Re: Unconquered.

WEEK ONE PREVIEW: FLORIDA STATE vs. PITTSBURGH
Finally, college football season is upon us. We've seen a full weekend of college football, and now, on Monday night, the Florida State Seminoles and Pittsburgh Panthers cap off the opening week of another year of college football.
Led by one of the nation's top defenses and veteran leadership on both sides of the ball, FSU worked their way to 12-2 record. After having their National Championship hopes bashed by a loss in Raleigh to NC State last October, the Seminoles went on to claim an ACC title and an Orange Bowl trophy. However, finishing the season ranked #8 and without a BCS Title was certainly a disappointment to the Garnet and Gold who entered last season as a serious contender to take home the crown.
This season, as shown by their #18 pre-season ranking, the Seminoles are receiving nowhere near the hype that was being thrown their way at this time last year. Part of that may be due to the departure of the aforementioned veteran leadership from players such as EJ Manuel, Bjoern Werner, Brandon Jenkins, and Xavier Rhodes, but also may come from ignorance on the part of sports writers.
Although the Seminoles did in fact lose some crucial pieces from last year's team, it's foolish to write off the Seminoles as a team entering a rebuilding season. Stepping into Manuel's role is a dark-horse Heisman Trophy candidate in Jameis Winston. On the defensive side of the ball, LaMarcus Joyner and Christian Jones, two perennial All-American elected to return for the senior seasons while former #1 overall recruit Mario Edwards Jr. makes his way into the starting lineup, taking the defensive end spot once occupied by Jenkins. 2012 may have been Florida State's most successful campaign in over five years, but Jimbo Fisher and the 'Noles won't want to stop at another 12 win season.
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh are in a completely different stage. Pitt has had six different head coaches since 2010. The Seminoles may be looking titles, but the Panthers are just looking for some kind of consistency. In his first season as head coach of Pitt, Paul Chyrst led the team to a 6-7 record, marking the Panthers' second consecutive season under .500. Now, as new members of the ACC, Pitt will see an upgrade in competition from their previous seasons in the Big East. Pitt bring over two of the conference's top defenders in Aaron Donald and Jason Hendricks, the questions mark don't surround the defense, Rather, it is the offense that is in question.
The Panthers have a top wide receiver in Devin Graham, but how they are going to get him the ball is no certainty. Pitt's starting quarterback this season is Tom Savage, who fittingly, is playing for the third team in his college career. Savage hasn't played in a college football game since November 2010 where he finished 6-12 for 76 yards in a loss to Syracuse. After playing for Rutgers, then Arizona, and now Pitt, Savage is in for a challenge when his Panthers face off against one of the top defenses in the country.
With a very good front seven and a superb secondary, the Seminoles shouldn't have too many problems trying to stop Savage and Graham, who will be Pitt's two biggest offensive threats. If Winston, James Wilder Jr., and Devonta Freeman can kick-start the Florida State offense and neutralize the dominance of Donald in the trences, the Panthers will be in for a long night on national television.
PREDICTION: Florida State 27-10 Pittsburgh
