What If? A Fantasy Draft CFM featuring the Washington Redskins

    Washington Redskins Fantasy Draft CFM

After a failed attempt with the Houston Oilers, I've decided to try again by using the Washington Redskins. Also, I wanted to do a fantasy draft this time around, because I like building the team scratch, knowing that I picked every single player makes it feel like they are "my guys". Also, the league is pretty balanced as long as you don't take as many <25 year old players as possible. As you'll see, what some great young players and some veterans who don't have much play left in them.

The team is built around defense first, a strong offensive line, a playmaker or two on offense, and a stop-gap QB. I'm going to list the depth chart so you guys can see who I drafted. Some of the key guys I drafted were: Robert Quinn, Suh (not going to try to spell his first name), Kam Chancellor, Marshawn Lynch, the Pouncey brothers, and Cordarelle Patterson.

EDIT: The top 2 DT's are Suh and John Jenkins

    Week 1 vs Texans

Our season starts off against the Houston Texans featuring: Sam Bradford, Ray Rice, Anquan Boldin, Alex Mack, Terrell Suggs and Richard Sherman. We started off with the football and on the very first play of the season, Marshawn Lynch fumbles the football and Houston recovers. Thankfully our team was built with defense and the Texans offense could only muster up a field goal to make 3-0 Houston. 3 points was all that Houston would get on this day as their offense was held to 163 yards total with Bradford being sacked 3 times and picked off 4 times. Ray Rice was pretty ineffective as he had only 9 carries for 31 yards. Our draft strategy of drafting a guy to be a run stuffer at the left DE with 3 fast LB's helped us cut off running lanes.

It took a while for our offense to get going, but Marshawn Lynch had a couple of nice runs as we gave him the football 26 times for 99 yards and 2 TD's. With Josh McCown as our starting QB, we didn't ask him to do too much and he was mistake free through out the game. However, McCown could not remain injury free as he was knocked out of the game twice. McCown spread the ball to his WR's Cordarelle Patterson, Doug Baldwin, and Reggie Wayne. We want to use Cordarelle Patterson like Seattle is using Percy Harvin IRL, so we'll have to get him more touches. Overall, it's hard to complain when you win 23-3. We'll be monitoring the games and if the game is too easy, we'll have to make adjustments to our sliders (Armor and Swords sliders BTW).

Next time we face the Jaguars who have Peyton Manning as their QB and he had a great game throwing 3 TD's in the win over the Eagles. Will our defense shut down the Jaguars? Will our offense pick up the pace? Find next time....

      Week 2 vs Jaguars

After an impressive win on the road vs the Texans, the Redskins host Peyton Manning and the Jaguars for Week 2. Jacksonville was able to score early as Manning found Mike Wallace for a TD, beating Charles Woodson who was playing deep. We stayed within the gameplan and were able to grind out the runs with Marshawn Lynch who ran for over 100 yards. Peyton Manning was more effective than Bradford last week as he was able to complete more passes, but he did throw 2 costly INT's to Charles Woodson. Special Teams forced a fumbled before the half and Ernie Sims returned it for a TD to give us a 17-10 lead.

The defense continued to play well and we were able to win the battle for field position. Eventually, Jacksonville was stuck in their own end zone as Robert Quinn sacked Manning for a safety which iced the game for us 22-10. We also did a better job of getting Cordarelle Patterson involved as he had some more running plays and even scored a TD before the half. The Redskins are now 2-0 and are now looking towards their division rival, the Philadelphia Eagles. We'll see you next time for that game....

Re: What If? A Fantasy Draft CFM featuring the Washington Redskins

        Week 3 vs Eagles

The Redskins are off to a good start at 2-0 and they travel to their division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles. Josh McCown had suffered a herniated disk at the end of our win against the Jaguars last week and we were shocked to learn that he would miss 6 games including this one. So, Josh Freeman will start and hopefully he doesn't make too many mistakes. This game was a defensive slugfest as both teams had problems generating offense. The Eagles couldn't move the football at all, while the Redskins couldn't get their running game going at all as we could only muster 68 yards total on the ground against a tough Eagles front 7. The scoring started when Cordarelle Patterson took a ~60 yard punt return to the house to give us a 7-0 lead.

The defense continued to dominate and the Redskins offense was unimpressive but still added 6 more points to make it 13-0. The Eagles finally got a drive going in the 4th quarter, but Cooper Taylor stepped in front of a Ryan Tannehill pass at the goal line to stop another scoring drive. However, Josh Freeman proceeded to turn the ball over and the Eagles were set up in our red zone. Fred Jackson and Lamar Miller took care of the rest and put up 7 points. The Redskins kicked another field goal and were able to run out the clock and win 16-7. We're now 3-0, but the offense has struggled and we'll have to improve our offense for the Giants on Sunday Night Football.

The Giants are led by Russell Wilson who has targets such as Alshon Jeffrey and Matt Forte to throw the football to. I've also tweaked my sliders (Armor and Sword's) by increasing the CPU QB Accruacy by 15 points to 25 and CPU Run Blocking by 5 to 70. Hopefully these will give us a greater challenge going forward and we'll have find out how it shakes out next time....

          Week 4 vs Giants

This was our real first test of the year as the undefeated Redskins hosted the Giants on Sunday Night Football. After going three and out, the Giants were hot early as Russell Wilson found Alshon Jeffrey to set up a Matt Forte TD to make 7-0. Our offense sputtered early and the Giants took advantage of the good field position by taking a 10-0 lead. However, our offense started to get moving when Marshawn Lynch was able to go into beast mode and grinded out the yards. Josh Freeman, who was lackluster in this game with the exception of 2 passes, found Joel Dressen for 50 yards and Cordarelle Patterson for a 25 yard TD.

The special teams contributed to the scoring by forcing DRC to fumble which was picked up by Ernie Sims who set us up in great field position. Marshawn Lynch finished off the drive and within 2 minutes we were now ahead 14-10 at the half. In the 2nd half, the Redskins defense was able to apply pressure to Russell Wilson who was sacked 6 times. However, Russell was able to make plays with his feet and gained 57 yards on the ground. Wilson did get injured later in the game and was relieved temporarily by Bruce Gradkowski.

Neither offense was able to enter the end zone again and we finished the game with a 17-13 win to move to 4-0. I liked how the pass defense played (a little too much), but the run defense was a little soft. Our offense has to play better, especially in the passing game. Josh Freeman is a short leash from here on out. Next week we face the Seahawks on MNF. There will be some more slider adjustments after this game, and we'll see you next time....

            Week 5 vs Seahawks

For the 2nd straight week, the Redskins play on prime time television, this time against the lowly Seahawks. Blake Bortles played ok early and was able to drive the Seahawks down thei field to give them a quick 3-0 lead. We stuck with the gameplan of giving Marshawn Lynch the football and he rewarded us with 111 yards on 20 carries. Josh Freeman was efficient today throwing 2 TD's with one going to Derrick Coleman and the other one going to Louis Murphy who made a great catch in the endzone on a perfectly thrown ball by Freeman.

With the lead 17-3 going in the half, the Seahawks continued to struggle to get points on the board, but Alfred Morris was able to grind out some yards and keep them in the game. In the 4th quarter, Alfred Morris was able to break through and score to cut the deficit to 7. However, the Redskins would not be denied and when given advantageous field position, the defense was able to tackle Bortles in the end zone for a safety which effectively ended the game with the final score being 19-10. The Redskins are 5-0 going into Arizona who has a tough defense with players like Von Miller and Patrick Willis in the LB corp. We'll see you next time....

              Week 6 vs Cardinals

This was our toughest game so far in this season. Geno Smith and the Cardinals passed early and often and our pass rush was non-existent for the 1st half as the Cardinals were able to move down the field and Geno Smith found Marlon Brown for a TD. Marshawn Lynch got going early and had 131 yards on 24 carries on the day. However, we failed to score early and the Cardinals responded by taking a 10-0 lead early. We were able to kick a field goal to cut the deficit to 7, but we were on the brink of the game being blown up early when the Cardinals were able to move towards our goal line.

However, Charles Woodson was able to pick off Geno Smith to keep us in the game. Freeman was average for most of the game, but found Louis Murphy on a post route to make the score 13-10 Cardinals. Our defense allowed more yards to the Cardinals who also have Adrian Peterson, but they didn't use him that often in this game. The Redskins pass rush was able to get to Geno and we forced Arizona to punt and give us the ball back. Freeman and Lynch were able to move the ball down the field and Boobie Dixon finished off the drive with a 1 yard TD, but took a vicious shot from Patrick Willis and was knocked out of the game.

Charles Woodson picked off another Geno Smith pass to end the game with the final score being 17-13. We picked another win to move to 6-0 and we now face the 3-3 Titans who are lead Phillip Rivers at QB and A.J. Green at WR. We'll see you next time....
