      CONFERENCE PREVIEW

By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
      August 24, 2013 - 8:00 AM ET

As we enter the final week before the college season, I will give my pre-season predictions for how the conference will end up at the end of the regular season. Here are how I believe the conference will shape out.

      BNC West

      (79 OVR/83 OFF/78 DEF)
The reigning conference champion Alaska State Bears are picked to win the conference once again. Led by senior quarterback and 1st Team All-Big North Selection Adrian Olsen and a tough defense, they have a good chance to repeat as champions.

      [URL=http://s620.photobucket.com/user/DeltaTiger1/media/NCAA%20Football%20Dynasty/SouthDakotaTechStormMiniLogo.png.html](74 OVR/77 OFF/73 DEF)
Even though Ikaika Pittman has graduated, the Storm are in great shape to finally make the conference title game this season. With most of their key players returning from last year's 9-4 team, South Dakota Tech could have their best season yet under Franklin.

      (79 OVR/83 OFF/76 DEF)
Senior quarterback Austin Chase leads a 49ers team that is expected to take a step back this season after six years of at least 9 wins. With a defense that lost most of its starters from last year to graduation or the pros, the 49ers will most likely have to rely on their offense if they want to compete for the division title.

      (75 OVR/75 OFF/76 DEF)
One of the most disappointing teams last year, Bismarck State struggled once their starting quarterback Maxwell Washington was knocked out for the year with a concussion. With nearly a year under his belt after filling in for Washington, Coach Barnett is hoping that junior quarterback Alex Robinson will lead them back to the post-season.

      (70 OVR/72 OFF/70 DEF)
After finishing 2-10 last year, Vancouver State looks like it will finish with a similar record if the Tigers don't see a remarkable improvement. There is a lot of pressure for Coach Chester Moody to get the team to a bowl game, but with games against the top two teams from the eastern division, it looks like the Tigers will be home again and with possibly a new coach for next year.

      (65 OVR/68 OFF/61 DEF)
Finishing tied with the worst record in the conference last year, Victoria State head coach Robert Taylor must right the ship this season or he could be on the way out. One of the players that Coach Taylor will depend on will be freshman running back Kennedy Hudson, the best player that Coach Taylor has ever recruited. While it's unlikely that Taylor survives the season, if they can win at least four games, he might have a chance.

      BNC East

      (81 OVR/83 OFF/78 DEF)
Finishing behind the division champion Providence State, Vermont State looks to return the favor. Freshman quarterback Jace Cooper will have plenty of targets to throw to while the Timberwolves defense looks to dominate once again.

      (83 OVR/86 OFF/78 DEF)
Despite having the best team last season, Providence State lost to the Alaska State Bears in a close BNC Championship game. With perhaps the best quarterback in the conference in senior Alonzo Perez, the Titans will be tough to beat.

      (75 OVR/75 OFF/75 DEF)
One of the top teams last season, Portland Tech returns most of their starters from last year's team. With much of the same expected of the Owls, they go as freshman quarterback Frankie Leonard goes. I expect them to make things interesting in the Eastern division.

      (68 OVR/70 OFF/70 DEF)
After a less than stellar season last year, Columbia State decided to start anew by firing the entire coaching staff. Enter Coach Carl Evans, who hopes that his prize recruits true freshman quarterback Patrick Parks and freshman running back Devin Welch will help the program get back on track. While they won't win the division, I expect them to win a few more games to possibly make a bowl game.

      (75 OVR/77 OFF/75 DEF)
After failing to get a bowl invite, Manchester State is hoping to return to the post-season. With a new quarterback in sophomore Jamarcus Moss and a defense that lost a lot of starters from last year's squad, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Kings take another step backwards this season.

      (67 OVR/67 OFF/66 DEF)
After another disappointing season, Delaware College did what Columbia State did: hire a new coaching staff. Enter new coach Travis Phillips who must now try to repair the damage that the previous coaching staff did to the program. While they won win many games, I expect freshman running back Braylen Wright to give then a little spark.

Here is how I see the conference shaping out (overall records are in (). Does not include post-season predictions.

      Providence State (12-1, 9-1) - Conference Champion
Alaska State (9-4, 7-3) - Western Division Champion
      South Dakota Tech (9-3, 6-3)*
      Bismarck State (9-3, 6-4)*
      Billings State (7-5, 6-3)*
      Delaware College (8-4, 5-4)**
      Manchester State (8-4, 5-4)**
      Vermont State (7-5. 5-4)**
      Vancouver State (5-7, 3-6)
      Portland Tech (4-8, 2-7)
      Columbia State (3-9, 1-8)
      Victoria State (1-11, 0-9)

      * South Dakota Tech hold the tiebreaker between them, Bismarck State, and Billings State

** Delaware College has the edge over Manchester State and Vermont State.

The Bears kick off the season with a game against Connecticut on "Kickoff Thursday." The following week, the Bears will host #14 Arizona State in Anchorage in the first meeting between both schools. The next week, the Bears will host Houston in its final non-conference game before taking a bye week. The Bears end the month with a trip to Providence to take on the Titans in a rare Wednesday conference game.

Schedule Analysis: The Bears should come into their matchup against the Titans with a 2-1 record. I believe that the Sun Devils would win against the Bears, although stranger things have happened. The Titans game will tell us a lot about the Bears and could possibly give us a glimpse of a possible rematch in the Big North Championship game.

My prediction: 2-2 (Losses to Arizona State and Providence State

October sees the Bears back in the Eastern Time Zone as they take on Manchester State in a rare Tuesday game. The Bears don't play again until the following Saturday at home against Portland Tech. The last two games are against rivals as the Bears will host Victoria State, followed by a trip to Billings for the annual matchup against the 49ers to close out the month.

Schedule Analysis: The Bears should be favored to win the first three games with the Billings State game being a toss up. I think that the Bears will make it through October with little issue.

My guess: 3-1 (Loss to Billings State)

          Nov 23vs South Dakota Tech
          Nov 30at Vancouver State

The Bears start off the month with a well-timed bye before facing Columbia State at home. The Bears will then face the Dakota schools in back-to-back weeks starting with a trip to Bismarck to take on the Rough Riders followed by the last home game of the season against South Dakota Tech. The Bears end the regular season on the road against rival Vancouver State.

Schedule Analysis: The schedule for November becomes easier as the Bears only face one team that could cause problems. The third game against the Storm would be the one game that could trip up the Bears as the Storm are considered to be a darkhorse for the Western Division title. The other three games look to be manageable for the Bears.

          My guess: 4-0
Regular Season Prediction: 8-4 (7-2 Conference)

With the Bears preview finished, I will go over the other teams' schedule, pointing out key games on the schedule, as well as give you details on which new players could make an impact for their schools:

Here is the link to the schedule for all teams: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...MxQ/edit#gid=0

          Billings State Key Games:
Sept. 21 vs. #13 Oklahoma State
          Oct. 5 @ Providence State
          Oct. 12 vs. Vermont State
          Oct. 26 vs. Alaska State

The 49ers have one of the toughest schedules in the Big North, highlighted by games against #13 Oklahoma State, Providence State, Vermont State, and Alaska State. Following the Alaska State game, the schedule is set up for Billings State to make a run through almost every other game. I expect them to get at least eight wins.

          Players to look out for
QB Austin Chase: The 49ers new starter, Chase did not play as much last season. Expect him to play well once he gets the offense down.

MLB Caleb Page: The captain of the 49ers defense, Page looks to become the team's all-time leader in tackles. A bit slower than most middle linebackers, his powerful and accurate tackling makes up for it.

          Bismarck State Key Games:
          Oct. 19 @ Vermont State
          Oct. 26 vs. Providence State
          Nov. 2 vs. Billings State
          Nov. 16 vs. Alaska State

The Rough Riders could possibly be 5-0 heading into their game against Vermont State. Bismarck State must play the top four teams this year within a five game stretch late in the year, but get three of them at home.

With perhaps the toughest conference schedule based on last season's results, the Rough Riders will be lucky to become bowl eligible. I expect Bismarck State to win seven games.

          Players to look out for
QB Alex Robison: After filling in last season, Robison will be counted on to lead his team back to the post-season for the first time since 2008. In order for him to have success, he must cut down on his interceptions after he led the conference in picks. I expect him to have a great year.

LE Jack Jamison: One of the top freshman from last season's recruiting class, Jamison arrived during the summer and make significant progress in learning the playbook. A lot is expected from him, but I believe that by the end of the season, we will know more about Mr. Jamison.

DT Joe Yeboah: Another top freshman recruit that Coach Barnett picked up last season, Yeboah showed his talents during spring practice and quickly worked his way into the starting role. Alongside fellow freshman DT Jack Jamison, the two could form one of the top defensive line tandems in the conference before the end of the year.

          Columbia State Key Games:
          Oct. 4 vs. Bismarck State
          Oct. 19 @ Manchester State
          Nov. 9 @ Alaska State
          Nov. 16 vs. Providence State
          Nov. 23 @ Vermont State

The Statesmen has perhaps the easiest schedule in the Big North with three FCS opponents to pad the win column. Their first true test will be against Bismarck State and South Dakota Tech in back-to-back weeks. Following a game against Vancouver State, the Statesmen face the top three teams in the conference in back-to-back-to-back weeks as they have to travel to Anchorage and South Burlington, while hosting the Titans.

With such an easy start to the season. I would expect to see the Statesmen with a 3-0 record heading into their game with Bismarck State. With two of the worst teams from the Western division on their schedule, I expect them to win at least five games.

          Players to look out for
QB Patrick Parks: One of the most anticipated recruits in recent Statesmen history, Parks was the first recruit that Coach Evans went after. After outplaying the previous starter, Parks was named the starter prior to the spring game. A lot will be expected of Parks, but I believe that he will eventually end the Statesmen's long post-season drought.

HB Devon Welch: Another of the top recruits that Coach Evans signed, Welch impressed the staff so much that they named him the starter before the spring game. An speedy back, Welch will be depended on to help Parks in establishing the offense. I expect him to have a good season.

MLB Dion Fuqua: The captain of the Statesmen defense, Fuqua will be the key to improving one of the worst defenses in the conference. While not as gifted as some of his contemporaries in the conference, Fuqua has the drive to be great. I think that he will do good, but I still believe that the defense will struggle.

          Delaware College Key Games:
          Sept. 28 vs. Billings State
Oct. 5 vs. South Dakota Tech
          Oct. 26 vs. Manchester State
          Nov. 16 @ Vermont State
          Nov. 23 vs. Providence State

Like the Statesmen, the Swedes start off with three games against FCS schools before facing their first tests as they face both Billings State and South Dakota Tech at home in back-to-back weeks. After a few tough games in October, November will be tough as the Swedes end the season against the top two teams in the Eastern division before facing rival Columbia State.

With a favorable start with two games against FCS opponents, things get kicked up a notch with back to back games against two of the top Western teams at home. With how the schedule shapes out, I wouldn't be surprised if the Hornets win 6 games.

          Players to look out for
HB Braylen Wright: The biggest recruit in Hornets history, Wright will be depended on to help spark the offense. A speedy back with quickness that few pure runners have, as well as the ability to catch the ball like a receiver, I expect Wright to be one of the leagues top rushers this season.

MLB Brodie Terrell The captain of the Swede defense, Holiday has started every game since arriving on campus. One of the few starters with experience, Holiday will be depended on to lead a very green defense that must improve if the Hornets expect to return to a bowl game.

          Manchester State Key Games:
          Oct 1 vs. Alaska State
          Nov. 2 vs. Vermont State
          Nov. 9 @ Providence State

The Kings, like some of the earlier teams face three FCS opponents to start the season. The rest of the schedule is very manageable as the Kings get two of their toughest games at home while only having to travel to Providence to take on the Titans. The Kings avoid Billings State and Bismarck State from the Western division, which helps matters.

With their first three games against FCS opponents, the Kings should be 3-0 heading into their game with South Dakota Tech and possibly 4-0 with a quick turnaround game against Alaska State. With the way their schedule turned out, I'm predicting at least 8 wins.

          Players to look out for
QB: Jamarcus Moss: The Kings new starter, Moss will be dependent on to get the team back on track after a disappointing season last year. The team's success will depend on how well Moss adapts to the offense.

TE Cody Cruise: The top recruit from last season, Cruise has worked his way into being the starter after a stellar spring practice. After seeing his high school videos, I have no doubt that he will be a star in this conference and could possibly be an early All-American this season.

MLB Jose Porter: The captain of the Kings defense, Porter is a player that has sacrificed a lot to play football. While his college career hasn't been what he thought it would be, I believe that he will still have a great season.

          Portland Tech Key Games:
          Oct. 12 @ Alaska State
          Nov. 2 vs. Providence State
          Nov. 9 @ Vermont State
          Nov. 23 @ Billings State

In what has become a familiar occurrence, the Owls face three FCS opponents to start the season. After these games and a game against Vancouver State, the Owls schedule gets tougher as they have to travel to Anchorage to take on the Bears. Following a stretch of manageable games, the Owls host the Titans and must travel to face the Timberwolves in games that could decide the Eastern Division title.

With their first four games against FCS opponents and Vancouver State, the Owls should be 4-0 heading into their game with Alaska State. With the Owls facing Alaska State, Billings State and Vermont State on the road and hosting Manchester State and Providence State, the rest of the schedule sets up for them to make a bowl game, despite the three FCS games. I expect eight wins.

          Players to look out for
QB Frankie Leonard: The top recruit from last season, Leonard has worked his way into being the new starter after beating out longtime backup Doug Powers. I believe that Leonard will help lead the Owls to many victories to come.

DT T.J. Pressley: The captain of the Owls defense, Pressley is hoping to build off of last season's performance where he was in the top five in terms of tackles. He leads a defense that needs to work on their run defense to compete with the top teams in the conference. I predict him to have another great season.

          Providence State Key Games:
          Sept. 25 vs. Alaska State
          Oct. 5 vs. Billings State
          Nov. 2 @ Portland Tech
          Nov. 30 @ Vermont State

Like many other BNC teams this season, the Titans play three cream puffs from the FCS before facing their first true challenge in Alaska State at the end of September. After facing off against Billings State at home, the Titans have a good stretch of games before facing Portland Tech on the road and traveling to Vermont State at the end of the regular season.

With their first three games looking easy, the Titans should head into the Alaska State game with a 3-0 record. Assuming they can get past the Bears, with the exception of games against the 49ers and Timberwolves, the Titans should be favored in every other game that they play. I predict them to win at least ten games.

          Players to look out for
QB: Alonzo Perez: Returning for his final season as the Titans starting quarterback, Perez has stated previously that he wants to redeem himself after failing to defeat Alaska State in the conference championship. Considered by some to be the best quarterback in the conference, I believe that he will have a great season in his final year.

HB Dontae Brown and WR Matthew King: The two freshmen were the top recruits from last year's class. Brown will see most of the carries this season after all-star running back Mac Stuckey graduated. Meanwhile, King, who is slated to be the top receiver, will see plenty of passes thrown his way as well as receiving kicks and punts. Look for both to make an immediate impact.

MLB Marcel Corbett: The captain of the Titans defense, Corbett has started every game in his career. Described by one NFL scout as the next Patrick Willis, Corbett wants to end his career as the best linebacker in Titans history. Look for him to do well this season.

          South Dakota Tech Key Games:
          Sept. 28 @ Manchester State
          Oct. 25 vs. Vermont State
          Nov. 9 @ Billings State
          Nov. 23 @ Alaska State

After facing three FCS schools to start the season, the Storm will travel to Manchester to face off against the Kings in the conference opener for both schoools. After a few manageable games, the schedule toughens up with games against the top three teams in the conference in a five game stretch, followed by "The Battle for Dakota" game against Bismarck State to end the season.

With Providence State off the schedule this year and with two of your three toughest games at home, the Storm have a slight chance to win the Western Division this season.. While playing the three of the top four teams in the conference is bad, the lack of Providence State helps. With this schedule, I predict seven wins.

          Players to look out for
QB: Jevon Matthews: Taking over from longtime starter Ikaika Pittman, Matthews became the starter after beating out three others during spring practice. A guy that can win the game with his legs as well as his arm, Matthews has a chance to continue the work that Pittman started years ago. I predict that his season will be great.

MLB Long: A three year starter, Long has been one of the top players in the conference on defense. His leadership has helped improve a defense that was at one point the worst in the conference. I believe that he will leave his mark on the team.

          Vancouver State Key Games:
          Oct. 5 @ Portland Tech
          Oct. 19 vs. Billings State
          Nov. 30 vs. Alaska State

After facing three FCS opponents, the Tigers must travel to Portland to take on the Owls. Two weeks later, the Tigers will host the 49ers before traveling to Victoria to take on the Islanders in "The Battle for British Columbia."

After a few manageable games, the Tigers end the regular season with games against South Dakota Tech, Bismarck State (away), and rival Alaska State.

One of the easiest schedules in the conference, the Tigers avoid Providence State and Vermont State, the only western division team to do so. The schedule sets up nicely for the Tigers and gives them a chance to go to their first bowl game. I predict the Tigers to win at least 6 games.

          Players to look out for
QB Vernon Parrish: The top recruit in Tiger history, Parrish impressed everyone at spring practice, so much so that he became the starter. With perhaps the easiest schedule in the conference this season,

MLB Troy Pope: The leader of the Tiger defense, Pope is their best defender. On a team that has possibly the worst defense in the conference, Pope is one of the few bright spots. Look for him to have an impact on defense as well as a good season.

          Vermont State Key Games:
          Oct 12 @ Billings State
          Nov. 2 @ Manchester State
          Nov. 9 vs. Portland Tech
          Nov. 30 vs. Providence State

The Timberwolves face two FCS opponents to start the season before facing Rice. After these games, their first real challenge will be in October when they travel to Billings to face the 49ers. Following road games against South Dakota Tech and Manchester State, the Timberwolves face Portland Tech before closing out the regular season against Columbia State, Delaware College, and Providence State.

With their easy schedule, the Timberwolves should be 4-0 heading into their game with Billings State. With one of the most favorable schedules (the only tough away games are Billings State, South Dakota Tech, and Manchester State while they host Providence State at home), I expect them to win at least 9 games.

          Players to look out for
QB: Jace Cooper: The new starter at quarterback, Cooper has had a lot of buzz around him. With a big frame with a strong arm to match, Cooper seems to be the right quarterback for this offense. I expect him to do well this season.

WR Matt Viselli One of the top recruits from this year's class, Viselli joins a crowded field of receivers. Although he is second behind senior Robin Brantley, he is expected to see a lot of targets come his way. I expect him to be among the team leaders in receptions, yards, and touchdowns.

OLB Kenyon Marks: One of the top recruits last season, Marks impressed the coaches during spring practice enough to become the starter. With excellent speed and great play recognition, I expect great things from Marks this season.

          Victoria State Key Games:
          Sept. 9 @ North Carolina
          Oct. 5 @ Vermont State
          Oct. 12 Providence State
          Oct. 19 @ Alaska State
          Nov 30 vs. Billings State

In a rebuilding year, the Islanders face North Carolina before facing two FCS opponents. The next several weeks will most likely cost the Islanders a chance at going to a bowl game as they face Vermont State, Providence State, and Alaska State in back-to-back-to-back weeks, followed by a game against rival Vancouver State. The Islanders will end the season at home against Billings State after dealing with tough matchups during November.

With a game against North Carolina on a Monday night to start the season, I expect the Islanders to win at least the two FCS games before starting the toughest conference schedule possible with three straight matchups against the top teams in the conference. I feel that the Islanders will only win 2 games, 3 at best.

          Players to look out for
HB: Kennedy Hudson: The biggest recruit in a long time, Hudson could be the player that Victoria State needs to lead them to victory. I believe that he will be one of the best players in the Big North this season.

MLB Gary Singletary: The captain of an Islander defense that ranked last in nearly every category last season, Singletary is one of the good players on that side of the ball. One thing that you can say about Singletary is that he never quits on plays, even when its over.

Here is the final depth chart determination for current CAP players:

          Bismarck State
          LE Jack Jamison:
          Starter
          DT Joe Yeboah: Starter

          Columbia State
          QB Patrick Parks: Starter
          HB Devon Welch: Starter

          Delaware College
          HB Braylen Wright
          : Starter

          Manchester State
          TE Cody Cruise:
          Starter

          Portland Tech
          QB Frankie Leonard:
          Starter

          Providence State
          HB Dontae Brown: Starter
          WR Matthew King: Starter

          Vancouver State
          QB Vernon Parrish:
          Starter

          Vermont State
          QB Jace Cooper: Starter
          WR Matt Viselli: Starter
          ROLB Kenyon Marks: Starter

          Victoria State
          HB Kennedy Hudson: Starter

As we get ready to start the football season, another season is already in full swing. That's right fans, it's time to look at recruiting.

With the season getting ready to start, here are the players that the Bears are targeting this season:

As you can see, the Bears are going hard after free safeties. With Hargrove and Mullins both graduating, the team needs at least two free safeties to help fill the void.

Another area of need is special teams. With the starting kicker graduating and the punter graduating next year, the Bears are targeting both a kicker and a punter. If either chooses to sign with the Bears, then they will most likely start right away, specifically the kicker.

As for the rest of the recruiting world, the top rated running back and the second highest ranked recruit for the 2013-2014 season is D.J. Porter from Old Orchid Beach, Maine. Porter, who is a very quick running back, has a few schools targeting him. His top four are Vermont State, Providence State, Boston College, and Pittsburgh.

Another recruit that is getting attention is wide receiver George Burns from Atlanta, GA. Burns, who is a very fast receiver, has several schools targeting him. His top 5 schools are Oklahoma, Texas A&M USC, West Virginia, and Clemson.

Another recruit that is getting a lot of attention is corner back Micheal Viselli from Phoenix, AZ. One of the fastest corners in this year's class, the top 5 schools that are recruting the four star corner are LSU, Florida, Auburn, Texas, and Alabama with Notre Dame showing interest as well.

One final recruit to watch for as well is strong safety Derek Fogarty from Notre Dame, IN. One of the best safeties in this year's class, the top 5 schools that are after the four star SS are Notre Dame, Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, and Georgia.

By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
              August 27, 2013 - 11:0 AM ET

With the season a couple of days away, there have been a lot of things that have happened during the off-season. Here are some of the top storylines that have occurred during the off-season.

              1) Conference Realignment Strikes Again

Another season, another series of conference realignment. Following the death of the WAC last season, the AAC met its premature end over the summer as the conference split up after plans to add new members failed. The conference that benefited the most? Conference USA, the conference that most of the schools in the AAC had been a part of in the past, welcomed back Cincinnati, Houston Louisville (who is still planning to leave to go to the ACC the following season), Memphis, SMU, and UCF to the fold.

With the influx of returning members, C-USA decided to cancel the memberships of Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee State, North Texas, and UTSA, of which the former three returned to the Sun Belt. Each school was paid an amount of money equaled to the amount that they would have gotten as members of C-USA.

As for UConn and Rutgers, they chose to remain independent (and in Rutgers case, remain there until the following year when it will join the Big Ten), while Temple rejoined the MAC.

While some programs dropped down to the FCS level, Idaho and New Mexico State, UAB, unfortunately decided to drop their program after plans to save it failed (or blocked).

With another year of realignment set for next year, it may be some time before the talk of realignment settles down.

              2) Can Alabama Repeat?

After destroying Notre Dame 42-14 in last year's National Championship game, Alabama is looking to three-peat as national champions. While the Crimson Tide return 6 starters on offense from last season's team, including QB A.J. McCarron, the core of their offensive line must be replaced. Meanwhile, all eleven starters on defense returns to a unit that had four shutouts. Can the Crimson Tide run the table again in the SEC or will another team deny them their chance to three-peat?

              3) New Coaches

This season, there will be 34 teams with a new head coach, including Gus Malzahn at Auburn, Mark Helfrich at Oregon, Bret Bielema at Arkansas, and Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech, the youngest coach at a BCS school. Will any of these coaches have the same success that oaches Bill O’Brien at Penn State and Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M had last season?

              4) Ending the SEC's Reign

With Alabama's win in the BCS Championship game, the SEC has now won seven straight BCS titles. As the new season approaches, the same question resurfaces. How long will the SEC's championship reign will last and more importantly, who will end it? I believe that a non-SEC team will win the title this season, thus ending the streak, but which team will it be?

(I have decided to sim this season to move things up. I will have a detailed report tomorrow or Monday).

                    Bowl Season Wrap-Up
Mason wins Heisman while BYU returns to glory

As we end another great college football season, let's recap the major storylines of the bowl season for the Big North as well as the rest of the college football landscape.

                    Mason wins the Heisman
Auburn running back Tre Mason beat out last year's Heisman trophy winner Johnny Manziel for the 2013 Heisman trophy. Mason, who won with 76% of the votes, rushed for 1812 yards on 300 carries and 22 rushing touchdowns as he led #7 Auburn to a 10-3 record. Georgia running back Todd Gurley, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, and Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller rounded out the Heisman hopefuls that were selected to attend the Heisman ceremony in New York.

                    BYU returns to glory
After moving up to #2 in the final regular season rankings after the conference championship games had been played, BYU proved to everyone that they were the best college team in America after a stunning 20-17 win against former #1 ranked Ohio State in the National Championship game. Behind a strong effort from Cougar quarterback Tayson Hill, BYU jumped out to a 13-0 lead at halftime before the Buckeyes, led by Braxton Miller, led a furious rally to take a 17-13 lead early in the fourth quarter.

But Hill would not be denied as he led a drive that ended with a 7 yard touchdown run by Hill to give the Cougars a 20-17 lead with less than two minutes to go in the game. The Cougar defense then did its part as Kyle Van Noy sacked Miller in the redzone on fourth down to seal the game for BYU.

As for the Big North, the conference went .500 in its bowl games, with both Alaska State and Vermont State winning their games. Here are the results from the bowl games:

2013-2014 Big North Bowl Game Scoreboard
                    Results
                    #13 Vermont State 31, #19 USC 28 (Rose Bowl)
Alaska State 35, San Jose State 13 (Poinsettia Bowl)
North Carolina 38, Providence State 20 (Belk Bowl)
Buffalo 38, Manchester State 31 OT (BBVA Compass Bowl)

For Vermont State, their win over USC not only gave them only their second-ever perfect season, but also their highest ever finish in school history at #6. Meanwhile, for Alaska State, this marked the third season in a row that they finished with at least 10 wins.

Here are the final rankings for the college football season:

Alaksa State equaled its win total from last season, but failed to win another title as they were defeated by Vermont State in the conference championship game. Following an early loss to then #19 Arizona State, the Bears won 10 out of their last 12 games to tie a school record for most wins. Despite the loss to the Timberwolves in the conference championship game, the Bears proved to be among the best teams in college football as well as one of the top three in the Big North.

The Bears, under new head coach Martel Goodwin, did not miss a beat, improving in conference wins as well as record. Under a strong offense and defence that ranked in the top third in the FBS, the Bears dominated on both sides of the ball. Behind first year starter Adrian Olsen and all-conference running back Mickey Newman, the offense was able to run at will at times against their opponents while the defense dominated most games with a quick pass rush that frustrated opposing quarterbacks at times.

Offensive MVP: Mickey Newman was the spark plug that got the offense running this season. Newman, who was in his first season as the starter, ran for over 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground, becoming only the third running back in Alaska State history to go over the 1,000 yard mark. Whenever the coach needed a spark, Newman delivered.

Defensive MVP: Freshman defensive end Zach Sims dominated the line this season. Despite finishing fifth in total tackles, he led the team with 18 tackles for loss, as well as 6.5 sacks. The NCAA All-Freshman team and Big North 1st team selection tied a school record for most sacks in a game with three and constantly harrassed opposing quarterbacks with his relentless ability to rush the line.

Best moment: Senior running back Markus Fitch's 59 yard touchdown run to seal the victory for Alaska State against Manchester State. With less than two minutes left in the game and after the Kings tied up the game following a 14 yard touchdown pass from JaMarcus Moss to tight end Cody Cruise, the Bears received the ball on their own 32 yard line following the kick. Two plays later, after avoiding two tackles in the backfiled, Fitch took off down the sidelines, avoiding two tackles en-route to his longest touchdown run as well as the game-winning score.

Worst moment: Olsen's pick-six in the conference championship game against Vermont State. The Bears were driving for what would have been the game-winning score, but an errant pass from Olsen was intercepted by Timberwolves free safety Roshawn Rucker, who took it 79 yards to give Vermont State a 27-17 win.

We're done with the 2013 college football season, so it's time to see how all 12 Big North teams finished the year in our final set of conference power rankings. It was a collaborative effort on our side, and we think it jibes pretty well:

                        1. Vermont State (14-0, 10-0 BNC; Last Ranking: 1): The Timberwolves not only managed to win their first conference title since 2011, they also managed to win the most games in school history. The Timberwolves managed to finish ranked #6 in the final Coaches Poll despite not being ranked to begin the season. With a youthful team and only a few seniors graduating, Vermont State will most likely be the team to beat next season.

                        2. Alaska State (11-3, 8-2 BNC; LR: 2): The Bears won 11 games for the second year in a row and also won its third-straight bowl game following a 35-13 win over San Jose State. Senior quarterback Adrian Olsen made up for his costly pick-six against Vermont State witha 347 yard, 3 touchdown performance in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl against San Jose State. Coach Martel Goodwin impressed in his coaching debut after being an assistant for the Bears the last two seasons.

                        3. Providence State (10-3, 7-2 BNC; LR: 3): The Titans started off 3-0 behind a horrible schedule before losing their first game to Alaska State 27-17. The Titans then rallied off seven straight wins before losing their last two games against bitter rival Vermont State and #20 North Carolina in the Belk Bowl. Despite an injury to senior starter Alonzo Perez in an overtime win against Manchester State, the Titans still managed to win ten games for the fourth-straight season.

                        4. Manchester State (8-5, 5-4 BNC; LR: 4): The Kings became one of the most improved teams this season as they won eight games and managed to break a two year bowl drought. Behind the arm of sophomore quarterback JaMarcus Moss and their All-American and All-Big North first team tight end Cody Cruise, the Kings were among the top teams in offense. Despite the good season, the Kings only managed to beat only one team with a winning record, Delaware College, and lost to Buffalo in the BBVA Compass Bowl 38-31/

                        5. Billings State (6-6, 5-4 BNC; LR: 5): What looked like a disaster of a season ended with four consecutive wins, including wins over rivals Bismarck State and South Dakota Tech. With starting quarterback Austin Chase going down to injury against Delaware College, the 49ers lost four straight, inlcuding an upsetting loss to Vancouver State. The season ended on a somewhat high note as the 49ers avoided having their first losing season since 1996 by wining their last four games by an average of seven points.

                        6. Delaware College (7-5, 5-4 BNC; LR: 6): One of the most improved teams in the Big North, the Swedes went from three wins last season to seven this season. Led by freshman running back Braylen Wright, who was having a great season before tearing his pectoral muscle against Manchester State, the Swedes overcame a slow start to the season to post their first winning season in four years. Coach Travis Phillips did an impressive job with Delaware State this season in his first season as head coach.

                        7. Bismarck State (7-5, 4-5 BNC; LR: 7): What started as a promising season hit a bit of a snag in October before the Rough Riders defeated Victoria State to stop the slide. Following a horrible loss to Alaska State, the Rough Riders won their last two games to end above .500 for the first time in three years. Quarterback Alex Robison's injury during their loss to Delaware College costed the Rough Riders a possible bowl game as they were unable to immediately adjust. With most everyone coming back, I expect the Rough Riders to make some noise in the western division.

                        8. Portland Tech (6-6, 3-6 BNC; LR: 8): After an impressive 5-0 start, capped off by a thrilling 20-17 overtime win against eventual West Division champion Alaksa State, the Owls lost six of their final seven games to end up at .500. Quarterback Frankie Leonard did well before his late season injury forced him to miss the last three games of the season.

                        9. Columbia State (4-8, 3-6 BNC; LR: 9): It was a tough first season for Carl Evans in D.C. as the Statesmen failed to find any consistency all season. The offense struggled at times during the season, and the defense had trouble stopping the top teams in the conference. The Statesmen must now help their quarterback Patrick Parks by bringing him more weapons, such as fellow freshman running back Devon Welch, on both sides of the ball to fit Evans' system.

                        10. South Dakota Tech (4-8, 2-7 BNC; LR: 10): A year after finishing 8-5, South Dakota Tech was one of the biggest disappointments in the Big North this season, finishing at a dismal 4-8 with wins over both Canadian schools as their only wins in conference play. The Storm season never really got off the ground after starting the season 2-6 and spliting the remaining games. Jevon Matthews looked lost at times during the season, something that the Storm must work on in order to challenge the top teams in the Big North next season.

                        11. Victoria State (4-8, 2-7 BNC; LR: 11): After a poor season last year, the Islanders managed to win three more games this season, which helped to save Islanders coach Robert Taylor's job. Running back Kennedy Hudson was fourth in total rushing yards for the conference as he was one of the few positive signs for Victoria State, which managed to defeat Vancouver State and steal a victory on the road against Portland Tech.

                        12. Vancouver State (4-8, 1-8 BNC; LR: 12): A season that started with promise quickly ended with heartbreak as freshman starting quarterback Vernon Parrish went down with an injury in the second game of the season. Without him, the Tigers went 2-10, as they managed to get a rare victory against Billings State at home for their only conference win.

Here are the final conferece standings for the Big North:

Arnold, Tate highlight great signing class

After having one of the best seasons in team history, Alaska State followed up on National Signing Day with a top twenty recruiting class. 4-star tackle Greg Tate (South Tuscon, AZ) and 4-star running back Ricky Larsen (Kodiak, AK)are among the 19 players that the Bears signed to their class yesterday, which is ranked 19th in the nation one spot behind Big North champion Vermont State.

This class is easily the best that Alaska State has signed in its history. Coach Martel Goodwin's skill as a recruiter has come into play as he not only managed to sign the players that he needed, he also added depth to positions that needed it such as the offensive line and the secondary.

While the majority of the recruits aren't expected to start, many of them will be able to contribute right away, such as 3-star kicker Mark Smith (Casa de Oro, CA), who will be taking over the kicking duties of former kicker Thad McGee, and 3-star athlete Kevin Lawson (Palm Harbor, FL), who is expected to be the starter at free safety following the departure of long-time starter DeMario Hargove.

Seminoles, Sooners dominate National Signing Day

After starting the season ranked as the top team, Florida State failed to reach its goal of a national championship. On National Signing Day, however, the Seminoles managed to put together the best recruiting class in the country as Florida State assumes the are assured of the top spot in the ESPN Recruiting Nation final team rankings. Coach Jimbo Fisher has once again put together a strong recruiting class that will no doubt help them to get closer to a national championship.

Following behind the Seminoles are the Sooners, who managed to steal wide receiver George Burns away from Clemson, Ohio State, who managed to sign the top recruit in the country in athlete Dave Harris, Georgia, and Alabama who round out the top five.

The SEC once again showed that they are among the best in recruiting as they have four schools in the top ten and five in the top twenty five. Another conference that made a great showing was the Big North, which had three teams make an appearance in the top twenty five, highlighted by Big North champion Vermont State, which managed to sign running back D.J. Porter, the second ranked prospect, away from Boston College late in the season following their undefeated season.

Here are the final rankings from National Signing Day:
