      Week 12 - Midweek News

      No NCAA Football News

      NFL News:

The Chiefs will get Jamaal Charles back this week.

Redskins HB Marshawn Lynch picked up rushing TD #112, putting him at 8th all-time.

Cowboys TE Jason Witten moved to third all-time in receptions.

The Chiefs marched into Cowboys Stadium and shut everyone up in their win this week.

The Jaguars came out flat at home and were shut down 19-7 by the Patriots.

With the Raiders at 10-0, talk is starting to pick up about whether or not the team has the makeup to complete the perfect season.

      Raiders News

The Raiders are still getting no space from the Broncos and enjoy just a 2-game lead. The Chiefs and Chargers are still trying to find some sort of spark, but are both back at .500 and should not be buried just yet.

RG3 will continue to look for success as he's given the offense a clear lift to this point. The defense will try to clamp down on things for the stretch run.

The Raiders will be playing on Thanksgiving.

Raiders' Next Game: Bills (6-4) @ Raiders (10-0)

      Raiders Injury Report
      PosPlayerInjury Note
      --No Injuries--

The injury report remaining this clean this late into the season really makes one thing the stars are perhaps aligning.

      Roster News:

CB Shaquille Carillon will take the 4th CB spot from Lorenzo Hopkins this week.

FS Shyquawn Johnson is back in the lineup. Seawood will work in special teams again.

      Notable Progression:

      BSH: 97 to 98

      LB Kendle Maeweather
      ZCV: 65 to 67
      PRC: 90 to 91

      HB DeRay Ray

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

        When Everything Goes Wrong
Sloppy Play Across the Board Brings End to
        Perfection. Raiders Fall 26-13.

The Raiders looked like the old Raiders with the offense making too many mistakes and constantly putting the defense in bad spots. Tack on careless penalties on defense, and you have a mess.

Go figure - team comes home after a long road trip and plays the worst game at home.

On top of that the "perfect" injury report will likely go away as well. Tevin Ash had to be taken off on a cart, so that doesn't look promising at all.

RG3 had absolutely no help. His offensive line let him get sacked five times. His receivers dropped 8 passes, and he threw 3 INTs, two of which were the receivers not being aggressive enough on the football, something they WERE being on in recent weeks.

Even Akia Green, who had proven to be the most reliable target, looked very average. It took a while for Moore to warm up, but he did.

RG3 tried to make things happen with his legs, and for a while, that was the best way to move the ball.

Unfortunately, it was no where near enough. Terrell Pryor was basically what you'd expect - very average, only managing short throws most of the time, but he avoided the interception.

"It's very disappointing, and it's even worse that we lost it [the perfect record] at home and by playing poorly, " Moore commented.

And it also opens the door for the Broncos to close to within a game of the division lead.

Some might say the Raiders were just due for a game like this. RG3 has been a big spark, but it's still quite a few young and somewhat inconsistent players out there.

They were also bound to run into a defense that was "just in time" all game. The Bills also have Mario Williams, Willie Burns, and Sean Lee to spearhead its own defense - hardly mediocre players. Today, the other defense won the battle.

The pass rush waning somewhat also had an impact. Pryor didn't have a big day with his arm, but he also made some plays with his feet.

The Raiders generated just one single sack, and that was by backup DE Javia General, a rookie. Ash was hurt, Lett was shutout, and Maeweather had a few good hits on the QB, but was just a step late on most of his blitzes.

More concerning is the lack of interceptions. A secondary built around gambling and playmaking not making any of those said plays is not something the Raiders want to see going down the stretch. Especially since it was just Terrell Pryor at QB.

As it is, the Raiders have to settle for 10-1 and try to get their heads back on the final weeks of the season and claiming the division.

Yeah - Eagles cut him loose and the Bills picked him up either this offseason or last one.

Does suck about losing perfection, but guess there's a reason why so very few teams have ever done - even top-notch teams

              Week 13 - Midweek News

              NCAA Football News:

Georgia DE Kade Snyder has not shown the same intensity ever since the loss at Auburn. Scouts are starting to wonder about his dedication while whispers of health issues have emerged.

Wisconsin DE Rodney Morgan has shown no issues with the switch from offensive lineman to defensive lineman.

              NFL News:

Eagles HB Steven Ridley is expected to return.

Rams record a whopping 9 sacks against Matt Ryan en route to a win over the Jaguars.

Lions HB Frank Gore is now 5th all-time in rushing yards.

Bears WR Brandon Marshall now has 14,911 receiving yards, ranking him 8th all-time.

Ravens HB Ray Rice is now 8th all-time in rushing yards.

              Raiders News

The perfect season is gone, but perhaps more importantly, the Broncos lost. That keeps the Raiders' lead in the division at 2 games with 5 to play. However, the Titans won to go to 9-2, which could make the fight for #1 seed fierce, especially if the Broncos, currently the #3 seed, resume their winning ways.

              AFC West Standings:
              Raiders - 10-1
              Broncos - 8-3
              Chiefs - 6-5
              Chargers - 5-6

Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (10-1) @ Chiefs (6-5).

              Raiders Injury Report
              PosPlayerInjury Note
LB/DETevin AshOut 7 weeks (broken collarbone)

The Raiders will have to make do without one of it's trio of sack masters for the rest of the regular season. Since the Raiders appear to have a good chance of seeing postseason action, and perhaps a bye, the team will avoid placing Ash on injured reserve at this time.

              Roster News:

DE Javia General will get the call to start in place of the injured Tevin Ash. General is a completely different type of player - more a big, 3-4 type defensive end; however, he may function well as a run stopper in the 4-3 also.

              Notable Progression:

              WR Denarius Moore
              CTH: 88 to 89

              LB Jake Olsen
              ZCV: 89 to 90

              LB James Hazzard
              PRC: 73 to 75

              LB Kendle Maeweather
              ZCV: 67 to 70

              CB Brandon Madison
              PRC: 83 to 84

              CB J.J. Smoke
              AWR: 83 to 84

              Scouting News:

Rutgers CB Rashad Moore has decent physical ability and seems to have the mental side of the game solid as well. The problem is that his technique is very undeveloped. He makes a lot of basic technical errors that drops his level of play consistently. He is a high-risk, high-reward type player, but one the Raiders will likely pass on.

*Yawn* Just Another Close and Physical Game in KC
RG3 Warms Up Late, Accounts for Four TDs as Raiders
Get Back in Win Column, 30-23.

RG3 continues to play like he's what the Raiders have been missing all this time. It's not been pretty all the time, but since he's arrived in Oakland, he's thrown for 17 TDs and rushed for 2 more, including one today.

In this game, he picked up his rushing TD in the first quarter to get the Raiders on the board, but then couldn't make a lot happen for the rest of the first half.

Meanwhile, the defense was doing its thing, led by star MLB Kendle Maeweather.

The linebacker was all over rookie QB Kian McKenzie, sacking him 3 times. In addition, Maeweather forced a couple fumbles, one of which was recovered by Hazzard. In all, he tallied 14 tackles on the day.

"If we can keep putting on this kind of pressure without Ash, we are going to be in good shape. This is what we need to do, force hurried decisions and weaker throws, " Lyle spoke.

The defensive backs also made some plays. Both Peterson and Smoke picked up an interception on the day with Smoke getting his on one of just two balls thrown his way, perhaps maturing into the shutdown corner most predicted he'd be.

McKenzie didn't give up, however. Down 30-16 in the 4th quarter, he weathered the storm (read, Maeweather and Lett's pressure) and maneuvered the Chiefs down the field for a touchdown, hitting WR Max Simpson for the score.

But that would be all the Chiefs could muster for a late rally.

On offense, Griffin hooked up with Moore for a couple touchdowns, perhaps finding rhythm with dynamic receiver. Green was held out of the end zone, but he made 7 catches on the day, working more in a possession receiver role today. Rookie De'Aarius Bumpers worked in traffic on a short route for his touchdown - a 3-yard pass play.

DeRay Ray has seen some of his runs go to RG3, but today Ray picked up 100 yards on 21 carries. Griggs, Hampton and Caulder combined for 7 carries for 33 yards while Griffin ran 5 times for 47 yards and a TD.

The Raiders improve to 11-1 on the season, again holding on in a tough game.

Great Dynasty! Got caught up on pages and pages, since I`m new around here. I have a query:

How do you manage to have QB injuries? In all my time with my Madden Franchises in this edition (13) I've never really seen many QBs get hurt. I've especially lacked QB injuries when I play the game. Yet you have many.

I'm curious, as I'd like to improve that aspect of realism in my experiences.

I'm curious, as I'd like to improve that aspect of realism in my experiences.
You have to learn how to take sacks. Most Madden players will dump the ball at all costs because there is no intentional grounding called. Take the sacks and you'll see the injuries.

Well - I've been called for IG if I throw it away (using R3) in the pocket. CPU gets away with it for whatever reason.

And it's not just taking sacks - if he doesn't have 3 QBs filled in for his depth chart, then you won't get QB injuries. You'll get that "that looks like a major injury" commentary, but no actual injury.

You can tell this happens because the player "freezes" in his injury poses instead of writhing in pain. Happens at TE and FB as well. If you have only 2 TE or 1 FB in the chart - you won't get injuries there either.

So I always carry 3 QBs to give myself a chance of taking a QB injury. Carrying 2 FB is hard (I'm doing it now, but it's tough). 3 TE is more managable to a degree, especially if you like to use heavy sets a lot.

Also, if you put either K/P as QB #3, I think this gives you QB injuries as well. I remember doing that earlier when I didn't have a decent 3rd QB to carry.

Ah! So THAT's the reason! (Or, part of it anyway). Fascinating! I've been seeing a tonne of those "fake injuries" where players are just frozen still, and now that you mention it, it's been mostly at TE or QB. I wish there was a way to force CPU teams to carry 3. I'm running an online franchise with a close knit group of pals and we're in year 6 and haven't had a major QB injury during gameplay, but I don't think many of us have carried 3 QBs. Maybe a year or two here and there, but, otherwise, I doubt it.

                        Thanks for the tip.

                          NFL News:

Head coach Jeff Fisher won his 200th career game.

Jags QB Matt Ryan nearly posted a perfect passer rating.

Cowboys QB Jordan Norwell threw for 423 yards.

Lions HB Frank Gore rushed for 4 TDs.

Bears QB Jay Cutler is 5th all-time in passing TDs.

Redskins HB Marshawn Lynch is 9th all-time in rushing yards and 7th all-time in rushing TDs.

Colts HB Rashard Mendenhall is expected out a couple weeks.

Jags got a scare when Maurice Jones-Drew went down, but should be out just a couple weeks.

Bills HB Jonathan Stewart broke his collarbone and will be out several weeks.

Lions HB Frank Gore is now 9th all-time in rushing TDs.

Broncos HB Felix Jones went down with an injury.

                          Raiders News

                          AFC West Standings:

                          Raiders 11-1
                          Broncos 9-3
                          Chiefs 6-6
                          Chargers 5-7

The Broncos are trying to keep pace and keep hopes of defending the division crown alive. They remain 2 back with four games to play. The Chiefs' loss to the Raiders might have been a serious blow to their playoff chances as they are now behind a trio of 7-5 teams, who themselves are fighting for the 6th seed.

                          Roster News:

LB Kendle Maeweather was named the AFC's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance last week. He picked up 14 tackles, 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles.

Otto Freese will get the start at LT as Veldheer has been playing very poorly of late.

General's performance makes him the starter at RE again this week. As hoped, he played like a run stopping end. The team will hope for more of the same this week.

                          Notable Progression:

                          LB Kendle Maeweather

                          AWR: 88 to 89
                          CTH: 89 to 90

                          WR Akia Green

                          DE Keithen Lett
                          POW: 74 to 76

                          HB DeRay Ray
                          AWR: 66 to 67

                          Scouting News:

CB Ish Evans (Oklahoma St.) surprised scouts with how good he looked on tape. He shows good burst and quickness. He isn't afraid to go up to attack the football, and he seems able to play press coverage while still being comfortable dropping back in zone. The biggest concerns are a lack of overall focus and sometimes getting lax in man coverage. Currently projected as a late-2nd selection.

MLB Tevin Simmons from Kansas State looks like a well-round linebacker that would make a good depth option for Maeweather. He ferocious on tackles and has enough of a game outside of hard hitting to be worth putting on the field in every down situations, not just as an enforcer on special teams.

OLB Ladarius Campbell from New Mexico State is another depth possibility that should come at a lower-round pick. He's solid in most areas physically and he makes solid, if not great, form tackles. That's enough to be worth turning to in case of injury, though his mental weakness is something of a concern.

Fellow OLB Darien Alves (Kansas) has issues, especially for being a 3rd round projection, but is not terrible overall. He hits like a truck and has enough technique in his tackling to be reliable in hitting his mark. His solid speed is betrayed by just OK footwork and flexibility in his hips. He chases the play well and fights through blocks - if he keeps his head in the game, which is already the knock on him at the college level. It's uncertain if the Raiders would spend a 3rd on a backup linebacker anyway, but Alves' weaknesses lessen that likelihood in his case.

Steady Offense and a Big Play by Smoke Brings
                            Win Over Chargers, 27-10.

Perhaps J.J. Smoke just needed a year. After showing out in his debut and then going largely flat the rest of the year, the young star corner is starting to play up to the hype that surrounded him on draft day.

He was attacked in this game as Chargers QB Ken Marshall went to Pierre Garcon, the man Smoke was in charge of for most of the game. Smoke grabbed two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. He also got beat in the red zone by Garcon for a score.

Still, the TD by Smoke had the most impact as it took the game from 17-7 to 24-7 in the 2nd quarter, greatly dictating how the Chargers would have to play from that point on.

The rest of the defense held Marshall to a lot of shorter completions and the Chargers had to give up on the run for much of the second half, being able to turn to it again only when they closed the gap to 24-10 deep in the 3rd quarter.

Marshall was also hurried into getting rid of the ball short, and still took three sacks - 2 by Maeweather and one by Lett, giving both 18 sacks on the year.

The Chargers got to Griffin with the same ferocity, racking up six sacks. Both tackles in particular struggled in this one. Despite that, Griffin was on target all game long, having his most efficient day as a Raider.

Griffin completed 71% of his passes for just 213 yards, but threw 2 more TDs and no interceptions.

The TD receptions were by favorite target Akia Green, who led the team in receptions and yardage, and rookie De'Aarius Bumpers as he continues to impress from the slot. Green even got a 12-yd run on an end around as Griffin is clearly comfortable calling the receiver's number.

On the ground, DeRay Ray went back to having a pretty light load with just 14 carries on the day. He picked up 87 yards on those carries, however, as the lighter load seemed to keep him fresher throughout the game.

The lighter load was because of the diverse running attack the Raiders now feature. Griffin had 6 carries for 31 yards. Caulder pounded the ball 6 times for 25 yards. Griggs and Hampton didn't have much success today, but combined for 8 carries. Including Green's one rush, six different Raiders gained rushing yardage.

"This was a team win, you know, and we came together to get it done. There wasn't much flash and maybe it was boring (hope not!), but just solid football all day, " Griffin commented.

This game wasn't flashy, but Raiders fans should be overjoyed to see it. Not only because of the win, but because the Raiders can still play nose-to-the-grindstone, physical games and count on the defense to do the rest.

The win puts the Raiders at 12-1 on the season and perhaps getting on the cusp of winning the division crown.

Clemon's Trent Platt (WR) is contemplating remaining in school instead of entering the NFL draft this spring. For now, he's still the first WR taken, according to most mock drafts (3rd overall projected).

                              NFL News:

Jets HB Ryan Matthews is ready to play after his injury layoff.

Coaches on the Hot Seat - these teams are rumored to be pondering their head coaches' futures:

                              Seahawks
                              Rams
                              Cowboys
                              Jets

The Bucs have garnered 2,000 rushing yards as a team.

                              Raiders News

                              AFC West Standings

                              x-Raiders: 12-1
                              Broncos: 10-3
                              Chiefs: 6-7
                              Chargers: 5-8

Believe it or not, the Raiders still have not clinched the division. The Broncos are looking to make it a fight until the bitter end. The Raiders did, however, clinch a playoff berth, but anything short of a division title at this point would be a severe disappointment.

The Broncos are probably in next week. The Chiefs - they have work to do. At 6-7, they still have a chance - but they'll have to play consistently to give themselves a shot. Realistically, anything less than 2-1 in the final three games is not getting it done...and they probably need to win out.

                              Roster News:

The media is buzzing about the possibility of either Kendle Maeweather or Keithen Lett (or both) passing the single-season sack record. Both have 18 sacks with 3 games left to play. The closest any Raider has gotten before now was now ex-Raider Davarius Bullock and his 22 sacks.

J.J. Smoke was honored as the AFC's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance last week that included 2 picks and a defensive touchdown.

Pro Bowl voting is also coming down the stretch, and the most surprising performer at the ballot box is TE Tim Willison. Right now, he's hanging on the roster at 3rd place among tight ends with 325,287 votes.

Kendle Maeweather is leading on voting with over 2.5 million votes. The trio of corners, Peterson, Smoke, and Madison, and both starting safeties, Branch and Johnson, are all possibly heading to the Pro Bowl.

Perhaps in a sign of the offensive line's diminished dominance this year, only Welch and Max Justice figure to be heading to the Pro Bowl, though Patrick Seaver is trying to make a case.

Reports from observers of the Raiders' practices have noticed a lot more emphasis on zone coverage schemes. Speculation is that the defense could be featuring a new look (again) since the team is expected to select LB Wilcox, who is a pure Cover 2 linebacker.

Julio Caulder is moved up to the #2 depth spot now after Griggs has struggled lately. Lyle wants to see if perhaps Caulder is a better contrast to the speed of Ray.

                              Notable Progression:

                              CB J.J. Smoke
                              ZCV: 83 to 85
                              CTH: 62 to 63

                              WR Akia Green
                              AWR: 82 to 84

                              LB Kendle Maeweather
                              ZCV: 75 to 76
                              MCV: 75 to 76

                              WR De'Aarius Bumpers
                              RTE: 66 to 69

                              DE Keithen Lett
                              PRC: 53 to 56

                              HB Julio Caulder
                              BCV: 87 to 88

                              Scouting News:

Scouts took another look at WR Dominique Barnes and noticed that he has a solid stiff arm once he has the ball and is not adverse to lowering is shoulder to try to pick up some extra yards.

WR D'Antwone Baltimore might have seen his stock drop off the radar. He continued to struggle in catching when there's defenders near him. He makes much of an effort to protect himself than play the game. That causes his concentration to waver off the ball as it closes in, creating more drops. Also, despite his efforts to minimize contact after the catch, he often drops the ball if hit hard enough.

While much of the attention around Clemson surrounds Trent Platt, scouts who are willing to look off the front page found DT Bradford Archuleta. He's protected to go in the 7th round, but he looks to have some solid potential. He could be a good defensive tackle prospect for the team to develop.

                                Defense With Just Enough Offense
Tough Day for QBs as Both Bell and Griffin Struggle,
But Raiders Come Out on Top 27-13.

Defense was the name of the game on both sides of the ball despite the 27 points by the Raiders. Seven of those points came from Patrick Peterson getting a pick-six. The rest were managed by the offense with some aid from good field position.

The offensive line continues to struggle in pass protection. Griffin suffered four sacks in the game and had no opportunity to get into rhythm at all. He also threw 2 INTs and lost a fumble on a scramble.

All-in-all, a bad day for Griffin, but he did throw a TD to Akia Green down around the goal line and ran in a TD on a QB draw in another goal line situation.

Defensively, the sacks were generated by both the "sack masters" on the team. All six of them. Both Maeweather and Lett picked up 3 sacks to keep them neck-and-neck in the sacks race with 21.

Also helping to make plays was J.J. Smoke, who struck again for another interception, his 7th on the year.

Still, the game was in doubt throughout. Down 24-13, the Dolphins had a chance in the early 4th quarter to close the game to a one score game, but kicker Carl Boatwright somehow missed the chip shot 25-yard field goal try. This left the game a two possession game and let the Raiders concentrate of working time off the clock.

The Raiders did add on the late field goal, but it didn't matter as the Dolphins ended the game by taking a sack, a fitting moment for this defense.

Keithen Lett in particular had a game far outside of his character. He picked up 8 tackles, second on the team, and got to play some coverage, where he made a few more tackles.

"As impressive as Maeweather and others played, seeing Lett do this kind of game today was most impressive to me. He's not known for much other than his pass rushing, so this was something of an achievement for him, " one analyst spoke.

The Raiders move to 13-1 as their storybook season continues. Some might wonder if they are unstoppable, but it takes just one off game to derail everything come playoff time.
