                News from around the BNC
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show

With the ending of spring practice, we continue our look at some of the top incoming freshman that look to make an impact this season. Here are some that have either impressed their coaches during spring practice or made plays during their school's spring game.

#16 Patrick Parks - QB Columbia State (80 Overall) - According to team sources, it appears that the Statesmen will have a new quarterback under center this year. After a long battle during spring practice, it appears that freshman Patrick Parks have beaten out long time starter Perry DeLoach. One of the first recruits that new head coach Carl Evans recruited, Parks has great awareness about what's happening on the field as well as good arm strength. Although his accuracy on throw might be questionable to some, it appears that Coach Evans believes that Parks gives them the best chance to win.

#48 Kennedy Hudson - HB Wyoming Tech (78 Overall) - According to media sources that have been covering the Wyoming Tech Warriors spring practice, it appears that freshman running back Kennedy Hudson has won the starting job over three year starter Garth Ruffin. A powerful runner that is a natural with carrying the ball as well as breaking tackles, Hudson will give the Warriors a much needed rusher to take the pressure off of starter quarterback Robby Norman.

#80 Matt Viselli - WR Vermont State (79 Overall) - One of three wide receivers signed by the Timberwolves, Viselli joins a group of receivers that are considered to be among the best in conference led by senior Lou Corbett. Possessing great speed as well as a excellent hands, Viselli gives current starting quarterback Randall Clemens another target to throw to. Even though he is listed fourth on the depth chart, Viselli will surely see playing time during the season and especially next year as seniors Corbett and Colt Herman are set to graduate

#12 Jace Cooper - QB Vermont State * (81 Overall) - One of two quarterbacks signed in this year's class, Jace Cooper joins a crowded field of players vying for the starting quarterback position. A couple of things that coaches liked about him was his pocket awareness, as well as his arm strength and the accuracy of his passes. Even though he is currently stated to be the backup to sophomore Randall Clemens, Coach Thomas believes that not everything is set in stone and that Cooper could possibly become a starter.

#1 Devin Welch - HB Columbia State (78 Overall) - According to media reports covering the Statesmen, it appears that freshman running back Devon Welch has won the starting role for the upcoming season. One of the top recruits for the Statesmen, Welch brings high speed and quickness, something that the other running backs had not displayed during spring practice. With his great catching skills, as well as being good at returning kicks and punts, Welch gives the Statesmen as well as fellow freshman quarterback Patrick Parks yet another quality weapon to hand off or throw to.

#32 Braylen Wright - HB Delaware College (78 Overall) - According to reports coming from Delaware College spring practice, it appears that freshman running back Braylen Wright has won the starting battle over third year starter junior Darrell Mullins. A back with blazing speed and power, Coach Travis Phillips believes that Wright will become one of the best players to ever put on a Hornets uniform.

#12 Frankie Leonard - QB Portland Tech (79 Overall) - After spring practice, the question of who will back up quarterback Jonas Newton was answered as freshman Frankie Leonard beat out sophomore Antwaun Martindale and fellow freshman Wesley Archie. Although slower than Newton, Leonard has a stronger arm as well as better accuracy on his passes, especially on deep passes. While it is too early to tell if Leonard will supplant Newton as the starter, it may be only a matter of time before he becomes the starter.

#3 Vernon Parrish - QB Vancouver State (80 Overall) - Following the spring game, media reports that freshman Vernon Parrish has beaten out fellow freshmen Clarence Cowan and Walter Hardin for the backup position behind junior Tyson Kaplan. A little bit of a scrambler than Kaplan, Parrish is able to make plays with both his feet and his legs. Although he is unable to throw deep passes as Kaplan, his passes are more accurate. Look for Parrish to start sooner rather than later, especially if Kaplan plays poorly like he did last season.

                ==============================

I have created everyone up to Vernon Parrish. You guys can also have another player if you want to. Providence State and Vermont State* have reached their CAP limit, but other teams still have space (Alaska State, Billings State, South Dakota Tech, Portland Tech, and Vancouver State have yet to receive any CAPs, so there are spots to be had for those schools). I hope to get this started up as soon as I can get at least one CAP for each school.

                * I made an exception to add Jace to Vermont State's roster

I have added both Leonard and Parrish to their respective teams.

I will start the dynasty one week from today, so I will be taking CAPs (or recruits if you want to as well) before the season starts. Three teams are still CAP-less (Alaska State, Billings State, and South Dakota Tech), so if you are wanting to do a CAP, I would suggest those three teams. You can still create CAPs for other teams, but I would like to see each team with at least one CAP.

Before the dynasty begins, I will also announce which of the twelve teams I will control. I've narrowed the decision down to four teams (Alaska State, Billings State, Providence State, or South Dakota Tech). I will play around with each team before coming to a decision.

Once I begin the dynasty, I will also take a few CAPs to create as recruits.

Five Things to Watch at Big North Media Days
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
                        July 17, 2013 - 9:00 AM ET

Toronto, Canada -- Welcome to Big North media days.

After a long off-season, the beginning of the season starts with the arrival of Big North media days. In a few hours, the inside of the Four Seasons Hotel here in Toronto will be turned into a media circus as 1,000 media members from all across the United States and Canada will get a chance to speak with representatives from all twelve teams before casting their ballots at the end of the three day event.

Here are five things to keep an eye on this week in Toronto:

                        1. Experienced Teams: As we enter yet another season, one thing that is apparent is that most teams are bringing back their quarterbacks. With the exception of Billings State, Columbia State, Manchester State, Providence State, and Vermont State, everyone else is bringing back their starter. With the offenses that this league is known for, this could be a year to remember for the offenses of the conference.

                        2. Conference title contenders: With most teams bringing back key starters, we could be in for a thrilling race to see who wins the conference title. Billings State, Providence State, and Vermont State are among the contenders to win a conference title, but with a new starting quarterback, how will they fare once conference play begins? Meanwhile, Alaska State, Bismarck State, and South Dakota Tech all return their starters from last year, but with the losses of key players from last year's teams, will their new starters be enough to lead them to the title game? We will find out soon enough.

                        3. New coaching debuts: Three coaches will make their debuts this season as Coach Carl Evans (Columbia State), Travis Phillips (Delaware College), and Robert Taylor (Wyoming Tech) take over new jobs. While both Evans and Phillips are rising newcomers from the coordinator ranks, Taylor have been coaching for over 30 years at various stops in college, the NFL, and the CFL before returning to Cheyenne to take over at his alma mater. Only time will tell if their respective school made the correct choice in hiring them.

                        4. Coaches on the hot seat: After a disastrous season last year, Vancouver State coach Chester Moody is feeling the heat after having failed to get the Thunderbirds to a bowl game during their first five years of existence. With another possible down year coming, Moody's time in Vancouver might be coming to an end barring a strong improvement. Meanwhile, at Manchester State, Dale Talbert is beginning to feel the heat after failing to make it to a bowl game for a third consecutive year after having been to one the previous three years. Despite a show of support from the athletic director, another poor showing could mean increased pressure for his firing by a fan base that wants to contend for titles, not just for bowl games.

                        5. Rumors at Alaska State: With senior quarterback Buster Holiday returning for his final season in Anchorage, Coach Marty Odegaard's Alaska State is looking to return to the conference title game. However, there appears to be a rumor about him possibly looking to leave coaching to become the school's athletic director after finding out earlier this morning that Earl Fairbanks, the man that hired Odegaard 14 years ago to start up the Bears football program died earlier this morning after a long battle with cancer. If Odegaard does step down, it appears that offensive coordinator Martel Goodwin will take his place. Goodwin, as some of you may recall, played under Odegaard for four years before suffering a career-ending injury in his final game. Although a rumor, we will keep our eyes open when Odegaard and the Bears speak on Friday.

Steve Levy: Breaking news coming out of Toronto from Big North media days as Alaska State head coach Marty Odegaard is stepping down to take over the vacant athletic director position that opened up following the death of longtime AD Earl Fairbanks. With more on this story, we go live to Toronto where Big North reporter Dan Moore is standing outside the main lobby at the Four Seasons.

Dan, can you tell us why Odegaard is stepping down to take over the AD position?

Dan Moore: Good evening, Steve. The reason that Odegaard is stepping down came down to a couple of reasons.

First, he felt that he wanted to spend more time with his family. He has a son that has just begun playing high school football and he wanted to be able to catch all of his games, something that he wouldn't be able to do as a head coach.

Second, he feels that his offensive coordinator Martel Goodwin will be able to continue the work that they have started when he was hired by Odegaard last year to run the offense. Odegaard believes that Goodwin will maintain the focus that they had last year when they won the division title and use that momentum to repeat as conference champions.

Levy: How does this affect the Big North in terms of early season predictions?

Moore: Well, Steve, it appears that a lot of the media have Billings State winnning the division and facing off against Providence State for the Big North Title. When I asked some of the voters why they changed their picks, they all seem to believe that while the team will be good, they don't believe that Goodwin can lead them to the division title. Now this isn't a slight towards Goodwin, it just seems that we don't know much about him other than he spent a couple of years learning from new Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly and that he played under Odegaard.

Levy: We will have more on this story as it develops. Dan Moore, live at Big North media days. Thanks, Dan.

                          Moore: My pleasure.

Odegaard to Hand Football Team to Goodwin
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
                            July 19, 2013 - 9:00 AM ET

Toronto, Canada -- Marty Odegaard announced during Big North media days that he is stepping down immediately after being named Alaska State's new athletic director. Odegaard, 42, will take over the position from long-time AD Earl Fairbanks passed away earlier this week at the age of 73 following a long battle with cancer.

As expected, Odegaard has already picked his successor in offensive coordinator Martel Goodwin.

"I feel that I have given the program the start it needs in order to compete in the Big North, Odegaard said when asked about why he was stepping down.. "I believe that I have done all I can for the program. With the unfortunate passing of AD Fairbanks, I feel that I could best serve the university by continuing the work that Earl started when he started up the Bears athletic department back in 1988."

Odegaard was hired in 1998 to be the head coach of a fledging program that was just starting out as an FBS independent in one of the most isolated regions of the country. 14 years later, Odegaard leaves the program with a mark of 94-83 and going 5-3 in bowl games.

Odegaard's teams have been defined by a punishing ground attack and stout defenses, both keys to the team's success during the second half of his tenure. His teams usually were ranked among the top three in conference with his defenses considered to be among the best nationally.

Odegaard brought in Goodwin, who played running back during his time at Alaska State before becoming a graduate assistant under Odegaard, to take over Alaska State's offense, which has consistently ranked in the top quarter of teams in the country in points scored and yards gained.

Following the death of Fairbanks, Odegaard approached Goodwin about taking over the position while they were heading to Toronto. The combination of family, his confidence in Goodwin, and the opportunity to become the athletic director for Alaska State convinced him that it was time for him to step away from coaching.
"Martel Goodwin is the right man to replace me," Odegaard said to reporters.

Senior quarterback Buster Holiday said that the team will be in good hands with Goodwin taking over.

"I feel that Coach (Goodwin) will continue to carry on the work that Coach (Odegaard) started years ago," Holiday said. "I believe that Coach (Odegaard) have set us on the path to success during our time here. It will be up to us to continue down this path that he laid out for us when he recruited us years ago."

Goodwin, 27, played under Odegaard from 2005-2008 before an injury derailed his senior season. After his college career ended, he served as a graduate assistant before being hired as an assistant coach on Oregon coach Chip Kelly's staff. After two years of studying under Kelly, he was brought back by Odegaard last year.

"I am thankful for this opportunity to take over for a man that helped me to this point in my career," said Goodwin, who has no head coaching experience.

Odegaard said that he expected no problems in the transition and decided to make the decision now to avoid any issues before the season starts. This way, Goodwin will be able to focus on bringing in his first recruiting class.

Odegaard also has no plans to be a meddlesome athletic director, which follows the example that Fairbanks set when he hired Odegaard back in 1998.

(CAP applications are closed. However, recruit CAPs are still open. I will have the dynasty up and running by this weekend.)

On the High school recruit list, I forgot to add in the city and state portion for the application. For anyone wanting to create a recruit, use this application instead:

                                First Name:
                                Last Name:
                                Position:
                                Height:
                                Weight:
                                City and State:
                                Jersey Number:
                                Skin Tone (Light, Medium, Dark):
                                3 Strengths:
                                3 Weaknesses:

Like I did with the CAPs, I will roll two dice and use the total from the dice plus a base of 70 (i.e. your roll is 7. Your overall will be 77). If you are not picked up by any of the created teams, I will still track your players.

The deadline for the high school recruits is Friday at noon. Once I return from work on Friday, the dynasty will truly begin.

letsgocavs99, since I forgot to put the city and state down, if you want, I could add your CAP to the Bismarck roster for this season if you want. Or if you want to add your CAP's hometown and get recruited that way, I could do that as well.
