WEEK ONE PREVIEW: FLORIDA STATE vs. PITTSBURGH
Finally, college football season is upon us. We've seen a full weekend of college football, and now, on Monday night, the Florida State Seminoles and Pittsburgh Panthers cap off the opening week of another year of college football.

Led by one of the nation's top defenses and veteran leadership on both sides of the ball, FSU worked their way to 12-2 record. After having their National Championship hopes bashed by a loss in Raleigh to NC State last October, the Seminoles went on to claim an ACC title and an Orange Bowl trophy. However, finishing the season ranked #8 and without a BCS Title was certainly a disappointment to the Garnet and Gold who entered last season as a serious contender to take home the crown.

This season, as shown by their #18 pre-season ranking, the Seminoles are receiving nowhere near the hype that was being thrown their way at this time last year. Part of that may be due to the departure of the aforementioned veteran leadership from players such as EJ Manuel, Bjoern Werner, Brandon Jenkins, and Xavier Rhodes, but also may come from ignorance on the part of sports writers.

Although the Seminoles did in fact lose some crucial pieces from last year's team, it's foolish to write off the Seminoles as a team entering a rebuilding season. Stepping into Manuel's role is a dark-horse Heisman Trophy candidate in Jameis Winston. On the defensive side of the ball, LaMarcus Joyner and Christian Jones, two perennial All-American elected to return for the senior seasons while former #1 overall recruit Mario Edwards Jr. makes his way into the starting lineup, taking the defensive end spot once occupied by Jenkins. 2012 may have been Florida State's most successful campaign in over five years, but Jimbo Fisher and the 'Noles won't want to stop at another 12 win season.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh are in a completely different stage. Pitt has had six different head coaches since 2010. The Seminoles may be looking titles, but the Panthers are just looking for some kind of consistency. In his first season as head coach of Pitt, Paul Chyrst led the team to a 6-7 record, marking the Panthers' second consecutive season under .500. Now, as new members of the ACC, Pitt will see an upgrade in competition from their previous seasons in the Big East. Pitt bring over two of the conference's top defenders in Aaron Donald and Jason Hendricks, the questions mark don't surround the defense, Rather, it is the offense that is in question.

The Panthers have a top wide receiver in Devin Graham, but how they are going to get him the ball is no certainty. Pitt's starting quarterback this season is Tom Savage, who fittingly, is playing for the third team in his college career. Savage hasn't played in a college football game since November 2010 where he finished 6-12 for 76 yards in a loss to Syracuse. After playing for Rutgers, then Arizona, and now Pitt, Savage is in for a challenge when his Panthers face off against one of the top defenses in the country.

With a very good front seven and a superb secondary, the Seminoles shouldn't have too many problems trying to stop Savage and Graham, who will be Pitt's two biggest offensive threats. If Winston, James Wilder Jr., and Devonta Freeman can kick-start the Florida State offense and neutralize the dominance of Donald in the trences, the Panthers will be in for a long night on national television.

    PREDICTION: Florida State 27-10 Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- Things certainly didn't go as planned for the Florida State Seminoles in this evening's season opener, but Jimbo Fisher's 'Noles found a way to salvage a victory.

"They kept fighting," said Fisher following the game. "They went down by 20 points on the road. They could have easily hung their heads and let the game slip away but they kept working hard and got what they deserved in the end. I can't say enough about how the boys fought tonight."

The Seminoles did indeed go down by three scores in the first half, in large part because of their inability to take care of the football offensively. An interception on the first drive, followed by a fumble on the second drive, and another interception early in the second quarter accounted for 13 of Pitt's first 20 points.

The first throw of Jameis Winston's Florida State career was extremely anti-climatic for Seminoles fans, as the redshirt freshman was intercepted by K'Waun Williams. After the Seminoles defense was able to hold Pitt to a field, Kenny Shaw fumbled on the ensuing Florida State possession, once again giving the Panthers a golden opportunity to score. However, Pitt's offense stalled out once again, as Florida State, luckily, trailed by only six after two turnovers.

Pitt forced the Seminoles to punt on their next possession, getting the ball back with 3:40 left in the first quarter. It wouldn't take long for the Panthers to rack up another score, as Pitt's own redshirt freshman quarterback, Chad Voytik, found Tyler Boyd on a 40 yard touchdown connection to give the home side a shocking 13-0 lead. As if the Seminoles weren't struggling enough, another arrant pass by Winston on the first play of the second quarter was picked off and returned 28 yards by Jahmahl Pardner for a touchdown, giving Pitt a 20-0 advantage.

However, Florida State was able to strike back late in the first half, finding pay dirt twice with the running game. After 3 turnovers in the first half, the Seminoles were extremely fortunate to be trailing by only two scores. Although James Wilder Jr. found the end zone for the second time with just under five minutes left in the third quarter, the Panthers answered right back, capping off an 80 yard drive with a touchdown reception by Ronald Jones from three yards out.

Despite three quarters of struggles, the Seminoles looked like a different football team in the final quarter. Winston's first touchdown pass of his career came on FSU's opening drive of the quarter, as Winston connected with Nick O'Leary for a 12 yard touchdown. Facing a six point deficit, the Seminoles were in need of a stop. On a converted 3rd down pass, Brandon Ifill put the ball on ground after a bone jarring hit by Nigel Terrell. LaMarcus Joyner picked up the loose ball and brought it back inside the Pitt 30. Just two plays later, Wilder pounded it over the goal line for this third score of the game, giving the Seminoles a one point lead.

The Panthers and Voytik took over with 5:44 remaining in the game. The drive started off ideally for the Panthers, as Voytik connected on crisp passes with Jones for two consecutive first downs. After another first down picked up on the ground by Isaac Bennett, Pitt looked to be rolling down the field. However, Pitt's fortunes turned on a dime. With pressure coming, Voytik failed to see Tyler Hunter drop back into coverage, and the junior defensive back intercepted the pass easily, ending Pittsburgh's hopes of an upset.

Although Winston struggled early on his debut, the promising Hueytown, Alabama product showed very impressive resolve, and with the help of Florida State's dominant running game, was able to guide the Seminoles to a comeback victory.

WEEK THREE PREVIEW: NEVADA vs. FLORIDA STATE
The Florida State Seminoles had an extremely close call in their season opener two weeks ago, narrowly avoiding an upset to the Pitt Panthers 35-34. Now, after a week off, the Seminoles will take the field for the first time at Doak Campbell Stadium this season in an attempt to improve to 2-0.

Coming into Tallahassee is the 1-1 Nevada Wolfpack. Led by playmaking quarterback Cody Fajardo, the Wolfpack run an uptempo offense from the pistol. Florida State's main objective will revolve around containing Fajardo and his ability to run. If the Seminoles can force the junior signal caller to throw the football, they should be on the receiving end of a few mistakes. While Fajardo has completed 61% of his passes through Nevada's first two games, he has thrown 3 interceptions as opposed to 2 touchdowns.

The Seminoles came into the season boasting yet another highly regarded defense. Although the defense, now under the guidance of new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, didn't show it's ability in the first half of the Pittsburgh game, the defensive unit stepped up and locked down the Panthers in the second half. Led by senior leaders Christian Jones, Telvin Smith, and LaMarcus Joyner, the Seminoles shut out Pitt in the final period and forced two game-changing turnovers down the stretch, which ultimately decided the outcome of the contest.

Like the defense, the offense struggled from the start as well. Jameis Winston tossed two early interceptions against the Panthers, but rebounded to be instrumental in Florida State's 20 point comeback. Once Winston began to pick apart the Pitt defense, Winston and the rest of the Florida State offense, particularly the rushing attack, had their way. Winston threw a touchdown to Nick O'Leary in the 4th quarter while James Wilder Jr. ran for over 100 yards and had 3 touchdowns for the game. Between Wilder, Winston, and Devonta Freeman, the Seminoles had over 200 yards on the ground.

If the Florida State running game can continue to click, it will certainly open things up for Winston through the air. Look for the Seminoles to try to establish the run early against a mediocre Nevada defense in hopes of setting up easy throws for their star freshman signal caller. Even if the Seminoles struggle for the second straight game, their talent alone should help them get by a relatively weak Nevada squad.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- Florida State certainly didn't do anything to silence their critics in the first half of their game against Nevada this afternoon. However, a prolific showing in the second half by the offense, defense, and special teams, allowed the Seminoles to follow up a lackluster start with a superb finish.

After FSU quarterback Jameis Winston connected with Kelvin Benjamin for a 25 yard touchdown pass on the 'Noles' first drive the game, it looked liked they would be in the driver's seat from start to finish. However, a long drive by the Wolfpack at the end of the first quarter leveled the score at 7.

From there, the Wolfpack began to stifle Winston and the Florida State offense. Although junior running back James Wilder Jr. was running rampant on the Nevada defense, an arrant and inconsistent passing attack hindered Wilder's ability with the ball. Two Nevada field goals and a 46 yard field goal from FSU's Roberto Aguayo made the score 13-10 at half time, in favor of the upset-minded Wolfpack.

Although the Wolfpack really slowed down Winston in the first half, the young quarterback came out firing in the second half. After Winston scampered in for a score on a quarterback keeper, Wilder tallied his 4th touchdown of the season with a 17 yard run. After trailing by three at the break, the 'Noles found their stride on offense and took a 24-13 lead.

Cody Fajardo, not necessarily renowned for his passing ability, had a very good game for the Wolfpack however, routinely picking apart the Florida State defense. In attempts to force Fajardo into mistakes, FSU defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt continued to ramp up the pressure on the Nevada quarter, sending 4, 5, or 6 defenders on a blitz. The increased pass rush in the second half seemed to hinder Fajardo, as a relentless Seminoles defense racked up 10 total sacks on the day. Redshirt sophomore lineman Giorgio Newberry recorded 5 sacks of his own in a record setting performance.

With Wilder running all over the Nevada defense for a total of 204 yards, the play action game was opened up. Winston found Nick O'Leary in the corner of the end zone early in the 4th quarter to extend the Florida State lead to 18. Nevada responded with a long drive, capped off with a 9 yard run by wide receiver Aaron Bradley. Not to be outdone, Florida State wide receiver Rashad Green struck back with a touchdown of his own, returning the ensuing kickoff 103 yards down the right hashmark for another FSU touchdown. With the game all but over, Greene found pay dirt once again, hauling in a 28 yard pass from Winston in the back of the end zone, concluding the 'Noles' dominant second half.

Although it was by no means a pretty win for the Seminoles, a solid defensive effort and an emerging offense, led by Wilder, propelled Florida State to their second win of the season.

WEEK FOUR PREVIEW: BETHUNE-COOKMAN vs. FLORIDA STATE
Coming off a solid 45-21 win against Nevada last week, the Florida State Seminoles should be feeling confident as they enter today's game against FCS team, Bethune-Cookman. Last season, the Seminoles dominated both of their FCS opponents by a combined score of 124-3. With the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman coming into Tallahassee, Florida State will be looking to take care of business and record their third win of the 2013 campaign.

Florida State's offense has been somewhat hit or miss to this point. While the running game has been a cornerstone of the offense so far, with James Wilder Jr. leading the way, the passing game has struggled. Jameis Winston has shown flashes of brilliance at times, but has also displayed traits of a freshman quarterback. Some poor decision making and arrant throws will certainly improve as Winston becomes more comfortable with the college game, and he has a perfect opportunity to add to his experience against the Wildcats.

If Winston, Wilder, and the rest of the Florida State offense can get going early, expect this game to be out of reach very quickly.

                          PREDICTION: Florida State 55-0 Bethune-Cookman

                            TALLAHASSEE, Florida ---
For the first time this season, the Florida State Seminoles dominated a game from start to finish, albeit against an FCS opponent. The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats came into Doak Campbell Stadium extremely outmatched by the Seminoles, and it showed. Before exiting the game early because of a minor injury, Jameis Winston threw for four scores, tossing a pair to both Kenny Shaw and Rashad Greene

The triple headed running attack of Winston, James Wilder Jr., and Devonta Freeman once again proved to be a crucial part of the Florida State offense. While Wilder did not surpass the century mark, the trio accounted for 216 yards on the ground. Both Freeman and Winston found the end zone on the ground as well.

Jeremy Pruitt's defensive unit improved once again, as they continue to get pressure on the quarterback through a variety of zone blitz and linebacker blitz schemes out of both the 4-3 and 3-4. After recording 10 sacks against Nevada a week ago, the 'Noles took down the Bethune-Cookman signal caller 7 times today. Two of the 7 sacks came from Giorgio Newnberry on the heels of his 5 sack performance against Nevada.

With their perfect start to the season in tact, the Seminoles travel to Chestnut Hill to square off with the equally undefeated Boston College Eagles in what has the potential to be a trap game for the
                            3-0 'Noles.

Very clean and looks like a nice follow. Good luck to you, though I'm not keen on the 'Noles.

I guess I wouldn't be keen on the 'Noles either if I was a VT fan
