    GAMEDAY!

Amazingly we are up to Week 7 in the 2014 College Football Season. Today, UConn remains at home for their 4th home game of the season to face the 2-4 Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Tulsa has prided themselves on being a high-powered offense over the years, and though they don't have any stars, they are still productive.

At QB, normal starter Dane Evans is hurt, so Joseph Calcagni is in today. Calcagni has speed to burn, so I'd expect a bunch of short passes and some QB runs.

At running back, JUCO transfer Tavarreon Dickerson starts, with James Flanders spelling him. Dickerson is the more burly back, with Flanders being more of a speed back. Regardless, both are effective, especially with Calcagni at the helm as compared to the slower Evans.

UConn's front 7 has struggled vs. the run this year, but because this is a weaker rush offense than Army or BYU, I'd expect a better performance out of the Husky D today.

Tim Boyle gets the starting nod at QB today for the Huskies, and in order to win the game, Boyle will have to do everything he did last week, complete his short passes, establish the run and confuse the defense. The last part might be easier said than done as it's a D-I opponent this week, but still important nonetheless.

With no stars on Tulsa's defense, UConn might be in for their best totals so far this year.

    Prediction: UConn 31, Tulsa 24

UConn needs this win, and I think they get it.

As I said, I feel this is a must-win. As long as the defense can hold up, I think we're OK.

Thanks for the kind words, MJD!!!

Also, hate to leave you guys hanging for a little bit, but my schedule is wicked tight for the next 2 weeks or so. Exams next week (in turn lots of homework and studying on the horizon), and 3 basketball games this week. Sorry about that. I'll be back soon, promise.

              Calculating the formula for victory

Calcagni runs hog-wild in Tulsa victory

Another week, another big QB rushing day for an opposing team. Meet Joseph Calcagni.

Storrs/E. Hartford, we are in trouble.

After a big win over Stony Brook two weeks ago, one would have figured the UConn Huskies would be returning home with lots of confidence against an average team, and pull out a win.

Instead, UConn falls to 1-4 and has to face the hottest team in the conference next week in Cincinnati.

Strap in, this could get ugly. But as UConn fans, eh, you might be used to this by now.

Anyway, it was OK for a quarter. After that though, it got bad. Offensive inconsistency was the main demise of Tim Boyle and co., and the defense really struggled against the surprisingly mobile Joseph Calcagni, who would eventually rack up 155 yards and 3 TD's. On the ground. Did we mention a flawless day through the air, 298 yards and a pair of TD's through the air? With no INTs? Or how he is a backup?

              I can see why I didn't...

Calcagni and the Golden Hurricane raced out to a 31-14 halftime lead, but the Huskies didn't quit, that's for sure. They pulled it to 34-28 after the third quarter, as Thomas Lucas had another big receiving score and Josh Marriner chipped in a score.

But Calcagni dominated from there, as the UConn defense caved again. Calcagni ran in a 51 yard score, and answered a second Marriner TD with a Tavarreon Dickerson TD scamper, and ended it with another with 1:27 to go.

Ultimately, Boyle ended with 4 INT's, yet 3 can be credited to the poor play of the offensive line, who seems to be getting worse by the week.

With time getting shorter to try to stay alive and get bowl eligible, UConn needs to come up huge next week on both ends vs. the Bearcats.

Does this mean change is expected anywhere in the lineup?

Yeah, it's been bad, I've been doing nothing but schoolwork and basketball for seemingly 2 straight weeks. But, last of my exams is tomorrow, and I have a 4 day weekend, so I'll be back into this full time for the foreseeable future.

I think I need to scale back sliders on defense. I love the challenge I'm getting, but I think it may be too much of a challenge. But, season's not over yet. Nadasfan (Sports Gaming Universe on youtube) made it to a bowl one time in his NCAA 13 UMass dynasty after starting 0-6... as much as a pessimist I am...never say never.

UConn lands WR Reid, lose out on LB Thomas

More news coming out of the UConn recruiting trail this week, as a pair of prospects have committed, one to UConn, one to Maryland.

Rodney Reid committed after the Tulsa game. The 3* WR is a freak athlete at 6-foot-6, and being a possession receiver he has definitely caught Coach Diaco's eye. UConn easily won this recruiting battle over Rutgers, USC and Notre Dame. With a bit of speed to burn as well as good hands, Reid could be a future star, especially with the graduation of Deshon Foxx and Geremy Davis after this year. The only knock on Reid right now is that he may need a year of polishing, but luckily UConn appears to be able to afford a redshirt on Reid right now.

The obvious disappointing news is losing out on 3* LB Brandon Thomas to Maryland. Thomas, an athletic run stopper, is a Maryland native and he stated that it was going to be hard for anyone to dissuade him from going to his hometown school. And after Maryland's stunning upset of Ohio State last week, it's hard not to see why.

                        GAMEDAY!

UConn has a big test ahead of them today, as the 4-1 (1-0) Cincinnati Bearcats come to East Hartford as American Athletic Conference play continues.

The Bearcats, much like Tulsa last week, enter down their starting QB, as one-time Indiana commit and Notre Dame QB Gunner Kiel has a pinched nerve and is out for just this week. In steps Shannon "Munchie" Legaux, a guy who has had the job before, and has speed but not a terribly great arm like Kiel. However, UConn has struggled mightily against scrambling QB's this season.

Hosey Williams gets the nod at running back, and he is off to a good start this season. A balanced back, I'd figure Williams gets a good chunk of work against a suddenly patchwork UConn D-Line. I'm hoping Jefferson Ashiru and Graham Stewart rebound and have good games.

Ralph David Abernathy IV and Mekale McKay headline the Cincy receiving group, and both are solid, but not spectacular. With Legaux in at QB today, I don't think either will stand out.

On defense, Cincy has pieces, but is held back in other places. This is a good chance for Tim Boyle to regain some confidence, and get Max DeLorenzo some carries, and back in the offense. He has looked really sluggish the past 2-3 weeks, and needs a bounce-back game.

                        Prediction: Cincinnati 21, UConn 17

I think UConn can keep it close, but Cincinnati will get a little more done on offense.

                            Comeback Kids
Boyle, UConn drop 22 in fourth quarter to rally past Cincy

Tim Boyle carried UConn to victory over Cincinnati.

Do we know these people? After today, I'm not so sure I know either.

UConn was able to log their second win of the season in a real barn burner, needing to score 22 points in the fourth quarter compared to Cincy's 3. Tim Boyle really stepped up and led the offense, and the defense made timely plays and stops.

But, like with every game this season, it was by no means easy. It could have been, but, you know...

UConn trailed almost the entire game. They got down 10-0 early, as Munchie Legaux's 67 yard TD scamper gave the Bearcats the early momentum.

UConn answered back, as little-used tight end Tommy Myers got a 5 yard TD catch, however, the PAT was blocked.

From there, Cincy got up 17-13 with a minute left in the first half when Brian Lemelle, in for an injured Deshon Foxx (did not return, banged up on a kickoff return in the first quarter), fumbles returning a Cincinnati punt. Luckily, UConn recovered, but not before the ball bounced backward all the way to their own 6.

After missing a wide open Geremy Davis (ended with 160 yards, second such game in a row) on 2nd down, Boyle tried to throw again on 3rd down from the 8. Common knowledge says you sit on it and try not to give the other guy an advantage, but Bob Diaco and Boyle thought otherwise. Perhaps not seeing him, Boyle threw right at Howard Wilder, who had a clear path and returned the INT to the house. Cincinnati suddenly had a 24-13 lead at the half.

Howard Wilder's pick six put Cincinnati up double digits at halftime.

Both teams traded TD's in the 3rd, making it 31-20 with 7 minutes left in the game.

Boyle, getting big help from Davis' ridiculous 4th down grab with a pair of defenders draped over him at the Cincy 35, raced into the end zone from 24 yards out on a scramble, and got the 2 point convo to put UConn back 3.

Giving a bit of room, the UConn defense only allowed a field goal to Tony Miliano, Cincy up 34-28.

With Davis hauling in another deep pass, it only took Boyle 33 seconds to find emerging wideout Thomas Lucas for a 6 yard score. UConn had their first lead after the PAT, 35-34.

With only 3 minutes remaining, Legaux had to work a little urgently. Sticking to the gameplan, he handed off to Hosey Williams (24 rushes for 143 yards and a TD) for a 2 short gains.

On 3rd down, Legaux threw toward tight end D.J. Dowdy, who couldn't quite hang on and tipped it around. Coming out of nowhere was Jefferson Ashiru, who had been quiet since his 16 tackle outing against Boise State in Week 2. Ashiru, almost falling over trying to catch it, somehow kept his balance and snatched the tipped pass to force the INT.

Still keeping his balance, Ashiru outran a lineman and Dowdy, and found the end zone. The legend's 59 yard INT return gave UConn an 8 point lead.

Jefferson Ashiru's pick six was the game-clincher.

Cincinnati had a final chance, driving inside the 10 with 14 seconds and no timeouts, but were stuffed short on 4th down, sealing the UConn victory.

It was a great game, no question. But these UConn kids scare me. Their wins this year have both come in comebacks of more than 2 scores. Their composure is great, but I'm not sure how they will hold up if this trend keeps up.

But, I am a pessimist, so what do I know? It was a huge win, and we got some key performances. Hopefully, today's game cemented the starting lineup, barring injury, for the second half of the season.

At 2-4, we just need 4 more wins...

                            See you next week.

RDIV wasn't actually much of a factor. I was pretty sure when I saw Legaux at QB instead of Kiel that he, Max Morrison and Mekale McKay wouldn't do much in this one. Was Hosey Williams who did more damage.
