Loving these updates. Hopefully Diaco and company get off relatively easy with the infractions from the NCAA! UCONN isn't the next SMU are they?

Thanks Trevor. No SMU, for sure, but I am a little concerned for sanctions if this turns up positive. We'll see what happens.

                Win, with a loss

UConn wins Big 12 opener, lose Hamilton for 6 weeks

I have a feeling this is going to turn into one of those championship hangovers that everyone seems to have.

This was validated after UConn lost struggling starting QB David Hamilton in the first quarter of UConn's 35-21 win over Oklahoma St. in Stillwater with a torn shoulder, and requires him to sit out for 6 weeks recuperating. Hamilton suffered the injury late in the first after getting knocked down in the backfield on a read option play, and a diagnosis was made later in the game.

UConn found themselves down 7-3 at the time of D-Ham's injury, and in the meantime, at least we found a backup.

True freshman Tanner Dean-Lowry, held out of UConn's opener against Boise to prevent sending him out in a high pressure situation, finally got his big opportunity to shine. And shine he did.

Following a pair of sacks from T.J. Newell, UConn settled for a field goal to make it 7-6.

Fortunately, Joey Stetson pushed a long field goal attempt wide left for the Pokes, and it was all TDL after that.

TDL's first throw was a wobbly one to Rashad Harris, but Harris was open and made the catch, and proceeded to spin around a Pokes defenderon his way to the Okie State 12. Ron Johnson finished off the quick drive with a 12 yard stretch run that went for a TD, and pulled UConn ahead 13-7.

Okie State responded though. After a short catch from Chris Davidson, Chris Lacy's 11 yard grab kept the chains moving. QB Omar Myrick and tailback Lonnie Wright kept the drive moving on the ground, but on 3rd and 10 Myrick hit Dorian Baker down the left sideline after absolutely torching Anthony Watkins. 2 plays later, Brian Deebler was in the end zone with an Okie State lead, 14-13.

With 1:40 left, TDL and the Huskies got aggressive and looked to score. They were aided by Jeff McNeal's long return to the Pokes' 40, and that was all TDL needed. After a 15 yard scramble, he hit Harris again for 18, and a few plays later tight end Alec Bloom for a 4 yard TD, and the 20-14 lead at the half.

TDL punctuated the second half early on with a one yard sneak TD (leaping over the line and going head first, mind you) to cap off a beautiful 12 play, 73 yard TD drive. After a pass to Jeff Matthews for the two-point try, UConn had command of the game with a two score lead.

A series of three and outs ensued as Okie State's offense floundered, while their defense stood out. Ends Jordan Brailford and Cole Walterscheid pressured TDL and knocked Johnson and Arkeel Newsome around for minimal or no gains.

UConn sucked the air out of Myrick and the Pokes with a beautiful goal line stand at the outset of the 4th. Closing in on pulling the game within a TD again, Myrick looked to Lacy in the end zone, where he was covered by Derek Robinson. The junior knocked the ball away, it tipped out of Lacy's hands and sophomore Ross Sinclair ducked down, grabbed the ball and stood right back up for a big INT that took all the momentum out of OSU.

Two drives later, UConn locked up the game with an 11 yard TDL pass to Harris, and that pushed UConn's lead to 21 and locked up the Huskies' 20th consecutive win.

As for the stats, TDL performed splendidly, going 10-17 for 157 yards and a pair of scores, with another on the ground. Johnson added 98 yards on the ground, though no one seems to be pleased by the poor play of the O-Line preventing him from picking up more yards. The defense settled down, but Myrick fired 314 yards and 2 TD's.

So the question now is....we have the streak at 20. But we're down a starting QB. Luckily for us, he wasn't setting the Earth on fire with his performance in the last 2 games.

Can we keep it rolling? Baylor next at the Property. Rise Up!

Don't worry, I think Thomas was back for next week, though coming off the bench. He did get his share of throws though.

We got the win, but by no means was it helpful losing our starting QB. At least TDL looked OK, but we need to get Johnson and 'Keel back posting 100 yards/game.

Indeed. Not only that, he garners more attention than Okie State's head coach Hudspeth.

Starting to wonder if D-Ham is going to be one of those guys who never lives up to their potential and ends up getting benched for the true freshman

First the suspension, then the two lackluster performances, and now he gets hurt for a big chunk of the rest of the season. So far he's more of a headache than he's worth

I have to agree with the above. I am not sure how big of a loss D-Ham actually is. Lowry could turn out to be the better player. I am excited to see how he does in the coming weeks. Baylor should be a decent game for him to continue to get his feet wet and build that confidence. Should be interesting to see play out.

I am excited to see how he does in the coming weeks. Baylor should be a decent game for him to continue to get his feet wet and build that confidence. Should be interesting to see play out.

It'd be a shame, especially after I had essentially named him the guy of the future when he committed in the fall of '16. He still does have a chance to come back if TDL doesn't play well enough in the 6 weeks upcoming (or Isaac Jackson, I think he'll be bumped to #2 over Rivero), but I can't help but thinking D-Ham's days in Hartford are numbered.

You are correct cheese, Baylor is a largely average team that has had some questionable games early (lost to UTSA, most recently beat hapless Kansas), but they aren't overly talented on defense. Plus TDL gets some home field advantage before traveling to Morgantown and West Virginia in two weeks.

Bumping the CAC Sign-Up thread below. Thanks!

                        CAC Sign-Ups 2019

Friends, it is that time of 'chise season again. CAC time!!!!!

Still a little early I know, but some real life stuff is on the way and I am anticipating finishing up the current season next week before school starts back up, and I'll progressively catch up here as time permits.

If you wish to be a little more interactive with me in this 'chise, fill out a coach submission form and I'll insert you into the game as a coordinator at a mid-major school (in place of one of the fake coaches) in hopes that you can carve out your road to coaching glory with Coach Diaco. Who knows, maybe you can get to UConn someday.

The start of the 2019 season in 'chise will mark the fourth year of our create-a-coach side story featuring, you, the followers of this 'chise, me and our coaching alter egos.

You can PM this to me or post it right in here, either way works. I need submissions by Monday, August 24 unless I change my mind or if there are extenuating circumstances (contact me if this is the case; i.e., you are out of town next week and can't get to the site to fill this out, I'm more than willing to wait a couple days if need be). I'm back in school on the 26th, so I'm anticipating being at the start of 2019 at that point.

REMEMBER: Folks already with a coach in the 'chise are NOT allowed to submit another at this time.

Completely optional, as always, and it doesn't require you to be very active in this dynasty, the only thing you need to do is fill this out and watch 2019 unfold. But it's a lot of fun, I do updates in with the Around the NCAA post and it's just a neat thing to follow along on the side. I'm hopeful we can get some of these coordinators head coaching gigs soon so I can give UConn more compelling choices for out of conference scheduling in coming seasons. I have a feeling someone like Tyrell Coley, Brennan Smith or Trent Davis can snag a head coaching spot if their teams keep playing well.

Last time Baylor came here, in 2008, I was at the game. It was a Friday night, just before I turned 10, and it was really when I fell in love with the atmosphere of The Rent.

                              Let the good times roll

UConn tops Baylor behind TDL's stellar day

This might not be so bad.

Despite losing David Hamilton to a torn shoulder for 6 weeks last time out, Tanner Dean-Lowry gave us reason to believe that we'll be just fine.

Firing a magnificent 15 of 16 for 198 yards and scores on the ground and through the air, TDL willed UConn to their 21st consecutive victory overall, and 18th straight at the Property with a 35-17 triumph over the Bears of Baylor.

Like so many times in the win streak, UConn took control early in this one and never let go.

The first mark on TDL's belt came on UConn's second drive. On a 3rd and 6, he shook off a sack and scrambled for 7 yards to keep the chains moving on an eventual touchdown drive. TDL hit Steve Hashemi for 11, Ryne Thomas for 17, then Ron Johnson finished with a 3 yard plunge to give UConn first blood, 7-0.

After a third straight Baylor drive that turned up empty, UConn pushed the lead to 14-0 at the end of the first after a big 48 yard TD pass to Jon Haden, breaking a tackle then turning on the PF Flyers and jetting to the end zone.

UConn nearly put away the game at half. Baylor got good field position to start midway through the second, and Derrick Ryan hit Courtney Calhoun twice to pull into the red zone, but Baylor had to ultimately settle for a Mike Therman field goal.

Immediately afterward, Jeff McNeal showed his value and explosiveness by picking up two blocks on the ensuing return to the left sideline, and beat everyone else to the house, 101 yards for the 21-3 lead.

After a Calhoun drop forced another Baylor 3 and out, two big TDL scrambles of 17 and 13 led UConn into the end zone right before the half, and UConn was in cruise control up 28-3.

Baylor could only muster one offensive touchdown after the half, as Ryan hit Calhoun twice more and scrambled himself for 25 to set up a Terence Williams TD.

Josh Malin helped his team a bit by scooping up a UConn fumble at the Baylor 20 a little later on in the third and running it back all the way for an 80 yard fumble six to cut the lead to 28-17.

TDL strung together a long drive for the Huskies that got all the way to the goalline, but on a sneak attempt for TD was drilled by Aaron Leonard and Jace Alton scooped it up for Baylor possession.

Baylor had a shot to pull within 4 points midway through the 4th with Ryan taking read options for 11 and 11, then a Williams 10 yard run pushed Baylor past midfield. However, 3 plays later Baylor was faced with a 4th and half yard from the 40, or in other words no man's land.

Ryan picked the wrong play. He went with a midline option play when a dive or sneak would've done just fine. Instead, freshman Altarri Gardner came up with the biggest tackle of his career to this point and gave UConn a chance to put the game on the shelf.

Runs from Arkeel Newsome, Johnson and TDL all contributed to the 8 play drive that ended in a 1 yard Al Hart TD dive at the goalline. A few minutes later UConn walked off 35-17 winners for the 21st straight game.

Again, we're in good hands. I gave you TDL's stats at the outset of the recap, but with the defense playing well again I have confidence that we can keep rolling without our "starter" at QB. Into hostile West Virginia next week. Through the Big 12 and Jerruh World for the Big 12 Title Game. Into the playoffs. And into San Antonio for that damned Natty and a second shot at greatness.

We visit Morgantown up next. See ya there.
