On top of that, his show cause penalty ended late in 2018. That means that when Rutgers looks for a new head coach next year, they can re-hire Flood!! (j/k, but his show cause penalty is over *shrug*).

UCF has a lot less talent than in past years, but they always play us close and tough. You may not get your wish this time, jpfine. We'll see soon enough though!

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

      (7) 49 --- 2-0

      (21) 24 --- 1-1

      The Start of Something Great?

Jordan Brown ties school record with five touchdown passes to spark 42-0 run; UConn sprints to 49-24 triumph and reclaims Civil ConFLiCT Trophy

Jordan Brown has tied the UConn record for passing touchdowns in one game three times now.

Trailing 24-7 with halftime approaching, UConn would need a spark of some kind, or else the season would take on a decidedly different tone than expected. The team that showed up flat to play UNLV a week ago had appeared again. If UConn continued to leave points on the table, they would likely get blown out by former conference rival UCF once again.

The true mark of a leader comes when one is faced with a challenge or other adversity. With today’s challenge arose national title contender UConn. Starting with a 32 yard touchdown pass to Lonte’ Speier, junior quarterback Jordan Brown led a run of 42 unanswered points to help UConn reclaim the Civil ConFLiCT trophy and avenge an embarrassing loss a year ago to rival UCF. A 49-24 win where the Husky offense looked unstoppable in the second half will undoubtedly get fans thinking about the possibility of a national title run this season. If the 42-0 offense shows up every week, UConn may well be a favorite to win their third national title come January.

While UConn finished the game hot, it was UCF that started the game that way, perhaps exposing a defense that was not ready to play right off the bat. Sophomore running back Ryan Grafcheck started the scoring with a 13 yard touchdown run after both teams traded fumbles to open the contest. The Huskies struggled to contain the burly Florida native, as Grafcheck ran for 112 yards and the touchdown on 32 touches, adding 60 more receiving yards on four catches off screens.

UConn equalized on a Chamarkelle Byrom touchdown catch a few plays later, but UCF would score three times consecutively. Andre George intercepted Jordan around midfield to end a UConn drive to start the second quarter, and the Knights wrapped up an eight play drive with a one-yard Jaymison Ball touchdown run. A 44 yard field goal from Jon Denton followed, and the Knights scored again shortly thereafter on a tremendous touchdown grab from A.J. McDonald. The Knights had gone up 24-7 and had all the momentum with halftime nearing.

UCF was on fire in the first half. A.J. McDonald makes a stellar touchdown grab (LEFT) while Ryan Grafcheck (RIGHT) ran for over 100 yards and this first quarter score.

UConn’s offense was once again struggling to finish drives, having already tallied two turnovers and a missed field goal from Anthony Ricciardi. However, Jordan Brown rallied his troops and brought order to the offense. Tight ends Alex Paige and Evan Jeppesen made first down catches, and an efficient six play drive ended with a 32-yard touchdown strike to Speier. Linzell Tyson intercepted Kyle Fowler right before the half, and though no score came from that, UConn suddenly had momentum headed into the half.

UCF focused extensively on their ground game in part due to an injury to starting quarterback Fowler, who missed the third quarter while tending to a broken finger suffered from a hit on the interception throw. Garr Feldman, a capable backup, came in on two different occasions to relieve Fowler, even throwing the touchdown pass to McDonald on his first entry into the contest.

However, UCF’s talented wide receivers never received much of a chance to make an impact. Grafcheck and tight end Earl Rowe were the leading Knights pass-catchers with just four apiece, respectively. Fowler and Feldman combined for only 15 completions all game. Especially in the second half, UCF's offense stalled courtesy of UConn keeping the ball in their possession for much of the second half. The Huskies played with a strong sense of urgency to score, and do so quickly.

Senior tailback Mike Molden ripped off a 56 yard touchdown with the triple option team, and following a UCF three and out, Brown threw his second touchdown, this time to Paige from 13 yards out to take the lead 28-24.

Mike Molden (RIGHT) broke 100 yards on just nine carries, in large part due to this long touchdown run sprung by an awesome block from Dallas Freeman (LEFT)

Freshman linebacker Payton Ash recorded his first career interception to end a UCF drive shortly thereafter, and UConn was suddenly cruising with the lead in their clutch. Speier blew past the Knights’ secondary for a 51 yard touchdown, and the rout was on. Devin Brown would tally a touchdown catch later on, while Molden added a second score in the fourth quarter to finish up the run. By the time all was said and done, UConn scored on all but one of their drives in the second half, tallying almost 300 yards of total offense in the second half.

If that recap left your head spinning, that’s because it felt the same way playing the game. UConn’s scoring blitz was fast and tenacious, showing just what this offense is capable of when operating at full strength. Jordan tied school and personal records for the third time with five touchdown passes, coupled with 290 passing yards and just one interception. Molden and Ashanti Swift topped 100 yards on the ground, while Speier led all receivers with six grabs, 132 yards and the pair of scores. The offensive line played very well and kept Jordan out of trouble for the most part.

UConn’s top three pass catchers hauled in touchdowns. Speier (LEFT) caught two and Byrom (RIGHT) UConn’s first of the day. Slot man Devin Brown and tight end Alex Paige caught the other two scoring throws from Jordan Brown.

If nothing else, these stats and today’s performance shows that UConn’s offense can hurt defenses in a variety of ways. They have the depth to pulverize thin or weak secondaries, and the depth to wear down defensive fronts with multiple running backs capable of handling a full workload. They also can throw out a triple option run game led by the dynamic two-way sophomore Tyson, capable of spreading out defenses even more.

UConn's new-look defense also showed encouraging signs by making a few key plays when needed. Tyson’s interception at the half was a momentum booster, while Ash played a strong game including his first career interception. Demetris Sands forced a fumble and Kion East recorded a career high 13 tackles. Coach Stephen Belichick stated that UCF would teach us a lot about our team. We learned today that we might be pretty good if everyone steps up each game.

With their record now at 2-0, UConn returns home to face rival Houston next week. UConn has never lost in eight games against their former rival in the AAC and Big 12.

Andre George (LEFT) and Keon Patterson (RIGHT) each recorded interceptions, George of Jordan Brown, Patterson's courtesy of backup Kelly Carlson late in the going.

Wow! Talk about an offensive explosion! The defense really picked it up too, shutting them out in the second half. Hopefully that second half continues into next week

Nice to see the offense come alive for UConn. Hopefully next game it won't take being in such a deficit for that to happen.

Thanks guys, the offense was nice to see after a slow start. To have any chance of going far this season, we'll need to score often.. I'm really worried about our defense as we're still young and undisciplined at times - hence the streaky play of our defense in this week's game. I'm worried that if we struggle to score in any game, we could be in trouble (sort of like Oklahoma usually is in real life).

In years past, our defense has been more than good enough to cover up any flaws -- 2017's national title team is a great example. We had a below average pass game but our defense and run game were so good that our deficiencies went unnoticed. That's not really the case anymore, there isn't a Shav Wade roaming our secondary or a Cam Stapleton wreaking havoc on the defensive front.

Then again, if we score 50 in every game, we may not have much to worry about. We're on to Houston! Thanks as always fellas!

                  Team Leaders:

PASSING: Casey Parker (HOU): 42-69, 665 yds, 7 TD, INT

                  INTERCEPTIONS: Mike Ellis (HOU): 2

                  Tarik Madison (UCONN): 2

                  Guru’s Thoughts:

Houston was a fun team to play against for years - first for four seasons in the American and three more in the Big 12, both of us having moved to that conference in 2018. This is our first meeting since 2020, and we hold an 8-0 record all-time against the Cougs.

Houston, as usual, has a good team and a revived head coach in David Shaw. His offense has evolved, as he looks to the passing game more than he did at Stanford. Nevertheless, expect a lot more running out of this Houston team than in past meetings. Martavian Gasher will likely be the focal point of their offense, but they have a good aerial attack as well. Casey Parker has been around a while, while Skye Robinson and Prentiss Barth are good wideouts. Tight end Manny Hernandez can do it all and is an all-Big 12 candidate. Their O-Line has some young and inexperienced guys, so we’ll try to apply all the pressure we can with four-man fronts and some blitz packages.

Their defense is solid. Linebacker Mike Ellis is an NFL player, while defensive linemen Gilbert Pyle and Evan Geptoo will be in a few years. We’ll look to attack Houston’s suspect secondary.

Houston has played very well to open the season and are coming off of a thrashing of a ranked Miami squad on the road. To beat the Cougs, we will need to neutralize Gasher and make them beat us through the air, where our secondary matches up well with their pass catchers. On the other side, my hope is that Ashanti Swift can wear down their front seven, thus clearing the pocket for Jordan Brown, who will need to attack downfield. A balanced offense and a good effort may do the trick for us today.

                  Past Skirmishes:

2020 (LAST MEETING/AT VENUE): Isaac Jackson helped UConn wrap up the Big 12 East with a convincing victory over a young Houston squad. Ice-Jax set a UConn record for passing yards in a game with 481, while Heisman runner-up Luke Williamson had a tremendous game as well, adding in four touchdown runs. UConn would go on to defeat Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Title Game two weeks later, eventually falling to Oregon in the CFP Championship.

2018 (PRIOR MEETING AT VENUE): Despite a sour ending to their national title defense, UConn was able to recover and log a big win on senior day against their rivals and eventual Big 12 Champion Cougars. Then true freshman Tanner Dean-Lowry threw a career-high four touchdowns, while Arkeel Newsome ran for 166 yards and a score. Derek Robinson tallied a 57-yard pick six to give UConn the lead early in the second quarter, and UConn never looked back. UConn outscored Houston 24-0 in the second half.

2016 PART II (THROWBACK SPECIAL!): Having beaten the Cougs early in the season, UConn would meet their perennial adversaries for the second time in the American Conference Championship Game, hosted at Rentschler Field. With a New Year’s Six bowl bid hanging in the balance, UConn overcame a slow start and outscored Houston 45-10 in the final three quarters. The Huskies would go on to play in the Rose Bowl and lose to LSU.

Alex Smith-esque game manager Bryant Shirreffs threw three touchdown passes and Josh Marriner ran for two more. Jhavon Williams and Jordan Floyd led the defensive charge by intercepting NFL draft pick John O’Korn twice apiece, accounting for four of UConn’s six total takeaways on the day. O’Korn also threw five interceptions in the first meeting that year, the game where Jamar Summers tallied a school record four interceptions in one game. For those keeping score, that’s a combined total of eleven interceptions in two games. Wow! (Also featured -- Greg Ward Jr. as a wide receiver!)

Syvelle Wade, top O-Line Prospect Marco Ciacci on campus for Houston game

Big news on the UConn recruiting front as two important targets are slated to visit the school this weekend. Headlining is 6-foot-1 three-star corner Syvelle Wade (77 OVR) from Union, New Jersey. Syvelle is the brother of UConn's career interception leader Shav Wade, and Shav is in town before his London Black Knights face off against the New England Patriots this weekend.

The other prospect visiting this week is four-star offensive tackle Marco Ciacci (79 OVR) from Rhode Island. UConn finds themselves in a tight race for the 6'3, 268 pound Ciacci, competing against local schools Rutgers, Pitt, Syracuse and national power Notre Dame. Ciacci is not expected to pick a school until the February signing deadline, but wants to get his visits in soon. Ciacci is an important target for UConn. Much like Cole Monroe a year ago, Ciacci is someone the coaches see as an immediate starter at the right tackle position.

                      First Test of Adversity

Huskies fend off late charge from Houston, now 9-0 all-time against Cougars; UConn loses star running back Swift to broken collarbone, may be out remainder of regular season

Swift gets driven into the ground by Mike Ellis, perhaps ending his regular season.

No path to the national title ever comes easy. As such, the first obstacle in UConn’s path toward a third national title showed itself in game number three against of the 2023 season against rival Houston.

Lonte’ Speier caught a 32 yard touchdown pass from Jordan Brown with under three minutes to go to help UConn fend off a furious late charge from Houston to snare a 31-21 victory. The win defends UConn perfect record all-time against Houston, and will surely be a welcome sign for a now 3-0 squad and their fans who foresaw a close game against a good opponent. However, the result now flies in the background as the entire dynamic of the UConn offense seems likely to shift as soon as next week. Star sophomore tailback Ashanti Swift exited today’s contest late in the fourth quarter with a broken collarbone, an injury that will sideline him for at least eight weeks and leave the UConn coaching staff readjusting future gameplans.

The focal point of a power run game, it remains to be seen how UConn will handle Swift’s loss. Fortunately, Coach Stephen Belichick has a plethora of offensive weapons to utilize in the meantime, perhaps to numb the loss a bit. That depth is probably the reason UConn won today’s contest. Even on a day where UConn struggled to score consistently, Jordan Brown helped orchestrate enough scoring drives to get the job done.

UConn took control from the outset, but it was a surprisingly low-scoring contest in a game that was supposed to showcase two high-powered offenses. The lower than expected score spoke to the quality of defense played by both sides. Payton Ash, the highly heralded freshman linebacker, tallied eleven tackles and a sack for UConn. Fellow freshman Demetris Sands and Kiel Hughes recorded sacks as well; UConn took down Casey Parker four times in total. Mike Ellis and Jeffrey Concepcion made plays all over the field for Houston in stopping multiple UConn drives; the Cougars defense recorded five total sacks.

Jordan Brown's touchdown pass to Marcus Rodgers in a goal to go situation midway through the first quarter was the only scoring play of the first half. Neither team was able to get going, as UConn punted four times while Houston missed a pair of field goals off the boot of Chris Messersmith.

It was not until the third quarter that either side would score again. On the first possession of the half, UConn drove 80 yards downfield on the strength of a pair of triple option runs from Mike Molden before Swift punched in a touchdown from short yardage for a UConn touchdown, 14-0. Several long drives once again stalled out before Swift busted off a 27 yard touchdown run, off-tackle to the right side to push the UConn lead to 21-0 early in the fourth quarter.

Swift ran for two scores, carrying the UConn offense at points in the game.

Now trailing by three scores in the fourth quarter, Houston suddenly flipped a switch and their stagnant offense caught fire. On the very next play from scrimmage, Houston's senior signal caller Parker tossed an under route to top receiver Skye Robinson. Making a tremendous one-handed grab, the senior turned upfield, broke a tackle from Tory Greening and outran everyone for a 75 yard touchdown.

Skye Robinson showed late in the game how dangerous a playmaker he can be.

UConn responded with a ten-play drive ending in a successful 39 yard Anthony Ricciardi field goal, but Houston would rattle off the next fourteen points. Parker hit Corey DaMarcus for a 48 yard pass play, followed by another 27 yard throw to Robinson before DaMarcus caught the first touchdown, a three yard slant route into the end zone.

Following a UConn three and out, DaMarcus returned the punt past midfield. Tailback Martavian Gasher, the leading runner of the day with 130 yards on 23 carries, broke off his longest run of the day on a 38 yard dash to the left side. Fullback Johnny Miller wrapped up the drive with a touchdown from four yards out to pull the Cougs within just a field goal with 4:15 remaining. Most of Parker's 295 yards passing on the day came in these last nine minutes of the game, but showed how dangerous their offense can be at any time.

Known for a pass game for years, former Stanford coach David Shaw has the Cougs rushing attack purring. Gasher (LEFT) and Miller (RIGHT) pulled UH within one score.

UConn desperately needed a touchdown with the lead down to three and momentum on the Houston sideline. Thankfully, Jordan and the wideouts delivered. Chamarkelle Byrom made a 31 yard catch and run on a curl route, Speier chipped in a 12 yard catch on a curl and then the 34 yard dagger on a post route, beating safety Keenan Lockwood for the touchdown. Speier led all receivers with ten catches and 137 yards plus the score.

Two-way dynamo Linzell Tyson ended any last hopes for Houston with a sideline interception soon thereafter to effectively end the game, and everything was going to be good for UConn. However, Swift went down injured during the Huskies’ attempt to burn the rest of the clock. On a sweep play to the right, Swift’s left shoulder was driven into the ground thanks to a tackle from the big-hitting senior linebacker Ellis. Swift struggled to his feet and exited the game, later to be diagnosed with a broken collarbone. Molden finished off the game, but on a sour note for UConn. A solid 31-21 win certainly happened, but a lost leader in the process dampened the mood post-game.

“Next man up”, commented a disappointed coach Belichick to the media after the game.

Jordan Brown commented on the need for leaders like him to step up as well. “If I need to throw more, then I’ll do it. We will not let one setback derail our season, I’ll see to it”. Brown completed 23 of his 38 passes for 326 yards and two scores, zero interceptions. None of UConn’s coaches commented on how the offense might change moving forward, leaving UConn fans to wonder how exactly things will proceed on the East Hartford hype train.

Mike Molden (89 OVR, fifth year senior, balanced) figures to be the starter moving forward, but he is a slender six feet tall and not as powerful as Swift. Jon Shaffer (82 OVR, redshirt sophomore, slight power) and Scottie Phillips (77 OVR, redshirt sophomore, power), are bigger bodies and the only other backup running backs left on the roster. UConn could also elect to move to the passing game more, centering the offense on Jordan Brown and moving away from smashmouth football that has helped define UConn for years.

The good news for UConn is that they will have an extra week to try out new formations and gameplans as they have a bye before travelling to Clemson to face a much-improved Tigers squad in two weeks, kicking off ACC play.

UConn may need to focus more on the passing game and receivers such as Rodgers (LEFT) and Speier (RIGHT) moving forward.

I bet that was an exciting 4th quarter to watch. Congrats on pulling out the W, but it’s unfortunate we lost Swift in the process. Specially late in the game like that on a basically meaningless play (I know you were trying to run out the clock, but still). If no one else steps up to run the ball Brown is going to have to throw more, which makes you guys one dimensional and that’s almost never a good thing. Maybe we see Tyson in the back field?

Talk about a scoring explosion! Brutal loss at the end of a hard fought win, but Molden and Shaffer are very capable and complement each other well so they should hopefully pick up the slack at least. Even if they can't, with your makeshift line, maybe you should try going Air Raid! At the very least, you have the talent under center and out wide to play that style anyways. Good luck!

The 4th quarter definitely provided a spark to a dull defensive game otherwise. I'm glad we shut down Houston's offense for the most part and did just enough, they have some talented players. Not our best day, but we have room to improve and fine tune our approach over a bye. As long as we win, I’ll be a happy camper.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but I think I erred in running Swift on a weakside power pattern that late. Ellis plays the other side usually, but he had been flying all over the field and made some hard hits all game. A simple dive play would have probably done the trick, but you just never know. It’s really a shame we’ll lose one of our best players for most of the season, but thankfully this isn’t the first time this has happened and we have a blueprint for how to deal with it. When Byers went down hurt last year, we kept running with Swift. Now Shaffer, who plays like Swift, is probably most likely to step into the lineup. Molden provides lots of value as a receiver, third down back and goalline back, but we’ll see what I decide to do moving forward.

For the first time perhaps in the dynasty, our ground and pound approach might actually change.

With the talent we have at receiver and the way circumstances have played out, the opportunity to go air raid will be hard to pass up. Molden is a solid between the tackles guy, but he provides more value than Swift as a pass catcher. I want to give him 15-20 touches per game in a variety of ways. Jordan is significantly more talented than the game-manager quarterbacks that have come through our system in years past (Bryant Shirreffs, Jarrett Rivero, young TDL and young Ice-Jax). Thus, he is more than capable of carrying the offense on his shoulders.

Of course, you can say whatever you want until you get punched in the face, so we'll find out what happens after our bye. Thanks guys!
