Good luck against ‘Cuse. I think if your front 7 can keep the option inside you’ll be alright, however if they manage to stretch you guys out wide I can see them breaking off some long runs against the weaker guys in the secondary

Thanks as always for your great insights! The key to our success over these guys in recent seasons has been to force them to the air by getting ahead by a touchdown or two early. When we've stopped their rushing attack, it's been with heavy blitzes and linebackers (with good awareness) successfully getting in the backfield (I tend to run more of a man coverage look, liberal with the blitzing). 'Cuse is very hurt on the O-Line, so that could play to our advantage in getting to the backs. However, our young defense hasn't quite seen an offense like this, so that could play a factor too.

You make some great points about their run game. That's the one way I think we lose this game - if Jones and Kimmel break off outside runs. With the four man defensive front we've switched to this season, we should have enough punch to keep them honest when they go straight up the middle. Syracuse doesn't have a burner, but Jones and Kimmel run with a bit of power and that could be dangerous against our more athlete-minded secondary.

I made a joke out of safety Tony Rush for years because he couldn't tackle, but our current group is no better. Collin Miranda is a former wide receiver, Linzell Tyson is still literally an "athlete", Tory Greening is a stick. Syracuse presents a unique challenge for our current lineup and play style. Syracuse has played us tough in recent years, and you just never know with the option. Outside of last week, though, our guys have played pretty well since the well-documented early-season struggles. I have to like our chances against anyone as we push toward November and the end of the campaign.

I hope to have the game posted at some point on Sunday. See you all soon with more UConn football!

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

        (1) 37 --- 7-1, 4-1

        (20) 51 --- 6-2, 3-2

        FLATTENED

Syracuse, keyed by 400 rushing yards, pummels top-ranked UConn; Huskies, Jordan Brown suffer setbacks in CFP, Heisman chases

Syracuse linebacker Rob Weiss (LEFT) tallied a defensive touchdown that put the Orange up 17-0 early. They never looked back.

Before UConn could blink, linebacker Rob Weiss was sprinting to the end zone. Weiss intercepted an option pitch, scooping and scoring to give Syracuse a 17-0 lead just four minutes into Saturday’s ranked showdown. UConn had run just four offensive plays before finding their way into the deficit, two of those plays ending in turnovers (the other being an Anthony Preston interception). With the defensive touchdown, Syracuse had top-ranked UConn, and their College Football Playoff hopes, by the tail. The beginning was just the start of a frustrating day for coach Stephen Belichick, whose troops struggled to catch up in what turned out to be a 51-37 defeat for their first loss of the season.

Syracuse would score 41 points in the first half to UConn’s 21, seemingly running and scoring at will. While we’ve seen plenty of trademark UConn comebacks before, this one was simply too tall a task. Syracuse had UConn’s number all day long and rightfully earned the rejuvenating victory a week after being upset by NC State.

Throughout most of the game, and especially late trying to snuff out a UConn rally, ‘Cuse dominated the Huskies defense with a punishing and relentless ground attack. Coach Bryan Cook sent his running backs up the middle consistently, and they proved to be stronger and more successful than UConn’s defensive front, which at times just looked tired. Fullback Edmond Johnson did a lot of the damage, powerfully rumbling for a total of 180 yards on just 17 carries (10.5 ypc).

Syracuse had no trouble running over UConn’s front seven. Eugene Pope (LEFT) ran for a score, while fullback Edmond Johnson (RIGHT) led the way with 180 yards, appearing seemingly unstoppable at times.

Top tailback Justin Jones added 93 yards on ten carries while sophomore Kornelius Kimmel added 101 on just seven carries. Third-string tailback Eugene Pope and backup fullback Brandon Reid added touchdowns of their own in the first half in addition to the efforts of quarterback Ty Weber; it was a true team effort for the Orange. The key to their success? Get into the second level. Despite being down two offensive line starters, the Orange had no problems creating lanes and forcing UConn’s secondary into making tackles, which they struggled doing. The Huskies also had several miscommunications on defense, overpursued on blitzes, and simply looked lost in trying to stop the option. Syracuse maintained command early, and were able to control the tempo of the game from start to finish.

UConn even struggled defending the passing game for one of the first times this season. Dynamo sophomore corner Linzell Tyson was torched in coverage multiple times, including one failed press coverage scheme in defense of Dion Stewart, who scored on a 76-yard pass play about two minutes before halftime. Tyson was actually benched for part of the second half as Kelvin Cooke relieved him so he could clear his head. The move worked, but not well enough.

Despite only allowing ten points after the break, veteran defensive coordinator Don Pellum commented that “We couldn’t stop a nosebleed” - apt, as Syracuse piled on 636 yards of offense in total. UConn’s efforts were further hampered by the loss of fifth year senior Jeremy Broadricke, one of UConn’s two starting defensive tackles. The oft-injured and inconsistent Broadricke left the game injured and did not return, leaving UConn’s front seven composed of five underclassmen at one point. The youth showed against the option savvy.

Sophomore Linzell Tyson is a star and very popular, but struggled today and was briefly benched.

The struggles and head-slapping went beyond the defensive performance, too. All year, we have commented that if UConn’s lethal offense could not get going on any day, the Huskies would be vulnerable to defeat. Today, we saw this happen. All three of UConn’s turnovers came in the first half, and with the poor play of the Husky defense, they needed to score every time they came onto the field.

That was simply too much to ask, and there were not enough opportunities. The UConn pass offense did what they could in the second half, but it was simply too late at that point. Their drives and sequences looked rushed, even when they did score. This allowed a tired defense back on the field. Jordan Brown did throw for an always impressive 402 yards and three touchdowns, while UConn’s top three receivers, Lonte’ Speier, Chamarkelle Byrom and Marcus Rodgers, all tallied at least six catches and 90 yards apiece. Speier even chipped in a kick return touchdown. Nevertheless, UConn looked rushed and were forced to throw more than they likely wanted. Those strong performances also could not offset UConn’s one-dimensional offense. The Huskies gained just 15 yards on the ground, and were shut down by a dominating performance from the Orange front seven.

If there was any highlight for UConn, it was that their receivers played well. Lonte’ Speier returned from injury to post 200 all-purpose yards and a score, while Marcus Rodgers (LEFT) and Chamarkelle Byrom (RIGHT), contributed big as well.

Left end Tralice Traylor led the way with four sacks, and slammed the door on UConn late in the fourth quarter with a fourth-down sack of Brown, while Lonte’ Speier sprinted wide open down the sideline in a last-ditch comeback effort. Traylor recorded four sacks in total, turning UConn’s best O-Lineman, Korey Davis-Love, into a turnstyle. Traylor helped end a few UConn drives on the day, which played a key role in fending off a late rally.

“Everything we did today worked”, commented Orange head coach Cook after the game. “They always have a great team, but after the past two meetings this one feels real special for us”. Syracuse’s 51 points marks the fourth-most scored by a UConn opponent in the ten seasons of the dynasty (the record is 59 by Ohio State in that strange Cactus Bowl from season five).

The loss knocks UConn from the ranks of the unbeaten, and will move them out of the top four of the playoff polls, where they had previously held the top spot. Syracuse’s win also opens up the ACC race, with a quartet of one-loss teams now vying for second place in the conference.

Each of UConn’s last four games will likely represent an elimination game for the Huskies. Stranger things have happened; UConn won their 2021 national title with two losses. However, given the national landscape this year and the glut of one-loss teams across the country, one more loss will likely eliminate UConn from the ACC and College Football Playoff races. UConn will look to get back on track with a visit to South Bend and a date with defending conference champion Notre Dame next Saturday.

Syracuse played a solid defensive game, keyed by Tralice Traylor’s four sacks (LEFT) and Anthony Preston’s early interception (RIGHT).

Ouch. The defense really got torched, I’m surprised they were that successful up the middle though. I knew it would come down to the secondary making stops but I really thought your front 7 would do better in the middle of the field. The 3 turnovers of course don’t help either. Still time to climb back up the ranks into the playoff though

I think their success was just a case of our young defense and linebackers without a lot of awareness (at least comparable to teams we've had in the past). They looked lost, and Syracuse knew what to do.

Another thing to keep in mind that I neglected to mention in the game recap -- we don't really have any run stopping D-Linemen, big 300-pound maulers that could have neutralized that type of run game. Honestly, I haven't had a player like that in a long time (maybe T.J. Newell, and he graduated a long time ago now). Guys like Jeremy Broadricke, Tarik Madison and Demetris Sands are all athletes, pass rushers (275-280 pounders), not so much big bodies that can plug a gap. This sort of embodies the very noticeable ideology shift in terms of the type of players we have had under the Belichick regime. For a longtime follower like you, take a look back at a roster and a random game from the early years. It's not hard to see that we have better pure athletes now than we did during the Diaco era; back then, we just had smart players who filled roles exceptionally. Great collegians, but not standout NFLers (Newell is a great example from the early years - quiet statistically but rarely made mistakes on-field). The opposite is true now; we have guys who can fly around the field, are wicked athletic and have gobs of potential, but are still a bit raw in terms of all-around talents.

That sort of small detail plays a role as well, especially in this case when you have 300-pound O-Linemen and 250-pound fullbacks to contend with. And of course, you're right in saying that our offense basically needed to play perfect and failed to do so.

Unless we face Georgia Tech in a possible ACC Title Game, we luckily won't have to face the option again and we can resume with regularly scheduled programming, if you will. Even if we do, we'll have some experience under our belt for later. We still have three solid ACC teams up ahead (ND, NC State, UNC), so yeah lots of time and opportunity up ahead to get back into the playoff/ACC race. One loss won't kill us - as I said in the game recap, our 2021 national title came with two losses - but with a different national landscape this year, it's do or die now. I think this is the best chance we'll have to win another national title for a few seasons (or maybe our last best chance), and I'm really hoping to capitalize.

Certainly a tough game to play from home. I've mentioned countless times over the years that the option has really given me difficulties - recently, I felt as if I'd finally started to get a handle on things but clearly today's game proved me wrong. I think the youth on our defense was really exposed for the first time in that game because we finally needed to rely on them. All day, lots of bad reads, poor tackling, we just never got it together.

I'd have to imagine our guys will come out more focused from here out as we basically play in a do or die scenario for ACC/Playoff chances every week. I know that some followers have been bullish and others bearish on our chances this year, but I still think we have a playoff run in us. Would hate to see that chance go to waste, especially with the core of the program likely turning pro/graduating at the end of the year.

              Thanks as always fellas!

So I accidentally went to the last page in the thread and saw the score before being able to read the game recap and I audibly gasped! I can't believe how dominant Syracuse was offensively. You've definitely had some up and down performances this season, but that was incredible. They were running seemingly at will on you, and then even when they sprinkled in the odd pass play here or there they seemed to go for big yardage as well. Just a tough day all around, and I'm sure having basically no traction in the running game on your side of the football didn't help things at all. Hopefully Swift can battle back from his injury to give Jordan a little bit of breathing room in the backfield.

Still just one loss and to a quality team at that, so it's not the end of the world just yet! Hopefully this is a good wake up call to the team and they can build on it the rest of the way.

                    Guru's Thoughts:

This is our third year in the ACC, and we currently boast a 2-0 record against the Irish. We played a great game against them last year in the snow that helped revive our dim CFP hopes (which would be dashed the next week anyway). The Irish have liked passing the ball against us, which has worked to our advantage (see: the 2021 blowout). Nevertheless, the Irish always have good athletes, good tailbacks and a lot of talent. While Notre Dame is just 4-4 this year, we need to be careful against them as always.

The Irish are led by their fourth different starting quarterback in four years, this time senior Tommy Tyler. Tyler is more of a pocket quarterback, so the Irish will likely run a traditional offense. He is flanked in the backfield by three good running backs in Thad Bainbridge and youngsters Lontae Resser and Marlin West. Eboniray Potter and Tavon Rice make up a solid receivers group filled with speedsters. Their offensive line is solid as well.

Their defense is a bit suspect, but they boast a few quality young starters, including freshman defensive end Boone Michaelson and star linebacker Elias Sheffield, a sophomore. Fifth year senior Terrance Downing is one of the most disruptive nose tackles in the country. Safety Brydon Richwalski is a personal favorite for his hard hitting and ballhawking tendencies.

The challenge for the Irish has been putting it all together in games. They have all the talent, but have problems keeping focused at times, which explains how they got blown out last week against a very average Navy squad. This presents a challenge for us because they have a lot to play for (home game, step toward bowl eligibility) and could be very motivated against a team of our caliber. The Irish have struggled to put points on the board, and the defense, statistically at least, has not been special. This might be a close game solely because of the seemingly equal levels of talent on the board, but if UConn can execute well and show last week’s loss is behind them, the Huskies have good odds of coming out on top and staying ensconced in the national landscape.

                    PAST SKIRMISHES
Click on the years below to relive past UConn-Notre Dame games!

2022: UConn got back into the playoff race with a thrilling victory in a snowy East Hartford last year. UConn's run game led the way, with Ashanti Swift leading the way with three touchdown runs.

2021: Then-true freshmen Lonte' Speier and Chamarkelle Byrom both recorded over 100 yards receiving as UConn notched their first win of the season, en route to an improbable national championship run.

Senior DT Broadricke (back) likely out for season

Senior defensive tackle Jeremy Broadricke has been ruled out for at least the remainder of the regular season with what has been diagnosed a “strained back”. The Los Angeles native exited last week’s game with the lower back injury and did not return. He will need a few weeks to recover and a few weeks to get back to game-ready, a process that could take up to seven weeks.

Broadricke could return for UConn’s bowl game or the College Football Playoff, but team doctors will have a better idea in a few weeks. Nevertheless, Broadricke will be out for the rest of the regular season. Broadricke has started every game this season in a 4-3 scheme, but this injury news will likely force UConn to switch back to a 3-4 defense, which they may have been contemplating anyhow after last week’s dreadful performance against Syracuse. Tarik Madison will start inside, and linebacker Marshawn Dortch will make his first start this week at one of now two inside linebacker spots. Backing up Madison are third year sophomores Ethan Buckingham and Matt Tellers. Buckingham has been productive off the bench at various points in his career but coaches felt they wanted Dortch to start instead.

A former four-star prospect, Broadricke was thought to possibly become a multi-year starter and steady contributor on the defensive front. However, his career has not panned out as such. Sitting out his first two years as a backup to T.J. Newell and Brent Howard, Broadricke was never able to assume a steady spot in the lineup. He ended up being a bench player in 2021 and platooned with Madison last year before an injury forced him out of action for half of the season. After a strong summer camp performance this year, it looked like Broadricke had finally found his footing and seemed poised to break out. However, he recorded just eight tackles this season, with three sacks and a forced fumble as well. He has just four career sacks and eleven tackles for loss.

LOL, I empathize with the avoiding spoilers bit (I have the same problem watching Jeopardy! now). All that matters to me is that you're still following along!

Anyways, yeah Syracuse was just a case of we didn't show up and they did. Even when we did lower their scoring output in the second half, it was too late and we couldn't capitalize. It was bad all around and we deserved to lose. If any future opponent can establish the run game (ex: I think Notre Dame can), we have the potential to lose again. Run defense is clearly our achilles heel with this team for reasons I mentioned in response to whughes earlier this week - we're athletic these days, not big. We saw the same thing against UCF earlier this season. Ryan Grafcheck, a big burly back, ran roughshod on us. While we won that game, we trailed big at halftime.

Swift's absence has clearly transformed our offense, and I'd say for the better. Molden has been around for a long time, and he's never been an every-down back like Swift. Swift might return late in the season, but he probably will not be 100% again until champ week/our bowl game(s). We're lucky that Jordan has stepped up and emerged as the leader of the offense. With all that has happened since Swift's injury, I'd say that our season rests on Jordan's shoulders at this point, no matter if Swift is on the field or the sidelines.

Knowing the Belichick way, our guys will be well prepared for each game moving forward. I still think it's playoff or bust this year, so there's still an awful lot to play for and a lot of time.

                    Thanks as always moose!

LOL, yeah still going at the pace of a glacier. Anyways, good to hear from you as always Young, and I hope all is well. Luckily for you, you haven't missed much here lately as I took another break in the spring to finish out the school year and now I have sort of fallen behind on my planned summer schedule of one game a week. As a result, I've fallen behind on everyone else's work again as well. Certainly not planned, but unfortunately that's what has happened.

I'm not really sure what I plan to do in terms of posting moving forward, as I have had the rest of the season (up to the bowl week) played for quite a while now. I just need to do all the writing and graphics stuff. At this point, I think I just want it done and posted (maybe doing a short recap post for the last five weeks), but we're still in the middle of the playoff race. In that sense, it's not really fair to just ignore the last third of the schedule when we're still in the chase for a massive bowl game and maybe another national title. Regardless, you'll want to know how we got there (or didn't get there).

We'll figure it out. Stay vigilant friends, we'll reach this season's climax eventually. I promise.

I'm doing very well man, I'm gonna touch on that when I update my thread, as the stuff that has been going well is actually exactly why I haven't had the time or energy to even turn on my console in months lol. And glacier pace or not, at least UConn is still going. I'm gonna get back into mine very soon I think, done school after Tuesday, but it's not gonna be the rich, detailed stuff like you and some others do. Probably just do one big season recap with minimal graphics at the end of each year.

                              CLOSE SHAVE

UConn lets Irish hang around thanks to horrid performance from Jordan Brown, hang on late to stay alive in ACC, CFP races

All-American return man Marcus Rodgers once again bailed out UConn with a late touchdown.

                              The roof caveth in?

A week after a poor performance and a loss to Syracuse on the road, UConn continued their travels to an always tough Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend. Suffice to say, they’ll be more than happy to go home again next week.

UConn, despite leading for most of the game, allowed Notre Dame to hang around until the very end, only putting the game away with an onside kick recovery late in the fourth quarter. Putting the team on his back in recent weeks, Jordan Brown further showed how important he is to UConn’s success, either propelling the team to victory or pushing them toward defeat. Jordan threw four interceptions and lost another goalline fumble; those turnovers nearly ended up spelling the difference in a 34-31 Huskies victory that just barely keeps UConn alive in the race to the ACC Championship and the College Football Playoff.

A week after a thrashing at the hands of an ascending Syracuse squad, UConn looked to be in trouble right from the jump this week as well. The Irish took the opening kickoff and marched down the field with little difficulty, as Tommy Tyler completed three passes of a dozen yards or more and eventually connected with Tavon Rice on a short play action bootleg for the game’s opening touchdown. 7-0 Irish. Uh-oh.

Fortunately, UConn recovered and answered right back on their first drive. As has been the case for much of the season, the Huskies advanced downfield with a quick, frighteningly effective aerial assault. Alex Paige for 13 and 15, Lonte’ Speier for 16 and next a 15 yard touchdown to tie the game. UConn would take the lead on their second drive after fielding an Irish punt, with All-American return man Marcus Rodgers setting the Huskies up nicely near midfield. Two big pass plays to Speier and Drew Talley set up a Mike Molden touchdown plunge, giving UConn their first lead of the game.

Toward the end of the first and into the second frames, however, the game would start to get ugly. Kicker Drew Sorenson missed a 58 yard field goal for the Irish, and the next three drives for either side resulted in interceptions, including one UConn drive where Darrick Sanich intercepted Jordan in the end zone. Tory Greening and Travis Hall each recorded interceptions for their respective teams later in the period before the Irish finally found the scoreboard again. Tyler passed to tight end Trevill Branson, a 16-yard catch and run over the middle tied the game. Todd Pickens intercepted Jordan for the third team takeaway for the Irish before Sorenson connected on a 31-yard field goal to take the lead by three.

Darrick Sanich (LEFT) and Todd Pickens each contributed to possibly Jordan Brown's worst outing in a UConn uniform, while simultaneously keeping their team alive in the game.

UConn would get on track with a 62-yard catch and run from Chamarkelle Byrom, and option quarterback Linzell Tyson broke off a read option to the right side, a 13-yard touchdown sprint that gave UConn the lead back right before the half, 21-17.

The halftime talk from coach Stephen Belichick, according to some, was not very pleasant, but UConn did not get the message, as it appeared. The first drive started out alright with Jordan connected with Speier for a 30-yard pickup, but threw an INT to linebacker Bryant Fine, Jordan’s fourth of the game. Fortunately, the offenses for both sides stalled out for awhile and UConn would extend their lead late in the quarter on the leg of Anthony Ricciardi’s 41-yard boot. UConn held a slim, and ugly, 24-17 lead.

Despite Tory Greening’s second interception of the day a few plays later, UConn again could not take advantage and score. Both teams missed field goals and punted a few times before Ricciardi connected again on a 29-yard try to give UConn a ten point advantage with 3:30 on the clock. Notre Dame eased back into the game with a quick touchdown drive, however. Tyler, who passed 61 times on the afternoon, completed big passes to Branson, Isaiah Gay and J.J. Parker before Tyler finished the drive himself with a short rushing touchdown and pulled the Irish back within three points.

The biggest play of the game for UConn would come immediately after, though. Rodgers, the fastest player on UConn’s team, returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards to the house, re-extending UConn’s lead to ten points. Those would prove to be critical points, as Notre Dame marched downfield and scored again when Branson tallied his game-high eighth catch of the day on his second touchdown catch. The Irish would need to recover the onside, but could not do so, meaning UConn would barely hang on for a victory. The Irish, much like UConn, had trouble scoring in the middle stages of the game and that cost them. Despite boasting one of the nation’s better running backs in Thad Bainbridge, their negligence to use the ground game more could have cost them. Bainbridge ran for 93 yards on just 19 carries, while Tyler threw 61 times. Tyler was very effective, completing 40 passes for 413 yards and three touchdowns, but his two interceptions and a handful of missed field goals ultimately proved costly.

Lonte' Speier (LEFT) and Linzell Tyson (RIGHT) each scored in today's contest. Speier is on pace to break most, if not all, of UConn's single season and career receiving records despite missing a game to injury earlier this year and despite being just a junior. He led UConn once again with eight catches and 113 yards today.

UConn was not much better in what was not the most attractive game to watch. Jordan’s four interceptions likely will not happen again, but today’s game further exemplifies the team’s reliance on him and the rest of the passing game. UConn’s receivers continue to play tremendously, Speier leading the way this week with eight catches and 113 yards. Concerns arise, however, when Mike Molden can only gain 50 yards rushing on 16 carries. Tyson added 54 yards, but much of that came on that one touchdown run. Sophomore starter Ashanti Swift, still on the mend from his broken collarbone suffered early this season, will sit out one more week and be evaluated after that. “Gotta do better,'' commented a once-again demure Stephen Belichick.

Thankfully, UConn will get a chance to do so when they return home next week, but good teams still remain as UConn enters the last third of the regular season slate, including an overachieving and usually tough NC State squad, next week’s opponent. A ranked North Carolina team on the road also looms, as does as a rivalry game with Louisville.

With today’s win, UConn moves to 8-1, 5-1 in ACC play. The Irish fall to 4-5 and need two wins in their final three games to secure bowl eligibility. The Huskies will almost certainly welcome a return home to East Hartford next week to take on NC State after a rough road trip. Despite a loss this week, the 5-4 Wolfpack sit one game back of second place UConn in the ACC standings.

AUTHOR'S NOTE: Thanks again for hanging in there everyone. I have a Cheese-style life update thing written that I might post based on how I'm feeling -- basically just to explain why I'm making excuses and why I haven't finished the season here yet LOLOLOLOL.

Anyway, I want to finish up the season before school gets back in full swing. If I have my way, expect a few posts this week and a game or two. With any luck, I can at least get bowl week played before I go back to school in two or three weeks, then wrap up the season on here early this fall as time permits. We've only got three games left plus champ and bowl weeks if necessary, so we're getting close. Many thanks again everyone, I can't wait to share the rest of the season with hopefully an increased audience now that football season in real life is starting up again.

                              All my best,
                              J.D. /Guru

And glacier pace or not, at least UConn is still going. I'm gonna get back into mine very soon I think, done school after Tuesday, but it's not gonna be the rich, detailed stuff like you and some others do. Probably just do one big season recap with minimal graphics at the end of each year.
Very good points! Certainly some positives from keeping it simple, I thought about doing the same.... but I owe it to you guys to finish out the season with the same depth and quality I always do. Glad all is well with you.
