What if: Nebraska had beaten Texas in 2009?

12/5/2009: Nebraska vs Texas, Big XII Title Game

Nebraska pulled the upset of the century, defeating #3 Texas (#3/#3)
Earlier in the day #2 Alabama destroyed #1 Florida in the SEC Championship, which set the stage for either #4 TCU or #5 Cincinnati to slide into the BCS Championship.

    BCS Bowls 2009
BCS Championship: #2 TCU defeats #1 Alabama 37-34
The underrated TCU Horned Frogs pulled off the upset of the century, following in the footsteps of the 2008 Utah Utes. For the second season in a row, the MWC Champions faced the Alabama Crimson Tide in a major bowl game, and brought it. TCU took an early 21-0 lead, only to have to survive a late Alabama comeback. Alabama took a 34-30 lead with 2:00 left, only to see TCU pull off the 2-minute drill of the century, going 92 yards in 1:54 to win the MWC's first BCS Title.

    Orange Bowl: #6 Texas 45, #11 Georgia Tech 21
Texas finished their disappointing season with a strong victory in the Orange Bowl. Literally one second from the national title game, they finished their second 1 loss season in a row.

    Rose Bowl #8 Ohio State 26, #9 Oregon 17

    Sugar Bowl #5 Florida 51, #3 Cincinatti 24

    Fiesta Bowl: #7 Boise State 41, #13 Nebraska 10
The often overlooked Broncos of Boise State finally got another BCS Bid after their 4th undefeated regular season in 6 years, and showed up everyone with a massive victory. Destroying the Big XII Champions in dominate form, 41-10.

    2010
Because of their 2009 BCS National Championship, the TCU Horned Frogs entered 2010 ranked #2, with Boise State ranked #4. Alabama was ranked #1, and Ohio State took #2. Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Oregon, and Nebraska rounded out the top 10.

TCU and Boise State fought for the #3 spot all season, coming down to the last weeks. Boise State overcame a tough challenge for #15 Nevada and finished undefeated in the regular season for the 3rd year in a row, and 5th season in 7 years.

    BCS Bowls
    BCS National Championship: #1 Auburn 22, #2 Oregon 19
    Rose Bowl #6 Wisconsin 44, #3 Boise State 43 (3OT)
    Orange Bowl #4 TCU 45, #13 Virginia Tech 12
    Fiesta Bowl: #7 Oklahoma 48, Connecticut 10
    Sugar Bowl #5 Stanford 40, #9 Arkansas 28

    2011
The 2011 season started with TCU on a 28 game win streak, and Boise State who had a 26 game winning streak just broke, both in the MWC.
TCU started ranked #10, and Boise State ranked #6.

In an interesting turn of events, TCU lost their opening cost to Baylor 50-48 and then went undefeated to their November 12th meeting with Boise State. TCU (7-1), #10, faced #5 Boise State (8-0). Boise State won 34-31, marking the 2nd win in a row, and making the series 3-1 in BSU's favor. Remarkably all meetings were when the teams had 1 loss or fewer.
Unfortunately the series ended, as TCU is going to the Big XII.

The MWC was awarded an auto big for 2012 and 2013, despite losing Utah to the Pac-12. BYU and TCU stayed, due to the fact the auto-bid was pretty much a lock.

    2011 BCS Bowls
    National Championship #2 Boise State 35, #1 LSU 32
    Sugar Bowl: #3 Alabama 45, #11 Virginia Tech 12
    Orange Bowl: #24 WVU 70, #16 Clemson 33
    Fiesta Bowl: #4 Oklahoma State 41, #5 Stanford 38
    Rose Bowl: #7 Oregon 45, #9 Wisconsin 38

    2012 and beyond
2012 marked the year TCU bailed to the Big XII, but with the auto-bid in effect BYU did not leave.
The MWC consisted of Boise State, BYU, SDSU, Air Force, Wyoming, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, and Hawaii.

MWC's auto bid was to the Fiesta Bowl.

      2012 BCS
BCS National Championship: #2 Alabama 42, #1 Notre Dame 14
      Rose Bowl #6 Stanford 20, Wisconsin 14
      Orange Bowl #13 Florida State 31, #16 NIU 10
      Sugar Bowl #21 Louisville 33, #3 Florida 23
Fiesta Bowl #8 Boise State 34, #5 Kansas State 31

The 2013 season was a set-back for Boise State, but BYU filled the bill quite nicely with a 11-1 record and a #9 ranking.
      BCS Nation Championship
      #1 Florid State 34, #2 Auburn 31
      Rose Bowl #4 Michigan State 24, #5 Stanford 20
      Fiesta Bowl #6 Baylor 42, #9 BYU 35
Sugar Bowl #3 Alabama Crimson Tide 40, #16 UCF 10
      Orange Bowl #13 Clemson 40, #7 Ohio State 35

The 2014 Season was one of question marks. The new CFB somewhat left out the MWC, but they are still widely considered one of the best conferences in the land.
Boise State with a 11-1 record landed themselves another Fiesta bid, and another Fiesta Bowl victory!

      MWC Realignment
After resisting become a 12 team conference for a long time, the MWC finally made the leap. Starting in 2015, Houston, SMU, Utah State, Fresno State, and Nevada will join the MWC, making it a 14-team league.
The two divisions will feature rotating divisions, and a championship game between #1 and #2 in the MWC.

With Houston and SMU leaving the American, the MWC is the defacto #1 Group of 5 conference.

The big question is, how will the next 12 years go?
TCU, Utah, and Boise State got the MWC access, but what happens next?
The MWC/WAC combination went 10-3 in BCS/CFB bowls from 2004-2014, easily the best record of all conferences.
      But what happens next?

      Keep tuned!
