Re: Rebirth of the Big North Conference (BNC): A CAP Simulation Dynasty

What we learned in the BNC: Week 4
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
    Sept 21, 2013 - 9:00 AM ET

With the season starting for most of the Big North, I've looked at the results of yesterday's games and came up with the following conclusions:

    1. Bears dominate Titans again: Coming off of a bye week, Alaska State started off slow against Providence State, but was able to dominate the second half, en-route to a 41-14 win. Mickey Newman continues his dominace against the Titans, this time behind a 36 carry, 168 yard performance along with 2 touchdowns. Von Hawthorne continues to improve, going 18 of 23 for 181 yards and a touchdown with no picks or sacks. The defense also finally managed to force an interception for their first takeaway of the season. Next week's game against Vermont State should be one of the best games of the season.

    2. Manchester State no longer on Cruise control: After coming off of an excellent freshman campaign, Kings tight end Cody Cruise has not been able to repeat the success he had last season. Whether other teams have figured him out or JaMarcus Moss has regressed some, one thing is certain. The Kings are not the smae team when Cruise is taken out of the equation. While Moss had a great game, the lack of targets to Cruise has hurt the Kings chances to win. With a tough slate ahead, the Kings must figure a way to get Cruise more involved in the offense if they want to return to a bowl game.

    3. Non-conference embarrassment: For the second week in a row, the conference failed to pick up an important win. Vermont State had a chance against #6 Ole Miss in the second half, but two costly interceptions by Jace Cooper did in the Timberwolves. Meanwhile, Columbia State failed to show up in Tuscaloosa, Portalnd Tech lost "The Battle of the Owls", and Bismarck State lost thanks to a last-minute score by Iowa State. If the conference wants to be taken seriously, they must win the big games and avoid losing close games.

    4. More disappointment for Evans, White: Yesterday saw both Columbia State and Billings State suffer horrible losses. The Statesmen was no match for the 2nd ranked Crimson Tide, being shutout for the second time in two years, while the 49ers lost their conference opener for the first time since 1999 to a team that dominated last season.

With both teams playing each other this week and each coming into the game 0-3, this game could be seen as an elimination game for both teams.

    5. Swedes, Islanders get important wins: Both Delaware College and Victoria State, the two biggest surprises of the season so far, once again won key games yesterday. The Islanders, who traied Buffalo at one point 24-7, rallied to not only force overtime, but managed to win thanks to a pick six on the first play in overtime.

Meanwhile, the Swedes dominated the 49ers in their conference opener. Holding the 49ers to 3 points, the Swedes defense is shaping to be one of the best in their long history.

With a showdown next week, both teams will come in with a chance to get to three wins to start the season.

Now that we talked about yesterday's games, let's look at the key games this weekend.

#16 Alaska State vs. Vermont State (3:30 PM EDT on ESPN) - The rematch of last season's Big North Championship happens this week as the #16 Bears travel once again to South Burlington to take on a Timberwolves team that is hurting after a loss to #6 Ole Miss. While the Bears seek to avenge their defeat in the conference championship game, the Timberwolves will look to win their 16th game in their last 17 games.

Victoria State vs. Delaware College (3:30 PM EDT on BNN) - A matchup of the two surprising teams in the Big North, both the Islanders and Swedes have a chance to earn a key victory Saturday. This should be a great game with the top defense in the country facing off against a team that has shown an ability to fight back when down. Whoever wins will have a chance to have a great season with the Swedes having a chance to start off 2-0 in conference play for the first time in 10 years.

Billings State vs. Columbia State (6:00 PM EDT on ESPNU) - Dubbed "The Battle of Losers" by the Washington Post, whoever wins this game will get a reprieve from the hotseat for a week. With both teams playing terrible, this could be a high-scoring game. Whichever team shows up will earn their first win while the loser will be staring at an 0-4 start to the season.

Here is this week's schedule of games for the conference:

    Big North Week 5 Schedule
    Results
#16 Alaska State @ Vermont State (3:30 PM EDT on ESPN)
Victoria State @ Delaware College (3:30 PM EDT on BNN)
South Dakota Tech @ Portland Tech (3:30 PM EDT on ESPNU)
Bismarck State @ Manchester State (6:00 PM EDT on ESPN 2)
Billings State @ Columbia State (6:00 PM EDT on ESPNU)
Vancouver State @ Providence State (8:00 PM EDT on BNN)

Let's now look at this week's Big North Power Rankings:

Big North Power Rankings: Week 4
    1) (LW: 1) Alaska State (3-0, 1-0 BN) -
After a week of rest and practice, the Bears took care of business against Providence State 41-14. Mickey Newman continues to improve his draft stock as he rushed for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns while the defense managed to get their first takeaway of the season. This week, they will travel to South Burlington to seek revenge against Vermont State.

    2) (LW: T2) Providence State (2-1, 0-1) - After looking impressive against Memphis, the Titans faltered once again against the Bears as they fell 41-14. The Titans key weapons, Dontae Brown and Matthew King were held in check for the most part while the defense was unable to stop the run. Next week, I expect the Titans to return to form as they face off against Vancouver State.

    3) (LW: T2) Vermont State (1-1, 0-0) - Despite coming off of a bye and being at home, the Timberwolves failed to stop Bo Wallace and the #6 Rebels from winning 52-23. Jace Cooper's two interceptions led to 14 Rebel points while Bo Wallace could do no wrong against the Timberwolves defense. Things don't get easier as #16 Alaska State comes to town.

    4) (LW: 5) Delaware College (2-1, 1-0) - After losing a close game to Northwestern, the Swedes took out their frustration on the 49ers by defeating them 27-3 a year after losing to them 45-13. With the nation's best defense and an offense that is more than capable to scoring, the Swedes are a team to be feared. The Swedes will look to go 3-1 and 2-0 in conference play when they host Victoria State Saturday.

    5) (LW: 4) Manchester State (1-2, 0-1) - After defeating San Jose State, the Kings lose to South Dakota Tech in a game that got away from the Kings in the second quarter. Cody Cruise has yet to duplicate the feats that made him a household name this year, JaMarcus Moss seemed to regressed some, and the defense has regressed as the team lost all of the momentum that was gained last season.

    6) (LW: 8) Victoria State (2-0, 0-0) - The Islanders were able to defeat Buffalo 33-27 in overtime thanks to a pick-six on the Bulls first possession of overtime. One of the surprising teams, the Islanders have so far exceeded expectations. Their next game against Delaware College will see how far they have truly come as a program.

    7) (LW: 9) South Dakota Tech (1-1, 1-0) - After a rough loss to start the season, the Storm managed to get their first win of the season after defeating Manchester State 34-17. Jevon Matthews played one of his best games of his career while the defense held star tight end Cody Cruise below his career average in the win. Next, the Storm will face Portland Tech.

    8) (LW: 7) Bismarck State (0-2, 0-0) - Following a bye week, the Rough Riders gave Iowa State all they could handle before losing 28-26. Once again the dynamic duo of Jack Jamison and Joe Yeboah did a lot of damage (17 Tackles, 11 TFL, 4.5 sacks and a fumble) between them. Once again, however, it was the defense that failed to deliver when needed the most, turning the ball over three times, the final one giving the Cyclones the chance to win the game. Bismarck State must now face Manchester State, who is also coming off a bad loss.

    9) (LW: 9) Portland Tech (1-2, 0-0) - The Owls suffered another bad lost, this time at the hands of Rice. Portland Tech continues to struggle as the Owls keep turning the ball over way too much. Quarterback Frankie Leonard must be more accurate with his passes if the team wants to had a winning record. The Owls will next host South Dakota Tech.

    10) (LW: 6) Billings State (0-3, 0-1) - The 49ers continue to struggle as they lose to a very impressive Delaware College team 27-3. Marty Gonzales continues to struggle and the defense is doing little to give the offense the chance to win. The team must show some fight next week against Columbia State or their season will be over.

    11) (LW: 11) Columbia State (0-3, 0-0) - Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, it did yesterday as the Statesmen were shutout against the Crimson Tide 37-0. Despite not turning the ball over, the offense continued to struggle and the defense was non-existant. Like the 49ers, next week's game is crucial for Coach Evans and his staff if they want to remain in DC next season.

    12) (LW: 12) Vancouver State (0-2, 0-0) - After a bye week, the Tigers will have their hands full as they travel to Providence to take on a Titans team that was embarrassed yesterday.

As we did last weekend, let's look at the three recruits that we discussed to see where they stand.

First is the top recruit in the country, J. W. Greyvenstein. It appears that Greyvenstein will be attending Alaska State's homecoming game against Billings State as he and several other recruits will be on hand. Alaska State has a clear edge on Michigan, the only other school to offer Greyvenstein a scholarship.

*Alaska State - Leader (60% Lock)
    *Michigan - 2,235

It is looking more and more likely that quarterback Jerrod Pope will sign his LoI with Arizona State. According to his high school coaches, it appears that he is heavily leaning toward signing with the Sun Devils as soon as possible. Michigan and BYU are the only other schools that he has shown interest to, but in reality, he will be a Sun Devil.

*Arizona State - Leader (58% Lock)
    Michigan - 3,015 behind
    BYU - 3,105 behind

Since last week's report, not much has changed as BYU remains the top school on wide receiver Andre Howe's list, with Oregon, California, Alabama, and Texas A&M close behind. No school has offered him, but I'm sure that will change as the season progresses.

    BYU - Leader (18% Locked)
    Oregon - 234 behind
    California - 284 behind
    Alabama - 324 behind
    Texas A&M - 420 behind

    * Denotes scholarship offer

Looking back at last week's Top 25 games, most of the top 25 teams in the nation won their games while a couple suffered bad losses to rivals or conference foes. Let's look at the scores from the weekend:

      Top 25 Scoreboard Week 4
      Results
      #2 Alabama 37, Columbia State 0
      #4 Georgia 42, Arkansas 17

      #23 USC 35, Oregon State 30
      #24 Oklahoma 33, Tulsa 7

As you can see, eight ranked teams lost, highlighted by #19 Missouri once again losing, this time to New Mexico. Other bad losses included Georgia Tech's loss to Utah State, and Michigan State's baffling loss at home to Wyoming.

Now let's look at the new coaches poll that came out today:

Dropped Out: Michigan State (#13), Missouri (#19), Tennessee (#20), and Iowa (#25)

The SEC dominates the top of the list again as four of the top five teams hail from the conference. That won't be the case after this week when #5 Ole Miss takes on #2 Alabama in a battle of Top 5 opponents.

All three Utah schools enter the list, with BYU returning after a two week absence. Boston College also enters the list for the first time at 24.

Iowa, Michigan State, Missouri, and Tennessee all fall out of the Top 25 after losing yesterday.

After five weeks, a new player is on top of the Heisman Watch list as Todd Gurley has passed Johnny Manziel following a 150 yard, 3 touchdown performance against Arkansas. Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace continues his good run, going nearly flawless against Vermont State (25-30 for 219 yards, 21 carries for 98 yards, and 3 total touchdowns) in a 52-23 victory.

Manziel struggled a little against Auburn, but still had a good game (13-22 for 185 yards and 3 touchdowns) while Blake Sims looked bad against Columbia State (9-20 for 138 yards and two touchdowns).

A new candidate joins the list as Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston had yet another great performance against North Carolina (13-19 for 213 Yards, 20 carries for 75 yards and 4 total touchdowns) as the Seminoles won in a 45-36 shootout.

        Game Notes
#16 Alaska State (84/88/83) vs. Vermont State (81/83/82)

After an impressive win over Providence State in their home opener, Alaska State must once again hit the road, this time to face a team that has had the Bears number as of late, the Vermont State Timberwolves. The Timberwolves have won the last two meetings by an average of 10 points, including a 27-17 victory over the Bears in the Big North Conference Championship game last season.

Following an embarrassment against #5 Ole Miss last Friday, Vermont State will look to have a better game from quarterback Jace Cooper, who threw two picks that accounted for 14 Rebel points, as well as a defense that gave up over 500 total yards to the Rebels. I expect the Timberwolves to attack the Bears on the ground to help get Cooper going against a Bears defense that has, for the most part, been solid. On the defensive side of the ball, the Timberwolves must slow down Bears running back Mickey Newman, who is looking to increase his streak of 100+ rushing yards to three.

For the Bears, Von Hawthorne continues to impress as he had a decent game against the Titans. Coming into this game, he has yet to have a turnover, something he must continue to do against an opportunistic defense that is better than their stats show. With the Timberwolves focusing on stopping Newman, I believe that it will be up to Hawthorne to keep the defense honest, which should make things easier for Newman against an aggressive defense.

          Week 5 BNC Predictions
Dan Moore and Jamie Choi - ESPN BNC Bloggers
          Sept 25, 2014 - 11:00 AM EDT

Thanks to picking Ole Miss, I've managed to tie Jamie in the overall rankings. That being said, going 5-3 in picks is not something to be bragging about.

With conference play in full swing, let's look at the games this week.

          #16 Alaska State (3-0, 1-0) @ Vermont State (1-1, 0-0)

Choi: The biggest game on the schedule has finally arrived and I'm anxious to see if the Bears have what it takes to win. The Bears have all of the momentum, but if this season has taught us anything, no team is unbeatable. Despite losing a lot of starters on the defensive side of the ball, the Timberwolves still has a good offense and a defense looking to redeem themselves after being run-over by a strong Ole Miss team. Despite what I have seen from the Bears, I believe that the home-field advantage will be the deciding factor as the Timberwolves win a close game 24-21.

Moore: Not so fast, my friend. I believe that the Bears will win this game. Unlike the Timberwolves, the Bears return most of their starters from last season's team. The Bears will get their revenge, thanks to the very capable Mickey Newman. I'm picking the Bears to win 27-20.

          Victoria State @ Delaware College

          Choi:
Both teams come into the matchup with impressive wins. One of the best offenses in the conference tangles with the nation's top defense in a game that will be sure to entertain everyone. With both teams looking to get a bowl game, I see this game coming down to the wire. I'm picking the Swedes to win 28-21.

Moore: I agree with you on this one, Jamie. The Swedes have perhaps the best defense in the country, while the Islanders have one of the best offenses in the conference, led by Kennedy Hudson, one of the best backs in the conference. This game will come down to who has the ball last. I believe that the Swedes will win on a go-ahead field goal 27-24.

          Billings State @ Columbia State

          Choi:
With both teams getting embarrassed last week, this game pits two winless teams against each other in a critical game for both squads. Whoever wins the game, will most likely be able to save their season while the loser will most likely finish with a losing record. I know that I'm picking the home team, but I feel that the Statesmen, after last week's dismal performance, will give their fans a well-needed win 28-24.

Moore: An interesting pick. This is a tough game for me to pick due to how both teams have played so far. It has been hard to read bot teams this season as both has gone into the tank. Of the two teams, I feel that Columbia State at least has some plan as to what to do this season, so I'll pick them to win this game 23-19.

Consensus picks: South Dakota Tech over Portland Tech, Bismarck State over Manchester State, and Providence State over Vancouver State.

          Current standings
          Choi: 22-6
          Moore: 22-6

Avery kicked a 26-yard field goal with 20 seconds remaining and Vermont State pulled off an impressive victory 24-21 over #16 Alaska State.

Jace Cooper was 28 of 36 for 328 yards and a touchdown, Matt Viselli had 4 catches for 101 yards and a two-point conversion catch, and D.J. Porter ran 31 times for 57 yards and a score as the Timberwolves (2-1, 1-0 Big North) dominated the Bears for most of the game.

Von Hawthorne went 22 of 35 for 282 yards and two touchdowns, Michell McGill had 8 catches for a career high 172 yards and a touchdown, and Mickey Newman ran 17 times for 64 yards and a score as the Bears (3-1, 1-1) had trouble moving the ball at times during the game. Hawthorne also had two costly turnovers that led to points for the Timberwolves and was also sacked seven times in the loss.

"We just weren't able to get going and it cost us in the end," an upset coach Martel Goodwin told reporters after the loss. "We had our chances, but in the end, they were the better team today."

The beginning of the game was slow-going for the Bears as they only had 31 yards total in the first quarter. The Timberwolves defense showed up in a big way in the first quarter as they managed to take Hawthorne down 3 times in the first quarter.

The Timberwolves struck first following an three-and-out by the Bears offense. Avery connected on a 24 yard field goal to give Vermont State a 3-0 lead that lasted through the end of the quarter.

Despite the Timberwolves dominance in the first quarter and a half, they were only able to get six points after Avery missed two of his three attempts in the quarter.

With neither team doing much offensively, the Bears offense finally showed life after Hawthorne connected with an open McGill down the sideline to give the Bears a 7-6 lead with a little more thatn three minutes to go in the half.

Following a couple of three-and-outs by both teams, Alaska State final drive almost ended in disaster when it appeared that Newman fumbled the ball on the Vermont State 36 yard line after trying to gain extra yards. After originally calling it a fumble, the referees overturned the call following a challenge by Goodwin. On the next play, which turned out to be the final play of the half, Hawthorne managed to once again connect with McGill on a 36 yard pass that gave the Bears a 14-6 halftime lead.

In the second half, momentum began to shift back to Vermont State after defensive lineman Gary Vandermeulen sacked Hawthorne, who then fumbled the football. After recovering the football, the Timberwolves tied the game up following a pass from Cooper to Doug Crenshaw in the endzone and a two-point conversion from Cooper to Viselli.

Following an interception by Hawthorne, the Timberwolves struck again as Joseph ran into the endzone from a yard out to give them their first lead since midday through the second quarter.

With time becoming a factor, Hawthorne guided his team down the field. With more than three minutes left in the game, Newman ran in from three yards out to tie the game up at 21.

On the ensuring drive, Cooper led his team down the field, picking up critical third downs with both his feet and his arm. With time winding down, the Timberwolves managed to get into the redzone with less than a minute left to play.

Despite the Bears attempting to freeze the kicker, Avery, unfazed, kicked in the game-winner straight down the middle with ease, giving Vermont State a 24-21 lead with 20 seconds left.

With one last chance, Hawthorne managed to get his team inside Timberwolves territory before failing to convert on his last three passes to end the game.

Big North Conference Review: Week 5
By Dan Moore - ESPN BNC Blogger and Host of the Dan Moore Show
              September 28, 2013 - 8:00 AM ET

Looking back on yesterday's action across the Big North Conference, let's look at what happened:

Big North Conference Week 5 Scoreboard
              Results
              Vermont State 24, #16 Alaska State 21
Delaware College 28, Victoria State 23
South Dakota Tech 37, Portland Tech 3
Bismarck State 38, Manchester State 35
Columbia State 27, Billings State 24
Providence State 45, Vancouver State 10

The big story yesterday was Vermont State bouncing back from their loss to Ole Miss with a victory over previously undefeated Alaska State at home. The Timberwolves defense held the Bears well below their averages in points, rushing yards, and total yards. Meanwhile, the Bears inability to deal with dual-threat quarterbacks finally cost them as they were unable at times to stop key runs late in the game.

Another interesting game was Delaware's impressive 28-23 victory over Victoria State. Despite both teams combining for 5 turnovers, the Swedes defense, the nation's top defense, was able to withstand a late charge by the Islanders to win their third game of the season. Both teams are much improved from last season and could play spoilers for the top teams in the conference.

Finally, it seems that Billings State's season is over following a tough 27-24 loss to Columbia State in a game that bot teams needed to win. With the win, the Statesmen have a chance to turn things around while the 49ers are most likely heading for their first losing season in years.
