Field Goal Determines Game; Dolphins 30 Patriots 27
This would be the fifth time that Ryan Tannehill and Tom Brady would square off.
The Dolphins started out their 2014 season at home playing the New England Patriots. After the Patriots won the toss, they chose to kick to start the game.
1st Quarter:
The Dolphins and Patriots both traded 3 and outs on their opening drives and the Dolphins followed that with another 3 and out.
Tom Brady would pull through this drive, going 4-4 for 57 yards on the drive. Topped it off with a 6 YD TD pass to Shane Vereen (0-7).
Lamar Miller would carry the team down the field gaining 45 yards on the drive. He would take the ball into the endzone on a 2 YD TD run (7-7).
Randy Starks and the Miami defense would come out sacking Tom Brady twice on the drive and forcing him to make a bad throw causing a three and out.
Ryan Tannehill after starting the game 2-6 came out on this drive going downfield completing 5 of 6 passes topping it off with a 17 yard in route to Jarvis Landry for the TD (14-7).
2nd Quarter:
A drive that was lead by both a mix of passing and running was topped off by kicker Stephen Gostowski who kicked a 51 YD FG (14-10).
Ryan Tannehill on the following drive would make one of his only two mistakes of the game, after leading the team downfield and on the New England 2, a speed option was called. The ball was snapped, Tannehill started to run, as the defense came at him a bad shuffle sent the ball behind RB Knowshon Moreno. The ball was picked up by Dont'a Hightower who returned it 95 YDs for the TD (14-17).
Both teams again would trade 3 and outs. The Patriots would punt the ball to the Dolphins with 55 seconds left in the half. If it wasn't for a Lamar Miller punt return to the Patriots 35 the half would have ended 17-14 in the Patriots favor. But it happened, and the Dolphins would get down to the Patriots 10 before kicking a FG to end the half 17-17).
Halftime:
At the end of the first half the Dolphins are being lead by the works of Lamar Miller. In the first half he had 78 YDs rushing for a TD and two returns for a total of 91 yards.
For the Patriots the standout player is a clear cut Tom Brady. He is 13-14 in the first half for 110 YDs. Tearing apart the Dolphins secondary.
3rd quarter:
In what was a quarter spent with sacks, yards for losses, and fumbles. The Dolphins were the only team to put points on the board. Ryan Tannehill would connect with one of his favorite targets Charles Clay for a 7 YD TD pass (24-17) with 45 seconds left in the quarter.
Tom Brady would be sacked by Randy Starks for the 4th time of the game (7:08), with a bruised shoulder he would have to sit out the rest of the quarter.
4th Quarter:
With Ryan Mallett leading the team to start off the quarter, he showed no signs of being scared. In his only two drives he threw the ball 11 times completing 7 passes for 65 yards.
The Patriots would be the first to put points on the board with a Gostowski 53 YD FG (24-20). His second 50 yarder of the game.
Caleb Sturgis would answer back with a field goal of his own, a 26 yarder to give the Dolphins a TD lead. (27-20)
After back to back three and outs, the Patriots would get the ball with 1:54 left and no timeouts. Tom Brady would do Tom Brady things and lead the team down the field and score with 25 seconds left in the game hit Gronk for an 18 yard pass. They would tie the game and eyeing OT all they had to do was stop Lamar Miller.
After todays performance he made his case to be the AFC Player of The Week, Lamar Miller would return the kick off all the way to the 50 before being pushed out of bounds. All the Dolphins had to do was get to the Patriots 42 for Sturgis to have a shot. Ryan Tannehill did just that, he would hit Mike Wallace for a 30 yard pass over the middle. This would lineup Caleb Sturgis for a 37 yard FG and he would capitalize. (30-27)

Ryan Tannehill 27/40 297 Yds 2 TDs 2 INTs

Comment from Jon Howard:
"I am really happy with how today turned out. I didn't expect this outcome to be honest, but Ryan Tannehill and Lamar Miller carried us offensively and Randy Starks couldn't of had a better game on the defensive side. We now head into Week 2 with a 1-0 record. The fans seemed to love todays game and we hope we can have them enjoy it every single week."
