Big Week Upcoming for Mountain Goats

    2013-08-16_04.16.04.jpg

Blue Mountain State will be heading to California this weekend for a pivotal early season challenge versus the University of Central San Francisco. The Gold Rush of UCSF are ranked #16 in the nation and have never played Blue Mountain State. The following are the key matchups the Goats must control in order to be successful versus the Gold Rush:

BMS running backs versus 97 Ovr. SS Scott Goldberg: The stable of Goats running backs will be in need of their best game of the season against UCSF. The Gold Rush are extremely physical and stout against the run so the Goats will need Craig Shilo to continue to earn the hard yards between the tackles as he did versus Notre Dame. The catalyst of the Gold Rush hardnosed defense is safety Scott Goldberg. Goldberg, a preseason second team All-American is in his third season as the Gold Rush starting strong safety and has led his team in tackles each of the last two seasons. Goldberg has only 5 tackles so far this season.

BMS Offensive Coordinator Marty Daniels is shown here, preparing offensive plays for the upcoming regular season game, on the road, at #16 UCSF

Thad Castle versus 94 Ovr. Chris Lemon: Thad Castle will be once again charged with the responsibility of holding the opposition’s number one running back in check. Castle leads the Goats in total tackles with 16 and has been steady against the run and pass this season. The Gold Rush have a group of backs to which they give the ball, chief among them being Chris Lemon. Lemon is experiencing his 2nd season as a starter and leads the team with 468 yards rushing and four rushing touchdowns and is also fifth on the team with eight receptions. A well rounded back like Lemon is pivotal to the success of the Gold Rush's offense as he gets many touches. All of Castle’s skill will be tested by an all-around back but if he can shut down Lemon he can help make the 'Rush one dimensional and therefore hurt their offenses ability to make plays.

Pierre Noble versus 94 Ovr. Eric Thompson: Blue Mountain State’s rushing defensive tackle Pierre Noble is going to need a big game versus the Gold Rush and will be the key to shutting down 'Rush quarterback Eric Thompson. Noble has 15 tackles and 3.5 quarterback sacks so far this season and will need to get to Thompson when he drops back to pass as well as contain the quarterback when he scrambles and on designed runs. Thompson has thrown 12 touchdowns and 2 interceptions this season and is known as the best pure passing quarterback in conference.

UCSF SHOWS BLUE MOUNTAIN STATE WHO'S BOSS

Tough UCSF defense quiets Blue Mountain State

Two weeks in a row, Blue Mountain State found themselves on the road. Unlike last week at DCU, the Goats dug a hole in the first half that was too deep to crawl out of and UCSF put BMS in their place.

          2013-08-16_04.11.51.jpg
This photo says it all. BMS Freshman kicker and punter, Harmon Tedesco shows his displeasure with his offense's performance

From the first passing passing play of the game for Blue Mountain State, then-ranked #16, UCSF showed they would be the ones handling the contest at home. On third down, after two unsuccessful runs, on the opening drive of the game, Alex Moran threw his first of four interceptions. This one would be the most costly, as it was returned for a touchdown. So, with less than two minutes taken off the game clock, UCSF already lead 7-0.

Those were the only points scored by either team in the first quarter as the Blue Mountain State defense was up to the challenge against one of the nation's top offenses. In the second quarter, however, UCSF would get it's offense going a little when the Gold Rush's star running back, Lemon, took a touchdown in to the end zone from around 20 yards out. That made the score 14-0, UCSF.

On the following BMS possession, the Goats put together their first solid drive of the game but it stalled on the goal line after 3 straight run plays up the gut that failed to get them in to the end zone. The BMS kicker, Harmon Tedesco easily put through a 21 yard field goal to bring the Goats within 11.

That margin wouldn't hold for long as with 2:22 left in the half, the UCSF stud QB, Thompson found one of his favorite targets, D. Sims for a 49 yard passing touchdown to send UCSF in to halftime leading 21-3.

The start of the second half saw the UCSF Gold Rush get the half's opening kick. Their drive resulted in a field goal, putting them ahead 24-3. Those three points were the only points scored during the 3rd quarter and Blue Mountain State entered the 4th quarter down plenty.

Early in the 4th quarter, Alex Moran found Freshman WR Brent Mayes for a 21 yard strike. The touchdown was the only offensive touchdown the Goats would score all day. UCSF would answer that score quickly with another field goal and with 3 minutes left to play, UCSF lead BMS 27-10.

Coach Massey had instructed his defense to start trying for strips of the ball in the 4th quarter and with time winding down it paid off. Sophomore LE Tony Lundy stripped a Lemon handoff and took it to the house, leaving Blue Mountain State down ten points, the margin they would eventually lose by.

                      Blue Mountain State FOOTBALL:
                      What we saw against UCSF

                      2013-08-16_04.09.07.jpg
Freshman quarterback Alex Moran was forced to look like a freshman for the first time all year against a ball-hawking UCSF defense

In the year’s worst performance, the University of Central San Francisco showed they were for real as five critical Mountain Goat errors enabled a 27-17 UCSF victory. Since the bowl game against Michigan several years ago, the Blue Mountain State program and team had honored the first rule of winning college football games: DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF. While the Goats had not been perfect, they had been a smart football team and forced the opponent to make the first and most costly mistake. Not against UCSF. And, while football games have random occurences and odd bounces of balls, occasionally the game is ruthlessly efficient, exacting a big price proportionate to the fatality of the error. Like against UCSF.

This Blue Mountain State team is not the same team team in years past. But it shares things with teams from the past. BMS has the quickness, athleticism and explosiveness to overcome a deficit in errors and mistakes. If they cut down the mistakes, they can win any game played before Thanksgiving weekend. If they make more mistakes than the opponent then they are in peril.

Wide receivers – Jeff Dortch and Tony Waller are stars, Brent Mayes is growing before our eyes, and James Fraser is on some kind of upward trajectory. Tyler Dunham and Kasey Miller are on the verge. This is no shock to us, but it looks like we’ll have the wide receiver corps who can pressure secondaries for now and for years to come.

Offensive Line - A slightly more talented unit than 2012 as the coaches are now comfortable running power over the right side as well as the left. They do need to work on pass protection although they have allowed less than ten sacks in four games in a pass heavy offense, and they are learning to adjust well to blitzes. Overland, DCU and FCS-E have and will provide an opportunity to develop some depth. I think the main reason that the offensive line hasn't been as good as their overalls would predict is because of coach Massey wanting to play all games on Heisman difficulty for the first time ever.

                      Go Goats!

Alex Moran throws 4 TDs as BMS moves to 2nd in the nation in points per game and a 4-1 record

Blue Mountain State welcomed an enormous group of high school recruits to campus this week to show the young men all about Blue Mountain State. They weren't disappointed. Not one player had worse than an A- experience. BMS has a blowout victory and free beer and "sloots" provided by The Goat House to thank for that. A downpour of rain wouldn't halt the activities that took place on the campus of Blue Mountain State, that's for sure.

The game got started with Blue Mountain State returning the kick and traveling down the field for a 12 play drive, resulting in a 34 yard field goal by freshman kicker Harmon Tedesco. After the ensuing kickoff, the very first play of the game for the Arizona Tech offense was intercepted by a hungry Mountain Goat secondary, which set up the Goats for an easy Moran to Dortch 9 yard touchdown. Below is the highlight of Moran's first of four touchdowns of the evening.

At the end of the first quarter, Blue Mountain State lead their NEW C-USA conference foe 10-0.

Blue Mountain State Wide Reciever Tony Waller had a 2nd quarter to remember, catching two 40+ yard bombs from Alex Moran. The first touchdown of the 2nd quarter, a 40 yard TD pass to Waller put the Goats up 17-0 early in the quarter. Take a look at the highlight.

                            https://<iframe width="640" height="...reen></iframe>

The second of Waller's touchdown catches in the 2nd quarter put BMS up 24-0 and was an impressive 44 yard play. Here's the replay of the 44 yard touchdown:

                            https://<iframe width="640" height="...reen></iframe>

After freshman Running Back Craig Shilo punched in a 2 yard rush following a 97 yard drive, Blue Mountain State was up 31-0, and that was the score heading in to half time.

In the third quarter there was no scoring, but the fourth quarter saw Moran throw a touchdown to Kellen Chandler, and another field goal by Harmon Tedesco, this one from 46 yards out.

Final Score: 41-0, Blue Mountain State

Blue Mountain State vs Arizona Tech: 3 Things we Liked

As you can see, it's a hard life being the starting quarterback at Blue Mountain State, especially when you're winning

                              1. The play of the offensive line

We all know Alex Moran isn’t going to evade many pass rushes and Arizona Tech decided to come after him early and often throughout the contest. The Blue Mountain State offense line, however, rose to the occasion after a slow start and gave Moran a pocket to throw in all night long. The Arizona Tech Warriors did get their hands on a couple of passes at the line, but they didn’t sack Moran once.

In the second half there was a lot of room for the Mountain Goat running backs as well. The backs didn’t always find it, but it was there. They did have some very untimely penalties including a false start in the 4th by the center, Donnie, but when they were needed to give Moran time to pass, they answered the call.

                              2. The emergence of Kevin Carroll

Sometimes the recruiting services get it right when they label someone a 5-star prospect and it sure looks like they got it right with Kevin Carroll. After a few uneventful games to start his career, Carroll burst onto the scene and announced his presence to the college football world. The sophomore safety led the Goats with 6 tackles while picking up an interception. He should have gotten credit for a sack too but it was credited as a “team” sack on a second quarter rollout attempt on 3rd down.

Carroll was all over the field and was a primary reason the Goats gained a shut out over a NEW C-USA team like Arizona Tech. Carroll also broke up a pass on the night. Arizona Tech looked like they were specifically targeting him on some quick passes, but Carroll responded by flying to the ball like a heat syncing missile.

This kid is going to be a whole lot of fun to watch for the next few years.

                              3. The turnovers from the Blue Mountain State defense

The Blue Mountain State defense has been coming up with a couple big turnovers when they are needed this season, but not the same as they did a year ago. That changed a bit on Saturday night though when the Mountain Goats created three second half turnovers of the Warriors, including an interception and a couple fumble recoveries. Larry Summers made a heck of a play to force a fumble that led to one of Tony Waller's two touchdown grabs.

Blue Mountain State wouldn’t have beaten Texas or Michigan last year without creating turnovers and they will need to do more of what they did against Arizona Tech over the final few games of the season.
