    Giant Setback

Jets Starters listless as Giants claim Snoopy Trophy

    Newsday Sports
    Jack Reilly August 23, 2014

East Rutherford, N.J. -- If Friday nights preseason matchup versus the Giants was supposed to be a dress rehearsal for the Jets, they may want to consider a new wardrobe. The Giants starters thoroughly outplayed their in-town rival taking a 24-10 lead into the 3rd quarter. The Jets reserves saved face scoring 32 second half points, but ultimately fell to the Giants by a score of 45-42.

The Jets secondary has struggled all preseason and this game was no different. It started on the Giants first drive of the night when Eli Manning completed a 57 yard pass to Mario Manningham. That set up a 5 yard score from Manning to the newly acquired tight end Jermichael Finley as the Giants took the early lead.

The Jets would give the ball back quickly when on a 2nd & 4 from the Giants 46 yard line, Geno Smith was intercepted on a pass intended for Eric Decker by another new member of the Giants, linebacker Nigel Bradham. The Giants would settle for a 43 yard field goal, but on the Jets next possession Smith threw his second interception, this time to cornerback Prince Amukamara. The Giants would capitalize two plays later on a David Wilson 2 yard touchdown run.

Following a three and out on the Jets next possession, Manning would connect with rookie Odell Beckham Jr. for a 55 yard touchdown. The Jets special teams responded with a 66 yard kickoff return by rookie Jalen Saunders, setting up a 1 yard touchdown pass from Smith to tight end Jeff Cumberland to close out the half. On his teams first half performance Rex Ryan commented, "The guys are trying to do too much out there, we as a staff have to make better calls, and the players need to trust those calls."

The second half was a battle of big plays by both teams reserve players making their case for roster spots. It started with another long kickoff return by Saunders for 77 yards that set up a Michael Vick 1 yard touchdown run. Odell Beckham Jr continued his domination of the Jets secondary, scoring again on a 30 yard TD pass from Ryan Nassib.

Jets rookie QB Tajh Boyd made his statement for a spot on the 53 man roster by throwing two 4th quarter TD's, one to receiver Jacoby Ford and another to tight end Zach Sudfeld. Backup running back Alex Green also scored on a 60 yard run to give the Jets a late 42-38 lead, but the Giants drove 10 plays on their final drive ending with the deciding score, a four yard TD pass from Nassib to TE Larry Donnell.

Regarding the comeback that fell short Rex Ryan said, "I'm proud of the way we fought in the second half, we need to start with the same intensity."

The Jets will finish off their preseason schedule with a trip to Philadelphia next Thursday to face the Eagles.

Injury report: Wide Receiver Jalen Saunders left the game with a broken collarbone. He's expected to miss 7 weeks.

        Dynamic

        Monday August 25, 2014 6:15am

Mark Murphy sat at his desk drinking his sugarless coffee watching the game tape of the Jets most recent preseason defeat at the hands of the Giants. With each long pass play completed against Rex Ryan's defense he would try to ease his concerns by telling himself it was just preseason, but the truth was too apparent. They sorely lacked a pass rush from the edge of their defense and the cornerback play was atrocious. He thought to himself -maybe this is why Geno has looked so good in practice, but has struggled in games. The defense sucks right now.

As he looked over the roster and the offseason moves made prior to his arrival he couldn't help but wonder why these issues weren't addressed, being that they had more than enough salary cap space available to them. In his conversations with General Manager John Idzik he was told that they wanted, "roster flexibility." Murphy understood the importance of having good cap management, but Idzik's approach seemed much too conservative. Nonetheless he was willing to give his inherited GM a chance to prove his model could work.

With his head in his hands, his cell phone began to vibrate loudly against his finely finished oak desk. It was Jordan Correll. It had been almost a month since he met with his friend and he was anxiously awaiting his call. He hit the pause button on his remote and answered, "Jordan, I was beginning to worry about you bud."

"Good morning to you too Murph, ya know I do work for a living," Correll said.

"What's all that I hear in the background?" Murphy asked.

"I'm waiting for the train so I only have a few minutes," said Correll. "I have a option you should consider regarding the issue we discussed."

Murphy stood up and began to pace around his office, "Great! What did you come up with?"

"Well listen bro, there's little you can do about PSL's and their pricing right now. It's a legal agreement, but if your goal is to ease the financial burden of those customers there's a couple of things you can do to protect them," Correll said.

The feeling of disappointment came over Murphy, "Then what are our options."

"Take a deep breath Murph," Correll could sense his friends dismay. "The value of your PSL's are low, but the secondary markets for those tickets are where your customers are really losing their asses. You need to cut out the middle man and set the market yourself."

"How do I do that?" Murphy asks.

"It's called dynamic ticket pricing," Correll explained. "By incorporating this pricing structure to your single game ticket sales along with a reduction in season ticket prices you can pull the rug out from under those brokers and at the same time give your PSL holders a break."

Confused, Murphy asked, "By dynamic you mean moving? Where are they moving?"

"Moving up mostly, depending on demand, never under face value," Correll answered.

Now it was concern that overcame Murphy, "You want me to raise ticket prices?"

"Only on your single ticket sales." Correll continues, "despite the struggles on the field your team is still top five in the league in attendance, but you're in the bottom third in percentage of stadium capacity filled. You need to maximize the revenue from the single game tickets you have. This model will do that."

Intrigued by the idea Murphy asked, "So what's the data on this."

"The NHL, NBA, and MLB use this pricing and it's been very successful." What Correll would say next he knew would change Murphy's impression. "My projections estimate a 30% increase in revenue at the gate AFTER your 50/50 obligation to the players. The stadium filled percentage will rise into the top ten. If you start winning, you'll easily crack the top five."

Murphy knew that any bump at the gate meant increases in concessions, merchandise and advertising. Correll's idea was worth a look if a revenue increase of that scale was possible and an infusion of capital would put them on the short track to eliminating the need for PSL's. "This is going to need league approval."

Correll's train could now be seen in the distance, "I have a proposal ready, I can send it today. I also think you should try to get a few owners on board with you to help your chances, being the new guy in the block and all. I have a list."

"Great Jay, thank you," Murphy said.

As he prepared to board his train Correll said, "one last thing, you should get your PR people working on a way to present this, especially to your PSL holders, it could be confusing for them."

"I will do that, we'll talk soon," Correll hung up the phone enthused with what had just been discussed. He pressed play on his remote and his enthusiasm quickly faded as he watched Odell Beckham Jr running wild in the open field. He shook his head as he thought - something has to be done about these corners...

Trade for Packers CB falls through, Jets sign veteran Houston as plan B

The 2014 NFL regular season is just two weeks away and the New York Jets are still searching for answers in their struggling secondary. A source close to the Jets front office indicated that Friday night’s loss to the Giants, which saw the Jets surrender over 400 yards passing, prompted the Jets to look outside the organization for some much needed help.

We’re told that Monday morning the Jets were in negotiations with the Green Bay Packers for a deal involving cornerback Devon House, but the two sides were unable to come to an agreement. It is reported that the Jets had offered as much as a 2015 third round draft pick for House, but the Packers had asked for additional draft picks that the Jets were unwilling to part with. House’s impending free agency also factored into the decision.

                 photo image_2.jpg

After missing out on House the Jets invited three veteran free agents for to work-outs and physicals. Later this afternoon the Jets announced they had come to contract terms with Chris Houston on a 1 year contract worth $1.40 million. Houston (29) is entering his 8th season and last played for the Detroit Lions in 2013. At one point in his career Houston was considered one of the top cover corners in the league, but he was hampered by a toe injury last season and his play dropped off. A slow recovery from surgery on the toe triggered his release from the Lions earlier this spring. Jets GM John Idzik was available for comment saying, “Chris went through a rigorous workout and thorough physical. We are confident that he’s fully recovered and ready to contribute.”

The Jets released rookie CB Brandon Dixon to make room for Houston on the 53 man roster.

Eagles QB leads comback vs former team

Philadelphia, PA -- In his first game against his former team quarterback Mark Sanchez led a furious second half comeback, as the Jets lost their preseason finale to the Eagles, 28-20. Down 20-7 in the 3rd quarter, Sanchez directed an 8 play, 77 yard drive highlighted by a 39 yard pass to LeSean McCoy and capped off with a 6 yard TD pass to tight end Zach Ertz. Later in the 4th quarter Sanchez would connect on two long pass plays. The first to receiver Jordan Matthews for an 80 yard score, and later he would again find McCoy for a 55 yard pass, this time for a touchdown. Sanchez would finish the game completing 8 passes for 205 yards and three scores.

The Jets starters played the entire first quarter and fared well. The much maligned defense held the Eagles to just 7 plays, forcing 2 punts in their two series of action. The offense controlled the ball for much of the 1st quarter with a 13 play drive that stalled inside the Eagles 10 yard line resulting in a Nick Folk 21 yard field goal.

Michael Vick led the second teamers on two scoring drives which included a 25 yard TD pass to rookie Shaq Evans as the first half expired, but also threw an interception in the red zone that proved costly.

The Jets then opened the second half with a 16 play, 74 yard drive, but again the drive stalled and they settled for a Folk 23 yard field goal. That’s when Sanchez took the game over as the Eagles would score on three of their next four drives of the game. Down by eight with 2:30 left, the Jets drove 52 yards, but rookie QB Tajh Boyd would throw an INT intended for receiver David Nelson at the Eagles 2 yard line.

The Jets finished their preseason with a 1-3 record.

Jets add two rookies to roster; Release CB Patterson, DE Finau

The Jets are still in search of roster upgrades as the NFL’s kickoff weekend approaches. A late afternoon press release from Jets senior personnel executive Rod Graves announced the signings of rookie DE Khyri Thornton and rookie CB Kendall James.

                           photo image_10.jpg

Thornton was selected in the 3rd round by the Green Bay Packers in this year’s draft. The defensive lineman out of Southern Mississippi was released by the Packers last week in their final cuts after struggling to recover from a hamstring injury sustained early in camp. At 6’3” 305lbs, Thornton displayed a quickness and versatility during the draft process that drew comparisons to the Jets reigning defensive rookie of the year, Sheldon Richardson. When reached for comment Graves said, “He’s not as polished as Sheldon was coming out, but he’s a high motor guy who we can move along the line of scrimmage.” The Jets waived DE Tevita Finau to make room for Thornton who signed a 1 year deal worth $550,000.

                           photo image_9.jpg

Cornerback Dimitri Patterson, who signed a 1 year $3 million ($1 million guaranteed) deal this spring, struggled terribly this preseason giving up numerous big plays in the secondary. The signing of Chris Houston earlier this week relegated Patterson to fourth on the depth chart and an 80 yard touchdown given up to the Eagles Jordan Matthews was the final straw. Rather than having that spot filled by an underperforming veteran, the Jets seem content in giving a younger player an opportunity. Rookie CB Kendall James was drafted by the Vikings in the 6th round out if Maine. James turned heads at the combine by posting a 4.40 forty yard dash. Despite his small frame James is known for his scrappy play. Waived by the Vikings last week, James will have to add some strength, but he adds speed and athleticism to the Jets secondary.

The Jets also rounded out their practice squad by signing, RB Alex Green, G William Campbell, T Oday Aboushi, LB Tim Fugger, and CB Brandon Dixon.

Player note: no practice squad in madden15 (there should be) so that is just a list of players I had in preseason that I will sign in event of injury. If the CPU signs them I just consider that signed off my practice squad.

                            Regular season coming soon.

I like the idea of having a "practice squad." Very cool and something I have not seen done before. Looking forward to the regular season!
