    Out From The Smoke

Trio of top recruits sign with Blue Mountain State despite the school's recent legal issues

    CAM00373.jpg

Blue Mountain State has been in a lot of trouble lately, and that's no breaking news at this point, as the entire country has heard about the BMS drug bust by now. However, things just got a little better for the University and it's troubled football team. Coach Massey and the Mountain Goats secured hard commitments from three prospects last night, just days after the team was affected with a devastating black eye to the program.

Here's a look at your brand new Blue Mountain State commits:

    CAM00387.jpg

Down to his final two choices, strong safety Thomas Harris of La Mirada, Calif., chose Blue Mountain State over California and fellow NEW C-USA opponent, UCSF. The 6-foot tall, 215-pound Harris is a three-star prospect by Rivals.com, a national Internet recruiting service. He will bring a hard hitting attitude to the secondary, that will be needing as much attitude as possible heading in to next season. The secondary has been a focus point of Head Coach C. Massey during the year when recruiting. Harris will team up with 2 incoming CB's to provide youth to the team's biggest question mark going in to 2014.

    CAM00383.jpg

Marvin Ross of Lombard, Ill., chose the Mountain Goats over UCSF, Alabama and Syracuse, among others. The 6-4, 270-pound four-star guard visited over the weekend and committed soon after. We hope that the tragic party at The Goat House had no influence in his decision to come to Blue Mountain State, but at this point, it is a realistic possibility. Ross joins an already loaded stack of guards coming in with Massey's 2014 recruiting class.

    CAM00381.jpg

The real true prize of the weekend for Massey's Mountain Goats came in the form of Jason Harris, the nation's #2 rated ATH prospect. Coach C. Massey has only recruited two 5-star prospects since 2009, and now both of them will be on next year's Blue Mountain State squad. Massey's first 5-star recruit that he ever brought in on his own was Anthony Williams, who was originally recruited while coach Massey was the head coach at the University of Cincinnati. Williams is currently a starting linebacker for the Mountain Goats. Now, late in 2013, Massey has brought in his first 5-star prospect as coach at Blue Mountain State University. Harris, who stands 6-foot tall is projected as a corner as of right now. That would be absolutely huge news for the Massey and his Mountain Goats as corner has been the #1 concern for recruiting during this current season. He also has played safety, linebacker and wide-receiver in high school.

The signing of Jason Harris, along with Thomas Harris and Marvin Ross numb the pain a little of the Blue Mountain State faithful coming off such a terrible scene as the campus party just nights ago.

RUSTY MOUNTAIN GOATS ESCAPE OVERLAND IN FIRST GAME SINCE DRUG BUST

2-win Overland nearly takes down then ranked #23 Blue Mountain State

Aside from a few great recruits committing to the University recently, Blue Mountain State hasn't been the happiest campus as of late. Barred by a major drug bust, leading to 21 Blue Mountain State football players, the campus of Blue Mountain State University has been bustling with media members all week. The media nearly had another huge story to report on the campus, as Overland University mounted a late-game comeback to nearly knock off one of college football's traditionally finest programs.

The Mountain Goats of Blue Mountain State got in to the end zone on their second possession of the game on a 37 yard TD run by freshman HB Craig Shilo. Shilo had a monster day - his first in a while - going for 123 yards and 2 touchdowns. Here's a look at his first TD of the game, a 37 yarder:

        https://<iframe width="640" height="...reen></iframe>

The following drive, Overland running back Reggie Temple took a 4 yard carry in to the end zone to tie the ball game at 7. With 12 seconds left in the first quarter, the OU kicker, Rushing, nailed a 24 yard field go to give his visiting Overland Badgers the lead at the end of the first quarter.

With around 6 minutes left in the second quarter, BMS put together a quick 5 play, 30 yard drive and Craig Shilo found himself in the end zone again, this time off of a ten yard run, right up the middle. Here's a look:

        https://<iframe width="640" height="...reen></iframe>

Later in the second quarter, Blue Mountain State freshman phenom kicker Harmon Tedesco curved a field goal through the uprights for a 31 yard field goal from the left hash. With 3 seconds left in the first half, BMS QB Alex Moran found junior WR Tony Waller on a 49 yard scoring strike which put the BMS fans slightly at ease with a 24-10 halftime lead. In case you missed the fine passing play, we've provided it for you here:

"He just ran his route and got behind the defender..nothing fancy, but it got the job done!" - Blue Mountain State head coach Massey commented after the game

There was no scoring in the 3rd quarter, but it was an exciting 4th quarter for all viewers. Harmon Tedesco, the Blue Mountain State freshman kicker drilled a 41 yard field goal to put BMS ahead 27-10 early in the quarter, but Overland answered with a quick rushing touchdown bringing it to within ten. With 1:24 left in regulation, the Blue Mountain State defense was ripped to shreds on a perfect drive by the Badgers of Overland. That drive resulted in a 4 yard receiving touchdown by OU WR Spicer, bringing the score to within 3.

Overland failed at an onside kick attempt, and Craig Shilo and the Goats offense ran out the clock to preserve a close win and the BMS winning streak for the Mountain Goats who moved up to #20 in the national rankings after the game.

Final Score: 27-24, Blue Mountain State

        Post Game Stats
        Offense:
        Fr. QB: Alex Moran = 11-24, 177 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT
Fr. RB: Craig Shilo = 23 attempts, 123 yards, 2 TD

Blue Mountain State gets one-year bowl ban

          ESPN.com news services

BLUE MOUNTAIN -- Blue Mountain State players broke the rules and now they'll pay the price. On Saturday, it was announced that the Blue Mountain State football program will not be playing in a bowl game this season.

The NCAA hit Blue Mountain State with a one-year bowl ban and additional penalties for violations involving the 21 student athletes that were arrested in the infamous BMS drug bust that occurred on the Blue Mountain State campus a couple weeks ago.

"He's not going to appeal. He accepts the committee's decision. That's all there is to say," said Willie Johnson, an attorney for BMS head coach Massey.

When asked about his job status, Massey told The BMS Times that school president Thomas Hagger has been "very supportive."

"I come to work every day and do the best job I can," Massey told the paper. "The president makes that ultimate decision, and he's been very supportive of me."

The NCAA also issued a public reprimand and censure, put the Mountain Goats on probation through Dec. 22, 2014, and reduced football scholarships from 85 to 82 through the 2014-15 academic year.

Greg Sankey, associate commissioner of the Southeastern Conference and a committee member, said in a teleconference that the BMS drug bust was, "considered very serious and, frankly, very disappointing."

In light of the many problems in college athletics grabbing headlines these days, Sankey was asked if the NCAA was trying to send a message with the bowl ban against Blue Mountain State.

"I would not suggest that this is necessarily a new day," Sankey said. "But these penalties are significant and that's part of the committee's role in both finding violations and then assessing penalties."

Hagger said Tuesday night he hoped that remedies had been taken to avoid any further embarrassing scandals at the University. "The whole situation was a disaster. The bottom line to all of this is everyone is moving forward with this. I'm just glad it's behind us now."

2014 New Year’s Resolutions for Blue Mountain State Football

            Authors: Frank Vitovitch & redsrulenc

            BMS butts.jpg

As everyone kicks off their New Year with days full of college football, outdoor hockey, and resolution creation, we take a look at some New Year’s resolutions for the 2014 Blue Mountain State Mountain Goats as they work towards spending next year’s New Year’s Day preparing for more football instead of watching at home in trouble with the law and the NCAA over a drug bust.

            1. Beat UCSF

There is really no reason the Mountain Goats should have lost to the University of Central San Francisco this season. Obviously though, UCSF was as good a good football team as their undefeated record fully illustrates. Blue Mountain State can’t let that happen again next year when the Gold Rush face off against BMS. Please, just beat UCSF next year, as good as they are.

            2. No more off-season drama

There’s no point in rehashing all of the off the field drama Blue Mountain State experienced in 2013 – it’s been well documented everywhere. Hopefully the drama ends this off-season. There are bound to be some transfers and things of that nature – that’s just normal. I for one will be very happy, however, if I don’t have to hear words like “catfishing”, “poor academic judgement”, and “looking to get out of his letter of intent” this year. Also, we hope coach Massey gets a-hold of his boys and keeps drugs out of their hands..

            3. Fix kick return and coverage teams

The one area that has perplexed me the most with Blue Mountain State under C. Massey has been the kick coverage and return units. This should be an area that can be fixed quickly and can make a huge impact on games. The last few years the only return unit that is above average is the kick and punt return team. Kick coverage and punt coverage on the other hand all remain average. Considering all of the improvements coach Massey has delivered to BMS, it’s beyond surprising at this point that special teams are just okay. Maybe I'm being too picky, but if there's any small weaknesses, it can be that the defense occasionally breaks after bending too much, and that the return coverage teams can allow big return yard numbers.

Massey has to find a way to get more production from both coverage units in 2014 to help out both his defense and offense. They aren't bad, being ranked 42nd in the nation in return yards allowed between punt and kickoff return units, but it'd be nice to see them crack the top 30 at least.

                      CLOSE CALL

Mountain Goats finish regular season on 8 game winning streak in thrilling fashion

                      CAM00768.jpg
A little rain isn't going to stop Junior WR Jeff Dortch from showing off his future NFL hand(s)

The Blue Mountain State community knew that in order to get a chance to win conference, they'd have to go through a tough Tuscaloosa team. The pressure didn't cost the #20 Mountain Goats a loss, as BMS capped off their regular season win total at 11. Read more to see how the Mountain Goats got the job done this time.

Blue Mountain State won the toss and elected to kick, a favorite strategy of BMS head coach Massey. Tuscaloosa University has shown a high powered offense all year and Massey knew his defense had it's work cut out for them. Tuscaloosa opened up the scoring on their opening drive on a 45 yard field goal. Blue Mountain State, not to be outdone, answered back with a 45-yarder of their own to tie things up at 3, and that was the last score of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Tuscaloosa QB Luke Greco became his school's all-time TD pass leader with his 28th of the season, a 30 yard pass to put his Bulls ahead by 7. In similar score answering fashion as the first quarter, Blue Mountain State freshman slinger Alex Moran orchestrated a 9 play drive on 5 of 5 passing, ending on THIS 12 yard touchdown pass to Dortch:

                      https://<iframe width="854" height="...reen></iframe>

The throw caught the Tuscaloosa defender off guard as the ball barely made it past the surprised corner.

With less than two minutes left in the first half, Blue Mountain State signal-caller Alex Moran threw his 28th touchdown pass of the season, a 13 yard pass to freshman Wide Receiver James Fraser. Here' a look at the Fraser TD catch, in case you missed it yesterday:

                      https://<iframe width="854" height="...reen></iframe>

Late in the second quarter, the Mountain Goat defense forced a quick 3-and-out and got the ball back with 12 seconds left and no where near field goal range, offensive Juggernaut coach Marty Daniels called for a simple hand-off to RB Craig Shilo, but coach Massey wanted points. Massey got his wish as he instructed his QB, Moran, to "throw it up deep". The deep pass went for 48 yards, setting up a 37 yard FG from Groza Award winner hopeful, Harmon Tedesco as time expired in the half.

The Mountain Goats lead at the half 20-10.

As good as Alex Moran played in the first half, the man controlling his throwing direction with the ps3 controller seemed dead-set on giving the game away in the 2nd half. The first possession of the 2nd half for BMS ended in a pick six touchdown for Tuscaloosa. Moran and Massey agreed that neither saw the defender following Tony Waller stride for stride. The very next Blue Mountain State possession was another interception. "It was my fault", commented coach Massey after the game. "I told him to force that second pass in there. We're extremely lucky that second one didn't cost us too much."

Luckily for the Mountain Goats, 2 plays later Tuscaloosa gave it right back to Blue Mountain State via an interception. The interception resulted in a 34 yard field goal by freshman sensation, #1, Harmon Tedesco.

The final drive of the 3rd quarter for Tuscaloosa gave themselves the lead. Or should we say, a major coaching mistake by coach Massey gave Tuscaloosa the lead. Not feeling comfortable with the defensive coordinator Jon Jon Hendricks' play call, Massey tried to call an audible at the last second, leaving a wide open TU WR, Hopkins, cutting across the middle for a long pitch and catch play resulting in a touchdown. "I certainly didn't make all the right calls today. I'm lucky we still won. I'll have to bring my A+ game to the C-USA championship game."

At the end of the 3rd quarter, the Tuscaloosa Bulls lead the Mountain Goats by one, 24-23.

                      CAM00783.jpg
Thad Castle is about to rock your world, bro beans

Early on in the 4th quarter, BMS kicker Harmon Tedesco hammered a 44 yard field goal which gave BMS the lead, and they never looked back. That field goal would be the final score of the game for either team, as the defenses forced punts for the remained of the game.

Final Score: 26-24, Blue Mountain State

                      Post Game Stats
                      Offense:
                      Fr. QB: Alex Moran = 24-42, 279 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
Fr. RB: Craig Shilo = 13 attempts, 49 yards,
Jr. (RS) WR: Tony Waller = 5 catches, 98 yards
                      Defense/Special Teams:
Fr. LB: Thad Castle = 8 tackles (lead team), 3 tackles for loss, 1 sack
Fr. K: Harmon Tedesco = 4-4 kicking, long of 45

3 prospects signed with Blue Mountain State after the win. We'll have a full report on the signings coming up soon.

Blue Mountain State Adds Another Trio of Talented Prospects

                        CAM00787.jpg

-- Blue Mountain State University head coach C. Massey announced Thursday (Jan. 16) the signing of Justin Myers (Sherry, Tx./Union Grove), Anthony Bryant (Tinley Park, LA./Victor J. Andrew) and B. Zeigler (Chimmy, MI./Trinity) to National Letters of Intent.

"I am really excited about this class," Massey said. "I think it is an outstanding class that will really help our program. We had a great recruiting process with each player. They are very athletic. This is one of our best classes we have signed. I hope they bring us championships because that is what they are coming here for."

                        CAM00799.jpg

Myers, Massey's second 5 star recruit since joining Blue Mountain State and 3rd of his career, is a 6'0 athlete prospect who has all the tools to be a quarterback in the Blue Mountain State system. He won't challenge Alex Moran for a starting spot right away, but if Myers pans out, he could be solid if needed. C. Massey had this to say about his prized recruit: "Justin is the #5 athlete prospect coming out of high school this season and we are very glad to have him. Honestly, if we would have known from the begining that he'd be a quarterback, we probably would have paid him less attention, as we have our man at QB in Alex [Moran]. As it turns out, he has the tools to be a QB and we welcome him with welcome arms."

                        CAM00812.jpg

Anthony Bryant, who is a 5'11 4 star HB, will join Blue Mountain State's backfield after winning two state championships at Sherry High School. He led Sherry to the state championship this fall, marking the first title in school history. A three-time all-state and all-region selection, his power will be useful to compliment the quick and shifty backs that are already in place at Blue Mountain State. Massey had this to say about Bryant: "We knew we needed a fullback, and we think Bryant can carry that load with a little more time in the weight room. We saw on tape that can throw some excellent blocks, but these boys in the FBS are big and strong. I think we can build him up in to an excellent ball carrying fullback."

Zeigler, a former junior college standout tight end originally committed to his hometown school, Michigan, but as the season went on, Zeigler had a change of heart and decided Blue Mountain State was for him. "He's a big guy at 6'4, and tight end is a position we'll need depth at moving forward. I look forward to having him in my system and seeing him catch some balls from Mr. Alex Moran."

Sorry about the sideways pictures. I guess they were too big to stand upright.

                              CONFERENCE CHAMPS

                              BMS final moment.jpg

Behind Alex Moran's SIX touchdowns in the 2nd half, and a final second hailmary touchdown pass to send the game to overtime, Blue Mountain State completes biggest comeback in C-USA conference championship history, down 27-6 at halftime to arch rival, #2 in the polls, then-undefeated, UCSF

Let the party begin on the Blue Mountain State campus. They won't be playing for the national title, but now, neither will UCSF. The University of Central San Francisco beat the Mountain Goats by 3 early in the season, which ultimately shot down any chance that Blue Mountain State would play for a national title this season. Now, with UCSF undefeated and one win away from the national championship game, Blue Mountain State got it's revenge and knocked UCSF out of title contention.

This was no ordinary win for Blue Mountain State. Read more to find out.

As the Mountain Goat band belted out "We Are the Champions," Blue Mountain State players weren't thinking of an ending to an excellent 12 win season. They were celebrating a rebirth. As the headline from the commemorative newspaper many held proclaimed:CONFERENCE CHAMPS AGAIN!
                              Blue Mountain State is back.

The Gold Rush -- who had beaten their first 12 opponents in 2013 by an average margin of 42.3 points -- needed all 60 minutes and one drive of overtime to get beat. UCSF, the so-called team of destiny given their penchant for blowout victories, initially seemed as if they might win without drama. The Gold Rush raced to a 27-6 lead thanks largely to its unheralded defense -- which pressured and frazzled BMS freshman quarterback Alex Moran. If not for an insane, exciting second half that seemed to be a dream come true for Blue Mountain State, the Gold Rush may have easily run away with the championship crown of the conference.

Now that the Mountain Goats are back on top, they may stick around a while. After all, a certain quarterback will come back to campus for at least two more seasons. That certain quarterback, Alex Moran, passed for a Blue Mountain State record 60 attempts, completing just over half of those attempts, while amassing 536 yards, well over 400 of those in the 2nd half alone, while passing for another Blue Mountain State, and possible NCAA record, 6 touchdown passes in the second half.

                              CAM00877.jpg
Moran's stats speak for himself. 536 yards and 6 touchdowns in the C-USA Championship game

In the first half, it was ALL Central San Francisco. Blue Mountain State freshman kicker Harmon Tedesco was able to successfully make two field goals in the half, one from 26 yards out and one from 50. He was the only bright spot on the entire team in the first half. The offense looked bad and the defense looked even worse. The defense couldn't get off the field on third down, and the star QB of UCSF picked apart the BMS zone defense.

"When we realized the zone-coverage wasn't working at all, we knew we had to make a change at halftime, and when we did, that's when the ballgame changed around and we gained momentum", said BMS head coach C. Massey after the win.

That change for the Mountain Goats was on defense, as defensive coordinator Jon Jon Hendricks and head coach C. Massey teamed up and decided to try playing man-coverage against the tough UCSF offense. Boy did the game change around in a hurry.

Before one could blink an eye, Harmon Tedesco was booting a 40 yard field goal to make things 27-9, in favor of UCSF. After a short drive by UCSF, the ball was back in the hands of Alex Moran who found James Fraser in the front of endzone for a 9 yard touchdown, after a perfect 5-5 passing drive. 3 of the 5 passes on the drive went to WR Brent Mayes, who finished the season with 45 receptions. The score was 16-27 early in the 3rd quarter.

UCSF All-American running back Chris Lemon broke off a 75 yard TD run, his 3rd TD of the day, on the following possesion, and coach Massey thought all hope was lost at that point. "Things had been changing for the better for us, and then that happened. I thought [Chris] Lemon put an end to our comeback hopes when they went up 34-16".

UCSF added a 24 yard field goal to go up 37-16, but that score wouldn't last long as Moran would find Sophomore tight end J.T. Wall for a 64 yard catch and run, set up by a beautiful block by junior WR Tony Waller. The experts on ESPN called the 64 yard score the "turning point play of the game". That score would make things 23-37, with UCSF still holding a commanding lead as the 3rd quarter would end.

With #2 UCSF attempting to put together a drive against the suddenly focused man-coverage defense of the Mountain Goats, freshman transfer linebacker from Cincinnati, Anthony Williams intercepted a pass which, 30 seconds later, put Blue Mountain State in the endzone from a Moran pass in to the hands of fellow freshman, running back Craig Shilo. The TD pass to Shilo brought the game to within 7 points.

                              CAM00880.jpg
Freshman HB Craig Shilo looks in an 8 yard TD pass from Alex Moran to bring the game to within 7 points

4 punts were then exchanged between the two teams, when suddenly, with 2:51 left on the clock, coach Massey told Offensive Coordinator and assistant coach Marty Daniels that he wanted a deep bomb, so they ordered up and served the UCSF secondary a piping hot pepperoni and cheese touchdown. Bon Appe'tit! Tie game! 37-37! 60 yard touchdown pass from Moran to big-play man Tony Waller.

With around one minute left UCSF had the ball and were putting together a very nice drive. The drive was killing clock, and effectively moving the ball down the field. With exactly one minute on the clock, the UCSF offense faced a 3rd & 8, and scored a deflating 39 yard touchdown off of a perfectly placed pass that should have been knocked down by a BMS defender.

Blue Mountain State received the ball with around 50 seconds left from their own 26 yard line and due to poor offensive line play, BMS found themselves in a tough spot. On 4th and 17, Moran threw the most clutch pass of the day on a comeback route to Brent Mayes, who caught the ball about 4 yards short of the first down marker and picked up about 6 yards on the ground to give the Goats life with 30 seconds to play. Moran and Waller connected on a clutch 3rd down play to move the Mountain Goats in to field goal range, but a field goal would do no good at this point. After a couple deep heaves to the endzone, BMS found themselves with 3 seconds on the clock, 4th down. Here's Blue Mountain State radio announcer Kennith Kaniff's call of what happened next:

"So here it is, Blue Mountain State's season comes down to one pass. Moran is just going to have to throw it deep to one of his big play recievers and pray someone in white comes down with the football. Moran calls for the ball..drops back.. scans the field...looks right then left...Waller is one on one on the left...Moran heaves it from mid field...it's in the air...please, please....HE CAUGHT IT! HE CAUGHT! WALLER IN THE ENDZONE! HE CAUGHT IT! TOUCHDOWWWWWWNNNNNN! ONE ON ONE COVERAGE AND HE COMES DOWN WITH IT!! YESS!!!!! OHHHH YEAHHH BIG BOY!! AHHHH OHH ERRR!"

                              CAM00861.jpg
The final play, the moment of truth, the moment of glory, the hailmary pass

And with that, Harmon Tedesco put through the most nerve wracking extra point of his life to send it to overtime, 44-44.

In overtime, Blue Mountain State got the ball first, and 2 plays later Alex Moran found freshman wide receiver Kasey Miller for a 25 yard touchdown, Miller's only catch of the entire season. UCSF's overtime appearence didn't last long as Larry Summers out of the BMS secondary caught and interception to bring the thrilling C-USA Championship to an end.

Final Score: 51-44, Blue Mountain State

Full highlights and stats to come. For now, sit back and enjoy a cold one for the boys at Blue Mountain State University. The Conference USA Champions.
