Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

Looking at your depth chart, it is clear that OL has been a problem area for you in recruiting and is probably the difference between you being a title contender and a Citrus Bowl participant. You absolutely must find another stud or two up front if you want to be able to compete in late November through January. The true freshman at left tackle is going to be a big problem as we get into ACC play, I'm afraid to say. I found out the hard way at Tulane what not having a dominant OL can do to an offense. You can have the best supporting cast ever, but if your OL is average, the team will suffer.

Vonquez, Quay, Kaliontay, Rymone, Jurdel, Syvelle...love it! This definitely brings more realism to this game instead of playing with a bunch of John Smiths and Mike Johnsons.

Sucks to see Ashanti go down, but that picture of him running through the Houston defender is incredible.

I hope you can overcome this adversity, but you may be in for a long year. The chinks in the armor are already starting to show here in the early going against lesser opponents. It's going to take one of the best coaching jobs you have ever had to power through this. We know you have it in you though!

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

Bye Week Headlines: Orlovsky speaks about UConn’s gameplan

With UConn seeking to look forward after a devastating collarbone injury to star tailback Ashanti Swift, head coach Stephen Belichick and first-year offensive coordinator Dan Orlovsky spoke at a joint press conference about the team’s plans moving forward.

What to know: Molden will start at RB

Mike Molden scoring a touchdown in last year’s Citrus Bowl.

Belichick first noted that Mike Molden will assume starting running back duties moving forward, with redshirt sophomore Jon Shaffer assuming backup duties, notably the second running back slot in the split backfield look. He’ll likely see the most playing time in Linzell Tyson's triple option packages. The triple option team has seen less action with Tyson now becoming a starting cornerback, but that look could be worked into the offense more.

Molden (89 OVR) is a fifth year senior from San Antonio who was a lightly regarded three-star prospect in the 2019 recruiting class. He has not seen much action throughout his career, receiving just 86 career carries and 440 yards to this point, but has developed a reputation for being a reliable backup running back when needed. Molden is a stalky 6-feet tall, 215 pounds and a solid goalline back with a high break tackle rating (90). Molden is also a more reliable receiver than the straight-line runners Swift and Shaffer, meaning it is possible that Molden will be utilized more as a receiving back moving forward.

        “More Passing”

With the running game off to a shaky start this year, and now with Swift’s injury, Orlovsky and Coach Belichick stated how the time is now to make some changes. Orlovsky in particular stated that the offense would likely be in Jordan Brown's hands a bit more considering the talent and depth UConn has at wide receiver, as well as the now relative inexperience of the running backs. Orlovsky hopes to work more one on one with Brown in weekly practice sessions and film studies in the coming weeks. “Continuing on as we usually run things will not help us much. This is our best chance to reinvent the offense a bit here. We have relied on our running backs for a long time and won lots of games on that strategy, but now we need to look toward what will best help our team right now. We think more passing is the way to do it”, stated Orlovsky. Coach Belichick agreed, acknowledging the need to adapt to what the team has right now, and not rely on past gameplans.

        Belichick on the defense

Coach Belichick, a former safeties coach in the NFL, has stated his intent to stick with a 4-3 front for the time being to utilize his best players. Sophomore Tarik Madison has emerged as a defensive leader from one defensive tackle spot early this season, but the staff has apparently been pleased with the play of fifth year senior Jeremy Broadricke as well.

Sophomore inside linebacker Marshawn Dortch, a candidate to start at the beginning of the season, will continue to come off the bench for now.

        Other Injury News

While we all know about Ashanti Swift's status, other injuries flew under the radar last week. Starting safety Aaron Brook was diagnosed with a mild pectoral strain after complaining of some pain after the Houston game. Brook should be ready to go for Clemson next week.

Defensive tackle Broadricke also tweaked his ankle toward the end of the contest, he too should be ready to play against Clemson.

        RECRUITING

Wade Commits; first pickup in Class of ‘24

Though it was likely a foregone conclusion when he visited with his brother in attendance, three-star cornerback Syvelle Wade (Projected: 77 OVR) made things official and verbally committed to UConn after the Houston game last weekend. Wade becomes the first commit in the Huskies’ 2024 recruiting class, at one of UConn’s biggest spots of need. Wade figures to contend for a starting role as a freshman next fall, projecting to slot in perhaps as the third or fourth corner depending on the futures of swiss army knife sophomore Linzell Tyson and Tory Greening, who is draft eligible this spring. Redshirt sophomore Kelvin Cooke is also on the roster and figures to be back in 2024.

Wade, from Union, New Jersey, is the younger brother of UConn’s all-time leader in career interceptions, Shavlion Wade. Shav is in his second year in the NFL, now playing for the London Black Knights.

UConn loses important pipeline guard to Oregon, another to a lock-out

UConn’s struggles along the offensive line have been obvious for years now, and this news certainly will not help the future at these positions. Offensive guard Jake Blount (projected: 76 OVR), a three-star prospect from Asbury Park, New Jersey, announced his intent to sign with Oregon at the early signing deadline in December.

The news comes as a big blow to UConn’s recruiting board for a few reasons. With impact contributors needed across the offensive line, Blount could have been a plug and play starter next fall. Further, Blount is from New Jersey, which has provided a treasure trove of recruits in recent years for the Huskies. UConn staffers thought they had a solid chance at landing Blount for this reason alone, but Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich likely had an instant commit recruiting attribute that was utilized and successful in this battle.

UConn also got bad news from offensive tackle Luke Stivers (projected: 75 OVR), a 6-foot-8, 305 pound behemoth from Louisiana, as he has removed UConn from his final list. He will now decide between Michigan State, Oregon and LSU. Blount and Stivers were two of the top three O-Line prospects on UConn’s board this fall.

The Huskies staff will now turn their focus to other local prospects to try and add some depth to the offensive line, notably Marco Ciacci from Rhode Island, a four-star tackle who visited with Syvelle Wade last weekend. His battle will almost certainly stretch into the offseason. Connecticut natives Qua’Sean Franklin and Dashaun Braden, a guard whom UConn has just begun to scout, will be key fallback options. Center Stephon Ecker, a four-star recruit from Louisiana, will be another heavy target for UConn moving forward.

Stay tuned for the Clemson game next week!

(exaggerating tone) I have two friends in life: Those four stills at the end of each game and the African-American name generator. (end exaggerating tone).

We’ve gotten off to a decent start and are ranked highly, but there certainly seems to be a lot of gloom and doom around the program, like we’re being doubted or something (maybe because we are). There is good reason for that of course; the UNLV game was not pretty, we had to dig out of a hole against UCF, and barely fended off a furious Houston rally. Now we’re down an important player.

I was most worried about the defense entering the season, but they have actually played well so far. Our problem is that they are still very young and a little undisciplined. Little things like broken tackles, aggressively selling out on an option fake or busted coverage have been happening at important times and those could hurt us at some point. Our defensive backs have worried me a bit, Tory Greening in particular seems a step slower than last year - a bad sign for a #1 corner. Our defensive front has not yet shown me they can stop anyone, concerning especially when we play Syracuse and their triple option later this year.

And of course, you said it, the offensive line has not been good. For comparison, Ole Miss won the national title last season trotting out an O-Line with an average overall of about 87. Our average overall hovers somewhere around 75. To be frank, our freshman left tackle is the least of my concern right now. I’m worried about the right side of the line again. Nothing I have tried for the past three seasons has seemed to work, and that’s entirely on me. Joe Sykes is one of the biggest busts in dynasty history. Michael Clark was okay a few years ago, but nowhere near good enough to play every down without becoming a turnstyle. Nate Dotson has busted as a JUCO guy I brought in last year. The jury’s still out on Roshawn Rowe. Korey Davis-Love is our most talented linemen, but he’s a natural guard and has been largely average at right tackle so far. His sacks allowed statistic is higher than it should be for an 89 overall player. Bringing in bodies does not automatically equal talent and we just have not been able to develop most of these guys.

Our skill position talent is still good enough to win a national title if everyone plays well, but the ACC is deep and it may only take one team to trip us up and unravel everything, like you mentioned. I feel phantom pressure to win now before inevitably lots of important players turn pro after this season and we have a drastically different team next fall. 2024 and beyond definitely feels like a rebuilding period, but we have a ways to go before thinking about that. I’m still confident in our guys as always. I appreciate your well wishes, Geezy, this will indeed be quite a coaching job if we can pull out a New Year’s Six game this year!

You’ve drawn the short end of the stick at UNLV unfortunately. The guy who left the program before you (Tyrone Nix, now head coach at Kansas) had a few really good years, but left the cupboard rather bare for you. Outside of a couple good players, you just haven’t been able to recruit well and that’s hurt the program a lot. This is your fourth year, so I would suspect you’ll get fired if you finish below .500 -- that may not be a bad thing though, especially if it means you drop down to O-Coordinator at a power school, try and build up your brand again. I just don't see UNLV having any success in the next few years without some very strong impact recruiting.

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

Love the bye week storylines! Molden seems like he can get the job done and it should be a solid run by committee performance, and maybe he can turn into sort of a James White receiving back for you, especially with the newfound emphasis on the passing game it sounds like. A passing approach with a heavy receiving back, sounds just like a Belichick offense eh, haha?

Also, something I saw you mentioned to Geezy is the use of the name generator! So my question to you is, I know that you use the editor to put in things like the Playoff which I've tested and gotten to work and should be able to do myself. Now my question for you is regarding the name generator to spice things up and make player names more realistic, do you go in and just manually modify certain players to change their names prior to recruiting? Or do you change folks names in your head and then manually modify them after they sign ? Or is it something else entirely. I've noticed how unique the names of players are in your dynasty (even on opposing teams) and would love to get the same realism in my own, and was just curious as to how you go about implementing that!

Not to mention, I rename my recruits after signing them so as to get that variety, but it would really help the immersion factor to not have gaps in my storylines where I talk about a recruit and then all of a sudden once they're on my team they have a different name haha.

You guys could be in for a good year; Lake is a senior so it's now or never. The biggest challenge you face is playing the gauntlet schedule that an independent has, so best of luck navigating the schedule the rest of the season!

Hahah you've got a good point, this is a Belichick offense! Molden should be more than good enough to carry our load. He may not be a feature back like Swift, but I can rely on him to pick up yards as we need to. With all that has happened so far, I think it's the right decision to put games in the hands of Jordan Brown. It would be foolish of me to not utilize our 97 overall quarterback as much as possible.

As for the name generator/changes.... in the early seasons of the dynasty, I would create templates to minimize my usage of in-game shots in case players names did change. I would often make a list of the recruiting board in my notebook and change the names when guys enrolled/committed.

I dug up some old photos a few weeks ago that show this plan in action; these would have appeared in season six had I not temporarily ended the dynasty. Here, you will see our current starting tight end "David Wesley" (now Alex Paige) and our current starting strong safety "Seth Edwards" (now Aaron Brook). Had I gotten to that point that season, I would have created recruiting graphics for those guys with their new names.

A couple times in earlier seasons, I posted about commits only for me to change their names later and without explanation. One example was our current fifth string wideout Drew Talley. When he committed several seasons ago, I entered him in my commits list as Kris Williams, the name he was given when generated by the CPU. I'm not sure that name change was ever noted and I regret that lapse in the story looking back now. There may have been other examples, but that's the one that I remember most LOL. When I would play other teams back then, I would go through their rosters just before our matchups and make the changes at that point.

Ever since I restarted the dynasty, though, the approach has been a bit more organized. Typically I set up recruiting boards in the preseason, make some notes, go into the editor and change names immediately so I can grab shots directly from the recruiting screen. As the season goes on and players sign with other teams, I try to keep up and edit their names/appearances as well to save me work down the line.

Keep in mind that I also used edited versions of mattrd39's two recruiting classes in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, which came with a diversified name pool. All freshmen, sophomores and juniors have edited names on all teams at this point, so all I need to do for other teams right now is edit the names/skin colors of any opposing upperclassmen I deem necessary.

It's a bit of work, but all of this certainly makes the dynasty a bit more worthwhile and more fun than playing with/against a white running back named John Smith. I'm a bit behind in your videos so I don't know what you have been doing, but you could always make some graphics with the names you intend to use instead of showing recruiting races as they appear in game. A little extra work, but could help prevent those gaps you spoke of in terms of player names.

Thanks for the questions and great commentary as always moose! I apologize for the long answer :P. I hope to get caught up on your Pitt dynasty and others real soon, and...

              ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Author's Note: hopefully I'll have my Clemson game up next week.... I've been a little tied up with another hobby-related project this past week.

Further, regarding those two old photos from the lost season six... not long ago I uncovered some old pictures in a folder on my flash drive I had forgotten about from that season shortened by hiatus. A lot was missing, but there were some player of the week shots, concept photos of guys with different jersey numbers/names, and pics from the Houston game and Big 12 title game that season. The best photo I found was a shot of Shav Wade headbutting a guy. Good times... If anyone is interested I would be more than happy to post a few of these at some point down the line.

              Thanks for everyone's continued support!

Now I do not recall exactly what happened here - it's possible Shav jumped with the receiver and simply landed first. But as far as I'm concerned, with his head angled like that, it's a headbutt. Add another tally to the legend of Shav Wade, intimidating foes by all means necessary!

Houston won the Big 12 the year prior, but they were very bad that season (2-10, I think?). We won this game 31-7 and ended up clinching the Big 12 East in the process with a 9-3 record. We won our last four regular season games after I went on hiatus.

As I mentioned when the thread came back my camera (then a Samsung tablet) shattered at some point in late 2016 and I had to throw it away. I was able to move some of my old photos from the tablet to a flash drive, but many of the photos/box scores from the remainder of season six are likely lost forever. It was a real nice surprise to uncover a few game photos, at least!

                      Hahaha yeah it sure does.

While Shav flew under the radar as a prospect, we will not make the same mistake with little bro. I have very high hopes for Syvelle, and he should be a great contributor early. Even if he struggles a little, it will still be really cool to see #3 patrolling the back end again.

                        Guru's Thoughts

Unlike real life, Clemson has been largely irrelevant for much of the ten seasons of this dynasty. 4th year head coach Jeff Brohm has done a fantastic job recruiting and molding this program back into a national player; they have a lot of good, young talent that could make them a playoff contender very soon, if they are not already.

Clemson has momentum on their side as they recently beat an always-talented Notre Dame team, the reigning ACC champs. Their offense can hurt us in a number of ways and their attack centers on Tyshaun Ruiz, a fine young quarterback who has size (6-foot-5), and speed. However, he is only a redshirt freshman making his fourth career start. The Tigers have a very strong offensive line to protect him, but our goal will be to get into the backfield early and often. Even if Ruiz cannot get going in the air, we will need to stop both of their solid tailbacks in Jermaine Anderson and Tim Stanley, who tend to split the workload and do a good job staying fresh.

Their defense is also solid, but there are a few holes we will try to exploit. Their linebackers are easily the weakest position group on that team. I like true freshman Maliere Durcus, but they simply do not have experience or much talent. If Ashanti Swift were healthy, our plan may have been to run up the middle.

However, we cannot do that and instead might try to test their corners with a heavy dose of Jordan Brown and our wide receivers. As will be the case every week this season, our pass catcher depth will give us an edge and opposing teams nightmares. The only problem is that Clemson may be the team best suited to defend us. I could easily see Clemson trying a 3-3-5 look to keep Michael Scantling, Sam Jester and Endrick Kennedy on the field at all times to defend our top three pass-catchers. Those respective matchups may decide the game.

Disruptive defensive tackle Mason Viner is an NFL player and he will be an extremely important player in today’s contest. If he can make the youngsters on our offensive line uncomfortable, Clemson could tee off on Jordan Brown and effectively shut down our offense. A path to victory at that point would be very challenging.

This will be a very tough game and I would not be surprised at all if we lost. I think it is rather courteous of the Vegas bettors to set the line at even; Clemson seems to have a clear edge. Clemson has the pieces to shut down our strengths and attack our weaknesses. They also have the advantage of a home crowd and recent momentum while we have had some recent adversity to deal with, as well as a bye where our guys could easily come out rusty.

Can't wait to see what happens!

                        Last Meeting

2021: Looking to put two early season losses behind them, UConn began to round back into form with a convincing 55-21 win against Clemson, who happened to be down their starting quarterback that day. Luke Williamson provided much of the offensive highlight reel for UConn, tallying 183 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a 54 yard dash (ABOVE). Isaac Jackson was flawless, throwing 22-29 for 284 yards and four touchdowns, with no interceptions. Relive the game by clicking here!

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

                          (4) 52 --- 4-0, 1-0

                          (11) 31 --- 3-1, 0-1

                          SPARK PLUG

Starting with an odd fumble recovery touchdown, UConn goes on eye-popping 38-0 run between late second and early fourth quarters, puts away #11 Clemson 52-31

The play that sparked a 38-0 run? Mike Molden fumbling into the end zone with UConn trailing by ten and Lonte’ Speier scooping up the easiest and luckiest touchdown of his life.

UConn promised a high-flying, more pass-oriented offense over their bye week as a response to the injury of star tailback Ashanti Swift. And boy, did they deliver on that promise.

Despite falling behind as much as ten points in the second quarter, UConn, as they often do, turned up the intensity in the second half and went on a 38-0 run to put #11 Clemson away easily, 52-31 the final score. After two weeks of concern from fans about the direction of the team following an up and down opening three games, UConn’s offensive performance during that run may well have put those doubts aside. If UConn can continue to score 50 points every week and if the defense holds up enough as it did today, UConn has likely transformed themselves back into a national title contender almost overnight.

However, they will need to avoid the slow starts like today. Clemson scored first on a 52-yard Aaron Adelman field goal, and UConn would take the lead a few minutes later off a Mike Molden touchdown run from a yard out. Clemson would score the next two touchdowns, however, and looked to be in control at one point. Tyshaun Ruiz, Clemson’s star redshirt freshman quarterback, shredded the UConn secondary on a ten-play drive ending with a spectacular 15 yard touchdown catch from Omontez Thomas as he fell to the turf. Thomas, a true freshman and nationally ranked five-star recruit this past season, led the Tigers with a dozen receptions for 139 yards.

True freshman Omontez Thomas made an impression on UConn, hauling in twelve passes for 139 yards on the afternoon, including this toe-tapper.

Ruiz threw his second touchdown of the day early in the second quarter, to another true freshman in tight end Cooper Nelson-Smith from a yard out. Clemson had a ten point lead, and looked to be pulling away.

Being a pocket passer, Jordan Brown has limitations sometimes in the ways he can impact a game. However, he may have made the biggest play when it mattered for UConn. With the offense struggling to move downfield at that point, Jordan rolled out on a third and long on the ensuing drive and somehow picked up 22 yards with his heavy feet on a scramble to keep the chains moving. The unexpected QB run sparked the offense, but almost proved to be nullified at the same time.

Marching toward the end zone, Mike Molden received another carry from inside the five and seemed to be on his way into the end zone when he dove at the plane. Instead of crossing though, he fumbled at the one-yard line, a possible disaster. As the ball rolled into the end zone, Lonte’ Speier, out blocking to the right side, came into the play at the right time and scooped up the ball before anyone else to preserve the UConn touchdown. An odd drive pulled UConn back within three points of the lead, and Speier would be on the receiving end of a Jordan Brown touchdown pass just before the half, giving UConn the 21-17 advantage at the break. Speier, the junior from North Carolina, led UConn with his eight grabs and 112 yards, continuing his fantastic start to the season.

The Husky offense would get some help after the intermission, particularly through the defense and Linzell Tyson ending a pair of Clemson drives with interceptions. Both of Tyson’s takeaways turned into scoring drives finished by a Molden touchdown run and an Anthony Ricciardi field goal. Jordan Brown added a touchdown run of his own to cap a 17-0 period, and the Huskies basically put the game away when Jordan threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to tight end Alex Paige.

Swiss army knife Linzell Tyson continues to prove his value to the Huskies, recording two interceptions on back to back drives to help the run.

With a 45-17 lead, coach Stephen Belichick would pull the starters soon thereafter, signifying that the damage had been done and that the team was starting to look forward to next week. The starters on offense were phenomenal for the most part, Jordan completing 32 of his 49 passes for 395 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Speier and Chamarkelle Byrom tallied 100 receiving yards apiece, while Paige added 93. Consistently underrated slot man Devin Brown had seven catches of his own. Fullback Dallas Freeman even added a receiving touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Despite the offensive line allowing five sacks, it was a banner day for most of the offense.

Clemson added two late touchdowns against UConn’s second unit to make the final more respectable, eventually settling in at 52-31. Both of those late Tigers scores were Ruiz touchdown passes to Nelson-Smith and Jarquis Dortch. Ruiz had a fine day with four touchdown passes, completing 31 of 46 passes. However, the two interceptions, as well as the inability to get a rushing attack going (74 rushing yards total), hurt Clemson immensely in the final two frames.

Clemson made the final score respectable late with a pair of touchdowns to Nelson-Smith (LEFT) and Dortch (RIGHT).

“They’ve got a great team for a reason, but we’re young and we’ll be back”, commented Clemson head coach Jeff Brohm after the game.

“Past UConn teams have a knack for turning the switch on when it becomes necessary”, commented Jordan Brown after the game. “Let’s hope we can start games better moving forward. Otherwise.. We keep playing like that, we’ll have a lot of fun.”

By all accounts UConn, while acknowledging a good win against a good opponent, seemed ready to move on to next week’s game, as a certain coach’s dad might say. Next week UConn will prepare to face Boston College in the Battle For New England Part V. This year’s game takes on more meaning for the Huskies after BC stunned a then-top ten ranked UConn squad last year in East Hartford. The game will be broadcast in primetime on NESN and NBCSN next Saturday.

Jordan Brown looked a little more mobile than usual on his eight yard rushing touchdown.
