The Journey of Sean Powell (NCAA 14)

Western Kentucky Hires New Head Coach

BOWLING GREEN, KY - Western Kentucky announced today that Sean Powell will be taking over as the Western Kentucky football head coach. This comes on the wake of the new design of the NCAA football landscape.
Sean Powell has showed plenty of promise as a coach. He started his career as a running back coach at Georgia Southern and quickly moved to offensive coordinator. He then was hired by Robert Morris as the head coach. He remained there for a decade. During that time he won 3 NEC Championships and had 6 winning seasons. Now he has been hired at Western Kentucky. Stay tuned for more to find out about the new NCAA football landscape.

Player of the Game: Damarcus Smith - 25/31, 294 Yds, 4 TD, 18 Att, 97 Yds, 1 TD

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest started off the new C-USA in electrifying style. The opening play went to the endzone. That was just the spark to what would be an explosive offensive day. Western Kentucky's sophomore QB did more than exceed expectations today. He had 4 TDs and threw for 80%. He looked like a seasoned veteran in the pocket. The O-line did give up a total of 4 sacks today. Some of the sacks were Smith's fault. If he saw an opening he would scramble and occasionally got caught in the backfield. The defense did much better than expected as well. They intercepted 2 passes and did very well against the passing of Wake Forest. The biggest weakness was when the option was run. They gave up several big plays on the ground due to the option. However, they did give up a few big pass plays but did not cost them the game. This Western Kentucky team looks good for their first game with a new coach. They changed both offensive and defensive playbooks. The offense switched to a spread, and the defense changed to a 3-4. There are still some kinks to work out, but today was a very good showing for the Hilltoppers.

                Demarcus Smith - 21/34, 177 Yds, 1 TD, 23 Att, 39 Yds, 3 TD

HUNTINGTON, WV - Today was a hard fought win for the Hilltoppers. They struggled to get the offense and defense working in the first quarter. Marshall was running up and down the field on the defense, and Smith was struggling to complete passes on offense. The first half was filled with scoring, but the second half was filled with defense. After Western Kentucky's late game TD Marshall charged down the field and nearly scored. Both defenses did a good job of containing the QBs. Marshall had 8 sacks while Western Kentucky had 5. Smith made history today for Western Kentucky. He set the school record for rushing touchdowns in a game (3). The Hilltoppers are starting the season off strong and look to continue their early success both on the road and in conference.
