Unless my phone is tripping, two of the CAC updates got posted out of order. But whatever, glad to see my Sun Devils might end up as Pac-12 South champs. They look stupendous.

I'm so glad this is back up and running! It's one of two dynasties I follow. And, like, you have our empathy and understanding with your absence. You don't have to share anything you don't want to, but of course we'll listen.

      Good luck against Notre Dame!

Glad to be back! Looking forward to finally getting the rest of this season up for you guys to enjoy. I still have to get through the bowl week myself, so I'm excited to see what happens.

The real life stuff is actually kind of neat, which is why I considered posting that to a group of sports fans. I know a lot of folks are probably aware I'm a student, but you don't know what slightly unusual and definitely interesting things I'm up to the rest of the time. Nothing bad I promise! I do feel kinda bad that my posting is so sporadic because this project has meant a lot to me and I love having you guys follow along, but yeah it is what it is.

Let me know which CAC updates looked off. I think I caught minor conference record errors in the Coach Baumann and Coach Gilbert lines, which I'll fix when I get back to the console because I'm OCD about these things. If I missed something else, though, please let me know. I made the mistake of not taking a few more minutes and typing out all of the information many months ago .. now I'm rightfully paying the price. This is why I rely on you guys sometimes!

As for ASU, you're still having a tremendous season and do still have an outside shot at the Playoff. Your senior QB Mike Miles has been among the nation's best (he's a quarterfinalist for many of the nation's top offensive awards). HOWEVER, you're going to need USC to lose to have a chance at the Pac-12 Title.. and if you get there, you'll have to go through a really good-looking Oregon squad, who has already clinched the North IIRC. USC beat you guys very early in the season and both teams have gone unbeaten since. SC has a non-conference game in Week 12, but they can clinch the South with a loss from you or a win in Week 13.

        Thanks as always!!

UConn Recruiting: Huskies land 5* WR Webster, 4* Athlete Richard

It’s no secret that UConn is probably set to lose all five of their top receivers at the end of the season, so any news about replacements is probably going to be good news. And after a win against Notre Dame, UConn landed two more commitments to their remodeling at the position; good news indeed. Joining the Huskies’ 2024 recruiting class this week are five-star wide receiver Shomar Webster (85 CTH, 87 RTE, 82 SPC, 87 SPD) from Florida and four-star athlete Jurdel Richard from South Carolina (90 SPD, 75 CTH, 82 RTE, 82 ZCV).

Webster is the highest rated recruit in the fold for UConn so far, and he’ll join Rymone Jones Jr. as pure receivers who will come to Storrs/East Hartford in the fall. Richard, an athlete, will likely play wide receiver because of the positional need, but has the ability to play both ways as a corner or safety. Both Richard, 6-foot-2, 218 pounds, and Webster, six-feet, 192 pounds, figure to be possession receivers in the mold of Diaco-era UConn star Rashad Harris.

Offensive coordinator Dan Orlovsky spoke about the new commits. “Obviously you’ll never be able to replace the group we have now. No one can walk in the door and be an athletic freak like Chamarkelle [Byrom], an incredible possession receiver like Lonte’ [Speier] or a burner like Marcus [Rodgers] or Devin [Brown]. But if we can build some depth and add as much talent as we can, we’ll be just fine. With the three guys we have now and more that we’re still working with on our recruiting board, we’ll be alright when next fall comes around.”

UConn may not be done recruiting at the position either, with other notable uncommitted names including blue-chipper Henry Hodge IV, Willis Underwood, DeAndre Carrington and Davante "Junior" Hall, a junior college prospect. Other athletes remain on the board as well, including four-star prospect Tremayne Woodard, another possible two-way player.

PROJECTED 2024 WIDE RECEIVER DEPTH CHART (as of November 9, 2023)

          Belichick mum on NFL rumors

In the third and final year of his initial contract and with a ton of success in just a short time at his very first head coaching gig, head coach Stephen Belichick has been a popular target for NFL teams in need of the right head coach to put their teams over the top. Belichick and athletic director Bobby Valentine have attempted to come to terms on an extension for about two years, but have not done so yet, spurring rumors that Belichick could be looking to move on at season’s end.

Belichick has been approached numerous times by the New England Patriots, his dad’s team for many years and the team that he once worked for as safeties coach. The Patriots have faded back to being a largely average team in the NFL landscape under coach Marvin Lewis, and Lewis could be looking to retire soon. Other teams in the east that could be in the market for new head coaches this offseason include the Giants, Jets and Brooklyn Beats (formerly Buffalo Bills). It might be worth noting that Belichick is a Rutgers alum.

Belichick, unsurprisingly, has not said a word on those rumors (or anything else, for that matter) and we have to figure we’ll know more around mid-January after bowl season wraps up and when Black Monday passes in the NFL. If Belichick does opt out at UConn, it seems like a near certainty at this point that offensive coordinator Dan Orlovsky would receive the promotion to head coach. Orlovsky has been a vocal and active leader on the coaching staff and a respected “face” for UConn football. Orlovsky has also helped develop UConn’s offense into one of the most explosive in college football history behind quarterback Jordan Brown and stud wide receivers Lonte’ Speier and Chamarkelle Byrom.

            Team Leaders:

PASSING: Nicky Burdak (NCSU): 102-218, 1390 yds, 14 TD, 5 INT

Mike Molden (UCONN): 122 rush, 598 yds, 9 TD

RECEIVING: Bryan Hughes (NCSU): 37 rec, 446 yds, TD
Lonte’ Speier (UCONN): 61 rec, 1018 yds, 7 TD

            SACKS: Cardarian Bolden (NCSU), 3
            Tarik Madison (UCONN), 5

            Guru's Thoughts:

NC State can be a tricky team to evaluate. Like Notre Dame last week, they have lots of talent. Also like Notre Dame, they can struggle to put it all together on the field at times - we’ve won handily both times we have played the Wolfpack over the past two seasons. It’s also worth noting that Bo Pelini has proven his worth as a very good recruiter, hauling in several prospects that UConn has targeted in past years; notable names include RB Ardarius Watts, CB Javion Hartfield, LB Nyheim Manuel and OT Brannon Bishop, among others - they had the 12th best class in the nation last year with the top overall prospect too in wide receiver Dion Hayes, whom we’ll see today. This is a program that has a bright future.

The Wolfpack have been a fringe top 25 team in recent seasons, but have emerged as a surprise contender thus far in ACC play, despite remaining unranked. Though they lost last week to hurt their chances a bit, they are still very much in the conference championship hunt and have a lot to play for this week. A win for NC State would basically lock up Georgia Tech in one ACCCG slot, and create a free for all for the second.

The Wolfpack boast a very average quarterback in senior Nicky Burdak, a serviceable dual threat who hasn’t been tasked with doing too much this year. Redshirt freshman Torrance Potter is clearly the future of this team and I’m frankly surprised Pelini has not turned to him yet. The ‘Pack have lots of athletes on offense, and Jamarkus Dutton is one of them. Entering the year as a backup to the now injured DeMario Ross, Dutton is just a sophomore who has already passed 1000 yards rushing this year. Dutton can do a bit of everything on the ground and is supported by a serviceable, veteran offensive line. Freshman wideout Hayes, the nation’s top recruit last year out of high school, will be an all-league caliber player before long. Bryan Hughes and Spencer Greene are very dependable, if not unspectacular pass catchers, while Barrett Dickerson is already among the ACC’s best at the tight end spot.

NC State still boasts a few quality pieces on defense, headlined by future NFL safety Tuarez Langley, a star playmaker. Donjae Hinton and Cardarian Bolden can cause disruption on the defensive front, but Hinton is coming off a shoulder injury and his snaps may be limited today. The rest of the defense, while without a glaring weakness, are largely average, like much of their offense. The Pack simply grind out victories. To win this game, NC State will likely need to rely on Dutton (and Watts) to carve up the UConn front seven, and Langley will need to be everywhere patrolling the back end and UConn’s high-flying pass game. This UConn team is down after a loss and close win in consecutive weeks. NC State will need to come out and set the tone early to keep them down; one of their star players creating a turnover or busting off a long touchdown could go a long way.

UConn will need to apply pressure to Burdak, which has sometimes been easier said than done. UConn has three players with five or more sacks on their D-Line (Hughes, Madison, Sands), and all three will be key players today. With Marshawn Dortch in the lineup now, UConn will have a little more speed to try and defend a heavy run attack, should that happen. Getting an early lead will force NC State to the air, and UConn will have a much better shot to win with Burdak throwing 40 times as compared to Dutton running 30. UConn opens a heavy favorite in this game, but don’t be surprised if the result even falls a little closer than that.

            PAST SKIRMISHES
Click on the years below to relive past UConn-NC State games!

2021: UConn outscored the Wolfpack 31-7 in the second half en route to a 48-24 win, the Huskies' fifth straight. UConn moved to 8-2, and would win the ACC and National Championship shortly thereafter. Luke Williamson (32 rush, 172 yds, TD) and J.P. Byers (16, 112, 1) led the way for the UConn offense.

2022: Jevon Sapp's fumble six spurred a UConn rout, a 52-13 win as both sides played their ACC opener. Jordan Brown and Lonte' Speier connected for three touchdown scores to lead the offense.

            ACC Standings/Clinching Scenarios

Georgia Tech will clinch the ACC's top seed with a win over Clemson this week regardless of what else happens - they only have one ACC game remaining after this week and they hold a one game lead over UConn, two ahead to the rest of the field.

UConn needs to keep winning, or else they fall behind Syracuse. UConn will be in the driver's seat with conference losses by Syracuse and North Carolina at any point (UConn plays North Carolina next week, followed by last-place Louisville to close the season).

Syracuse will benefit most from a UConn loss - they hold the head-to-head tiebreaker against both UConn and UNC, and a UConn loss puts the Huskies with two losses along with the rest of the conference. The Orange would move to #2 if both they and UConn win this week, followed by a UConn loss to North Carolina next week. NC State is the only team Syracuse does not hold the H2H over.

North Carolina needs to win this week. UNC can still pass UConn with a win in their matchup next week, but they'll need a Syracuse loss (Syracuse owns the H2H tiebreaker).

NC State will do themselves a world of good with a win over UConn. They would then hold the H2H against the Huskies, in addition to Syracuse, whom they beat in Week 9, and move to a tie for second place. The Wolfpack would benefit from a North Carolina loss as well, as the Tar Heels beat them in Week 10 and would move a game ahead of them. NC State finishes the year with Notre Dame and Pitt.

Clemson needs a win against Georgia Tech this week, then chaos. A loss, and they're out. They do not own a H2H against UConn, and have not played the ACC's other top teams.

Florida State has also not played the ACC's other top teams, and basically need everyone else in front of them to lose. They lost to Georgia Tech last week.

              (6) 72 --- 9-1, 6-1

              SHINING STARS

UConn, led by big three on offense, gets back on track with 72-28 clobbering of NC State; Jordan Brown sets UConn record with six touchdown passes, two away from single season record

UConn’s “Big Three” (from left Jordan Brown, Speier, Byrom) led the charge in a big way this week.

As it turned out, UConn just needed a change of scenery.

After a tough road trip resulting in a loss and close win last week, UConn returned to the Loudest House in the East and put on a show for the ages. Coach Stephen Belichick’s squad firmly reasserted themselves in the ACC race and the College Football Playoff race with a historic 72-28 drubbing of a solid North Carolina State team on Saturday night. This is the (mind-boggling) second time UConn has posted 70 points this season, previously scoring 76 against Boston College in October. The Huskies are averaging 47.5 points per game this season, most in the nation and believed to be a school record.

The stars of the show, once again, were UConn’s three superstar juniors, quarterback Jordan Brown and the two best wide receivers in school history, Lonte’ Speier and Chamarkelle Byrom.

Brown made a nice statement as to why he should be the #1 pick in this spring’s NFL Draft by putting up perhaps the best single-game passing performance in UConn history. After tying the single-game touchdown record three times in his two years as a starter, Brown finally upped the record (five) with a sizzling 430-yard, six touchdown, no interception performance. After tonight’s game, Jordan now sits at 34 touchdown passes this season; he is one away from tying Isaac Jackson’s single season record, set two years ago, and is within striking distance of Ice-Jax’s 3,998 yards, currently the single-season record. Jordan now moves to fourth in UConn history for touchdown passes at 66.

The athletic Byrom tallied ten catches, 154 yards and two of Jordan’s touchdown passes, while the possession receiver stud Speier put up 127 and two scores on just five catches. Both have now surpassed 1,000 yards on the season and are nearing many major season and career records in just three years (and with as many as five more games left to play this season). Not to be forgotten was athletic tight end Alex Paige, who added seven grabs for 89 yards and a score.

Thanks to Brown and the superb play of everyone on the offense, UConn took the lead early in the contest and coasted to the finish line. UConn’s passing game piled up a startling 14 plays of ten yards or more in the first half, and shredded the Wolfpack defense with ease both on the air and on the ground - Mike Molden, Jon Shaffer and Jordan all effectively moved the ball the old-fashioned way. UConn went up 28-0 early in the second quarter on the strength of three touchdown passes and a Jordan Brown fumble on the goalline recovered by freshman left tackle Cole Monroe.

UConn got on the board in an odd way - Jordan was on his way to a rushing touchdown, but fumbled at the goalline. Freshman left tackle Cole Monroe played heads up ball and scooped up the rock for his first career touchdown.

NC State was able to close the gap to 35-21 after a Jamarkus Dutton touchdown run and two big touchdown plays from quarterback Nicky Burdak, who played a solid game with 340 passing yards. That was the closest NC State would get to UConn's score, though. A few of UConn’s scoring drives, including Speier’s 94 yard kickoff return touchdown, ended quickly. This allowed the Wolfpack defense to stay off the field and rest, while UConn’s defense put in a bit of extra work on the field.

When UConn’s offense was on the field, however, they looked fresh and continuously sucked any momentum out of the Wolfpack. Brown engineered another 30-0 run at the end of the second quarter and through the third, highlighted by a 46 yard touchdown toss to Byrom and a 56 yard pitch and catch to Speier down the right sideline, perfectly executed both times. This second large burst by the Huskies put the game well out of reach early. Entering the fourth quarter, UConn had fully dominated en route to a 65-21 advantage. The Wolfpack got on the board again with a 65 yard touchdown pass from Burdak to Bryan Hughes; Hughes passed 130 yards and was among NC State's top receivers; tight end Barrett Dickerson led with a solid nine grabs for 80 yards.

As UConn’s reserves entered the game, the scoring slowed, but the backups usually provide some excitement anyhow. This week, UConn put a wrap on the scoring with a 56-yard pick six from reserve linebacker Scott Sarria, allowing UConn to cross the 70-point threshold for the second time this season. Sarria was the big star of the reserve defenders in a solid day all around; Kiel Hughes led with three sacks while Demetris Sands added a QB stop and young linebacker Marshawn Dortch led the Huskies with eight tackles.

NC State, despite getting blown out, had quite a few highlights to pick from. Spencer made a nice touchdown catch (LEFT), freshman Dion Hayes made some nice plays (CENTER), and quarterback Nicky Burdak played a solid game through the air and the ground (RIGHT).

Scott Sarria was the top reserve in the one quarter the backups played, recording an interception and returning it for a touchdown.

“It just felt great to get in a zone like that,” commented Jordan after the game. I have such great chemistry with all of our wide receivers, and their talent simply overpowers everyone else. It’s so much fun.”

“When our offense, and especially our passing game, is cooking like that,” commented offensive coordinator Dan Orlovsky, “we look unbeatable. Plain and simple.” Coach Stephen Belichick added that he’d like to get the running game more involved, but realizes he needs the ball in the hands of his best players, and that means “allowing Jordan to do what he does best.” Luckily for him, the offense is about to get even more lethal and maybe more balanced next week because starting tailback Ashanti Swift will reportedly be cleared to play next week. He has been out since mid-September with a broken collarbone. Reports show that senior slot receiver Devin Brown, also out with a broken collarbone, is nearing a return as well, though we might not see him until the end of the regular season at the earliest.

UConn (9-1, 6-1) will look to keep things rolling in their last big test of the regular season next week, a night game on the road against a North Carolina team that sits just outside the top ten in the CFP rankings. A win for UConn and a Syracuse loss will clinch a spot in the ACC Title Game for the Huskies; number-one Georgia Tech, still undefeated, clinched the top seed this week with a win over #17 Clemson.

NC State falls to 5-5 and 4-3 in ACC play.

Some solid defensive plays occurred as well, despite the two sides combining for 100 points. Future NFL safety Tuarez Langley (LEFT) decks Mike Molden, while Kiel Hughes (RIGHT) looks for some elbow room after recording the first of his three sacks on the night.

UCONN RECORD WATCH (more possibly to come):

              Jordan Brown - 6 touchdowns/game - UCONN RECORD
              Jordan Brown - 34 touchdowns/season - 2nd (1st: 35, Isaac Jackson)

              Lonte’ Speier - 25 receiving touchdowns/career - T-1 (25, Rashad Harris)
              Lonte’ Speier - 9 receiving touchdowns/season - T-5 (1st: 12, Rashad Harris)
(ED NOTE: Chamarkelle Byrom is close behind Lonte’ for most, if not all, of these stats, but I do not have those exact numbers for him right now)

Jordan Brown doesn’t show much in terms of emotion, but he’s had a lot to be excited about this season, and especially tonight.

UConn Newsflash: Starting RB Swift set to return against UNC

Swift broke his collarbone on this play in UConn's Week 4 matchup against Houston.

UConn is finally about to get some good news on the injury front. After missing the past six games with a broken collarbone, sophomore starting running back Ashanti Swift (89 OVR) is set to return to the field this weekend ahead of UConn’s important ACC showdown with the twelfth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels.

“He’ll be in the backfield for us on our first play,” noted head coach Stephen Belichick in a short press conference. Belichick did not indicate how many snaps Swift will receive on Saturday night, but it can be assumed that he will share carries with senior Mike Molden, who has started each game in Swift’s absence. Offensive coordinator Dan Orlovsky implied that Swift was not quite fully healthy, but healthy enough to play as needed and that the coaching staff will be careful with his usage.

UConn’s running game has taken a back seat to the aerial attack in Swift’s absence. While Jordan Brown, Lonte’ Speier and Chamarkelle Byrom are torching the UConn record books through the air, Molden has chipped in only 658 yards rushing and nine touchdowns this season on 139 carries. While solid numbers in terms of per/carry average, the yardage total is a bit disappointing considering recent 1,000 yard seasons or close from Swift, Luke Williamson and J.P. Byers in recent years. The run game combined for about 430 attempts among the top four tailbacks last year, meaning the run game is on pace for a 25% reduction in playcalling by the end of this season.

Swift, a former five-star recruit from New Jersey, ran for 312 yards and two touchdowns on 69 carries in the three games prior to his injury. As a true freshman last fall, he ran for 982 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Senior slot wide receiver Devin Brown, also out injured through the second half of the season with a broken collarbone, is not quite ready to return and will be reevaluated after UConn's season finale against Louisville in two weeks.

UConn adds four more to ‘24 Recruiting Class

After their most lopsided home victory in nearly a century, UConn has received commitments from four more recruiting targets to add to the 2024 recruiting class.

Leading the way this week is four-star athlete Tremayne Woodard (78 OVR) from Michigan. Woodard can do a bit of everything, with solid all-around ratings in the run game (93 CAR), receiving game (78 CTH, 77 SPC, 82 RTE), and coverage (80 MCV, 84 ZCV) with solid athleticism grades as well (87 SPD, 87 ACC). Woodard will likely be needed in the secondary, and could be a solid option as a big cornerback, as he stands at 6-foot-2, 204 pounds. Based on need, though, expect Woodard to land at safety, where he could be a starter from day one.

Three-star, 6-foot-1, 193-pound safety Sabian Sims (68 OVR) joins Woodard (we assume) in the new secondary room, though he is much more of a raw talent (57 MCV, 63 ZCV, 90 SPD, 83 ACC). Sims comes from a new UConn pipeline state in New Hampshire. Safety has been a quiet spot in recruiting in recent years, but UConn will need to fill both of those starting roles in due time. Free safety play has gotten a bit worse since four-year starter Ross Sinclair graduated after the 2020 season. Tony Rush struggled through two years, and converted wide receiver Collin Miranda has been just okay in his first year as a starter. He has been rumored to play both ways next fall when UConn’s receivers are all reportedly turning pro or graduating, meaning that another free safety could be helpful. Aaron Brook, a three-year starter at strong safety and nickelback, will likely turn pro in the offseason, meaning that starting spot could be up for grabs soon as well. This means that both Woodard and Sims will have chances to play early in their careers; Sims might need some development, but could be a nice piece of UConn’s future in the secondary, while Woodard will be a centerpiece of the backend for years to come.

Trey Kelley, a 6-foot-1, 204 pounder from Brockton, Massachusetts, will add to UConn’s running back stable, which is sure to undergo some personnel changes in the near future. Kelley is a four-star recruit but a bit on the lower side in terms of overall rating (67 OVR) and will likely redshirt when he arrives on campus. Kelley is a solid athlete with 94 SPD, 83 ACC and a solid mix of power and finesse moves, but does still need some work (55 CAR) and is not much of a receiver, luckily not a huge need in the UConn offense. However, if Ashanti Swift leaves school after his junior year as he is expected to, Kelley could compete for a starting role in his second year. Kelley joins De’Ante Stanley as newcomers to the UConn backfield in 2024.

Local big man and 6-foot-6, 261 pound offensive guard Dashaun Braden is the latest offensive line project to join the UConn fold. The Huskies have struggled mightily recruiting along the line more than any other position on their team in recent years, and Braden will be the next in line to try and earn playing time at the guard position. Braden will be helped by the fact that UConn is set to lose at least six offensive linemen, either starters or depth players, allowing Braden to possibly make the two-deep as a freshman. However, like many other past offensive line prospects, Braden is very raw and will likely need a few years to have a chance at being an effective lineman (61 OVR, 71 PBK/RBK).

                          * UConn is scheduled to return only eight total offensive linemen, including RT Korey Davis-Love, who might turn pro after this season. This includes starters at left tackle, center and right tackle unless Davis-Love turns pro. Other linemen are currently on the recruiting board, and their battles will likely stretch into the offseason.

Wow, just wow. That's the type of stat line that QBs (and NCAA video game players) dream of.

Glad to see this thing still going strong my friend!
To pass 60, 70 etc. points is rare enough, but the fact that we've done it now TWICE this season is rather unreal.

I'm glad the struggles of the early season have sort of faded away. When Jordan is on, there's no denying he's on. Obviously he has been helped a lot by the obscene level of talent we have at our skill positions, but considering that a few important guys have been injured at times this year, Jordan has done a great job rallying the troops. There's little denying that he has really become a leader this season, just as I expected him to when he first committed a few years ago. When he plays like he did last week and when everyone will be back healthy in a week or two... we are certainly a hard team to beat.

And I don't think that we've seen Jordan's best game either.

                          Thanks as always Geezy!

Georgia Tech has already locked up the top seed in the conference title game, so yeah if we win out, they're our opponent in what will basically be a Playoff quarterfinal game.

However, we NEED to win our last two games to get there. We're a game ahead of Syracuse and North Carolina, but we do not hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Syracuse and will fall behind 12th ranked UNC if we lose to them this week. They are a good team, and we get them at night at their place, so we certainly can’t check off a win just like that. If we beat UNC though, our last game is against a baaadd Louisville team that we probably have a 99% chance of beating.

Obviously we can't look too far ahead just yet, but Georgia Tech gave us one of the best games in the dynasty's history two years ago. I would LOVE a rematch and that game could be just as good with similar stakes as last time.

                          Thanks as always!

                              GURU’S THOUGHTS

This will be our last big test of the regular season.

North Carolina has been a nice resurgent story this year, climbing well inside the Top 15 of most major polls this season after years of mediocrity. Their resurgence has undoubtedly been led by senior quarterback Matt Ferwerda, who has had an incredibly efficient, Alex Smith-like season. The Heisman contender has thrown just one interception in his first ten games against 25 passing touchdowns. He is an able dual threat with a solid supporting cast at the skill positions.

Tim Watkins and the electrifying Antoine Greene Jr. are a great one-two punch at running back. This could be trouble for our defense, which has struggled against the run this year. If we can jump out to a lead early and force Ferwerda to the air, we could be in good shape. True freshman Rondell Downs, who turned down UConn on national signing day last year, will be a name to watch today as the slot wideout.

Left tackle Keith Burkett (62 OVR) is the only major weakness on UNC’s offensive line, and he’ll have a tough matchup with Demetris Sands, who leads us in sacks as a true freshman.

North Carolina has a good defensive unit as well, and they excel in pass defense (rated 4th best in the nation). Redshirt sophomore Lionel Norcrest, a future NFL player, leads the unit and will be matched up against Lonte’ Speier in this contest. Classmate Von Davis and nickel corner Brian Bell will team up to work on containing Chamarkelle Byrom. If they succeed, UConn might need to go to the ground game more. Our rushing attack gets a nice boost this week with Ashanti Swift returning to the lineup, and he’ll split carries with Mike Molden.

Awaiting our run game, however, is a talented linebacker in Mo Kalini’i, another future NFL player. Kalini’i leads the Tar Heels in tackles and can be a major gamebreaker as a pass rusher and hard hitter. He will help the Tar Heels stay motivated.

This is a huge game for both sides. UConn will move one step closer to clinching the second spot in the ACC Title Game if they win, while a North Carolina loss eliminates the Tar Heels. A win for UNC will mean they move to, effectively, third in the ACC standings. The Tar Heels will be wearing the “Big Game Black” uniforms and will be fired up. We need to stay focused, and try and carry as much of the momentum from last week as we possibly can. If our offense can pick up where they left off, we have a good chance.

UNC is breaking out the Blackout uniforms for a Saturday night showdown.

                              ACC STANDINGS RACE

Georgia Tech has clinched being the “home team” in the ACC Title Game.

UConn remains in second, one game ahead of Syracuse and North Carolina. A win and a Syracuse loss will clinch the second spot in the ACC Title Game. A loss and UConn effectively drops to fourth, as they would not hold the tiebreaker over Syracuse or North Carolina at that point.

Syracuse needs to win out, but is rooting for North Carolina this week. Syracuse holds the H2H over UConn and UNC, so if Syracuse and UNC win out, Syracuse will then take the second spot over UConn and UNC via tiebreaker.

North Carolina needs to win out to stay alive, and then will need a Syracuse loss in either of their last two games. No more, no less.

Everyone else is eliminated from ACC Title Game contention.

                                KING JORDAN, THE FIRST

Jordan Brown (45-54, 517 yards, 7 TD’s) breaks eight game and season UConn records en route to best individual performance in school history; aided by four 100-yard receivers, Huskies pull away late in blowout of Tar Heels, sit one win away from ACC Title Game with last-place Louisville up next

Jordan Brown once again showed his undeniable, breathtaking talent in his second record-shattering performance in as many weeks.

Anyone who bought a UConn record book before the season started can officially light it on fire.

After perhaps the most virtuosic performance that anyone donning a UConn uniform has ever known, there is officially no doubt over who the king of UConn football is: Jordan Brown.

The three-star rated Texan quarterback out of high school was dubbed by former Coach Bob Diaco in his comparisons list to Tom Brady. Maybe Aaron Rodgers was more apt, but no comparison to any NFL player can accurately describe what Brown accomplished in a primetime showdown against a nationally ranked North Carolina team, lauded for their top-ranked pass defense.

Brown shredded the Tar Heels defense to the tune of 45 completions on 54 attempts (83%), for 517 yards and a school-record seven touchdowns as the Huskies pulled away for a 52-20 triumph. Brown’s completions, passing yardage, total yardage and touchdowns are all single-game UConn records; his 54 attempts fell one short. In the process, Brown managed to break four season records, with more certainly to come. Tonight’s performance means that Brown has passed for 947 yards and 13 touchdowns over UConn’s last two games.

What might be more unbelievable, or at least unexpected, about the final score or individual performances, is that UConn actually trailed for a good portion of the game and did not begin to pull away until the third quarter. UConn drew first blood as their opening drive stalled out, fortunately resulting in a short Anthony Ricciardi field goal. North Carolina took the lead shortly after the start of the second period on a short touchdown run from Tim Watkins, capping off an eleven play drive that got the sold-out Kenan Stadium crowd rocking. The Tar Heels extended their lead to 10-3 on a Tony Richter field goal, but UConn was able to tie three minutes before the half after Brown ripped off five completions on six throws, the last being an out route to tight end Alex Paige that went for a 16-yard touchdown.

Alex Paige (LEFT) caught two early UConn touchdowns. Lonte’ Speier (RIGHT) broke UConn’s career receiving touchdowns record in today’s contest in just 2 and ¾ seasons, whilst using all of his incredible possession receiver skillset.

Taking over again after a quick UNC three and out, Brown engineered a quick touchdown drive with a series of quick medium-range throws, ending with a short six-yard pass to Paige in the end zone. UConn ended the first half blitz with one last touchdown before halftime following Tory Greening’s interception of Matt Ferwerda deep in plus territory. It took just four plays for Brown to rattle off a third straight touchdown drive; completions of 13, 2 and finally a 19 yard play over the middle to senior speedster Marcus Rodgers. UConn suddenly held a 24-10 advantage entering the half, all three touchdowns coming in a span of just three minutes.

UConn faced two slip-ups in the second half. On UConn’s first possession of the third quarter, the Tar Heels stripped the football away from Jordan as he was about to throw, and nose tackle A.C. Anderson scooped up the ball. Anderson ran the fumble recovery back 24 yards for the touchdown, and the Tar Heels were within a touchdown just like that. They appeared poised to tie when Jordan made his only mistake of the game, a poor throw that was intercepted by safety Sean Bates, but that was the closest North Carolina would get. Their next drive stalled out, and UConn pulled away after that.

A.C. Anderson’s fumble recovery touchdown return almost helped North Carolina get back in the game; their offense just couldn’t capitalize.

Jordan capped off a touchdown drive with a five-yard pass to Lonte’ Speier, a touchdown catch that broke UConn’s career receiving touchdown record for Speier. The Tar Heels responded with a 58 yard field goal from Tony Richter, keeping UNC within 11 points, but UConn added another Speier touchdown catch, and a turnover on downs forced by a Tarik Madison sack sucked the air out of the Tar Heels. UConn would score on their final four drives in the game and coast to a 52-20 victory.

It was a career day for several members of the UConn offense. We already touched on Brown, but all of Paige, Rodgers, Speier and Chamarkelle Byrom passed 100 yards receiving on the day. Paige, Rodgers and Speier each recorded ten catches or more. Even for the defense, several younger players had days to remember. Sophomore linebacker Marshawn Dortch, a recent insert into the starting lineup, tallied ten tackles while freshman Demetris Sands added seven. Kiel Hughes has been hot of late; the redshirt junior recorded two more sacks to run up his team-leading total to nine. Sophomore Ashanti Swift was quiet in his first game back from injury, but was still solid in putting up 69 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Lost admist UConn's offense, the defense made some key plays; Tarik Madison (LEFT) made a critical fourth down stop and several other stops behind the line of scrimmage, while Tory Greening’s late first-half interception (RIGHT) helped UConn pad their halftime lead.

“Great day all around,” said head coach Stephen Belichick. Jordan Brown added, “You can’t really ask too much more out of anyone, but we just need to go out and do it again next week and beyond.”

North Carolina coach Rick Stockstill noted “that team [UConn] is so dangerous when they get going. It’s incredible that they can score seemingly at will and in a variety of ways. You have to play mistake-free ball to beat them, and though we had our chances, we just couldn’t capitalize. Lots of credit to them.” UNC did play a rather competitive game, but simply could not get their offense going at any point. Ferwerda, a Heisman candidate who entered the game having thrown just one interception this season, recorded no touchdowns and just 150 total yards of offense. Watkins was effective with 94 yards on his 18 carries, but getting behind late in the game meant the Tar Heels needed to go to the air more. Stud sophomore corner Lionel Norcrest led the UNC defense with ten tackles and a sack, while UConn limited star linebacker Mo Kalini’i to just six tackles and a sack.

UConn did all they could do in terms of the ACC race today, picking up the win, knocking North Carolina out of the conference title race as they now sit two games back of UConn with one week of games to play. However, Syracuse picked up a win this week to stay alive. UConn can clinch the second spot in the ACC Championship Game simply by winning next week on their senior day, a regular-season finale against a cellar-dwelling, 1-10 Louisville squad. UConn will fall back to third with a loss and Syracuse win (Syracuse owns the head to head tiebreaker).

“Still a lot to play for,” added offensive coordinator Dan Orlovsky to conclude another great day for UConn football. “We all know about the ACC Championship and the Playoff. But this man [Jordan Brown] needs a Heisman for his efforts. Or something like that.”

Sean Bates’ interception (LEFT) and Tony Richter’s solid night kicking the football (RIGHT) helped UNC stay in the game, but unfortunately not win it.

Chamarkelle Byrom (LEFT) and Marcus Rodgers (RIGHT) contributed heavily in a passing showcase.
