        GURU’S THOUGHTS

Our last regular season game this year equates to nothing more than a tune-up, but based on how we have played the last two weeks, there may not even be that much to tune up for. I can easily see this game being one where the starters play just the first half. Ashanti Swift, still nursing his collarbone injury, will be limited today as a precaution, and wide receiver Devin Brown, who is probably ready to return from his own broken collarbone, will be held out. We expect to get ahead early and our healthy starters - especially Lonte' Speier, Chamarkelle Byrom and our defense - to garner a well-deserved break as we prep for a likely ACC Championship Game appearance next week (all we need to do to clinch is win, or hope for a Syracuse loss).

That does not mean we can temper our expectations, though. Our reserves have played well when called upon, especially on defense. I’m hoping that our defensive starters can come out, look strong, and hold Louisville to ten points or so. Payton Ash and Kion East in particular will be important for us, as both will likely be challenged with spying the scrambler Duvont. Both Ash and East have been rather quiet lately after strong starts to the season.

This is a Louisville team that has been bad for years and last won the ACC ten years ago (2014 in our universe, their first year in the conference). They have understandably gone through a lot of growing pains this year in particular with first-year head coach Chris Novak, a former UCF coordinator, and redshirt freshman quarterback in the talented, but still young, dual threat Justice Duvont. The rest of their supporting cast is solid, but largely unspectacular; this is a team that will need a few more years, some patience, and some good recruiting to return to being a contender.

The Cards have had a lot of trouble scoring this year, and a lot of trouble keeping opponents out of the end zone as well, two stats that do not bode well for your chances against our UConn team. We boast one of the highest scoring offenses in college football history, and against a bad opponent, I'm looking for 45-50 points once again. Star defenders Justin Osbjornson, a smart, Luke Kuechly-esque linebacker, and corner Tyree Lewis will have a tall task in leading the Cards defense today, but both are players that impress me.

Swift (Collarbone) to see limited action; Devin Brown out

Sophomore running back Ashanti Swift made his return to the field last week against North Carolina after sitting out for over two months with a broken collarbone. He got his feet wet last week with just under twenty touches in an important conference game, but this week is a bit different. Considering that Louisville is a much weaker opponent and all UConn needs to do is beat the one-win Cardinals to play in the ACC Championship Game, Coach Belichick announced that if Swift sees the field at all in today’s game, he will be limited to allow for more rest ahead of the possible showdown with Georgia Tech.

Offensive coordinator Dan Orlovsky added, “it’s all about getting everyone healthy for the Championship Game and the big bowl games ahead. We know we can win with who we have, so .. just need to focus on doing as well as we can today.”

Orlovsky mentioned that this is why wide receiver Devin Brown, still out with his own broken collarbone, will sit out this week completely and return for the ACC Title Game. Mike Molden will start at running back and Swift, should he play, would come off the bench. Marcus Rodgers will continue to fill Brown’s starting role.

        ACC STANDINGS RACE

Georgia Tech has clinched being the “home team” in the ACC Title Game.

UConn clinches the "away" team designation in the ACC Title Game with a win or Syracuse loss.

Syracuse holds the head to head over UConn. They need to win and hope for a UConn loss.

Everyone else is eliminated from ACC Title Game contention.

            (4) 52 --- 11-1, 8-1

            17 --- 1-11, 0-9

            FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS

UConn scores 50+ points for third straight week as Jordan Brown tosses five more touchdowns and Huskies breeze past hapless Cardinals; Huskies turn focus to Georgia Tech, ACC Championship as winner advances to College Football Playoff

Lonte’ Speier (LEFT) and Chamarkelle Byrom (RIGHT) both continued their re-writing of the UConn record books. Speier broke more career and season receiving records, while Byrom played with smoke (I think?).

I labeled this game as a possible tune-up for UConn. But when a team is rolling like this… is there really anything to tune up for?

For the third week in a row, UConn looked like a national champion on the field as their white-hot offense kept humming to perfection and the defense stepped up in a big way. Jumping out to a 45-3 lead, the Huskies cruised to a 52-17 victory over the last-place Louisville Cardinals on a festive senior day in which everyone got to see the field, and the defense succeeded in a test, of sorts.

We expected UConn to cruise just on the strength of their offense, but UConn got off to a relatively slow start offensively, scoring just ten points in the opening quarter. When they got going, however, it was smooth sailing and the usual suspects showed up and shone. Once again leading the charge was junior quarterback Jordan Brown, who chipped in another 447 passing yards and five touchdowns just a week after re-setting his own single game passing touchdown record. This is the seventh time in Jordan’s two seasons as a starter that he has thrown for five touchdowns or more. UConn’s wide receivers stood out once again as well. Marcus Rodgers led the way with nine catches and 131 yards, while Chamarkelle Byrom added seven grabs for 131 and two scores. Byrom was on the receiving end of both of UConn’s touchdowns in the second quarter, the first a standard three-yard catch to cap off an efficient eight-play drive. The second, however, was a 67-yard bomb where Byrom, on a deep fly pattern, completely torched safety Gerren Smith in one-on-one coverage. The rout was on from there.

Mike Molden added a 16-yard touchdown run after the halftime break, while Lonte’ Speier continued his assault of the UConn record books with five grabs, 119 yards and a touchdown of his own. His main contribution to the blowout was a 43-yard touchdown catch where Speier basically ran around two Cardinals defenders after a catch on an out route, starting left, cutting toward the middle of the field and then sprinting back to the left side and past both dazed defenders on his way to the end zone. Speier’s touchdown allowed the junior from North Carolina to pass Mark Didio’s school record for receiving yards in a season, held since 1991. Speier’s total now sits at 1,385 yards with at least two more games remaining, and a maximum of three for a chance to bury the record.

While the passing game shone again, it was a good sight to see the running game find some success after being very quiet for much of the season. Molden led the way with 71 yards on 16 carries with a pair of touchdowns, a strong showing for the Texas native on his senior day. Ashanti Swift received just three carries, being held out as a precaution for most of the game as he continues to work back to full strength from his broken collarbone. He should be 100% for the ACC Championship Game in two weeks.

With not much excitement in terms of the score of the game, many home eyes turned to the defense. How would they fare against a dynamic dual threat quarterback in UL’s Justice Duvont? Consider the query a test for future opponents. Duvont actually had a solid game statistically, throwing for 179 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Duvont was also, expectedly, the focal point of the Cardinals’ run game, adding in 119 yards. Despite the good stats, though, the Cardinal offense struggled to put the ball in the end zone, just as they have all year long. Duvont’s offense scored just one field goal, a 43-yard hit from Broderick Burse, while the UConn starters were in the game.

“Successful day, by my count,” stated UConn defensive coordinator Don Pellum after the game. The tune-up game turned out to be a solid measuring stick for how the defense could handle a dual threat with Georgia Tech’s option team up next. UConn’s rather young front seven looked solid, for today at least. Sophomore linebacker Marshawn Dortch was a key player once again; he added ten more tackles as he continues to be perhaps the hottest player on the UConn defense.

UConn defenders looked sharp all game long; Marshawn Dortch (LEFT) lays a huge hit on Marqueese Smith while Kiel Hughes (RIGHT) wraps up Smith behind the line of scrimmage.

True freshmen Payton Ash and Demetris Sands looked sharp, recording six tackles and a sack apiece. Kiel Hughes added two more, making seven in his last three games after a slow start to his season. Pellum added that “the secondary has been a bit quiet lately, and obviously we can’t let any quarterback run for 100 yards, especially if we want to win in the postseason. But we’ve been good all around lately.”

With the game out of hand and the defensive evaluation a success, UConn’s reserves got significant playing time on senior day. Young linebacker Scott Sarria has impressed in garbage time this season, and added another three tackles over the final six minutes of play. Junior college transfer cornerback Ahmir Rider recorded a tremendous leaping pass breakup. Several seniors got playing time, including a reserve offensive line comprised all of seniors, which got much applause from the hometown crowd. Dustin Mansfield, Mason Godfrey, Joe Sykes, Michael Clark and former JUCO transfer (Connecticut native) Nate Dotson all got to play together over the last five minutes. Blake Kimbrough, a reserve safety and veteran special teams gunner, got some action at his natural position of free safety and made two tackles.

The reserve defense surrendered two touchdowns, both pass play from Duvont to Brad Witherspoon and tailback Marqueese Smithbut no one seemed to mind much, maybe except for coach Stephen Belichick. It was all part of a festive day to celebrate the success of the past four years, a span in which UConn is set to compete in their third conference title game, and has a chance to appear in their third College Football Playoff and national title game.

For all the struggles Louisville has endured in a 1-11 season, scoring two touchdowns late in the game is a positive way to end their season.

“Always nice to get everyone playing time,” Belichick stated after the game. “Lots of work to do, though.”

The third year coach certainly got that right. With the win, UConn clinches second place in the 16-team ACC standings and will advance to the ACC Championship Game. Their opponent in two weeks will be the nation’s number-one ranked team in Georgia Tech, one of the two unbeaten, 12-0 teams in Division-I; the Yellow Jackets clinched their spot in the ACCCG almost a month ago. Georgia Tech is still coached by Paul Johnson and still runs the triple option offense. The game will take place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. With both teams ranked inside the top five of all major polls, the game will figure to serve as a “Play-In” game where the winner will be guaranteed a spot in the College Football Playoff, and perhaps decide the Playoff’s top seed.

UConn finishes the regular season at 11-1, while Louisville, led by first year coach Chris Novak, finish a disappointing 1-11, winless in ACC play.

Backups looked good too. Ahmir Rider, a former JUCO transfer, makes an athletic pass breakup late in the game.

FWIW, UMass is an independent here and independents have incredibly tough schedules. UAB was an independent briefly and I moved them back to the Sun Belt because they just had no chance to be successful. Fact of the matter is that being an independent works for teams like BYU and Notre Dame that are self-sustainable. It's harder for smaller teams. I might move UMass again at some point, but the problem becomes where do we move them? The AAC maybe? I'm not sure.

Lake was a great quarterback for you guys, and a 4-8 season against a tough schedule such as what you faced is a great achievement, I think. It is UMass, after all. You have a couple of young quarterbacks on the team to develop and take his place - one kid named Jamie Wash might be a guy we're talking about in a year or two. At the very least, I think you're building in the right direction. Hang in there!

A lot of close games this past week. Shame UA won the Territorial Cup. But that's a very nice first season for us at ASU. I have faith in y'all at UConn to get past GT. I don't know how you do the playoff set-up every year. I've never done it once and I find it very impressive.

Considering you have been there for six seasons now and with a fair amount of success, I personally would not fire you, but your security looks kind of low (ranked 86th out of 126th offense, and something like 24% security). Still though, I ran a test file a while back and I'd be surprised if RU gives you the boot at this point.

You finished around the tail end of the top 25 last year and you still have a solid squad looking ahead to next year ---- you still have two years of QB Xavier Browne (proj, 88 OVR) and prep star Avante Odom will move to about 84 OVR as your backup. RB Torrance Ardois returns (proj. 90 OVR), former Mackey Award winner Brendan Tangier will be back at tight end after a sophomore slump (proj. 96 OVR), and former top recruit Jerry Stephenson should lead your receivers and take a step forward as a junior (proj. 87 OVR).

You'll also have four linemen back next year for an improved unit (I think you started two true freshmen and a true sophomore this year), plus you have a couple new tackles and guards coming via recruiting to help you out.

I don't think you are going to project as good as some of your teams of years past (seasons seven and eight - '20 and '21, if memory serves, you were in the top 20 all year), but I think you should be better next year; maybe a candidate for eight wins. All it might take is a ten win season and conference championship appearance to catch a team's eye, even if it's a small school in the MAC or something, so don't lose faith yet.

Yeah, you really don't have a lot to complain about in terms of ASU's season except for that letdown at the end. You still have a shot at the New Year's Six, but your ten-win season is already the best season for ASU in the ten seasons of this dynasty.

Mike Miles is gone next year as is 1,000 yard tailback Brett Brooks, but you have a strong QB replacement in Eli Bone, a rising senior who should come up to about a 93 overall. Almost all of your other skill players return too, as do several key players on defense (LB Tre'Shawn Dockett, projected 93 OVR, CB Ryan Gipson, 92 OVR, DE Greg Hamilton, 89 OVR, FS Demetrius Kendrick, 84 OVR). This strong season might also allow you to look at Elite 11 prospects and close out other recruiting battles you might not have before. ASU is in great shape, so congrats in that regard!

As for GT..... considering how unbelievably well we have played over the past month, I have to figure we're the favorite. Nevertheless, I think the game will go one of two ways: We can't stop the option again and get blown out, or we stop the option and blow them out. We're fully healthy on offense for the first time almost all year and that plays to our advantage; having Swift finally back healthy and Devin Brown back in the fold as our agile slot man will only help our offense, give us more options to work with and keep Tech on their toes.

You best believe we're going to be testing Tech's secondary all game long. Their corners are solid, but their safeties are perhaps the weakest position group on their team. This means I can send Speier, Byrom, Devin Brown or Marcus Rodgers on deep routes and try to beat them with either speed or athleticism. Lots of options and I can't wait to get the game posted here.

The playoff can be a pain, but it is not that hard once you have done it a few times. Running that mod has done so much to add to the enjoyment of the dynasty.. some of the tutorial videos out there helped me immensely when I was first starting with it about five years ago. I highly recommended if you have the know-how and time to do so.

Thanks as always to both of you!

Time has been a factor. I have so little time to game that when I pop in NCAA I don't tend to feel like doing all that extraction stuff, but after the next rosters come out I might make a regional conferences dynasty and try it out.

                            Around the NCAA: Playoff Watch

As a reminder, here's the Champ Week Slate:

                            ACC: #4 UConn (11-1, 8-1) vs. #1 Georgia Tech (12-0, 9-0)
                            BIG TEN: Penn State (7-5, 5-4) vs. #3 Iowa (11-1, 9-0)
                            BIG 12: #6 Texas (11-1, 7-1) vs. #15 Arkansas State (10-2, 7-1)
                            PAC-12: #7 USC (11-1, 9-0) vs. #2 Oregon (12-0, 9-0)
                            SEC: Kentucky (7-5, 5-3) vs. #5 Ole Miss (11-1, 7-1)
                            C-USA: UTSA (7-5, 7-2) vs. Louisiana Tech (9-3, 8-1)
                            AAC: SMU (8-4, 7-2) vs. East Carolina (8-4, 7-2)
                            MWC: Boise State (6-6, 5-3) vs. #22 Fresno State (10-2, 6-2)
                            MAC: Miami-OH (9-3, 6-3) vs. #24 Toledo (8-4, 8-1)

And here's where we stand in the playoff race:
This year, the Rose and Sugar Bowls will host the Playoff Semifinals. The Playoff’s top seed will be assigned to the game closest to them geographically. As the only three teams with a legitimate chance at the Playoff’s top seed, Georgia Tech and UConn would be seeded to the Sugar Bowl should they be #1, while Oregon would be seeded to the Rose Bowl.

                            LOCK
                            NONE

                            WIN AND IN
                            #1 Georgia Tech (12-0) or #4 UConn (11-1)
                            #2 Oregon (12-0)

WIN, THEN WAIT FOR THE COMMITTEE
                            #3 Iowa (11-1)
                            #5 Ole Miss (11-1)
                            #6 Texas (11-1)
                            #7 USC (11-1)

SLIM ODDS, BUT STILL ALIVE WITH A LOSS
                            #1 Georgia Tech (12-0)
                            #2 Oregon (12-0)

                            IF ALL ELSE FAILS
                            #8 Minnesota (10-2)
                            #9 Wisconsin (10-2)
                            #10 Syracuse (10-2)
                            #15 Arkansas State (10-2)

BEST CASE: ACC Champ and Oregon win and get in. One of Iowa, Texas or Ole Miss loses while the other two win; the other two would claim #3 and #4.

WORST CASE: Georgia Tech AND Oregon lose. Iowa, Texas, Ole Miss win to go with USC and UConn. We have seven teams for four spots.

OTHER NOTES: No complicated theories this time, but we could have a HARD decision to make. Pac-12 and ACC are all but guaranteed to get one team in apiece.

The tricky part lies within the fact that we have three one-loss teams below them who seem quite equal - each have very legitimate cases, as far as I’m concerned. Texas might have the best resume of the three; their only loss being to the team they are playing this week, an Arkansas State squad that is still alive in the CFP mix themselves. Iowa posted a perfect record against the hardest division (Big Ten West) in all of college football, while Ole Miss, top to bottom, might have the best roster in the nation - plus, they’re the defending national champions. One upset would help the playoff picture a lot, but regardless of how the bracket looks come selection Sunday, this is bar none the best playoff field we will have had in the ten seasons of this dynasty.

When I get the game preview up I'll include a blurb about the last time we played, the epic 2021 ACCCG that we won in a stellar game. I look forward to (hopefully) another down to the wire finish this time!

I think if I'm on the committee, I'm looking for Iowa to win big to be a lock. Like you said, ACC winner is in, and an Oregon win puts them in. Shouldn't be difficult for the committee if things go chalk but I can imagine UConn is hoping that at least in their case it doesn't.

I don’t think what happens to the other teams will affect us much. The problem as committee chairman, however, is that if things fall chalk, we basically have three teams on the bubble for two spots in Iowa, Texas and Ole Miss.

As it stands right now, ACC Champ/Oregon and then Iowa and Texas probably have the edge, like you have alluded to (this makes a lot more sense to me having thought about this after your post). Iowa ran the table in league play, while their division will send two and maybe three teams to the New Year’s Six. Texas' only blemish is to the team they play this week; if Arky State hadn’t slipped up against Oklahoma State late in the season, we could be looking at a possible play-in game from that conference as well. Ole Miss had an unfortunate draw of a weak SEC this year and a crummy opponent this week (they have the worst loss of this group as well, so that doesn't help them either). BUT, they're the defending national champs and have the most talent of any team in the nation, no doubt about it. That will absolutely keep them in the race - but ultimately, how far can that get you?

                                "Bubble Teams" losses:
                                Texas - #15 Arkansas State
                                UConn - #10 Syracuse
Iowa - Oklahoma (8-4, OU was top 10 at the time but slumped late)
                                Ole Miss - Texas A&M (5-7)
                                USC - Tennessee (5-7)

(and of course, if something extreme happens and Oregon and GT lose to fall into the bubble territory, their losses are to top ten teams).

While we at UConn are probably in with a win, having one less team on the bubble to worry about can’t hurt, like you implied. We move into a 12-1 tie with three other teams and the blind resume test will likely need to come into play. I’m not worried about that, but it would be nice to have our place confirmed without any additional guesswork.

The best thing that could happen for all parties is an Oregon win coupled with one major upset in any of the B1G/SEC/Big 12 - which would give us a Final Four of the ACC Champ, Oregon, and whichever duo of Iowa/Ole Miss/Texas win. No one gets shafted, four conference champs in, no issues. Sadly, though, it never works out like that.

Regardless of what happens, I absolutely cannot wait to see how things shake out and I look forward to hearing the opinions of you and everyone else as the CFP draws near and the "Committee" needs to make some decisions. Hopefully soon we can get this season’s CFP rolling and finally learn this season’s climax!
