That's what I do for anyone from Vermont LOL. Black should be a pretty good player for a pretty good program, might have a lot to cheer for in coming seasons.

Been quite the turnaround for us the past few weeks, the team has really caught fire lately. I think we have a chance to stay atop the polls for awhile if the defense continues to do enough and we avoid catastrophic injuries. Or, knowing this team, we could go cold, lose three straight and leave the polls completely. That's the fun, though! Playoff or bust!

There are some CACs who simply click with their new schools once they get promoted, and Foxke appears to be one of them. ASU has been largely average for the entirety of the dynasty, but you're having a tremendous season on the field (the only loss being to my USC boys in overtime) and off it (building a decent recruiting class). I foresee a real nice rivalry for years to come when it comes to Pac-12 South supremacy.

That said it's not looking good for Pitt.

Some big prospects on the board, I know you have a lot of talent at receiver that may be leaving so that is definitely the biggest potential get of all of those guys visiting. Maine is funny, I've found some good talent there, even if they don't have a ton of prospects. I have 2 different defensive ends from Maine now that both came in a 4 stars, oddly enough.
RE: Being #1.... Yes, being at the top is always nice, but especially so I think because we do not live there. One of the best parts of the dynasty lies within the "struggle" of not being a playoff team every year. Despite all of our postseason successes, I believe this is only the second time we've reached #1 in the regular season - the other time being the final full week of the 2020 season. In both of our national title runs I believe we reached #1 only in postseason play (Champ Week, end of bowl week, respectively), and we lost the 2020 National Title. I'm a follow the trends type of guy, so maybe hitting #1 right now is not a good sign LOL.. but we'll see.

Concluding with some nerd math, assume 10 seasons times 14-ish weeks in a regular season, that's ~140-150 possible weeks, and we've been #1 for about two of them, which is about 1% of the dynasty. Pretty nuts, if you ask me!

RE: Pitt... they have a few things going for them:
    - Two good, shifty running backs who can spread out our sometimes shaky run defense.
    - They have veteran coaches who have played us before.
    - There are no real weaknesses on their defense, needed to slow down our offense.

Of course, this does not guarantee they'll pull the upset, but they have the potential to at least keep things interesting. Jordan has been great lately, but I figure the other shoe will have to drop eventually.

RE: Recruiting... I think I've stated this before, but we could easily lose at least seven of the eight wide receivers we currently have between now and the start of next season. Three graduates (Devin Brown, Marcus Rodgers and Drew Talley), two likely early NFL Draft entrants (Byrom, Speier), two possible cuts/transfers (John Pratt, a freshman from Texas who could get homesick, and Darrell Jones, a meathead who is not developing). Reserve Hunter Carson is the only guy I didn't mention, and he too could leave as a grad transfer, being a fourth year junior next fall and not a local kid; if he wants to start for a smaller school near home he could easily do that.

Long story short, we need all the receiving help we can get, so Jones' commitment is certainly huge. Still trying hard to land Tabor, Webster, Skalnick, Henry Hodge (five-star pipeline guy) and others who are late adds and will be discussed later. Collin Miranda plays free safety now, but could easily move back to receiver or play both ways if we end up thinner then anticipated. We have a plan, but must continue to hit the trail hard to see it come to fruition.

Thanks as always everyone! I have the Pitt game almost ready to post, hopefully it will be up early this week!

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

      19 --- 2-4, 0-3

      (1) 52 --- 6-0, 3-0

      UGLY

UConn turns unexpectedly close game into blowout with pair of third-quarter pick sixes; Jordan survives shaky three interception day while Huskies need to sort through life without star wide receivers Devin Brown and Lonte’ Speier following “cheap-shot” injuries

Linebacker Marlon Bush Jr. turned the game upside down with this wacky pick six off a deflection.

Looking at a final score of 52-19, one could easily assume that UConn dominated Pitt in all facets of their October 14th afternoon matinee, pushing their record to a bowl-eligible 6-0 and reaffirming their place as the #1 team when the first College Football Playoff poll releases this weekend.

Dig a little deeper, however, and we find one of the ugliest games of the entire dynasty to this point, in terms of on and off the field content. Despite winning by 33 points, UConn was outgained on offense, 462-422. Pitt threw for more yards and only rushed for 20 fewer than the Huskies. Some of the flaws that UConn had shown in the opening three weeks of the season, such as turnovers, inconsistent defense and reliance on the big play reared their head once again, as UConn may have been beaten today had they not changed momentum early in the second half. Now, the top-ranked Huskies will have to deal with injuries to star wide receivers Lonte’ Speier and Devin Brown, and aftermath of inflammatory comments from riled up offensive coordinator Dan Orlovsky in his postgame press conference.

The UConn offense that had been so vaunted over the past three weeks did not operate at peak efficiency for much of today’s game, thanks to a motivated Pitt defensive unit. Neither side hit the scoreboard in the first quarter, and Pitt held close thanks to a 23 yard touchdown pass from Jake Daughtry to backup tight end Mautuma Lealofi. UConn assumed a 17-7 halftime advantage when Jordan Brown threw his first touchdown of the day to Lonte’ Speier on a 20-yard pitch and catch about a minute before the break.

It was an uncharacteristic day for the Heisman candidate Brown, as he threw four touchdowns but added in three interceptions. For the first time in a while, Jordan was outgained by the opposition, his 306 yards falling short of Daughtry’s 378. His three total interceptions also more than doubled his total through UConn’s opening five games (just two).

Corey Webb (LEFT) and Maqueese Graham (RIGHT) each picked off Jordan Brown - a total of three INT’s for the Pitt defense.

With the game still close at intermission, UConn got fortunate in the third quarter when they began to pull away on the strength of, ironically, their defense. The young unit came through in the clutch with consecutive pick-sixes. The first came after Pitt received the opening kick and marched to about midfield when Daughtry threw an out route to Niclas Byrom. The young redshirt freshman had five drops on the day, and none would prove more crucial than this one. Daughtry’s pass bounced off Byrom’s hands and into the waiting arms of linebacker Marlon Bush. With a clear path to the end zone, Bush strolled in for a 60-yard interception return touchdown. UConn would put the game away when Daughtry threw another pick six on the very next play from scrimmage, this time to freshman linebacker Payton Ash. UConn assumed a 31-7 lead and had the game well in hand by the middle of the third quarter. Things started to get ugly from there, however.

Freshman sensation Payton Ash followed Bush with a pick six of his own. The game got ugly after that, though.

Midway through the third quarter, Speier made a catch and got up slowly after a gang tackle from a few Pitt secondary members. He limped off the field, later to be diagnosed with an undisclosed foot injury. Struggling to move, Speier did not return and will try to practice this week. He has been officially ruled doubtful for next week’s game against Duke. Devin Brown exited the game a few minutes later with an injury of his own, getting clotheslined by safety Daquan Harrison on a clean, though dangerous, helmet to shoulder hit. Harrison led all defenders with 14 on the day, but a visibly angry Orlovsky started to lose his cool at that point. Barking at officials, he needed to be restrained by other assistant coaches.

The game continued, Pitt adding touchdowns in the third and fourth quarter from Daughtry’s passing touchdown to Tim Spencer and from his legs. Jordan Brown threw for two touchdowns in a four minute span, both to Chamarkelle Byrom. UConn now held a 45-19 lead and most onlookers simply wanted to go home with five minutes left in the game. The teams had combined for five turnovers and had not necessarily put on an offensive clinic.

The final blow came on UConn’s final touchdown drive, when interim starting tailback Mike Molden exited the game with minor back spasms. Thankfully, he will be fine and play next week. Devin Brown, however, was not so lucky. That hit broke Brown’s collarbone, and will hold him out for at least the remainder of the regular season. The collarbone was the same injury that has sidelined star running back Ashanti Swift.

It is assumed that UConn ran up the score late, simply to make a point about their displeasure with Pitt. Jordan capped off a slightly lackluster day by tossing his fourth touchdown with two minutes remaining, a fade to Byrom from two yards out.

Byrom caught three touchdowns for UConn, and maybe some more responsibility too. With Speier and Devin Brown out for the foreseeable future, the athletically gifted Byrom may need to become the top option in the passing game.

Mercifully, the game ended at 52-19 in favor of the top-ranked Huskies and no more external damage was done to UConn. The barbs did not end at the final horn, though. “That was absolutely DISGUSTING the way Pitt played in the second half”, noted Orlovsky. “I don’t care how upset you are, you SUCK IT UP and move on. You don’t [expletive] injure our best players with a series of [expletive] cheap shots”.

Coach Steve Belichick was more stoic in his presser, stating that UConn “will be back next week, where we will play Duke”.

UConn’s unfortunate injuries will test the depth of their wide receiver group. Speier is UConn’s top possession receiver, while Devin Brown, despite constantly flying under the radar, is an exceptional slot man that UConn does not have a tailor made replacement for. In the interim, the Huskies will move Byrom to #1, return man specialist Marcus Rodgers to the slot and little used senior reserve Drew Talley at #2 on the other side of Byrom. Hunter Carson and Darrell Jones are youngsters who might see snaps as well. Alex Paige also remains healthy from his tight end spot.

“We’ll see what we’re made of next week, but it’s nice to have support in our corner”, noted a surprisingly calm Jordan Brown after the game. With UConn’s schedule soon to heat up, channeling anger and injuries might be the biggest test yet.

Pitt held close thanks to great efforts and plays from Biletnikoff Award candidate Quennell Bell (LEFT) and redshirt freshman Nic Byrom (RIGHT).

Lonte’ Speier’s phenomenal junior season will be on hold for at least one week after an injury in the second half.

Yeah the injuries have not fallen our way this season, but thankfully we've been hit at our deepest position. We'll need to learn to live without these guys sooner or later, anyway.

If we can get through this rough patch, at least, we'll be in good shape for a title run, so fingers crossed!

MESSAGE FROM YOUR AUTHOR: I hope you all have had a wonderful spring so far. I feel bad for taking another unexpected leave, but school *shrug*. So it goes. I FINALLY got a day off today, and finals are near. Hopeful to get the rest of the season posted over the next few weeks. Good thing too, as I finished the regular season back in January. (mild spoiler: We've got a quite a doozy of a playoff race up ahead).

The break has also allowed me to think a bit more about the future of the dynasty, and I think I'm near a decision - we'll talk about that later. Looking forward to the rest of the season here and getting caught up with all of your great work. Can't wait!

                      INTERCEPTIONS: Perry Brown (DUKE), 2
                      Linzell Tyson (UCONN), 4

                      SACKS: Blake Felder (DUKE), 3
                      Tarik Madison (UCONN), 6

                      GURU'S THOUGHTS:

Aside from a run to the ACC Championship Game a few seasons back, Duke has been down for much of the dynasty. After David Cutcliffe retired last year, they made a sensational move to hire the recently fired Jimbo Fisher. Fisher is still a great recruiter, but his in-game coaching has been suspect for years - his only national title (2013 at FSU) came ten years ago now. It might take time, but Duke appears to be on the way back.

As for this season, Duke has been a largely average team; they have talent, but the chemistry is still a work in progress. They sit 3-3 overall with the rest of their ACC slate to come; the Devils lost last week to Baylor.

On offense, quarterback Kyle Everett is capable, but has underperformed this season. Duke’s wide receivers have been hurt and are just starting to get healthy again. Nevertheless, their second target, Ryan Colfax, is still out hurt. Sophomore tailback Venedrick Spain has emerged as a playmaker and the future of Duke’s offense.

Defensively, the Devils boast a plethora of talent: Defensive tackle Curtis Simmons is a former top prep prospect and Alabama transfer, while other veterans Kavon Billingsley and Blake Felder lead the unit. Safety Grantley Spiller and Montez Dupree are tremendous young players, both sophomores. Spiller in particular will play an important role in this game, manning the back end against UConn’s passing game.

This could be a closer game than the line, or any of us, predict. Coach Stephen Belichick tends to have UConn focused and "up" most weeks, but the Huskies have a big showdown looming with Syracuse next week that could easily have College Football Playoff ramifications. There's certainly potential for Duke to be a trap game for UConn.

With Lonte’ Speier and Devin Brown out hurt, UConn will need to rely on unsung veterans more; primarily tailback Mike Molden and senior wideouts Drew Talley and Marcus Rodgers, the latter two making their first starts of the season. If Duke and first-year defensive coordinator Brennan Smith (CAC: bryan3169) can shut down either the run game or the pass game of the suddenly very-banged up UConn offense, Duke could keep things interesting.

If whughes lasted the early years losing at CMU, Coach Jacobsen can hang on a little while longer at ISU. Your numbers haven't exactly been bad, it just has not come together yet, and it seems that OCs will rarely get punished for that. It's also your third season - as long as you finish the year respectably, I think you'll get a fourth year in Ames.

                        29 --- 3-4, 1-3

                        (1) 36 --- 7-0, 4-0

                        DODGING DANGER

Shorthanded UConn scores 22 in fourth quarter, winning touchdown with 90 seconds left to preserve undefeated record, #1 ranking; major ACC implications loom in next week’s showdown at Syracuse

Jordan Brown saved a short-handed UConn squad with a tremendous fourth quarter performance, tossing three touchdowns including the game-winner.

It has not been a good week for UConn football. Already dealing with the absence of star tailback Ashanti Swift, UConn now had to contend with the losses of arguably their two best receivers - deep threat possession receiver Lonte’ Speier and slot man extraordinaire Devin Brown.

The results? Nearly disastrous for the number-one ranked Huskies.

Against a sneaky Duke team without three of their most important offensive weapons, UConn trailed 26-14 after three quarters, narrowly avoiding disaster at The Property with a big fourth quarter outburst en route to a 36-29 win.

Heisman frontrunner Jordan Brown passed for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including the go-ahead pass play to senior utility man Marcus Rodgers with 90 seconds remaining. The Huskies also tallied a late Aaron Brook interception to thwart a last minute Blue Devil comeback bid, barely hanging on for the triumph. The improbable win moves UConn to 7-0 on the season and ensures their hold on the top spot in the playoff rankings for at least another week.

All year, we have questioned if UConn looks like a national title contender, and if you were looking for a gameplan to beat the Huskies, Duke put forth the best challenge so far.

Defensive coordinator Brennan Smith (CAC: bryan3169) had his troops play a smart, conservative pass rush almost all game. As a result of the tighter coverage, Jordan Brown opened the game completing just three of his first ten passes. In the first seventeen minutes of action (almost two full quarters, I play on nine minute halves), UConn scored just one touchdown, a one-yard Mike Molden plunge coming off a Tory Greening interception. Meanwhile, Duke was not able to capitalize on all of their possessions, but certainly did enough. Senior kicker Sam DeGreene booted three field goals (23, 31, 47) and senior signal caller Kyle Everett accounted for Duke’s only touchdown of the first half, an eleven-yard pass to J.J. Barrow.

Duke nearly went into the half with a two-score lead, completely dominating the first three quarters, basically.

Duke seemed poised to command a two-score lead entering the half, but the Devils surrendered a late touchdown pass from Jordan to new #1 receiver Chamarkelle Byrom. That four-yard score kept Duke in the lead, but a stunned Property crowd saw their team being outplayed, down 16-14 at intermission.

Out of the break, Duke kept their foot on the gas. DeGreene’s fourth field goal extended the lead to 19-14, and Smith’s defense kept methodically attacking.

With Linzell Tyson’s option team on the field, young star linebacker Montez Dupree intercepted a Tyson pitch and housed the “fumble recovery”, a 51-yard play that completely shifted momentum. Despite crossing midfield twice, UConn failed to score for the entire period after the fumble six and a short field goal pushed wide right from junior kicker Anthony Ricciardi. The top-ranked Huskies were on the ropes.

Montez Dupree’s fumble interception and score put UConn on the ropes.

Of course, UConn has recovered from bigger deficits than this, but the days of Arkeel Newsome, Ice-Jax, Marcus Bradford and other heroes have long since passed. Jordan Brown showed in that fourth quarter that he’s more than an NFL draft prospect. He’s a leader.

UConn began the fourth quarter with a Rodgers punt return all the way inside the 20 yard line, and Brown took over the offense from there. It took just one play to cut the lead back to one score - an 18-yard pass from Jordan to Drew Talley, the little-used senior receiver who recorded career-highs with eight catches for 96 yards.

After a quick three and out, UConn was back on the attack just minutes later. Talley for 22, Alex Paige for 24 were quick hitters on out routes to push UConn back into the red zone. The very next play, Brown connected with freshman tight end Evan Jeppesen for the nine-yard score. Talley caught the two-point conversion over the top of the Duke defense, and UConn regained the lead for the first time since the opening period, now with a 29-26 lead.

Fifth-string wide receiver Drew Talley (LEFT) and backup tight end Evan Jeppesen (RIGHT) played big roles in the UConn victory, each tallying second-half touchdown catches.

A dazed Duke offense hit the field again and appeared to be looking to score. An Everett screen pass to Joey Ucambrian went for a big 38 yard gain, and the Devils knotted up the score a few plays later on the strength of DeGreene’s fifth field goal of the day. His longest of the day, a 55-yarder for the sensational senior tied the game at 29 with just under four minutes to play.

As UConn has done many times over the years, the Huskies put together a perfect final drive. Jordan Brown went 5-7 on that final drive and gained 18 yards on the ground as well. Rodgers was on the receiving end of the go-ahead score, giving UConn the 36-29 lead. With Duke driving once again, the Huskies defense came through and wrapped up the game, the safety Brook intercepting Everett to wrap up the impressive fourth quarter.

“We need to play better and not get in these situations again”, commented the always pessimistic Stephen Belichick after the game. Jordan Brown was happier about the result. “Who cares, we won!”

“It just speaks to how well we work as a team”, offensive coordinator Dan Orlovsky commented. “Hopefully we’ll be back healthy soon, but I like our chances in any game we play”, Jordan added after another stellar 374-yard, 4-touchdown performance.

With a huge game at Syracuse next week with perhaps an ACC Championship Game berth on the line, it’s a good thing to have confidence. And as long as Jordan Brown is under center, I don’t think it matters who else is out there. Their chances are as high as that still intact national ranking.

Marcus Rodgers (LEFT, winning touchdown) and Aaron Brook (RIGHT, clinching interception) helped UConn on the comeback trail, keeping their CFP hopes alive.

Speier Probable Ahead of Syracuse Game

UConn is slated to get some good news in terms of their injury report list.

Star junior wide receiver Lonte’ Speier (93 OVR) says he feels ready to play this weekend against Syracuse and will be listed as probable on the team’s injury report. Speier exited UConn’s win over Pitt two weeks ago with what turned out to be a deep bone bruise in his right foot and a mild ankle sprain. Listed as doubtful and later downgraded to out, Speier struggled through practice last week and missed UConn’s game against Duke.

Speier’s return is a welcome addition for a UConn lineup already depleted by injury. Fifth year senior slot man Devin Brown is slated to miss the rest of the regular season with a foot stress fracture, while star tailback Ashanti Swift remains out recuperating from a broken collarbone. Fifth year senior Drew Talley started in Speier’s place last week, marking the first time in their three years on the team that Speier and Chamarkelle Byrom were not the two starters at outside receiver. Speier, Byrom and Marcus Rodgers at slot will be the starters against Syracuse and moving forward until Brown returns.

The North Carolina native Speier has had a sensational start to his junior year, recording 45 catches for 784 yards and six touchdowns. Despite missing last week’s game, those numbers rank amongst the nation’s top five in each category. Teaming with Byrom, the two have proven to be the best wide receiver combo in UConn history, both projecting as first round selections in this spring’s NFL Draft. Speier is on pace to break or approach all three of UConn’s major career receiving records by season’s end: his 162 catches ranks seventh all-time, 2,806 yards ranks sixth, and 22 touchdowns ranks tied for fourth.

UConn receives commitments from Ecker, Steutel, Stanley

UConn’s quest for depth in recruiting continues as the Huskies have received three more verbal commitments. Springdale, Louisiana native Stephon Ecker (76 OVR), a top-rated center and four-star prospect, announced his intentions of enrolling at UConn and joining the team for the 2024 season. Ecker could compete to be a day one starter, entering UConn with 80 PBK, 79 RBK and 81 IBK. He is not a great athlete, so there will be concerns about Ecker’s ability to develop.

Having been deep for several years at the running back spot, UConn is looking to address the future now rather than later. A commitment from McCandless, PA native De’Ante Stanley (69 OVR) will help their cause. Ranked the 29th best tailback prospect, Stanley comes in as a “balanced” running back with 83 speed and 79 agility ratings. Stanley also boasts solid power statistics, but below average catching attributes (for long-time dynasty followers, an adequate comparison would be Ron Johnson).

UConn has also landed an important commitment in future backup quarterback Cooper Steutel (69 OVR) from Washington D.C. With Jordan Brown a very likely #1 overall draft pick this spring, UConn will only have two true quarterbacks on the roster next fall in Kelly Carlson and Alex Ferguson. Steutel’s commitment gives UConn a solid development prospect to play on the third-string practice team for a few years. At 6-foot-1, 211 pounds and a balanced quarterback (79 THP, 77 THA, 66 SPD), Steutel projects as a Bryant Shirreffs-type quarterback, one who will excel in the pocket but can make a few plays with his feet as well if needed.

UConn has also received two tough decisions against their favor. The biggest one is the commitment of 4-star offensive tackle Luke Stivers to Michigan State. Stivers is a quality, college-ready player who could have competed for a starting job immediately on the other side of left tackle Cole Monroe. At worst, he would have been the sixth man off the bench to aid UConn's dangerously thin and inexperienced offensive line.

The other hit was five-star wideout Vonquez Tabor electing to stay out west and go to Washington. Tabor was one of many pass-catchers on UConn's board, however, and that loss does not hurt as much.

                              Here's our updated commits/misses board:

                              New Additions

                                Guru's Thoughts:

This is our third meeting with the Orange since joining the ACC, rekindling a rivalry dating back to the Big East days some ten-plus years ago. The Orange have a sensational head coach in Bryan Cook and run the dreaded, evil, triple option offense that has historically given me nightmares. However, recent results indicate that we might have overcome that weakness as we have turned our last two meetings against Syracuse into blowouts.

Getting Lonte’ Speier back is absolutely huge for us, as the pass game looked a bit off without him last week. Jon Jones is a good cornerback, and his return means we’ll force perpetual matchup nightmare Chamarkelle Byrom onto significantly shorter players in veteran Deshon Lewis and freshman safety Donjae Harley in the back. As usual, our gameplan will be to try and control the tempo through the air. Syracuse’s secondary is alright, but nothing special. If the Orange have anything to look forward to, it’s that Devin Brown is still out. Last week’s game showed just how much we miss Brown as he recovers from a foot stress fracture. His agility, speed and route running combo simply cannot be replaced in the slot. Marcus Rodgers is fast, but a burner and not a great route runner. Drew Talley is simply too slow, despite a strong game last week. Nevertheless, we should have enough to overpower the ‘Cuse defense here.

Don’t let the defensive statistics fool you. Our rushing defense has not been great this year; the UCF game is a great example of how anyone can hurt us, but they ran with a thumper between the tackles. We have not been tested with this type of offense yet, one that will test the open-field tackling of our outside linebackers and secondary. Young players such as Payton Ash and Marlon Bush will be vital to our success today as they try and stop Syracuse’s dynamic ground trio of quarterback Ty Weber, senior Justin Jones and sophomore Kornelius Kimmel, a blue-chip future star. The big knock against Syracuse is that their offensive line is very banged up right now, down two good starters. That could play to our advantage.

Syracuse is a very good team that is quickly becoming a national power. They are solid all around. They get the game at home, but fresh off a tough loss to an overachieving NC State team. This might be a closer matchup than the past two years, but I just think that given our past matchup history with this team, and the added boost we get from Speier’s return, will be enough to put UConn over the edge.

                                UConn Flashback

2021: UConn has beaten Syracuse in the Carrier Dome each of the past two seasons. The more memorable game was easily the 2021 rout, a 44-14 pasting in which dynasty legends Luke Williamson and Shav Wade surpassed school records for career rushing yardage and interceptions, respectively. UConn would go on to win the national title a few months later.
