decent shape, but the Pats and Dolphins are also 8-5.

Raiders' Next Game: Jaguars (9-4) @ Raiders (9-4)

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

Steady, Physical Play For the Win
Nothing Flashy, Just Few Mistakes and Hard Hits
on the Way to 20-9 Win.

While the Raiders fans would love to see their team score 50 points every week or watch Martens fling the ball up and down the field, it's games like this that will help him, and the team, stay at a high level each week.

There won't be much in the way of Sportscenter material in this game. Perhaps the pass to Crabtree for an 18-yard score will get some air time, or the questionable reversal that stole a forced fumble from Maeweather and a takeaway from the defense will get some mention. Other than that, it was a game of 4-6 yard runs, possession passes, and strong defense.

Even Maeweather didn't put up much flash - 8 tackles and a sack, which is borderline to a bad game for him recently. Those 8 tackles led the defense.

Maurice Jones-Drew was held in check for the most part. He got a couple sizable runs, but other than that, the team rallied to the football to help take him down.

J.J. Smoke is starting to get Brandon Madison treatment - i.e. he's being avoided. Patrick Peterson is reaping the benefits again. Ryan threw two interceptions, both to Patrick Peterson. Smoke was attacked a couple times - on the first play, he had tight man coverage to force an incompletion, and the second should have been his 4th interception of the season, but he dropped it.

Speaking of Brandon Madison, he was avoided as well. He clamped down on the slot receivers and tight ends all day long.

Giordano had a better game coverage-wise, though he gave up one of the few big plays the Jaguars had. The Raiders did ease off the blitzing and played more zone and vanilla man coverage - and it worked.

The front four also got it going later in the game. Julian Shade picked up some sacks and heavy pressure in the 4th quarter. Dawn sacked Ryan on the Jags' final possession, and the Meaweather sack came on one of the few blitzes the Raiders ran.

The Jaguars converted just 1 third down all game long.

The win is the 6th in a row for the Raiders, and this new defensive style might come in handy once Ash and Lett, two speed rushers at defensive end, return next week.

On the offensive side, Griggs was strong as he continues to heat up, and Martens avoided mistakes for the most part, eating the ball or trying to pick up a few yards with his "running". He threw one interception, trying to finesse a pass over a linebacker to Dwayne Allen, but the pass didn't have the arc it needed and was picked off. Otherwise, he was efficient.

Maeweather has to have DROY in the bag by now, right?

I thought Smoke would at least challenge him a little, but, pshh.

Could you give us a look at his season stats to this point?

Maeweather is currently first in AFC DPOY and DROY voting. Smoke is 2nd in AFC DROY voting (surprising given he has just 3 INTs). Julian Shade is suddenly 4th in AFC DROY voting.

Maeweather's stats so far (14 games):

          161 TAK
          43 TFL
          11 Sacks
          2 INT
          4 FF
          2 FRec
          2 TD

            Week 16 - Midweek News

            NCAA Football News:

USC QB Kian McKenzie's mystique was shattered at the National Championship Game where he made his team lose by throwing 3 INTs.

            NFL News:

Coach John Harbaugh won his 100th game.

Miami LB Rolando McClain will miss the final two games with an injury and has been placed on IR.

Panthers WR Okoye Jones caught 2 TDs in his team's win last week.

QB Ben Rothlisberger is now 5th all-time in passing TDs.

QB Aaron Rodgers has passed Warren Moon on the all-time passing yards list.

Packers WR Andre Caldwell may miss the rest of the season with an injury.

Colts QB Austin Duncan is injured and will need at least a week to recover.

The Bengals and Vikings clinched their divisions last week. The Bronocs have clinched a playoff berth.

            Raiders News

The Broncos got back on the winning track last week to move to 11-3 and stay a game ahead of the Raiders. The Chiefs are slumping down the stretch as they lose their 3rd straight game to drop to 8-6. The Raiders are looking as though a playoff berth will be clinched soon. They have a two game lead over the Chiefs as well as the Pats and Dolphins with two games to play.

Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (10-4) @ Colts (5-9)

Lett and Ash return to action this week. Raiders might be getting healthy at the perfect time.

            Roster News:

The return of Lett and Ash will put an end to the starting days of prospects Patrick Gjere and Julian Shade.

Shade picked up 6 sacks in his time as a starter, showing some pass rushing potential after all while Gjere proved to be more the run stopper that most thought he'd be given his scouting profile.

J.J. Smoke will get another chance at being a kick returner. Spiller will remain the punt returner.

            Notable Progression:

            WR Akia Green
            CIT: 87 to 88
            CON: 0 to 1

            IBL: 77 to 79

            CB J.J. Smoke
            ZCV: 75 to 77

            LB Kendle Maeweather
            MCV: 65 to 67

            Scouting News:

Raiders scouts may have found a match at TE. Bryan Zabal out of California might be the team's first round target. Given the injuries to Karl Kruger and the fact that Kruger isn't necessarily the best at blocking, Zabal looks to be more what the team is looking for. Zabal features a developed run blocking technique but still has the athletic ability to do damage in the passing game. Solid quickness and speed along with being able to go up for high passes are his top strengths. Has solid hands and should get better with experience at the NFL level. He's projected to go in the top 10, for good reason, so the team might need to work up to get him.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

              Smashmouth Slugfest in Indy.
Colts Stand Up to Raiders Physically, but Come
Up Short on the Scoreboard. Raiders Win 32-20.

This was one of those angry games. The tone was set on the first play from scrimmage.

              Literally.

Rashard Mendenhall tried to take a pitch to the right, but Maeweather knifed through the line and smacked the running back right on the shoulder. The ball came out, Mendenhall carted off, and Cooper Ballard, filling in for the injured Austin Duncan, started jawing with Maeweather.

They see me hittin'. They hatin'. Maeweather and Ballard exchange
holiday greetings while Mendenhall writhes in agony.

That fired up the little sparkplug that is Jacquizz Rodgers. The shifty halfback darted in and through the defense that seemed prepared more for the pounding style of Mendenhall.

But it would be the Colts' physicality that put up the first points on the board. Aaron Curry hit Martens as he threw and fellow Colts LB Jason Worilds scooped up the loose ball and took it the distance for a touchdown. Interesting scoring on that play in that it was not counted as a sack; however, the play continued so it was not an incompletion. Lyle was livid, trying to say that Martens' arm was going forward, but the referee ruled that it was an empty hand and the booth confirmed. Perhaps the scorer was a Raiders fan filing a "protest" of the play.

In any event, it's 7-0 Colts and the Raiders had trouble moving the ball. Griggs was facing a stiff front and Martens was taking some hits. The Raiders did get a touchdown, hitting Akia Green for a score.

The Raiders settled in a bit more in the second quarter. The offense produced another touchdown, this time by Bull Griggs powering in from 4 yards out. Then the pass rush got involved. And by pass rush - it was Keithen Lett.

He picked up 2 sacks in the 2nd quarter alone, both on back-to-back plays. Later in the quarter, the Colts' protect was so concerned about the pressure from Wagner and Maeweather that Brandon Madison came around the edge on a corner blitz to get the sack for a safety.

At the half, Raiders led 19-13.

Colts struck back in the third quarter. Jacquizz Rodgers was slippery and got by the front seven. The absence of Seawood in run support showed again as Giordano was no where to be found. Rodgers scampered into the end zone from 33 yards out to give the Colts a 20-19 lead.

The Raiders played a methodical drive that focused mostly on the ground game so the defense could get rested. It was enough to get the lead back on Janikowski's foot. 22-20, Raiders.

Then in the 4th quarter, the Raiders came with more physical play - driving Ballard into the ground again. Lett picked up 2 more sacks, giving him 4 on the game. Maeweather got one to make it 6 for the team. Ballard had made a nice play that beat Maeweather in coverage - or so he thought. Lyle couldn't believe the play was good and challenged. The coach's challenge was successful and the play was overturned. The Colts would have to punt.

The Raiders played field position and got another field goal to make it 25-20. Later in the quarter, Je-Marc Gibbs did his best Lechler impression and pinned the Colts back to their 2 yard line. This forced the Colts to play carefully and burn up time running the ball.

The Raiders got the ball back on the Colts' 40, and Martens couldn't pass up that good field position. He used 3 plays to get the ball in the end zone, finding Dwayne Allen for the score.

"Couldn't help it, " Martens smiled, "When I start on the plus side of the field like that, I just want to fire it and get us a TD."

The playcalling was aggressive, especially so close to field goal range, but the result made the game a two-possession affair.

Ballard then executed a beautiful hurry-up offense in the face of constant pressure by the Raiders defense. The Raiders' D was starting to strain and the Colts found themselves on the Raiders' 4 yard line with 1st and Goal.

Then the Raiders rose up. On first down, quick pressure forced Ballard to miss an open man in the end zone. Second down was a screen play that Wagner sniffed out and stopped behind the line. Third down was a 3-yard run by Rodgers that got back the lost yards.

On fourth down, they went with Rodgers again, but Wagner was all over it and stopped the play.

Now the Raiders were backed up. They couldn't get a first down, but used up all the Colts' time outs at least.

Gibbs' punt this time was not good. It had distance, but not hang time. The Raiders were fortunate, though. Colts were called on a holding call, which rained down a cascade of boos.

In desperation, Ballard tried to get the ball deep down field, but there was nothing working. The Raiders held and claimed their 7th consecutive win.

For the second game in a row, the Raiders hold their opponent to just a single third down conversion - and that conversion came with under a minute left in the game.

J.J. Smoke was thrown at just twice - neither ball was completed and he nearly had another interception.

"Gotta work on these hands. Can't keep letting those balls get away like that, " Smoke spoke after the game. Perhaps we see why the two-way player eventually chose defensive back instead of wide out. Smoke did nearly break a kickoff return for a score, but was caught at the Colts' 9 yard line.

                  Week 17 - Midweek News

                  NCAA Football News:

Florida HB De Ray Ray picked up 182 yards on just 15 carries last week, showing off his breakaway speed in the open field.

FSU K Kevin Kinslow kicked a 58-yard FG as time expired to give his team the win. The performance elevated his draft stock to second round valuation.

More news from FSU as WR DeVontry Wilson broke his collarbone during a kick return. He's still considered a 3rd round value. It doesn't alleviate concerns by the consensus as to his durability, though.

                  NFL News:

Colts placed HB Rashad Mendenhall on IR with a fractured shoulder.

Titans report that DE Kamerion Wimbley will miss the season finale.

Giants lose WR Desean Jackson but gain DE Jason Pierre-Paul for week 17.

Bears WR Brandon Marhsall scored 2 TDs.

D.J. Leopard fumbled three times as his Cardinals lost 36-24.

HB B.J. Graves reached 1,000 yards rushing.

WR Marques Colston has 900 career receptions.

Julio Jones reached 1,000 yards rushing last week.

Jeremy Maclin eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in receiving last week.

The Broncos reach 35 takeaways as a team.

                  Raiders News

The Raiders clinched a playoff berth last week, but will need to win their 8th in a row to defend their division crown. The Broncos continue their impressive season, moving to 12-3. The Chiefs are in jeopardy of sitting home as they lost their 4th in a row and have fallen behind a pair of 9-6 teams.

For the Raiders - Lyle will likely play everyone trying to get the division. The Raiders will need to win and hope the Broncos fall. Then it will be up to the tiebreakers. If the Raiders lose, the Broncos will clinch without taking the field.

Can the Raiders complete a perfect second half?

Denarius Moore joins an offense that's been clicking in recent weeks. Hopefully, no ill effects from his injury will linger.

                  Roster News:

Denarius will return to his #2 WR spot and move Crabtree to the slot. Akia Green continues to defy scouts who think he should be 2nd fiddle to Moore and remains the #1 WR.

Giordano's time at FS appears to be done. Brandon Madison was seen taking snaps at FS during practice, hinting that the cornerback will try filling in this week until Seawood's scheduled return next week.

Replacing Madison will be Shaquille Carillon as nickle corner, at least to start.

                    Hard-fought Contest in Tampa
Raiders Come Up Short as Offense Falters
in Second Half. Bucs Win 35-28.

This game was a back and forth affair for much of it. The Bucs were committed to running the ball, and Doug Martin had a huge day. The Raiders ended up turning to the air to keep pace, and that was fine for 3 quarters.

It all fell apart in the 4th quarter.

The pounding running of Doug Martin was clearly taking its toll on everyone not named Kendle Maeweather. But the team was hanging in there due to the pass rush from the team's pair of DEs, Ash and Lett. Ash picked up 4 sacks in the game. Lett had a pair of near misses. Bobby Wagner had a strip sack that was recovered by Maeweather, one of his two recoveries on the day.

But then Martens started feeling the Bucs pass rush and took a pounding of his own. LB Nigel Bradham was one of five Bucs players to take down Martens. That pressure started to get into his head and it lead to costly mistakes. In addition, C.J. Spiller fumbled a punt return that went for six to add fuel to the flame.

Jake Locker hit Brandon LaFell for a couple touchdowns - beating each corner once for a score. Smoke's inability to play zone was exposed while Patrick Peterson failed in press coverage inside the red zone to give up the other score.

Martens hit Moore on a long pass as the receiver attacked ball in the air. He then took it the rest of the way for a touchdown. Green was the recipient of a TD pass, and Crabtree picked up 2 TDs, evidently liking the slot position.

Crabtree may have to be a big part of the offense during the playoff run as both Green and Moore went out with injuries.

The story for the Bucs, and probably of the game, was Doug Martin. The Raiders held him out of the end zone until the fourth quarter, but Martin had 231 yards on 35 carries. Locker didn't have a lot of work to do, but he was efficient - 61% completion percentage and 167 yards with the 2 TDs.

Martens threw for 350 yards and at one point completed 68% of his passes before the pass rush starting wearing him down. He ended up with 57% completion percentage, 4 TDs and 3 INTs.

Maeweather was the only one still flying around the field in the fourth quarter. He had 14 tackles, a forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. Wagner did contribute with 2 forced fumbles and a sack. Bullock continues to have a far quieter year than last year. James Hazzard picked up a sack as he started seeing some playing time.

The Raiders end the season with a solid 11-5 record, but will be only a Wild Card. That means they will be watching and hoping that Green and Moore can go as there will be no extra week of rest this time around.

                        NFL News:
Record Broken! Maurice Jones-Drew passes Emmitt Smith as the NFL's all-time leading rusher. He has 18,438 yards.

Adrian Peterson is not far behind. He has 17,176 yards.

                        Packers fire coach Ron Rivera.

Falcons part with coach Mark Smith, citing locker room problems.

Lions QB Matt Stafford threw for 5 TDs last week.

Bucs WR Brandon LaFell scores 2 TDs in a win last week.

                        Seahawks (8-8) @ 49ers (10-6)

                        Raiders News

The Raiders win streak came to an end, and they have to watch the Broncos lose as well, which would have given the team a chance at the Division and a bye. However, a 7-1 record in the second half the season is nothing to be upset over.

Of greater concern is having to go on the road to start the postseason. The team will need to get their composure together if they want to make another run to the Super Bowl.

Getting Seawood back should help the defense perform better against the run. His absence has certainly been felt in that regard if nothing else.

Karl Kruger's return is interesting in conjunction with the loss of Moore and Green. Kruger could be the weapon down the field, or perhaps the Raiders will run it heavily and try to rely on defense. Dwayne Allen might be a better bet for a running attack.

Moore will somehow be better in a week from broken ribs, or at least he's convinced the trainers he will be. Akia Green's return from his injury will take until the AFC Championship game, should the Raiders advance that far.

                        Roster News:

Karl Kruger took first-team snaps in practice, so it looks like Lyle will go with the regular starter here. Marcel Reece will continue to see time as the 2nd tight end in those formations.

Seawood's return puts Brandon Madison back as nickle corner.

Patrick Peterson will handle kick returns this week. C.J. Spiller will get another chance to handle punt returns, though a mistake from him will likely see Peterson take punt return duties as well during the game.

Not a bad rookie year for Maeweather

How was Julian Shade getting any DROY votes? He didn't even make the stats list!

The WR's are going to have a lot of slack to pick up with the big dogs out. Pound the rock and let Maeweather loose.

Can't believe MJD got the record before Peterson. At least the Jags finally have something to celebrate.

Shade had a couple good games when he got the start and I guess no other rookies either got much time or did anything at all with it. He stayed 4th even after being benched again. Go figure.

I'm as shocked as you are with MJD getting the record first. I think AP got hurt and I don't think I've seen MJD hurt much at all. That might be the difference.

                                Battered, Bruised...and Moving On
Ricketts, Defense Lead Team to Victory. Raiders Advance on 25-13 Win over Patriots.

More injuries occurred in this one as the game was a rather physical affair. Two players, Danny Martens and C.J. Spiller, left the game and would not return. Crabtree also was injured, but came back in.

Martens started the game off on fire, hitting 5 of 7 passes, but was knocked out at that point, leaving Ricketts to have to finish off 3 1/2 quarters of the game.

Ricketts was known for his cool composure under fire, and that showed up big time in this game. The Patriots came after the rookie with several blitzes and picked up a couple sacks. But Ricketts would not waiver, delivering the ball accurately more often that not. He threw a TD on the day, hitting Karl Kruger off of play action, with no interceptions.

The lack of mistakes played a big role in the game. WR Bryan Mills fumbled the ball in the 1st quarter, which lead to the Patriots tying up the game at 7.

Then the Raiders defense took over.

The Raiders had a FG in the quarter, and on the ensuing kickoff, LB James Hazzard laid out WR C.J. Glass on the return. The Raiders recovered. Next play, Ricketts threw his TD to Karl Kruger.

Kendle Maeweather picked up his sack in the 2nd quarter to stop a drive. He then forced QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to throw too early and Patrick Peterson made good on the pressure with an interception.

Later in the second quarter, Je-Marc Gibbs punted the ball beautifully and Brandon Madison hustled to down the ball on the 1 yard line. The next play, coach Lyle sent Meaweather and Hazzard on a middle blitz from the 46. Hazzard was picked up but forced the play to Maeweather who didn't miss, resulting in a safety.

The end result was the Raiders taking a two-possession lead into the half.

The Patriots had a solid day from Ben Tate, and the run defense of the Raiders again had some issues. But the defense held on and stopped the Pats on most drives, allowing just a booming 60-yard FG from Gostkowski. Janikowski put one through in the quarter as well to make it 22-10, Raiders.

In the 4th quarter, the Pats looked like they were going to mount a comeback. All the running might have tired the defense some once again, and the Patriots kept the Raiders defense off-balance. But Davarius Bullock came up with a big sack to force a punt.

The Raiders were content to try to run clock and turned to Bull Griggs. The HB had a decent day so far, but he pulled out his best run of the game, catching the Pats pinching inside while he ran off-tackle. The long run of 26 yards helped change field position if nothing else.

The Raiders did punt, but the clock was closing in on the two-minute warning. Fitzpatrick got the offense on the move with the hurry up. The pass rush was still coming, forcing Fitzpatrick to throw early or take check down throws. When he had time, the secondary was doing it's job, forcing thrown away passes. Keithen Lett was getting going from the right side, forcing Fitzpatrick to run right into Tevin Ash coming from the left on one play.

The ball kept moving down the field, including a 4th down conversion where Ben Tate slipped away from Maeweather after a pass reception just enough to get the first down.

The defense didn't let up and kept the pressure on, forcing another fourth down situation.

Raiders dailed up a blitz, and this time it was Brandon Madison coming in untouched. Fitzpatrick tried to roll out, but Bullock was there for the second time. This time, the 4th down failed, and the Raiders just knelt on the ball for the win.

"This feels great, " Meaweather commented, "First time in the playoffs, first win, fighting for it on the road. We got it done. We did it as a team. I can't do anything without the guys up front keeping me clean and letting me go to work."

Meaweather led with 10 tackles and picked up the sack and safety. Suh was a big contributor, especially in the first half and picked up 6 tackles. Tevin Ash picked up 5.

"We don't like that bend-don't-break **** here, " Wagner commented, "This is what I like us to do - put a big sign that says 'do not enter' on our red zone. That's what we did today. No red zone for you."

When asked if he was surprised to see Ricketts play so well, Martens commented, "Not at all. He's a calm guy and has been a calming influence in the locker room. It didn't surprise me at all to see him put something together offensively."

Martens and Ricketts are night and day as QBs as much as they are as personalities. That was evident on some 3rd down plays were Martens would try to pick up the first on 3rd and 17 while Ricketts takes six yards and keeps the ball out of danger.

"Ricketts is more like a Greg Maddux type in demanor - methodical, control-type arm that knows when to back off and when to go after it. Martens is more like a young Randy Johnson - fireballing, strong-arm, aggressive, somewhat wild, but can be outright dominating. Ricketts proved today he can be effective, too, " one sports analyst spoke.

Effective - but not dominating describes today's line for Ricketts - 70% completions but just 180 yards and 1 TD on the day. Before the injury, Martens completed 70% but with an average per attempt of 9.5 yards to Ricketts' 7.

The team will wait to hear the results on Martens while preparing to go without him. In the meantime, the Raiders await their next opponent as their run for the Super Bowl continues on next week.
