Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

    Week 3 - Midweek News

    NCAA Football News:

Pittsburgh FS Furious Foster is making a name for himself with his big time play. He's been lighting up highlight reels with his fearsome hits.

    NFL News:

HB Dezrick Johnson rejects the Seahawks' latest offer.

HB D'Cota Bell says no to the Browns on the latest offer.

Another HB playing hardball as Ahmad Bradshaw sends the Saints back to the drawing board.

Lions can't get WR Randall Cobb to agree to an extension this week.

Jaguars lock up QB Matt Ryan for a couple years at $20 M total value.

Chiefs and HB Jamaal Charles (what's with the running backs?) can't come to terms.

ANOTHER big time HB giving his team fits is Doug Martin. He tells the Bucs to Buck off with their latest offer.

QB Cam Newton got paid. He signs a 6-year deal worth north of $120 M.

WR Calvin Johnson is now 9th all time in receptions.

The Texans expect to have QB Sam Bradford out there for this week's contest.

    Raiders News

The Raiders are off to a 2-0 start and getting some good play from the ground attack last week is a welcome sign. So far, the running backs are proving that it was just the 49ers defense making life difficult, not that there's any drop off from last season.

The Raiders will look for more of the same this week.

Raiders' Next Game: Bengals (1-1) @ Raiders (2-0)

    Raiders Injury Report
    PosPlayerInjury Note
DTNdamukong SuhOut 4 weeks (dislocated hip)

If the defense can hold on, they'll have Suh back in four more games, and he will be a sight for sore eyes.

    Contract News:
WR Akia Green and the Raiders came to an agreement on a 5-year extension worth around $34 M.

RT Darian Robinson also agreed to terms, signing a 4-year pact worth $22 M.

    Roster News:

Keithen Lett was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Kendle Maeweather's brother, Omari Maeweather, was NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Detroit.

Rookie FB LaJarvis Goodall will get the start this week in hopes of giving Marcel Reece a week off to rest.

Other than that - not much to consider doing this early in the season.

    Notable Progression:

    WR Akia Green
    CAR: 65 to 68

    DE Keithen Lett
    BSH: 80 to 82
    PRC: 67 to 68

    HB DeRay Ray
    AWR: 67 to 69

    LB K'Twon Wilcox
    ZCV: 85 to 86

    FB LaJarvis Goodall
    RBK: 76 to 77
    PBK: 68 to 69

    Scouting News:

WR Taqwuan Martin (Miami) might have an "interesting" name but he also has interesting talent. He looks to have all the speed in the world, is natural at running back kicks, and has the hands to develop into a true hands-catcher as a receiver. He's similar to Akia Green in that he's raw technique-wise. Martin doesn't have the best release off the line or run the crispest of routes, but it's easy to see the upside.

DT Joshua Donoghue (Arkansas) has some interesting skills of his own. At first, he looks like a 3-4 nose tackle (6' 3" but 309 lbs), and initially, his tape looked as though he was indeed a nose tackle instead of a 4-3 DT. But more examination of his earlier games showed that he thrives on trying to get the jump on the snap count and beating the center out of his stance and/or splitting either the C/G gap or the G/T gap for quick penetration. This has the Raiders intrigued, especially with a need for more interior D-lineman prospects.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

      Raiders Come Through
      Griffin Endures Rough Second Half.
Fourth TD Pass is Game Winner. Raiders Win 31-27.

Raiders-Bengals games always seem to be turnover-fests and this one was no exception.

In the first half, the Raiders were getting the takeaways. They picked off Reshard Watson 3 times in the first half.

The Raiders had a little trouble taking advantage of the takeaways because of a familiar issue - lack of pass protection. Griffin took two sacks in the first quarter that limited the points off turnovers.

However, Griffin threw 2 TDs and led his team to a FG just before the half. Watson settled in, moving the ball to a variety of receivers and throwing 2 TDs of his own in first half. The Raiders had a 17-14 lead.

In the second half, the Raiders' first possession was a quick 3-and-out. The Bengals tied it with a FG to make the score 17-17.

Griffin went back to work and started using his mobility. He didn't do too much damage in general and overall did less outright scrambling and more moving in the pocket or extending plays as much as possible with his legs. He did pick up one 13 yard scramble on the drive.

The drive ended on a short TD pass to Moore. Griffin got a good pick up from Goodall and used that to roll out to his right in order to buy time to find his man.

Griffin considers trying to run it in, but sees Moore about to sit
down in the hole in the zone, and fires a strike on the move.

The Bengals would not die, however. They also got a break from rookie Chappelle. He fumbled on a punt return and the Bengals recovered, setting themselves up in great field position. A few plays later, Watson found Caruso for the tying TD.

About midway though the fourth, Griffin made his 2nd mistake. He was baited into a throw by the outside linebacker O'Brien Schofield, who leaked into his zone responsibility late by design. The linebacker was able to snatch the throw and endure a rather nasty hit from Caulder to hold on to the ball.

The Bengals, though, could not put the ball in the end zone. Keithen Lett pressured Watson into a bad throw, but then had to be carted off the field. Javia General came in, and the big run stopping end started making plays against the pass. His first play, he found Watson rolling his way after Tevin Ash came around his edge. General was about to grasp the elusive Watson and bring him down.

That lead to a 3rd and long where a linebacker blitz forced a quick through, and Shyquawn Johnson prevented the WR from grabbing the first down. The FG was good, and the Bengals took a 27-24 lead.

With just over 2 minutes left, Griffin threw his 3rd INT of the game. He tried to hit De'Aarius Bumpers going across on an in route, but Mike Mitchell, a former Raider, read Griffin and picked off the pass, his 2nd INT of the game.

The only silver lining was that the Bengals were backed up as the pick game in the red zone, so the Bengals simply did three runs and punted. That burned the Raiders' timeouts, but also left 1:35 on the clock.

Chappelle made up for his earlier miscue with another good punt return, this one coming in at 21 yards.

The Raiders used the run game to throw the Bengals off balance. Caulder found some room after being contained most of the game, and Ray ripped off a long run as well. Griffin got his legs in the act by picking up 11 to convert a 1st down and got out of bounds.

Raiders in the red zone with time running down. Griffin got his team up to the line and started the play. He shifted to his right and saw Moore uncovering on a slant. Griffin bought some time and zipped the pass in there to Moore. The Bengals had brought pressure and were looking run, making it a bit easier for Moore to find his way through the coverage. The catch was just Moore's 3rd, but his 2nd TD on the day.

The Bengals had all their timeouts and Watson picked up a couple first downs to keep the game in doubt. However, General would come through with his second sack - a strip sack, but the Bengals recovered. Still, time was really against them, and now down and distance was as well.

Next play saw a blitz come in and the pressure caused Watson to force a throw. Peterson picked off his third pass of the game to seal the Raiders' win.

In all, the Raiders snatched 5 interceptions. K'Twon Wilcox got one and Brandon Madison did as well. Wilcox and Maeweather both had 12 tackles (and, once again, the LOLB barely made a dent on the stat sheet).

"This wasn't the prettiest game on either side of the ball, but a win is a win, and you take them any time you get one in the NFL, " Peterson spoke after the game.

While true - the same disturbing trend continues. Too many giveaways and another game getting beat significantly in the time of possession battle.

Is there any interest in this franchise? Had a couple people ask about it in my Rays franchise.

I still have this franchise, so I can pick it up if there is/would be interest in it even with M25 out.

Re: Rebuilding the Fear - Oakland Raiders M13 CCM

I'll run a week and see how much interest there is. The lack of in-game saving really sucks (I can start a game in The Show and pick it up later - Madden...not so much) - and it usually takes 2-4 hrs to do an update (1-2 hrs for the game, maybe 1/2 hr for the midweek news, and then the postgame writeup).

I'll try to get to it late tonight (like 2-3 AM, literally), and hopefully I don't fall asleep.

                Week 4 - Midweek News

                No NCAA Football News

                NFL News:

WR Jamal Bonner of the Jaguars turns down a contract extension offer.

Jags coach Chan Gailey won his 100th game last week.

WR Calvin Johnson is trying to make a run at Jerry Rice's all-time receptions record.

Falcons will get Dominic King back on the field this week.

The Cardinals and LB Asa Davidson can't come to terms on an extension.

                Raiders News

The Raiders aren't exactly playing their best football, but are still 3-0 nonetheless. Concerns abound over the turnovers the team is committing as well as the time of possession being a sticking point. Still, the team has found ways to get the job done, though sometimes too close for comfort.

Another injury has struck the team as Keithen Lett will miss the next 5 weeks with a bicep injury. This puts half the starting defensive line on the shelf.

                Contract News:

WR Akia Green agreed to a 5-year extension worth $34 M.

                Roster News:

Patrick Peterson won AFC Defensive Player of the Week on the strength of his 3 picks last week.

The injury to Lett will let Julian Shade and Javia General vie for control of that position during Lett's absence. Reports are that Shade was seeing most of the snaps at practice this week.

Marcel Reece is expected to be the fullback this week after getting last week off.

                Notable Progression:

                Scouting News:

Ohio State DT Sani Tubbs gained praise in an early look by team scouts. "He seems like a very flexible and athletic interior lineman. He can mix up his pass rush technique and isn't shy about trying to get a good jump off the snap," a team scout commented. Scouts also noted that he knows how to use his size well.

Patrick Seaver may seem entrenched at center, but the team will be hard pressed to let Oregon C Tyler Clay go by the boards. He's a durable kid who's nasty when he comes to run blocking. "He loves to lean on his man in the trenches and just power him off the line of scrimmage, " a scout commented. He's not noted for his mobility, so he's strictly a fire out type of blocker and might struggle moving to pick up inside blitz, but he's still likely to be attractive for the run-loving Raiders.

                  Raiders Defense Takes Control
Defensive Slugfest Ensues as Raiders Slowly
Take Control and Shuts Down Browns, 33-13.

This game was a hard-hitting affair throughout, and both QBs paid the price.

Early on, the Raiders offense could do nothing, largely because they could not protect RG3 if their lives depended on it. The Raiders QB took six sacks and had no time to throw on several of his passes. He completed just around 30% of his passes, but did avoid throwing an interception and managed over 200 yards.

Caulder couldn't do much of anything either, except fumble. The Browns linebackers were all over the run game for the most part. Only a few DeRay Ray runs and the legs of Griffin gained yards on the ground. Caulder did punch in the only offensive TD on the day for the Raiders.

But the Browns had the first TD of the game. Michael Pfeifer found Trent Richardson near the goal line in the first quarter for a score.

The Raiders could only match with a FG and the score was 7-3 after one.

The Raiders managed a couple red zone trips but could not turn them into touchdowns. Still, the Raiders had the lead 9-7, which was the score at the half.

Then the Browns defense struck again. Caulder took the hand off and tried the left side of the line. However, Dionte Tyson was tracking Caulder and hit him squarely before the running back could get going. The ball came out and Kuechly scooped it up. He took it 27 yards for a defensive touchdown and the lead. The Raiders held on the ensuing 2-pt conversion attempt so the score was 13-7, Browns.

That would be the score after three. The Raiders defense was clamping down on the Browns attack, and they did nothing at all. The Raiders offense wasn't doing much better, but without the mistakes, the Browns could not get field position. That was good enough, Lyle hoped.

It was. Griffin got the Raiders offense moving enough to get down to the goal line. He looked to Akia Green for big plays as Denarius Moore was knocked out of the game early. Green came up big with a catch on a post route that took him down inside the 5. Caulder would punch it in from the 2 yard line three plays later.

Then the Raiders defense asserted itself. Pfeifer found himself on the receiving end of a constant barrage. Lyle used some blitzes, but the patchwork defensive line did most of the work while the Raiders played a shell coverage.

The first defensive blow was from rookie DT Maka Lafontant. He pushed his way towards the Browns QB and knocked the ball out of his hand. Shyquawn Johnson slipped the ball from under the pile and trotted the five yards that stood between him and pay dirt for a 23-13 Raiders lead.

The Raiders then stopped the Browns on a fourth down attempt. The offense played conservative and set up Vinopal for a 35 yard FG attempt...and he missed it. The miss kept the Browns with some hope as the game was still a FG plus a TD lead.

Pfeifer was still under siege, however, and another failed fourth down conversion was the result. Pfeifer was unable to do anything or find any targets. He ended up taking five sacks himself and got the same treatment Griffin did in the first half.

After this failed 4th down by the Browns, the Raiders again played conservative, and this time Vinopal made the FG from nearly the same spot on the field...barely. He was able to draw the ball inside the left upright for the 3 points.

The Browns' last gasp was snuffed out by J.J. Smoke. Desperate, Pfeifer forced a sideline pass. Smoke was ready and displayed his ball skills. He snatched the ball and scampered in for the second defensive TD on the day. This was the back breaker, and the score was a 33-13 final, capping off a 24-point rally by the Raiders in the 4th quarter.

"That's the Raiders defense for you. They usually keep the team in the game, hang around, and just wait for mistakes. This time, it took until the fourth quarter, but Lyle found the weaknesses and his players stepped up to get two key turnovers and score with them, " Mike Hill commented.

The Raiders improve to 4-0 at the season's quarter point, and perhaps played their best defensive game of football so far this season.

Notes: The J.J. Smoke interception was the only time he was thrown at all game...You are not seeing double, both teams have a player named "Dylan Litchfield"...

I just read the whole series over the past week. Love it. Though I wouldn't mind if you started a whole new one in M25.

                          Is the Window Closing?

The Raiders are up to their ears in a players that need new contracts, and many of them are key contributors. Here's the breakdown:

                          Scout OVR in ( ) - Raiders Cap Room: $17.4 M

                          • SS Tyvon Branch (95) - the veteran safety is up for another new deal. He was seen as a key member of the secondary for his nose for the ball. However, can the Raiders afford him in his waning years? Asking: 5 yrs/$11 M per year.
                          • MLB Jake Olsen (89) - He's the odd man out after not quite living up to his potential and now with K'Twon Wilcox doing well, Mr. Olsen might find himself looking for work this offseason. Asking: 5 yrs/$5.5 M per year.
                          • CB Shaquille Carillon (82) - Not the most critical member of the defensive corps, but he's also never really disappointed coaches or his teammates. But the Raiders may not be able to afford his useful depth. Asking: 4 yrs/$3.3 M per year.
                          • OLB/DE Tevin Ash (86) - The Raiders might need to revisit trade options for Ash as the team might otherwise need to let him go. Teams are very interested in Ash, and he's coming off his best season of his career. Now might be the time to sell high and save the cash. Asking: 5 yrs/$4.95 M per year.
                          • HB Julio Caulder (85) - He might be the most likely to sign as the team loves their hard-nosed power back. After all, backs have come and gone, all seeking to oust Caulder, but nary a one has succeeded. DeRay Ray is a stud, but there's room for a bruiser in this backfield as well. Asking: 5 yrs/$4.4 M per year.
                          • LT Zac Foster (85) - The Raiders were hoping he would emerge as the LT the team can build the line around. So far, that hasn't happened, but he's still got upside. Is it worth the price? Asking: 4 years/$4.01 M per year.
                          • FS Lamel Seawood (82) - Lamel might find himself in a good spot. With Branch also up for a contract, the team might go with Lamel and place him at SS to pair him with fellow slugger Shyquawn Johnson. Asking: 4 years/$4.4 M per year.
                          • CB Lorenzo Hopkins (82) - Perhaps the most disappointing player on this list, Hopkins was seen as the next strong CB for the team. However, his performance and development have not been great. Then J.J. Smoke and other prospects arrived. Probably the least likely to be signed. Asking: 4 years/$3.3 M per year.
                          • QB Danny Martens (83) - Last, but not least, is probably the player causing the most debate. Danny Martens has been up and down, holds a ton of potential, is still young, and hardly the worst QB this team has featured (that is a tie between Carson Palmer and Kip "Rickety" Ricketts). Still, RG3 figures to be around a while, and QBs could be picked up or drafted - just as Martens is a former 5th round pick. But the Raiders love his deep ball, even if he's a bit erratic otherwise. Asking: 5 years/$6.6 M per year.

With only $17 M in cap room, decisions will have to be made, none of them really pleasant (except perhaps Hopkins). The team also has to keep an eye out to free agency, not wanting to miss the chance for an impact signing there. The Raiders might be in for a bit of a shuffling period in the midst of having to deal with high expectations.

                            Week 5 - Midweek News

                            NCAA Football News:

Center Tyler Clay out of Oregon is making a name for himself with his leading the way for his team's power run attack.

                            NFL News:

Packers failed to sign HB Jamel Ramsey to a new contract extension.

The Bears can't reach an agreement with DL Andre Jackson.

The Broncos and HB Mikel Leshoure broke off talks this week on a new extension.

The Jets have shocked the league in the early going, starting out at 4-0.

The Jaguars are in good early position after starting 4-0.

Jets WR Mohammed Massaquoi caught a trio of TDs as his Jets steamrolled to a 36-3 victory.

Redskins HB Marshawn Lynch is 8th all-time in rushing yardage.

The Cowboys will lose WR Eddie Royal for some weeks due to injury.

                            Raiders News

The Raiders are out to a 4-0 start, but the Broncos are again right behind at 3-1. The Chiefs and Chargers are both 2-2, so the AFC West might be a hotly contested division this year. The Raiders will need to keep the momentum going.

Raiders' Next Game: Raiders (4-0) @ Steelers (2-2)

The Raiders add Denarius Moore to the ranks of the injured as he will be absent for 3 weeks.

                            Transaction News:

There have been reports of the Raiders engaging in talks about Tevin Ash, but Lyle is resistant to the idea, especially now with the defensive line not at full strength. No comment from the Raiders or any teams rumored to be in talks about the pass rusher.

                            Roster News:

Moore's injury is going to increase the burden on two inexperienced wide outs: De'Aarius Bumpers and Sam Jackson. Lyle has mentioned that Jackson is likely to start alongside Akia Green, due to Jackson's big play ability. Bumpers works better in the slot according to the Raiders head coach. Armond Chappelle may be asked to contribute to the offense as well.

Julian Shade and Tevin Ash are expected to swap ends on the line. Ash has experience playing on the weak side of the defense from his games as ROLB. In addition, Shade looked very uncomfortable there last week. A switch is hoped to get both of them going.

Perhaps it's the Maeweather effect, but James Hazzard hasn't done much. Granted, Maeweather and Wilcox have been all over the field in the early going.

                            Notable Progression:

                            FS Shyquawn Johnson

                            PRC: 73 to 74

                            CB J.J. Smoke
                            RET: 67 to 69

                            PAC: 74 to 75
