        In Sickness or In Health

The injury bug hit Western Kentucky very hard in this game, but they didn’t seem to care. The Panthers saw their 1st-3rd stringers at QB and RB. Embarrassingly enough, they couldn’t stop the 3rd stringers.

For the Hilltoppers, the consistently gashed the Panther D. Anthony Wales, in for Leon Allen who was hurt on the 1st play, ran all over the defense. He averaged nearly 10 yards per run with no runs of negative yardage. Whether it was star QB Doughty or backup Nelson Fishback, the passing attack was strong and prominent. They combined for 250+ yards and 2 TDs. Thier defense also was clicking as they seemed to know Coach Malloy’s playbook very well and players swarmed the ball constantly.

For the Panthers, the focal point of the offense was supposed to be a rushing attack. It didn’t seem that way come game time as Kyler Neal ran for 43 yards. Granted, they were behind most of the game and most teams throw more when they’re behind. Kyler Neal also broke his shoulder in the second to last play of the game and he is done for the year.

                Upset in Morgantown
                What a game.

West Virginia came out on absolute fire, scoring 10 points in the first 4 minutes of the game. QB Skyler Howard accounted for their first TD of the day on a 12 yard slant and their kicker booted home a chip shot for the opening points of the game. West Virginia scored to end the first on a broken play at the goal line. Skyler Howard, the shifty QB he is, evaded 2 Panther linemen in route to scoring.

The second quarter was headlined by Georgia State QB Nick Arbuckle leaving the game after a 3rd down attempt with an undetermined head injury, he would not return for the rest of the game. Georgia State would get the ball back quickly thanks to a Robert Dowling interception. In steps backup Emiere Scaife.

Bio of Scaife: Redshirt Freshman, Southpaw, 6’2”, 215 lbs., Very Good Runner

He made himself known quickly, first delivering a 40 yard strike to #1 wide out Donovan Harden, who leaped what seemed to be a mile in the air to make the grab. Soon thereafter, the two would hook up again, this time in the endzone.

West Virginia would respond on a slow, methodical drive and score punched in by Skyler Howard again.

Georgia State would get the ball back and a 40 yard grab by Joel Ruiz set up Will Lutz for a 45 yard field goal to bring us within two scores going into half.

Boy does this get interesting fast. On the first drive of the second half, Georgia State, led by Emiere Scaife drove down the field with great ease. Scaife’s momentum got put to a halt really quickly as he, like Arbuckle, went down with an injury which put him on the sidelines. This also was a day-to-day injury and he would not return either. In steps Aaron Winchester.

Bio on Winchester: True Freshman Who was Going to be Redshirted this Year, 6’2”, 175 lbs.

Winchester immediately impressed just like Scaife as his first pass was a touchdown screen to Kendrick Dorn. Surprisingly the score 24-17. West Virginia would respond with a quick drive halted by a sack by Mackendy Cheridor. They would kick a field goal, thus ending the third quarter.

Georgia State would retaliate easily with a quick drive and a long strike from Winchester to who else, Donovan Harden. All these QB’s are playing insane this game, 27-24 Mountaineers.

West Virginia did what they did almost all game when they got the ball back, drive. But in this instance, a few huge stops forced them to kick a field goal from left hash. They pushed the kick. Georgia State had a chance with 4 minutes left.

Just my luck, they made nothing out of that chance and punted.

The momentum teeter-totter shifted once again as Skyler Howard made one of his few mistakes of the game, fumbling with 2 minutes left. Georgia State lost one yard on the first 3 plays of the set of downs. On 4th down, Robert Davis made a tremendous catch while blanketed by 2 defenders, a 34 yard gain. A few plays later, DeMarcus Kirk powered in for a 9 yard score. Georgia State up 31-27.

Skyler Howard tried to lead a solid drive which got down to around midfield but it stalled and Cloves Campbell made the game-winning sack. PANTHERS WIN!

With 3 QB’s who played for the Panthers and a ton of drama, they pulled out the biggest win in their program’s short history.

                See you next week.

Skyler Howard waltzes into the endzone for 6.

Robert Davis' big catch to bring us within scoring range.

Woah, what a way to win with 3 QB's. After beating WVU, Tulane should be a walk in the park, but we'll see.

                              Arbuckle Out vs Tulane
Pretty big news coming out of Panther camp just a mere 48 hours before game time against Tulane. Starting QB Nick Arbuckle will have to sit for this weeks game. Arbuckle was taken out of the game against West Virginia early on and hasn't felt right since.
Coach Malloy spoke on his behalf:
Nick has told me that he will be ready to go against Alabama next week. He believes that it is the biggest chance he'll ever get to prove himself as a talented commodity in the NCAA, which quite frankly, I believe he is that and then some. Thank you for your time.
In his place will be redshirt freshman Emiere Scaife who proved that he is a pretty solid QB himself while playing West Virginia. If he preforms well this week, there could be controversy heading into the game in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

I sure hope so, may not get the game up tonight but definitely tomorrow if so.

Two very common emotions of the Panther faithful during this game.

In the longest opening drive I personally have witnessed, Georgia State alternated a pattern of handoffs to Marcus Caffey and screens to multiple backs. That continued for 4 minutes, but stalled at the 15 yard line after around 15 plays. Georgia State booted home a chip shot to make that effort not go to waste. Tanner Lee and Tulane showed pretty solid abilities when they got the ball, but as they crossed into Panther territory, Robert Dowling picked off a simple lob over the middle to Devon Breaux.

The Panthers capitalized on that mistake, first going backwards 4 yards and then forward 21 on a strike to Nyiakki Height. Again Caffey was stopped for a loss of 4 and again there was a huge play to follow, this time 49 yards to Donovan Harden. Caffey made amends from his previous small runs by gashing the defense for a 13 yard score following the big pass play.

Tulane then decided to start clicking, Sherman Badie ran a pitch for 31 yards after a kick return to midfield by the Green Wave. That’s about as far as they would go, the Panther D stuffed them from any further yardage and they drilled a field goal. After forcing a 3-and-out, Tulane got the ball once more, drove for 3 minutes and Sherman Badie ran in the score to cap the drive. Momentum begun to drastically shift.

After ANOTHER Georgia State 3-and-out, Tulane got the ball and drove pretty handily down the field. For the second time though, the defense dug in and forced another chip shot field goal, which they made. That cannot be said for the Panthers. They drove down the field in one minute exactly and kicked a field goal with 6 seconds left. Problem was, Will Lutz pushed the kick left and there were still 2 seconds left on the clock.

That was two seconds too many as Tanner Lee loaded up for the end zone and connected with Terren Encalade for a 66 yard score. Tulane leads at half 20-10. Even better, they get the ball back after halftime.

Ugh, I guess this “cakewalk caliber game” turned into a cakewalk for Tulane. They received the ball to open the half and took full advantage, scoring for the 5th drive straight. This time the score was made by Sherman Badie from 3 yards out.

After what seemed to be a mid-game feeling out process(as some call it) for three possessions, Tulane started to click again as shown by a 30 yard burst by Sherman Badie. However, just like many other instances in this game, Georgia State’s defense stayed strong and forced another easy field goal for the Green Wave.

Finally though, something went right. Of course, it was at the hands of our best player Donovan Harden. He decided to channel his inner strength and make a miraculous leaping catch to get the Panthers down field. But just as that happened, Kendrick Dorn ruined our hopes by not converting on 3rd or 4th down. That seemed to be an ever so common trend in this game.

As if the game wasn’t over, Tanner Lee wanted to pad his stats, he threw a few more completions before loading up to Devon Breaux to put them up 27. The timer hit zero and thank god this game was over. I’m speechless.

                                See you in next week...
