The Kardiac Kids and The Return of Brian Sipe (Browns M13)

    [CENTER]

Berea, OH - It didn’t take long for Flying J owner Jimmy Haslam to put his mark on the Cleveland Browns. Just three days after coming to terms with Randy Lerner, Haslam cleaned house sending, Holmgren, Heckert and Shurmur packing.

Knowing the history of the franchise and that the rabid fan base could no longer tolerate a perennial loser, Haslam looked to that storied history to try to spark something along the grim shores of Lake Erie.

After meeting with new team President, Jim Brown, they decided to go with a coach who had once before been the heart and soul of the city of Cleveland, former quarterback Brian Sipe.

Sipe, the leader of the Kardiac Kids during the 1980 season said that the team this season is very similar to those Browns under Sam Rutigliano, "I think we were probably the most focused team in the NFL because there's no way you can look at our depth chart and conclude that we were one of the most talented teams in the NFL. We realized that, when an opportunity was there, we could execute. Everybody just expected that, when it was their turn, they'd get it done. Hopefully we can replicate that this season."

During the press conference Sipe went on to say that he believes this young team can be competitive and he hopes that from this year forward he can give the city of Cleveland something to be proud of as well as restore the hated rivalry against that team from Western Pennsylvania. All while trying to avoid any heart wrenching losses such as Red Right 88, The Fumble or the Drive.

    -----

Brian Sipe had been the Quarterbacks Coach at his alma mater, San Diego State for the past 3 years. He played 125 games for the Browns from ‘74 to ‘83 throwing for 23,713 yds (2nd in team history), 154 TDs (2nd in team history). He was also the 1980 NFL Most Valuable Player (337/554, 4132 yds, 30 TD, 14 INT).

Parting Ways: WR Mohamed Massaquoi was released today from the Browns. Team quoted as “wanting to go in a different direction.”

Browns Sign A. Smith: He wasn’t the free agent at the top of everybody’s list but the Browns pursued Alphonso Smith in earnest. He’ll come to Cleveland on a 1-year deal worth $1.0 million.

Starting Fresh: Plenty of teams had their eye on David Johnson, but he’ll make his new home in Cleveland after signing a 1-year $910k contract.

Rookies Step Up for Home Opener

CLEVELAND, OH - Despite being the youngest team in the league the Cleveland Browns (1-0) used all of their young weapons to clip Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles (0-1).

Trent Richardson capped off the Browns opening drive with his first career rushing touchdown from 17 yards out; he finished with 122 yards rushing on 23 carries and that lone touchdown.

Then Brandon Weeden found a familiar target in college teammate Josh Cooper from 7 yards out to jump out to an early 14 to nothing lead.

“All through training camp we were working Coop (Josh Cooper) into certain formations, especially in third down situations to give Brandon a familiar target that he has chemistry with,” said coach Brian Sipe, “hopefully they both continue to grow and Coop will be our go to 3rd down receiver.”

The untested offense was given breathing room by a stellar defensive performance that allowed only six points in the 1st half.

“We knew limiting them to big plays would help,” said Joe Haden, “and we also did a good job making Vick one dimensional, forcing him to check down to tight ends and backs.”

Cleveland was also given a break as Philadelphia’s big playmaker, Desean Jackson, was knocked out early in the 3rd quarter with a dislocated elbow. He is expected to miss the next three weeks.

Next up for the Browns is a short trip south to Cincinnati to take on divisional foe, the Bengals (1-0).

            Dalton Foils Late Browns Comeback

Cincinnati, OH - After losing Nick Collins to injury in the first half, Andy Dalton picked apart the Cleveland secondary up until the very last second.

Collins was hurt after intercepting Dalton in the endzone with 3 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter. Early indications are that Collins tweaked his knee when he was tackled by AJ Green.

Sputtering in the first half Brandon Weeden went on to start the second half by completing 8 passes in a row, including a 52 yard touchdown pass to Benjamin Watson to make the score 13 to 17 Bengals.

A Mike Nugent field goal had the Browns down seven with just two minutes remaining where the Browns faced a 4th and goal from the Bengals 1-yard line but they could not convert.

The Cleveland defense held strong and forced a Bengals punt, where 5 plays later Weeden hooked up with Watson again on a 21-yard touchdown pass with :33 seconds remaining to tie the game at 20.

The :33 seconds though proved to be too much time as Dalton was able to connect with Green on a 33 yard pass play with :09 seconds remaining to put Mike Nugent into position to make the 48-yard game winning field goal; shades of their last meeting in 2011.

The Browns will return home next week to face the visiting Buffalo Bills (1-1) as they try to inch back over the .500 mark.

              News:

              R. Griffin III Nails 158.3 - Sharpshooter Robert Griffin III was flawless in a win over the Rams. Notching perfect passer rating of 158.3
Crossing the Line - There was no stopping Ahmad Bradshaw as his 3 TD runs led to a 48-20 win over the Buccaneers
You Da Man - Drew Brees was a star in the Saints' 26-23 win over the Panthers.
One To Remember - Ben Rothelisberger was near-perfect with a 144.9 passer rating against the Jets this week.
Always Ready - Randy Moss has made more than a fair share of cornerbacks look silly en route to racking up the 4th most receiving yards in NFL History
Michael Turner Lost for a Couple Weeks - Injuries are an opponent you can't beat, so Michael Turner lost this week in a one-sided matchup. He'll be able to return in a couple weeks.

              Draft Stories:

Martinez Shines - Indiana CB Angel Martinez climibng draft boards after two INT game.
Scott Wright (@ScottWrightEA) "Very solid CB prospect out of Indiana by the name of Angel Martinez. Great hands for a d-back.

Star Is Born - Auburn QB Andrew Carvel the most dominant signal caller in the conference.
Scott Wright (@ScottWrightEA) "Auburn QB Andrew Carvel enters this season as the best QB prospect. He could've been a top 10 pick last year.

Pride of Furman - Furman TE Andrew Staley looking like an elite prospect
Scott Wright (@ScottWrightEA) "TE Andrew Staley wants to put Furman on the map. Some think he'll do it as a first-round pick

              Transactions:

Ravens Re-Sign R. Rice - The Ravens have decided to re-sign HB Ray Rice to a 6-year deal worth $48.0M

On Second Thought - FB Greg Jones and the Jaguars may have depth issues after the player rejected a contract extension.

              Players of The Week:

You better recognize - Mathias Kiwanuka was a force of nature this week, to such an extent he was rewarded with NFC defensive player of the week honors.
Trey Wingo (@WingozEA) - No doubt abouit it, Mathias Kiwanuka is the NFC defensive player of the week

L Timmons Awarded After Big Game - it shouldn't come as a surprise to hear that Lawrence Timmons played well enough to earn AFC defensive player of the week award for week 2.
Trey Wingo (@WingozEA) - I'd say Lawrence Timmons is one of the main reasons I'm happy to be in the studio and not on the field in pads.

              R. Griffin II Caps off Memborable Week - This is not a typo Robert Griffin III is Week 2 NFC offensive player of the week
Trey Wingo (@WingozEA) - Of course Robert Griffin III was given NFC offensive player of the week, you see his numbers?
Donny moore (@Donny_moore) - Two things are certin this wk...1) RG3 is not playing like a rook 2) Somebody getting some Madden Ratings Love in the...
Chirs Mortensen (@MortReportEA) - Perfect passer rating only happens maybe once or twice a season. Well done by R. Griffin III. #Redskins
Mike Hill (@MikeHillEA) - Nobody's perfect right? Robert Griffin III just made his case otherwise. #Redskins.

Up UP and Away - Andrew Luck was a fantasy superstart his week and AFC offensive player of the week honors.
Skip Bayless (@SkipBaylessEA) Not enough people are talking about Andrew Luck this week #AFCPoW

A Partial ACL Tear for N. Collins - A relatively serious injury will sideline Nick Collins for at least several games, according to team officials.

To The Bitter End - There was plenty of talk about the Browns-Bengals matchup heading into the week and that talk was clearly warranted.

                Twitter

Robert Flores (@RoFloEA) - Thanks #Browns/#Bengals now we’ve got something to talk about for days.

Mark Schlereth (@MarkSchlerethEA) - Andy Dalton sliced and diced the Browns d. #Bengals

Skip Bayless (@SkipBaylessEA) - I’m sorry but there has to be more important things to talk about during a NFL season than an injury to N. Collins.

Re: The Kardiac Kids and The Return of Brian Sipe (Browns M13)

                  The Kardiac Kids Are Back

Cleveland, OH - Over 20 years since his MVP season, head coach Brian Sipe never thought he'd find himself in similar nail biting, hold-your-breath football games the Browns of 1980 were accustomed to. Boy was he wrong.

Two straight weeks, two straight games decided in the final seconds.

"I really hope we learn to win a game in the first 58 minutes soon; for my own health," said Sipe "but that being said I'm really happy with how this young team has come together. Of course these are always easier when the final score tips in your favor."

The Browns first stepped into the endzone when Oklahoma St. teammates Brandon Weeden and Josh Cooper hooked up for the second time in three weeks to make the score 10 to 3.

It wasn't until the second half that things got interesting when Stevie Johnson hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick to give Buffalo their first lead of the contest; 17 to 13.

Following a C.J. Spiller touchdown run that put the Bills up 24 to 20 the Browns failed to convert on a 4th and 6 from Buffalo's 46-yard line and turned the ball over on downs with 3 minutes and change remaining.

The Browns defense then came up big on 3rd and 10 at midfield stopping Spiller short of the first down marker and they also got some help from the officials as Buffalo was flagged for holding, which stopped the clock and preserved Cleveland’s final timeout.

After Daniel Sepulveda’s kick sailed into the endzone for a touchback, Weeden took the field with one more drive left in his back pocket.

"Up until that drive we weren't doing the best on third downs," said Weeden "But when we got into that huddle everyone knew our backs were against the wall and we weren't going to accept defeat."

Eight plays later Weeden found rookie Josh Gordon on a seam route for a 36-yard touchdown and a key divisional win on the road.

A short turnaround for Cleveland is up next as they travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens (1-2) and try to silence a franchise who think Art Modell was a flowers and candy kind of guy.

Richardson Runs Ravens Right Out of Baltimore

Baltimore, MD - Since returning in 1999 the Cleveland Browns have consistently been dominated by their former selves, the Baltimore Ravens. Thursday night in primetime was a different story and new head coach Brian Sipe and his young team had set out to make a statement.

"We are no longer the dormat of this division, we are here to compete," said Sipe who is now 3-1 as head coach.

But not everyone is pleased the way that Cleveland made that statement. With just under two minutes to play the Browns were driving and they showed know signs of just running out the clock. Instead Sipe kept Trent Richardson in the game to get his second rushing touchdown of the game and make the score 44 to 20.

"We were beat, plain and simple," said Ravens leader Ray Lewis "but to run up the score like that, I hope they know we still have another game later in the season. We are definitely not going to forget what they did tonight."

What they did Thursday night was get a key divisional win on the road on the legs of Richardson who went for 224 yards on 25 carries, including a 75-yard TD scamper that put the Browns ahead for good late in the 1st quarter.

The touchdown was set-up by a thundering hit from D'Qwell Jackson on Jacoby Jones that jarred the ball lose, stopping a Ravens potential go-ahead drive. Their offense never quite recovered, especially when the typically stout defense had no answer for the Browns rushing attack.

Up next for Cleveland is a trip to the Big Apple and a match-up with the defending Super Bowl champs.

For some reason Injuries from other teams disappeared this week? As many of you know there are a ton of these oddities throughout the Careers. Such as the season leaders in statistics. Sometimes people won't show up or for instance in mine, after week 1 Jonathan Vilma had 167 tackles already. I also stopped posting the twitter feed. It made things a little more time consuming, plus at this point we've all seen every possible tweet in the game, so they get repetitive.

Bad Injury for Smith - The Browns want to have Alphonso Smith on that field, but they also believe they have the depth to absorb the loss.

Returnign Home With a Loss - The Browns fell to the Giants 44-35.
