Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

I was pretty intrigued by the chance that Coach Patterson might come to UConn. It would've been an interesting change going from the 3-4 to a 4-2-5, and moving away from the pro-style offense for a faster paced spread offense. Belichick is a great hire (I hope), if he's anything like his dad our beloved Huskies are in good hands.

Some very good points here. Patterson was the best hire for now, but given that he's (I think) in his 60s by this point.. it might not have been the best for the future. Patterson definitely would have signaled a changing of the guard though, and his offensive philosophy would have been very good for I-Jax in particular. Given how well he played in the second half last season and his dual threat abilities, he could've really thrived with a pass-first approach.

Regardless, the passing game should figure more into the offense this season. The primary concern is that our returning wideouts have combined for I believe 0 career catches in total (30-something for our tight ends I think it was now that Archie has gone pro). Steep learning curve, no doubt!

The 4-2-5 could have also been a good thing given the sudden depth we have at safety -- Vic Castalanetta was a freshman All-American, Tony Rush is moving into Ross Sinclair's spot and he could be good. We also have some other younger DBs in Aaron Brook, Tory Greening and big Kion East who could be impact players. Our defensive sets may definitely vary more than in past years, but I'm content sticking with the primary 3-4 front for the time being.

I too think Belichick is going to be good.. there certainly won't be as many antics as Diaco (The Civil Conflict, anybody?), but he gets along well with the management, he relates to the kids and has a good bloodline with his father being who he is. I also think he'll be a better recruiter than Diaco in a couple years' time; he's young and can pitch the northeast better because he's lived there, unlike Diaco. We'll have to wait until we're on the field to see if he can manage a game as well as Diaco could, but needless to say, this should be a good hire and I bet we'll be just fine moving forward!

UConn Recruiting Update - Pre-Signing Day

Seeing as how I’ve only had one recruiting update this season, I figured pre-signing day would be a good chance to get ourselves reset on where we’re at.

UConn has now landed 14 commits entering signing day.

We already discussed some of the recruits in our previous recruiting update, so I will not discuss most of them. If you want to read about them, you can do so here.

UConn Huskies Commits (through January 31, 2021) Recruiting
        NAMEPOSCLASSHOMETOWNHTWTCALIBER
        Korey Davis-LoveGHSSanford, ME6'3296
        Kyle JanuaryPHSDarien, CT5'11214
        Daulton HiattDEHSCloverleaf, TX6'7242
        DeAaron KensingDEHSRutherford, NJ6'3239
        Roshawn RoweGHSSan Bernardino, CA6'1279
        Ethan BuckinghamDTHSSummit, NJ6'0275
        Scottie PhillipsRBHSBethel, CT5'10221
        Hunter CarsonWRHSGeorgetown, SC6'4216
        Kelly CarlsonQBHSGlen Ellyn, IL6'5231
        Kelvin CookeCBHSHoboken, NJ6'2182
        Dallas FreemanFBHSFarmington, NH5'10234
        Jayson MossFBHSMaple Shade, NJ6'1230
        Anthony RicciardiKHSFarmington, NH6'1195
        Scott SarriaLBHSBrownwood, TX5'11225

While the immediate contributors such as Korey Davis-Love and specialists Anthony Ricciardi and Kyle January came in the last wave of commits, the newest wave will likely sit for a little while.

Local tailback prospect Scottie Phillips is sliding into a very deep running back class and will almost certainly redshirt as a true freshman. However, he could be a very good third down back moving forward. He’s a thumper with a big body and can be a great 2 or 3 yard back.

Wideout Hunter Carson is a big kid who could serve a role in a long-missing part of the UConn offense: A red zone jump ball threat.

Illinois native Kelly Carlson is the latest in UConn’s search to find the face of the program. While Carlson knows he won’t be projected as the savior, he does possess good dual threat capabilities and could be a really good backup option in a couple of years. With Tanner Dean-Lowry leaving the program, Carlson will immediately compete with sophomores Alex Paige and T.J. Appleby for the backup job, and perhaps Jordan Brown if he commits.

Kelvin Cooke is a cornerback from New Jersey who may need some time, but as a three star prospect his upside is pretty good. He has the size at 6-foot-2 to contend with bigger and smaller receivers. The one knock on him is that he may not have the top end speed to hang with top corners.

Finally, linebacker Scott Sarria, while only a two-star commit, needs to look no further than former two-star linebacker Sammie Leonard to have hope that he too can be a star. With several linebackers graduating, Sarria could be a contributor sooner rather than later.

        --------------------------------

        The Ongoing Recruiting Races

The commits are nice and all… but this signing day will be massively important to new Coach Belichick because of the recruits he’s awaiting decisions on. While Bob Diaco started recruiting all of these guys, Belichick will need to tell them that he’s still planning on running a similar style of offense and they’ll have a lot of fun working with a young coach. If Belichick can even land three or four of these guys, that will be a huge win -- all of them could be impact players ... and right now, at that.

Let’s look first at Jordan Brown and let's get one thing straight. We absolutely need this kid. We do have four QB's on the roster as it stands right now with the addition of Kelly Carlson.. but Brown is going to be the backup right from day 1 and the starter in 2022. No ifs, ands or buts.

Diaco liked Brown a lot.. And so does Belichick. In fact, offensive coordinator Bill Cubit said he overheard Belichick talk about Brown “as if he were a young Tom Brady.” Belichick agrees with Diaco and thinks Brown has the intangibles, arm and heart to be the face of the program for years to come. Diaco graded Brown as having a better arm than now-departed QB Tanner Dean-Lowry .. despite the fact that Brown is three years younger. While not at all a running threat, Brown has slung his HS team to victory time and again and has a great feel for the position.

Despite his three star rating, Brown is a bona fide gem and target #1 on UConn’s board -- he could easily be the best quarterback we’ve seen in this dynasty’s run so far when all is said and done. They will have to fend off Notre Dame and Oklahoma State to get him.

        Guru's Recruiting Plan: All-in. 5,075 points.

Athlete Easton Pointer is capable of playing other positions, but if he commits to UConn, he will probably only end up at quarterback. Pointer is a better version of Alex Paige; a short, skinny, dual threat with a bit of a noodle arm, but a backup at best, especially if Jordan Brown enters the fray. He is not a must-have prospect, but if Brown decides against UConn, Pointer becomes one. Pointer has pretty much narrowed his decision to UConn and ECU -- so he’ll have to decide if he wants to sit for a winner, or play for a doormat.

Guru's Recruiting Plan: Throw a couple points and hope it sticks. If it does, awesome.

Jonathan Shaffer is another important target. Even though UConn is set for 2021 in the backfield with Luke Williamson returning while J.P. Byers and Mike Molden will back him up, Shaffer could be an important piece of the future as well. Shaffer is a very good balanced back, with some speed and a lot of agility to go with a bit of power. He’s a pure threat in every aspect of the running game, and should fit nicely into the UConn backfield.

Guru's Recruiting Plan: ~2,000 points and he should be ours.

Brandon Garner of Panthersville, GA is a talented wideout prospect, but UConn is falling behind in this race to the team that beat them in the national title. Much like Hunter Carson, Garner is a tall, lanky receiver with very good hands. Should he commit, he’ll figure into the starting race with UConn’s top four receivers graduating.

Guru's Recruiting Plan: I really like him but we need to spread the wealth.. 1,035 points.

Same for Garner goes for athletes Lonte’ Speier and Chamarkelle Byrom, UConn’s only five star prospect on the board. If we were any worse at running back, I'd be looking at both as running back prospects. However, we're worse at receiver, so if they come, that's where they'll go. Both have big size and athleticism, making them possible major weapons in the UConn offense for years to come -- and both could also contribute on defense if needed. Speier is the more technical receiver while Byrom is the better all-around athlete. Both look like electric, playmaking offensive weapons. We have big leads for both, but I don't want to play it safe -- these are two more potential program changing players and perhaps our top two receivers for the next four years.

Guru's Recruiting Plan: For players of this caliber and of this importance, 1,500 apiece and hopefully we can land at least one.

Defensive tackle Matt Tellers is another must-have, purely for the fact that he is a defensive tackle and we are teetering in dangerous territory with depth at that position. Nevertheless, he's 6'3 and 330 pounds -- the absolute perfect size for a nose tackle. He and Ethan Buckingham will be a nice combo for years to come if he should commit.

Guru's Recruiting Plan: We need a DT -- 1,790 points.

Athlete Tyreese Best is more of a mystery. His ratings are good.. he's fast and a great athlete. However, he may not be as good as Byrom and Speier -- and his race is much closer. In fact, Best may even be better suited to materialize in the secondary; problem is we're very deep there right now.

Guru's Recruiting Plan: A couple hundred points as I want Byrom and Speier more. If we get him, we'll gladly take him. If we don't, it's not a huge loss.

I apologize, I accidentally left Cutting off the board when I hit post. I think this kid is Shav Wade 2.0. Seriously. He has size, speed, skill. I want him bad.

Guru's Recruiting Plan: 1,200 points and hopefully that's enough.

Treon Harris completes miraculous playoff run, leads Dolphins to Super Bowl win over Packers

2017 Heisman winner Treon Harris is adding another trophy to his case: The Lombardi Trophy. After sneaking into the playoffs with a 9-7 record, the Miami Dolphins won three straight road games and then their first Super Bowl since 1974 as the 'Fins defeated two-time NFL MVP Michael O'Connor and the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl LV.

The former Florida Gator and #1 pick in the 2018 Draft, Harris led the Dolphins with 276 passing yards and four touchdowns en route to MVP honors.

Harris is very familiar and one of the more popular non-Huskies in the circles of this dynasty; he topped UConn legend Josh Marriner to win the aforementioned 2017 Heisman, and his Gators fell victim to UConn in the 2017 National Title Game. On a lesser note, he also quarterbacked Florida when they lost the 2015 National Title Game against UCLA.

He is also, indirectly perhaps, the reason why Bob Diaco left UConn. His Dolphins beat London's Black Knights in the playoffs, forcing Marvin Lewis out of his coaching job, which would soon be filled by Diaco.

The other CAC coordinators at Power 5 schools (Coley at Rutgers, Smith at Purdue, James at Maryland, Woodard at Louisville) have all had success either last year or in years prior. Trends alone bode well for you.

However... you landed a kid in recruiting who might push you to stardom. Given how weak the Big 12 East is (especially now that we're gone), with him you can succeed and succeed for a long time. We'll meet him later.

you’ve really got me hyped about jordan brown. but then again, let’s not get too excited... couple of your qb’s never quite panned out. obviously love the recruiting updates.. and probably my favorite point in a dynasty is when a new coach comes in, so i’m definitely looking forward to seeing what belichick can do. that’s a really intriguing hire.

I truly think we've finally found our guy in Brown.. he can and might be the guy who ends our bad luck with QBs. For posterity I suppose,
here's the post where we met TDL -- and he wasn't nearly as good coming out of high school. On the same token, D-Ham and I-Jax were also three star prospects. Corey Blount is the other guy in that post and we lost him to Houston -- he's a career backup who I'll probably grad transfer now that he's a fifth year senior (I'm having some problems with that now, so we'll see what happens). For my sake, I really hope Brown works out so we can put the ghosts of Blount, TDL and Hamilton to rest once and for all.

I typically don't like to reveal overalls to you guys until signing day because that's how it goes in real life -- but he jumped up +8 or 9 in scouting to 78 overall. His arm is very very good (I think it was his arm strength that graded out 95 with accuracy in the high 80s) and his awareness is good for an incoming freshman. It's really telling when a 3-star QB is our #1 target when we have multiple four star guys (and five star Byrom) on the board at the same time.

Of course, we need to actually get him to commit first -- but I just won't let him go to our former conference rival in Okie State or our new conference rival in Notre Dame. The thought of him torching us for four years in the Irish Gold might make me literally sick -- it cannot happen.

As I said in response to whughes, Gary Patterson would have been awesome and the best hire, but only for a few years (and I can't make the game hire him ). Belichick could ultimately be a better fit for the college coach role than Diaco. Diaco was a motivator and a great game manager who wasn't always the best recruiter -- despite all our successes on the field, to my recollection we've only had two top 25 classes in seven tries, and we've had our fair share of busts, as we'll start to see when we begin to recap the 2017 and '18 classes. Belichick is like his father - intelligent, no-nonsense and can probably get the most out of his teams and players each week. I'd bet we're probably in good hands.

I remember you said you went to WMU or had ties to WMU in some way (and your CAC in Cheese's dynasty went there as well), so when that job came available that seemed like the only logical choice. WMU has former North Dakota State coach Chris Klieman there as the headman and they've struggled a bit in recent years.. hopefully you can help bring them back to the top of the MAC!

I appreciate the kind words Mike.. it makes me happy to know you're enjoying this still! I forgot how much fun this project was when I was fully invested a couple years ago and I'm thrilled that this is still enjoyable for myself and you all to read along. This is like a book that we're writing, page by page, day by day, and I absolutely love that. We're starting chapter eight, after all.

In retrospect the year away from this project was good for me to do life.. but now that I'm at a place where I want to do this again I may be enjoying it more now than I did over the summer of 2015 when this was at its peak. It's also crazy thinking back and realizing how this thread is approaching its third birthday coming up in December.. I was in the middle of my sophomore year of high school when this started and to think that I'm now writing to you from my college dorm.. My oh my how time flies.

Anyways, enough of my life and sentimental musings. I've got a class to study for ..

Thanks to both of you as always.

NSD ‘21: UConn lands “program-changing” prospects Byrom, Speier, Brown en route to 24th best class in coach Belichick’s first year

Not bad for a rookie, eh?

With no college recruiting experience whatsoever, Stephen Belichick held together a recruiting class for UConn while finishing what Bob Diaco started, landing three targets that will change the face of his program before he even gets to coach a game.

Adding onto a solid class already, Coach Belichick hauled in UConn’s three top targets on signing day: Five-star Minnesota athlete Chamarkelle Byrom (ranked 28th in the SPARQ 100), four-star athlete Lonte’ Speier, and three-star quarterbacking gem Jordan Brown from Texas. On the strength of those three, UConn finished with the 24th best class in the nation. Additionally, running back Jonathan Shaffer (four-star) and defensive tackle Matt Tellers (three-star) will join them as UConn’s five new commits on signing day. The Huskies finish with 19 incoming freshmen -- breaking down to one five-star (Byrom), three four-stars, eleven three-stars and a quartet of two-star prospects.

They will play as soon as they step on campus."

Both Byrom and Speier will be moved to wide receiver and both have strong chances to start immediately at wide receiver spots, supplanting fifth year senior and former walk-on Johnny Williams and sophomores Devin Brown, Drew Talley, Marcus Rodgers and Collin Miranda. Both are prototypical wideouts as well - Byrom is a great athlete with good hands in a 6-foot-5 frame, while Speier is a technical wideout with good hands as well; he stands at 6-foot-3.

Despite the successes, Belichick did lose a couple key targets on signing day as well. Four-star athlete Tyreese Best decided to play small-school ball and picked Akron over offers from UConn and Florida, while fellow athlete Easton Pointer picked playing time over winning by selecting East Carolina and their new head coach Jon Tenuta. Four-star wideout Brandon Garner, as expected, picked Oregon over UConn. Three-star corner Maleek Cutting, a guy UConn was very high on, elected to stay out west and signed with Cal-Berkeley.

Nevertheless, Belichick seems pleased with what he’s got.

                        Around the Nation

Oh boy! In years past, this has been a very entertaining part of our thread.

This year, Florida landed the top class, led by a quartet of blue-chip players including #1 prospect LeDonald Chandler and #6 prospect Bryghton Mock, both athletes. Notre Dame and Michigan had the second and third best classes. The Irish landed top wideout Eboniray Potter and running back Marlin West, the #3 and #4 prospects in the ESPN 100, respectively. Michigan landed QB of the future Collin Decker, top wideouts Andre Shumpert and Torre Johnson, as well as athlete Armani Oriega.

Our Darrell Reid anomaly award this year once again goes to the state of Ohio. Out of eight top 50 prospects from the state.. One committed to Michigan, two committed to Penn State, two to Florida, and one to Miami of Ohio. Ohio State just can’t keep these kids local..

In the CAC world, new Vanderbilt head coach Dale Miller held together the 31st ranked recruiting class to land the top CAC class for the 2021 cycle. Coach Quinn Shea of USC and offensive coordinator Connor Turley, entering his third year at UCF, landed the second and third best CAC classes, respectively.

                        Ed. Note:
I need to thank Mattrd39 for the recruiting classes. I used his 2015 class here, but for names only. I renamed the real top 500 guys myself to create a truly fake recruiting class, and then exported and re-imported the name data into my UConn file. If that makes any sense at all.. ahahah..

Next season I'll be using his 2016 class, which I also renamed all the top 500 players in. It may not be noticeable immediately, but if you catch some names you recognize in the next four-five seasons, you'll know where they came from.

Big thank you to him once again.. I know he used to lurk this thread but no clue if he still does. It's much appreciated!

Pretty solid looking class. Although Buckingham seems a bit small to be playing nose tackle. Might have to shift him to defensive end, or put him on a diet and move him to linebacker

I'm more surprised that a top 10 prospect in the entire nation committed to Miami (OH)! That's big news for the RedHawks. Oh yeah, and then there's your class.
