Re: Piloting the Jets: A Madden Franchise
First wave of roster cuts for Jets
Newsday Sports
Jack Reilly August 5, 2014
Following Saturday night’s Green & White scrimmage and in preparation for this Thursday’s first preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, the Jets today trimmed five players from their roster. Wide Receiver Saalim Hakim, Tight End Tanner Purdum, Offensive Tackle Markus Zusevics, Linebacker A.J. Edds, and Cornerback Johnny Patrick were all notified of their release.
There are no surprises here as each player appeared to be buried on the depth chart at their respective positions and were not expected to get much playing time in the Jets first preseason game. The Jets current roster number stands at 70 and will need to be reduced to 65 next week.Comment

Jets starters struggle in preseason debut
Newsday Sports
Jack Reilly August 8, 2014
East Rutherford, N.J. --- The optimism surrounding the Jets training camp this summer took a detour last night as the Jets lost to the Colts in their opening game of the preseason, 41-26. Andrew Luck looked to be in mid-season form while engineering two scoring drives in his one quarter of action. The scoring began early on the Colts first drive when Luck avoided what looked to be a sure sack by Damon Harrison and launched a 44 yard bomb to receiver T.Y. Hilton in the back of the end zone. Following a quick three and out by the Jets offense, Luck was at in again this time finding Reggie Wayne wide open on a slant for a 10 yard touchdown. The Jets starting offense failed to get a first down in their one quarter of action and the first team defense struggled mightily against the pass with the exception of a Dimitri Patterson interception of Luck on the Jets 2 yard line. Rex Ryan commented on the pass defense saying, “I’m glad Luck played only one quarter or we might’ve given up 81 instead of 41.”
The Jets second unit offense faired a bit better, but too often had to settle for field goals. Michael Vick saw his first action as a Jet and led three scoring drives, but they resulted in only 13 points. Tight end Jeff Cumberland staked his claim for a starting spot with a productive outing scoring on a 14 yard pass from Vick and hauling in another pass for 22 yards on the final drive of the first half. Rookie receiver Quincy Enunwa also flashed as he converted on a third down by making an incredible diving catch for 14 yards.
The defensive reserves shared the same fate as the starters giving up a number of long scoring plays. One was a 51 yard pass from Matt Hasselbeck to receiver Griff Whalen. Then two 73 yard touchdown runs by Trent Richardson, the last of which sealed the victory for the Colts after the Jets cut their lead to eight in the fourth quarter. “I’ve never seen something like that against my defense,” Ryan said on the long runs, “we have a lot of work ahead of us.”
From the outset of training camp Michael Vick has been vocal in his acceptance of the back-up role to Geno Smith, but after Vick’s productive outing and Smith’s struggles, it seems possible that a quarterback controversy is taking shape. Smith is expected to get more playing time next week when the Jets travel to Cincinnati.
Injury Update: WR Greg Salas left the game in the 4th quarter with an abdominal injury. His status for next week’s game is unknown.

Tough preseason opener. On a brighter note though. I really like your layout, very simple and clean. Your writing is also very good.A Rising Storm in the North | Cheese's Eastern Michigan Dynasty (NCAA '12)

Five more players cut from Jets roster

The Jets released the names of five players cut from their roster this morning. Quarterback Matt Simms, receiver Clyde Gates, middle linebacker Troy Davis, and outside linebackers Jermaine Cunningham and Tim Fugger.
Each player was considered to be on the roster bubble entering camp so there aren't any surprises here. The one exception may be Cunningham, but the Jets started camp with eight outside linebackers so he seems to be a victim of a numbers game.Comment

Controversy Squashed
Geno puts rumors to bed as Vick has poor outing
Newsday Sports
Jack Reilly August 16, 2014
Cincinnati, OH -- Speculation surrounding the Jets starting quarterback situation quickly dissipated after last nights preseason game in Cincinnati. The Jets eked out a 38-35 win despite Michael Vick's attempts to throw the game away.
The Jets starters showed great improvement from their first game as they left the action with a 17-7 lead in the second quarter. The Jets defense forced a Bengals three and out to start the game led by Sheldon Richardson's two sacks of Andy Dalton. The starting offense then finally showed signs of life as they engineered a 8 play drive that ended with a 1 yard touchdown run by Geno Smith. Following a Bengals touchdown the Jets again put together an eight play drive this time culminating in another one yard score, a pass from Smith to rookie tight end Jace Amaro.
The game then turned as Michael Vick took the controls. Following a 92 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Cincinnati's Brandon Tate, Vick went on to throw 3 consecutive interceptions, 2 of which were returned for touchdowns by cornerback Adam Jones. When asked about the errant passes Vick said, "Just bad reads and poor throws on my part, our guys gave us a lead and I can't throw it away like that." The Bengals erased a ten point deficit in the 2nd quarter and took a 28-17 lead into halftime.
That's when the Jets fortunes turned, and the Bengals collapsed. Third string QB Tajh Boyd showed off his talents as he cap off a Jets 7 play, 70 yard drive with a 9 yard TD to rookie receiver Quincy Enunwa. The rookie also had two 15 yard receptions on the drive, making his case for a roster spot.
That's when things got crazy as the Bengals literally handed the game to the Jets by fumbling the ball six times, four of them recovered by the Jets. Tajh Boyd led another scoring drive this time finding another rookie receiver, Shaq Evans, for a 5 yard TD cutting the Bengals lead to 35-30. A two point conversion attempt failed, but the Jets got the ball back quickly after another fumble and scored on a Alex Green touchdown run. This time the 2 point attempt was successful giving the Jets a 38-35 lead. The last Bengals fumble of the night forced by free safety Jaiquawn Jarrett and recovered by strong safety Josh Bush sealed the victory for the Jets. Commenting on his teams first preseason victory Rex Ryan said, "Our turnovers nearly killed us, but the second team guys played hard and won they game for us. I'm proud of them, but there's still a lot to improve on."
Next up for the Jets is their annual preseason matchup against the Giants in what has come to be known as the "Snoopy Bowl."
The Jets had no injuries to report.

Hill, Barnes, Landry headline Jets cuts to 59
JetsBlog
SNY.TV
Matt Cosci August 22, 2014
The Jets announced 6 cuts from their roster today. WR's Stephen Hill and Greg Salas, RB Daryl Richardson, OLB Antwan Barnes, CB Ellis Lankster, and SS Dwan Landry.
It was no secret that Stephen Hill was in danger if losing his roster spot. A second round draft pick out if Georgia Tech in 2012, Hill struggled with injuries and produced little with his limited chances. The emergence of rookies Shaq Evans and Quincy Enunwa this preseason have made Hill expendable.
The first surprise cut came from the release of linebacker Antwan Barnes, who was expected to push Calvin Pace for playing time. Barnes has been plagued by injuries the last two years and hasn't shown much in his preseason. It looks a though the Jets are hopeful that the younger players can take on his role as a pass rush specialist.
Last years starter at strong safety, Dawan Landry has struggled in pass defense and the drafting of Calvin Pryor in the first round this year spelled doom for Landry. The play of Josh Bush had dropped Landry to the bottom of the depth chart.Comment
