Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

As we close out the season, the last post involving the 2014 season will be this statistics post. Just want to discuss a few things:

QB spot, though possessed with good leadership in the second half of the year, had terrible numbers. Tim Boyle's job is very much in jeopardy, and is likely to be overtaken by NC State transfer Bryant Shirreffs in 2015.

Max DeLorenzo's job is also in question, he didn't play great but didn't play awful either. I think Coach Diaco will be looking for some more production in 2015, and could look to Josh Marriner, Arkeel Newsome or Ron Johnson to take a share of the carries, perhaps using all 4.

Geremy Davis accounted for wayyy more receiving production than I could've asked for. Luckily we return Thomas, Lucas, Abrams and McQuillan to help us out next year. Would be nice to get another guy to step up and contribute next year.

Stewart, Ashiru and Adeyemi are potential All-American candidates next year. All 3 had great seasons (Adeyemi most amazing considering he hadn't even started a game in his career prior to 2014), and are back for more in their senior seasons. Only losing Jones and McBryde, our defense could be one of the best in the country next year.

Bobby Puyol was perfect on field goals. Though that one extra point though, seriously?

Records being updated in reserved section posts 1-9. UConn Hall of Fame announcement coming soon.

        Mariota, Winston going pro

Oregon's savior is leaving the nest.

Oregon's champion QB Marcus Mariota, as well as 2013 Heisman Winning QB Jameis Winston of Florida State, declared for the 2015 NFL Draft today.

Mariota led the Ducks to a 15-0 record and triumph in the first ever college football playoff last month.

Several players also declared their intentions to turn pro ahead of the deadline today.

Winston's teammates Ronald Darby and Mario Edwards, Jr. also announced, along with other notable players like Trevone Boykin of TCU, Dak Prescott of Mississippi State and Connor Cook of Michigan State.

In other news, a few notable freshmen from the class of 2014 announced they are leaving their current schools to either follow outgoing coaches (stay tuned) or get more playing time.

        Some notables are:

Alabama DE Da'Shawn Hand to NC State
Arkansas QB Rafe Peavey to Tulsa
Kentucky QB Drew Barker to Old Dominion
Miami-FL QB Kevin Olsen to Marshall
Florida CB Jalen Tabor to Marshall
LSU WR Malachi Dupre to Ole Miss
Miami-FL TE Standish Dobard to Arkansas State
Nebraska RB Terrell Newby to San Jose State

Arkansas WR Mitchell coming to UConn

An exciting piece of news coming into East Hartford today as UConn has announced that Arkansas wide receiver Damon Mitchell has been released from his L.O.I. with the Razorbacks and will enroll at UConn for the 2015-16 school year.

Mitchell, who was converted from quarterback at the beginning of the year, did not see any action in 2014 and was not projected to see any again next year. The rising redshirt sophomore will have two years of eligibility left, starting in 2016.

Mitchell will join a receiving corps that will feature Thomas Lucas, Noel Thomas, Dhameer Bradley, Brian Lemelle and incoming freshman Rodney Reid in what could be a very talented group come 2016.

UConn Hall of Fame; Davis, Foxx, Jones elected

Geremy Davis in action this year.

Three new graduating players have been elected into the UConn football Hall of Fame (see page 1, post 8 or 9 to see the full list of electees since 2005 when I get the pictures working again).

WR Geremy Davis: Davis landed on the record books for his season performance in 2014, tallying nearly 1000 yards more than any other UConn receiver. Davis ends his career with 3,088 receiving yards (2nd most in UConn history), 175 receptions (4th in UConn history), and 9 TDs. I think the numbers speak for themselves, but Davis is clearly one of the most productive players in UConn history.

WR Deshon Foxx: Not the record setter Davis was, but was electric in the return game, especially in becoming a first team All-American at that spot in 2014. With his 3 TDs, (2 coming vs. UCF), Foxx continuously left UConn in great field position on offense. After bursting onto the scene in 2013 after transitioning from RB to WR, Foxx's numbers slipped in 2014, because of injury troubles. Still, he leaves with 69 receptions, 951 yards and 5 TDs.

CB Byron Jones: Snuck in over B.J. McBryde, who had a great senior year. Jones anchored the UConn secondary for the better part of 3 years, tallying 229 career tackles, 2 sacks and 9 INT's. Though not tested often in his senior year, Jones was often able to shut down the other team's top receiver, the best case of this being holding Houston's Deontay Greenberry (who was an All-American) to only 2 catches for 24 yards. Though several youngsters will step up next year, Jones' presence will be clearly missed in 2015 and beyond.

The 3 players will be inducted later today.

Haha. I'm surprised a bigger school didn't give him a flier, seeing as how several teams have been dumb enough to do that in the past. (Eh-hem; USC!!!!)

I plan to rename the fake coaches when they start coming in to look like former college/pro players, etc. Sam Freday will be one of them, haha.

UConn closes with 11 prospects in small recruiting class

Coach Bob Diaco is pretty happy with his second recruiting class. Being a defensive coordinator previous to landing this head coaching gig, I can see why.

5 of his 8 3* prospects are defensive players, and Diaco is confident they can anchor his line for several years to come. But we already knew they were committing.

Diaco got some pleasant surprises on signing day, the biggest being landing 3* WR Jeff Matthews of Clifton, New Jersey. Matthews, a 6'1 possession receiver, could pair with Rodney Reid to form a solid duo in a few years time.

A pair of quarterbacks coming into the mix also are going to be intriguing.

Jarrett Rivero and Bobby Greer, both dual-threat QBs, are 2 and 1 star prospects, respectively, but both are scouting gems who could play down the line. For now though, they will provide solid depth.

Center Brian Thompson is another surprise commit. Thompson had UConn reportedly second on his board going into signing day, but said he "thought about it overnight and made the best decision." Thompson won't play immediately, but can be redshirted and contribute in 2016.

The UConn D-Line looks to be in good shape, as T.J. Newell, Gene Jackson, and Demarcus Robinson, all 3* prsopects and bruisers, could be anchors for years to come in the 3-4.

UConn ends with only the 108th best class, but the small number of recruiting places made the class the way it is.

Navy cleared, become members of American

Navy, who "verbally committed" to the AAC last year, is officially a member of the conference now.

The Mids become the 12th member of the AAC, forming a pair of divisions, East and West. The new alignment looks like this:

EAST: UCF, UConn, Cincinnati, Temple, USF, ECU
WEST: Navy, Houston, SMU, Tulane, Tulsa, Memphis

Despite original rumors that the conference, football wise, would mandate each team play 8 games in conference. Instead, the board of A.D.'s voted to play 9 conference games, and will hold the championship game at the highest seeded team's stadium.

You're going to have quite the battles with Navy going forward. It seems like them and Army always become powerhouses in Dynasty mode. I'm interested in knowing the ratings of the guys you signed. Good work so far.

                      Claflin, Rishell leaving program

Special Team safety Jeremy Claflin and former walk-on quarterback Will Rishell have both departed the program, according to several sources. Claflin graduated in the spring and likely left the program to pursue personal interests, despite having a year of eligibility left. However, Rishell's destination is unknown at this time. There has been no confirmation as to the reason for the duo's departure.

Though neither were likely to contribute much in 2015, UConn does lose a smart secondary member who was effective in limited time on special teams over the last 2 years, and a QB who was likely to crack the depth chart as a 3rd stringer.

First off, thanks for the comment. As evidenced by my terrible loss to Army last year on neutral ground, Navy has a great chance to smoke me, as long as Keenan Reynolds is healthy (he wasn't much of last year). Luckily we landed the game at the Rent. So...bonus there.

I think the military academy dominance is a game glitch, just don't know where or why. (FTR, Army finished ranked last year, Air Force was getting votes, and Navy was also close. We'll see what happens going forward.)

I'll get the ratings on our freshmen in the roster post soon, but there weren't any major surprises off the top of my head. Newell and Robinson I think were the only two above 70 overall...

I think the Academy dominance has to do with it's high tradition rating, and their unique offenses. Georgia Tech also seems to dominate with the triple option.

Ashiru, Stewart, Adeyemi named to preseason All-American team

Jefferson Ashiru in action last year.

                          WOW!

I was definitely not expecting this. With the 2015 Preseason All-American team being announced today, UConn has 3 of their best defenders on the list this year.

LB's Jefferson Ashiru, Graham Stewart and DE Kenton Adeyemi have all been recognized. Ashiru, who was a quarterfinalist for the Butkus Award last year, finished with 69 tackles (20 for loss), 5 sacks and 2 INTs. Stewart led all Huskies with 91 tackles, in addition to a sack and 2 INT's. Adeyemi, thrust into a starting defensive end role after the sudden retirement of Angelo Pruitt last summer, led UConn with 10 sacks and 21 TFL's, with a fumble recovery TD against Houston.

The three, all seniors, will without a doubt lead a defense that figures to be one of the nation's best in 2015.

The 3 were the only Huskies nominated to the first team All-AAC group as well.

Max DeLorenzo, Junior Joseph, Andrew Adams, John Green and Bobby Puyol were all selected for the second team All-AAC.

ALSO: I have started a basketball coaching career in March Madness 06 yesterday, just for something to do around tourney time.

I encourage you to check it out, if you'd like of course. Thanks..

All 3 guys had great years last year, but it really did surprise me. Surely there were 2 better linebackers and a defensive end out there.. I thought.

Anyway, our recruiting looks a bit better than last year, lots of better guys interested this year. I'll go over in that in the coming days, as well as the new recruiting system I'll be using.

Late to the party, but I'll be following. Better second half last season, if only you could've started the season off better. But here's to next year!

Also I was wondering if you're playing the games or using coach mode? You said in your setup posts you would post which one when you decided but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere. Although it's possible I just missed it...
