      Injuries Slow Down Packers

With their starting corners already out of action, Green Bay also lost the services of Julius Peppers and Brian Cushing during this week’s game versus the Dolphins. Also on the injury list are fellow defenders B.J. Raji and Datone Jones, o-linemen J.C. Tretter, Corey Linsley and Lane Taylor, and receiver Jarrett Boykin. With their ranks so depleted, the Pack was finally ousted from the ranks of the unbeaten in a 16-13 loss, leaving the surprising New York Giants as the NFL’s lone remaining undfeated team. But, speaking of the G-Men...

      G-Mens’ Streak In Jeopardy (?)

Eli Manning has been injured for the second time this season, and this time he’s expected to miss more than one game- it’s going to be a month or so before he sees the field again. Back in Week 5, the Giants were able to remain unbeaten by defeating the Falcons 28-10 with Ryan Nassib at the helm. In that game, Nassib posted a 103.3 rating against a shoddy Atlanta defense, completing 32 of 41 passes for 341 yards and 4 TD’s, but with 3 picks. Overall, Nassib’s rating is 95.0 with 5 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, and his completion percentage of 78 (71/91) is the highest of any QB who has thrown at least as many passes as he has. Manning’s absence may be less of a concern than the injuries in the offensive line- Geoff Schwartz, going on IR with a foot stress fracture, has joined James Brewer and Adam Snyder on New York’s injury list. The Giants’ medical situation has spawned a spate of transactions. Mr. Irrelevant 2012, Chandler Harnish, has been signed to back up Nassib while Manning mends, and o-linemen Reid Fragel and Uche Nwaneri have been added to the roster. To make room for them, Peyton Hillis and rookie corner Bennett Jackson were released.

I'm enjoying it so much it's hard to go back to the lower-res graphics on the 3/360. I've had to tweak the sliders a bit though and they are still somewhat a WIP. I was expecting that with the platform change though.

I'll have to tell Beast Mode to leave him some short yardage situations.

              Freeman-Fueled Rally Falls Short

All the Seattle Seahawks needed to defeat the St. Louis Rams was a merely adequate performance by quarterback Russell Wilson. But what they got was another tanked game from Wilson, who was yanked in favor of Josh Freeman for the second time this season, and their third loss of 2014. Prior to his exit, Wilson threw 3 interceptions, including another pick-six, yet the Seahawks ultimately lost by only 2 points, 21-19, when a Freeman-led rally came a failed two point conversion short of probably forcing overtime.

With the game beginning with an exchange of punts, a 19 yard return by Mike Thomas put the ball at the St. Louis 41. From there Robert Turbin took the rock to the house, but the Seahawks were denied first blood by a holding call assessed to Doug Baldwin. A turnover was avoided when Paul Richardson recovered a fumble forced when Derrick Coleman got walloped by Alex Ogletree at the end of a 10 yard reception, but Wilson was picked off in the end zone by Trumaine Johnson, who ran the ball out to the 26. The Rams followed with a 3 and out when Shaun Hill’s first completion in 6 attempts left them in a 4th and 3, but on the first play after the punt Wilson was intercepted by Janoris Jenkins, whose return gave the Rams the ball at the Seattle 23. To make matters worse, left tackle Russell Okung suffered an elbow injury which will need to undergo further evaluation. He definitely will not be suiting up at Carolina next week. St. Louis, however, failed to convert, with a Bobby Wagner sack taking the Rams out of field goal range.

First blood was finally drawn with only 5:41 remaining in the half, when Hill tossed a 4 yard TD pass to Tavon Austin. Three plays after the kickoff, Wilson’s third interception was taken to the barn by James Laurinitis. The ‘Hawks were suddenly down 14-0, and Wilson was going to be a spectator for the remainder of the day. Freeman’s first series was a touchdown drive, with Christine Michel scoring from 3 yards out a play after a 6 yard run by Robert Turbin.

To open the second half, Freeman directed the ‘Hawks to a 22 yard field goal, kicked after Coleman got a yard on 3rd and 2. After a St. Louis three and out, Seattle marched to another field goal, cutting the deficit to 14-13. The Rams, though, responded with a touchdown drive capped by Tre Mason’s 5 yard run with 10:22 to go. At the 2 minute warning the Seahawks were in a a 4th and goal at the 3 that was a potential last-chance situation. Freeman was unable to get off a pass before being sacked, but thanks to the defense turning in another three and out, the ‘Hawks weren’t done just yet. They even had a time out left because Mason had let himself get shoved out of bounds on third down. An 11 yard reception by Zach Miller plus a facemask penalty put Seattle in a 1st and goal at the 3 with the clock reading 1:00. Marshawn Lynch scored on the next play putting thr Seahawks in position to tie. Freeman connected with Baldwin, but short of goal line, and Baldwin was stopped short of the end zone. With the onside kickoff also unsuccessful, all that was left was for the Rams to run out the clock to a surprising record of 5-1, 2 games ahead of the Seahawks, who may now have a quarterback conundrum.

Kam Chancellor recorded a sack on the first play from scrimmage.

Marshawn Lynch’s 3 yard TD with less than a minute to go gave Seattle a chance to force OT.

                  Carroll's Conundrum

After a three-pick nightmare, Russell Wilson’s QB rating has sagged to 55.1, the lowest of any starter in the NFL, and with zero TD tosses in the Seahawks’ loss to the Rams, he has now thrown more than twice as many interceptions than touchdowns. Pete Carroll has stated earlier this week that “Russ is still our quarterback for the long haul”, but his remarks were couched in terms that may have left him a short-term out. He said “We’re going to get this worked out”, but in the meantime, how much playing time will (or should) Josh Freeman see. After nearly leading the 'Hawks to overtime, Freeman has elevated his rating to 112.1, with his aggregate stat line essentially amounting to one good game- 26-of-34 for 298 yards and a TD. At 3-3, the Seahawks can ill-afford a loss at Carolina (4-3) this Sunday, and perhaps the biggest task for Carroll and OC Darrell Bevell this week is to decide whether to stay the course with a struggling Wilson or go with who has the hot hand right now.

                    Game Notes
With their season at a 3-3 crossroads, the Seahawks travel to Charlotte to take on a 4-3 Carolina team that is chasing the unbeaten Saints in the NFC South. Pete Carroll has kept mum as to who is going to start under center in the wake of last week's loss at St. Louis, but we do know that Josh Freeman has split reps with Russell Wilson in this week's practices.

                      Scat, Cats!

Russ Roars Back From Benching, ‘Hawks Rout Panthers

As a game-day scratch, Russell Wilson watched Josh Freeman lead the Seattle Seahawks to a 21-14 halftime lead over the Carolina Panthers. And while Freeman had completed 10 of 17 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown, he had also been picked off twice, preventing the ‘Hawks from holding a larger lead at the break. And thus Wilson’s benching was only for that first half. In his first series since being yanked in favor of Freeman in last week’s loss to the Rams, Wilson led the Seahawks to a lead-stretching field goal, and later threw a pair of fourth quarter TD passes as Seattle overwhelmed Carolina, 45-17. Although he only made 6 attempts in the game’s final 30 minutes, Wilson was spot-on with each pass, completing them all. On a side note, with a back flare-up sending NFL rushing leader Marshawn Lynch into “Least Mode”, Robert Turbin stepped up with 98 yards and a TD on 18 carries for an average of 5.4 yards per attempt.

Mike Thomas took the opening kickoff to the Carolina 48, but after Lynch went for only a yard, Kevin Norwood and Zach Miller dropped Freeman passes and the Seahawks had to punt. Jeremy Lane downed the kick at the 5. A Bobby Wagner sack led to a three and out, but on the first play after the punt Freeman was picked off at the Seattle 44 by Like Kuechly. With a 13 yard scramble by Cam Newton and a facemask flag assessed to Wagner on a catch by Jerome Simpson, the Panthers reached a 1st and goal at the 7, and Jonathan Stewart scored on the next play to give the Panthers first blood. The score remained 7-0 until the Seahawks finally got on the board with 10:36 remaining in the half, with a 1 yard Christine Michael run set up by Freeman’s 8 yard scramble. A holding call on the kickoff return and a false start put Carolina in a 1st and 15 at the 9, and the Panthers went 3 and out. When Freeman was face-masked in scrambling for a first down, the Seahawks had their own 1st and goal at the 7, and on the following play Freeman hit rookie Paul Richardson for a go-ahead touchdown. Another kickoff return penalty put the Panthers in another drive-opening hole which got deeper with sacks by Brandon Mebane and Michael Bennett, and the Seahawks followed the 3 and out with a touchdown drive capped by Michael’s 8 yard TD run with an airborne finish. Carolina’s next series ended with a pick by Richard Sherman at the Panther 47, but Freeman was sacked twice, with the second resulting in a fumble forced by Kony Ealy and recovered by Wes Horton at the Seattle 39. The Panthers converted with Newton’s 15 yard pass to Greg Olsen with only 21 seconds left in the half, which ended with Freeman’s second interception.

The Seahawks forced the Panthers to punt out of the first series of the second half, and in Wilson’s first series, the 'Hawks ran the third quarter clock down to 3:14 in driving to a 20 yard Steven Hauschka chip shot, but Carolina was able to make it touchdown game again by answering with Graham Gano’s 33 yard kick. Wilson’s touchdown passes came in Seattle’s next two series- 15 yards to Norwood and Richardson going 42 yards after the catch on a 49 yard score. After a sack-fumble combo by Wagner and a Mebane recovery at the Carolina 29, Turbin finished off the scoring with a 2 yard run with 1:23 to play.

This quadrennial renewal of an old AFC West rivalry brings the Raiders, winless on the road, to town, presenting the Seahawks with an opportunity to reach 2 games above .500 for the first time this season. With the Seattle defense on top of its game and with Russell Wilson looking like his head is on straight again, it could be a long day for the Silver & Black.
