The 4 Quick Takes From This Week's NFL

          Amanda Reditch

We take a look in at the NFL with an emotional goodbye, a look to the future, and a few rumours about a current hot topic of mine, coach firings.

1st Down - New Orleans Set To Play Final Game At The Superdome

After opening in 1975, the Superdome will finally shut it's doors on Sunday after the Saints play their final home fixture there. A permanent and iconic part of the community for over 40 years, the stadium has seen the area through some tough times, such as Hurricane Katrina. The Saints have called the Done their home since it opened and the stadium has hosted 7 Superbowls. Fortunately New Orleans can say they brought it a Lombardi Trophy home back in 2009. With long time franchise face Drew Brees retiring recently and new heir to the throne Riley Swanson impressing with each passing week, now is a good time for the Saints to move on. How the superclub concept develops remains to be seen, but a new stadium is always exciting for the fans.

2nd Down - To the Colts, Luck Is Just A Distant Memory

Back in October 2016, the NFL was losing it's mind about a trade that rocked the landscape of the league. One of the biggest of its kind, the Seahawks sent 3 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder to Indianapolis for Andrew Luck. Now we're at the other end of those draft picks, how do things look? Seattle went to the playoffs in Luck's first season but got bounced early by the Panthers. Since then, the team have gone 8-8, 9-7, 7-9 (that season saw the team ditch Head Coach Mike Tomlin) and sit at 4-10 under Mike Holmgren, missing the playoffs in all 4 years, they're already out of the picture this season. The Seahawks still haven't surrounded Luck with much talent which has made his early tenure with the team unproductive. The Colts on the otherhand have used the picks they received well, re-tooling on both sides of the ball. They went to the playoffs last season and Chuck Pagano has them playing as one of the top teams in a tight looking AFC. Most importantly, Rob Pickett looks like the next great QB to hit this league. He has everything a successful passer could need and he's taking his team to the next level. The former Florida State man went #2 overall a couple of years back and already that selection could be paying off for the Colts. It's hard to see a future where he doesn't keep that team competitive for a long while to come.

3rd Down - To Fire Or Not To Fire, That Is The Question!

You may have seen my recent piece of the striking number of teams that have decided to part ways with their Head Coach in recent seasons. As is normal, there are some contenders for the chop as this season draws to a close as well. From what I'm heard across the league, teams may try to take a more patient approach going forward. Combining that with underperforming teams like the 49ers and Texans having picked up a new coach just 1 season ago and we may see a significantly lower number of coaches looking for work this off-season. Based on the record of 1st year coaches in the last handful of seasons, that might not be a bad thing for the quality of the league.

4th Down - Light At The End Of The Tunnel?

The formulation of a new CBA can be a grueling and time consuming affair where relationships between the NFL and the NFLPA can be significantly damaged. Ultimately it usually takes the time crunch of an impending season to get both sides to budge, but from what I'm hearing a new CBA could be signed as soon as the middle of the playoffs. That may be a little optimistic, but there is definately progress being made. Considering the NFLPA wanted an increase in the guarenteed money in contracts, it will be of interest to see what is announced. Either way, it is some really great news for fans, players and teams alike.

I'm loving the arms race in the AFC right now between Max Shaw's Raiders, Herschel Robinson's Bills and the Rob Pickett's Colts. It really is a coin toss to see how they stack up in the seedings come the playoffs, and when they meet it is going to be fantastic viewing.

          Amanda

Re: The N"If"L - A Look into the Future of an Alternate NFL

After a long flight cross country, Cory stepped off the plane and proceeded through security. The usual formalities, checks, questions. It was all relatively painless and provided ample opportunity to stretch the limbs after being sat for so long. As he progressed through the airport’s foyer and out onto the sidewalk to grab a cab, he attracted a few sideways glances. The sort that comes from a level of notoriety where people look then second glance, but can’t recall where they know you from. He had only made a handful of NFL appearances after all, hardly a household name. Jumping into the car, he instructed the driver to head for downtown before elaborating “The corner of 12th and O, please.”

As he paid his fare and stepped out onto the sidewalk, Cory slipped on a pair of aviators to shield his eyes from the January glare. It was cold, crisp, but a low sun provided some warmth to those outside. The streets were lined with trees and a tram car rumbled past behind him as the cab pulled away. He slipped a piece of paper from his pocket and studied the writing on it one more time. Max DG Sports, 1476 12th Street, Sacramento, CA.. No time like the present, he thought, moving towards a large building to his left. As he approaches, the door swung open and a petite lady stepped through, chatting hurriedly on a cell phone. Cory burst into a jog, but needed no more than a few steps as he grabbed the door before it could shut. Moving inside, the aviators went back into his pocket as he studied his surroundings. Max’s office had to be in here somewhere, but presented by nothing but a few nondescript doors and an equally plain set of stairs he had little to work with. Nothing doing here, suppose I’d better check around before I start randomly knocking.

As he ascended the stairs, it was already beginning to dawn on Cory that something here was amiss. These weren’t the plush surroundings of an organisation that wowed sports stars from across the country. Glass doors, spotlights and plush carpets were replaced by uneven floors, uninspiring walls and cheap, fluorescent lights. As he reached the 1st floor, Cory saw a small sign on the wall next to yet another nondescript door. An unspectacular plaque to anyone that might see it, but of significance to some, “MAX DG SPORTS” read the inscription. Cory struck the door with a bent knuckle a couple of times, then waited.

After a few moments, the door creaked and opened, revealing a shortish woman in sweat pants and a tired looking sweater. Her hair was tied back and she wasn’t exactly portraying the image of an executive secretary. Her arm was holding the door and after seeing Cory, she flinched it just enough to make him put a foot forward in case the door slammed shut fully. The exchange took moments but felt like minutes, like two gunslingers in the wild west, sizing each other up. Eventually, the woman decided it was probably best to say something. “Yes?” she said curtly, in a conversational tone that at best could be described as frosty. Cory knew the voice. He’d be dismissed by it on the phone plenty of times in the last few months, he was in the right place. “I’m here to see Max,” Cory said. Direct, and to the point. He could hear a muffled tone in the room behind the woman, but what struck him was the sparse décor, simple, a table and a phone. Another entrance could be seen at the back of the room but the door was shut. On one wall there was a picture of Michael Jordan, but that was about as much as could be seen. “He isn’t here. Do you have an appointment?” I didn’t come all the way across the country to get the cold shoulder, time to change tact I think. Cory cast his gaze past the woman, focusing on the poster for a moment. Long enough to create a sense of unease, coupled with his lack of response. She turned to glance over her shoulder to see what Cory was looking at. “Not exactly,” Cory said, taking that opportunity to slide past the woman. He wasn’t a player renowned for his quick first step, but he was still a professional after all. He entered the room to see it was as sparse under further inspection as it was at first glance. The conversation in the other room had stopped but the lady punctuated the silence in a voice that had gone from frosty to flustered very quickly. “You can’t come in! He isn’t here!” Her voice suggested otherwise. Now he was in the room, he had the upper hand. Cory walked over to the window and used a casual finger to lower one of the slats of the blind, looking down at the street below. “It’s ok, I’ll wait.”

The woman slumped abjectly down into her chair, sensing she had been outfoxed. She huffed, and shifted herself around. Eventually she pressed a button on the phone situated on her desk. “Mr DeGrassio, someone is here to see you.” That got Cory’s attention and he swung around to face the woman, before opening his hips to turn and face the currently closed door. That soon changed as the handle turned, and Max appeared. “Cory! Great to see you!” Full of bravado, Max wasn’t ready to give the game away without a fight. “Sorry about the office, we’re just in here for a little while, until they finish our suite further down town. We should go see it, you wanna go?” Not happening, Cory thought. He wasn’t going to buy anything else from this guy and by the looks of the room behind Max and the “reception” area he’d already encountered, this was a permanent deal. What to do? Do I go at this loser so he knows I mean business? Do I give him a chance to explain? Or do I call his bluff? The woman was shifting uneasily on the spot, suggesting the first course of action may have occurred in the past. Cory took a few steps forward, prompting Max to take a few steps back, retreating into the room from which he came. “No Max, I think me and you are going to sit down and have a little chat about a few things.” Cory turned to close the door, realising the woman had followed him, captured by intrigue about what was going to happen. Cory paused, then closed the door anyway.

Piled against one wall were at least 50 identical shoe boxes, all with an Under Armour logo on the side. The same kind Cory had been sent a few months before. He swallowed his anger as the penny dropped, trying to maintain a sense of composure. “Sure thing, let’s chat.” Cory’s attention snapped from the boxes back to Max as he spoke, but the agent’s demeanour had changed completely. The gig was up. The pair sat down next to the desk, one of the few items of interest in the relatively small box room. A bathroom adjoined the surroundings, this place was a dive. “So, what’s the deal Max? Do you scam people a lot? Make a lot of money from things like this? ‘DeGrassio Towers’ doesn’t look quite like you described it.” Smooth during the con, selling the fantasy world, Max was anything but now he was face to face with a much larger, stronger, 6’0” tall version of reality. “No scam! You can’t prove that. This is above board. Go and see the cops! You signed a contract!” Max stammered, almost as if he was tripping over the points as they formed in his head, desperate to get them out as a counter argument. “True. We can get to that pretty soon. But what do you think the NFL will make of this? And the NHL? It’s pretty easy to get you black listed I’m sure.” The conversation was still surprisingly mild mannered, giving the situation. “That doesn’t matter. I own you.” It was Max’s turn to go on the offensive. “We have a contract.”

Cory sat back in his chair. With a nonchalant ease, he straightened his arms before undoing one of the cuff link on his left wrist. He had absolutely no idea what he would do if this situation still needed a resolution once he rolled up both his sleeves, but he began nevertheless. He'd never hit anyone in his life but it seemed the best thing to do as he slipped the cuff link into his pocket and began with the sleeve. There was no rush to his actions as Max sat and watched. At best this looked ominous for what might happen once Cory was finished. As his sleeve was rolled up to the elbow, Cory began with his right arm. “Look! Erm, we can work something out here, right?” The previous certainty in Max’s approaches had been quickly derailed, he was firmly on defensive once more. “I don’t know Max, you tell me. Maybe you take that contract of ours and we put it in your shredder, and I don’t see you again?” Cory’s sleeve was at the middle of his forearm. Max hesitated, a look on his face that portrayed the cogs going round in his head, weighing things up. Cory finished his right sleeve, sighed and stood up abruptly. “Ok, ok!” Max spluttered. “You win. Please!” He opened a rusty looking filing cabinet next to the leg of the desk and rooted around for a moment before pulling out the contract that Cory had signed some weeks before. Max looked longingly at the paper, his ticket to an easy life, living on someone else’s dime. It wasn’t going to be Cory’s. The quarterback leant forward, pulling the contract from Max’s grasp. “Any copies of this?” Max shook his head. “Good.” The shredder whirred into life, then the noise died off as quickly as it started.

Cory walked across the dusty wooden floor and placed his palm on the handle. As he went to open the door, he turned to Max. “If I see you again, I don’t think it will end well. And if you try this kind of thing again, it will end equally badly.” Max shrunk into his chair, like the fight had well and truly gone out of him. He nodded, solemnly. Cory opened the door and stepped through. He was greeted by the woman, stood far too close to him once more. She had clearly been listening to proceedings through the wall. She let out a startled noise as she retreated hurriedly, not wanted to be the recipient of anything Cory might do after his parting words to Max. Cory wasn’t the sort and the battle was won, but it boosted his ego somewhat to feel like a vigilante. “Thanks for your time,” he said, as he strode towards the exit. He gave a polite wave, stepped back into the hall and closed the door. A smile crept across his face as he descended the stairs. By the time he was back out on the sidewalk, the smile had become a grin. Reaching for his sunglasses, his smile disappeared. Damn it, I’ve got to find another agent now….

                    Year 6 20/21 - Divisional

                    The Worldwide Leader in Sport

                    Ed Shakespear, NFL Analyst

NFL, NFLPA Sign On The Dotted Line For A New CBA

In a quite startling turn of events, the NFL and NFLPA came to the table last week and hammered out the remaining points of a new CBA that is expected to come into effect once this league season is complete. It had appeared that both sides had been a considerable way off until 6 weeks ago when pieces began to click into place and real progress was made.

The headline take-away from the new deal is that all contracts in the NFL must now contain at least 50% in guaranteed money, meaning a straight split between bonus and salary. This must be adhered to starting from the 1st day of the new agreement, meaning a significantly shifting landscape for soon to be free agents.

One such free agent is veteran tackle Tyron Smith, currently on the roster of the Dallas Cowboys. "It is a big deal, but ultimately it just gives a bit more security. If a team was going to give you $5m before, they're still going to do that, or maybe even less with it being structured differently. If a team was going to give you say, $100m with $35m guarenteed, I think you'll still get that $35m now, but it'll now be a $70m contract overall instead. So you're switching one for the other, but maybe you're not that much better off. It's harder to get cut, but you might not earn as much when you are playing."

Wise words. It remains to be seen how the 32 teams across the league adjust to the move, but we aren't likely to see those changes until at least 2 or 3 years have passed. The real litmus test will be when a top passer hits the market. Andrew Luck's benchmark of a 6 year $140m would require a team to cough up at least $70m in guaranteed money, where as Luck's deal only had $51m of guaranteed money. Does that mean that players will lower their demands? Unlikely. Will teams pay more than they want to? Equally unlikely.

Some concessions were made by the NFLPA in order to obtain the gains mentioned above. One is a significantly more stringent anti-doping policy that will also come into force this summer with a considerable increase in both in season and out of season drug testing. With the recent increase in violations across other sports in the last few years, it is in everyone's interest to make sure the game is as clean as it can be. "We all want to compete on a level playing field," NFLPA Player Representative Aaron Rodgers said as the deal was announced. "If that means greater education for players, more severe sanctions and punishments and an increase in the amount of testing, that is what we need to do. WADA and the USADA are close to a break through on a number of new testing processes and we welcome those to."

The full details of the CBA should be announced in the coming days, including the length of the deal. It is expected that the agreement will be for another 10 years, but it isn't yet known if there will be a break clause in place at any stage.

As One Generation Departs, These Young Guns Are Ready

Peyton Manning. Drew Brees. Tom Brady. Tony Romo. Ben Roethlisberger. Philip Rivers. Aaron Rodgers. An era of top level quarterbacks at a time when the NFL has moved to embrace the pass like no other. But nobody can play forever. Manning, Brady, Romo and Brees all called time on their careers in the last few years. Signs point to Roethlisberger and Rivers hanging things up this off-season. For Rodgers, it is only a matter of time. These guys took over from Favre, Elway, Steve Young, Aikman, who came in to replace men before them. And as is only natural, there is a fresh batch of passers right here and ready to step in.

And if you cast your gaze towards this weekend's Championship games, you'll see some of those guys are already achieving big things. 3 of the 4 teams competing have young passers who look set for the very top. In Buffalo, Herschel Robinson is one of the elders of the group but at just 25 he is anything but. He helped the Bills to the #1 seed in the AFC this season and looks twice the player he was in St Louis now he has a solid line in front of him. Tyson McBride has been nothing short of unstoppable since he grabbed control of the offence in Dallas and at 24 he's already been to a Super Bowl. He appears to have plenty more in him. Indianapolis have Rob Pickett who after being selected #2 overall 2 years ago, led the Colts to a 12 win season and 3rd seed in the AFC. He has all the tools you could want for the position and as a full time starter at just 21, who knows what records he could break if he stays healthy.

Other stars are rising to. Max Shaw has Oakland on an upward trend and has an ideal coach in Jon Gruden. The Raiders had 12 wins and the #2 seed in the AFC this season before defeat in the divisional round to Pickett and the Colts. Although this season was lost due to injury, Mike Stark is a great player and a corner stone for the London Monarchs. He will be integral to their future going forward. Nate Gray took the Browns to within a few minutes of a Super Bowl last season, and that Championship was eventually won by another top, young QB in Marcus Mariota.

Others have promise but are yet to show the returns. Nate Patterson in Chicago doesn't have much of a team around him. Jack Riley can't stay healthy for the Jets. Bryson Tracy and Claude McDonald have struggled for consistency in New York and Miami respectively. Zach Martin in Baltimore and Riley Swanson have promise but need more time. Any of these players look capable of stepping up to that next tier though, given the opportunity.

Players like Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck and Joe Flacco will soon be entering the twilight of their careers, or joining players of their generation like Matt Ryan and Jay Cutler in retirement. The changing of the guard is well underway in the NFL. But then again, it always is. In a few months there will be another draft and no doubt, more top passing prospects set to make their own step up to fill the void left by those before them.
