East Rutherford, N.J. -- If Friday nights preseason matchup versus the Giants was supposed to be a dress rehearsal for the Jets, they may want to consider a new wardrobe. The Giants starters thoroughly outplayed their in-town rival taking a 24-10 lead into the 3rd quarter. The Jets reserves saved face scoring 32 second half points, but ultimately fell to the Giants by a score of 45-42.
The Jets secondary has struggled all preseason and this game was no different. It started on the Giants first drive of the night when Eli Manning completed a 57 yard pass to Mario Manningham. That set up a 5 yard score from Manning to the newly acquired tight end Jermichael Finley as the Giants took the early lead.
The Jets would give the ball back quickly when on a 2nd & 4 from the Giants 46 yard line, Geno Smith was intercepted on a pass intended for Eric Decker by another new member of the Giants, linebacker Nigel Bradham. The Giants would settle for a 43 yard field goal, but on the Jets next possession Smith threw his second interception, this time to cornerback Prince Amukamara. The Giants would capitalize two plays later on a David Wilson 2 yard touchdown run.
Following a three and out on the Jets next possession, Manning would connect with rookie Odell Beckham Jr. for a 55 yard touchdown. The Jets special teams responded with a 66 yard kickoff return by rookie Jalen Saunders, setting up a 1 yard touchdown pass from Smith to tight end Jeff Cumberland to close out the half. On his teams first half performance Rex Ryan commented, "The guys are trying to do too much out there, we as a staff have to make better calls, and the players need to trust those calls."
The second half was a battle of big plays by both teams reserve players making their case for roster spots. It started with another long kickoff return by Saunders for 77 yards that set up a Michael Vick 1 yard touchdown run. Odell Beckham Jr continued his domination of the Jets secondary, scoring again on a 30 yard TD pass from Ryan Nassib.
Jets rookie QB Tajh Boyd made his statement for a spot on the 53 man roster by throwing two 4th quarter TD's, one to receiver Jacoby Ford and another to tight end Zach Sudfeld. Backup running back Alex Green also scored on a 60 yard run to give the Jets a late 42-38 lead, but the Giants drove 10 plays on their final drive ending with the deciding score, a four yard TD pass from Nassib to TE Larry Donnell.
Regarding the comeback that fell short Rex Ryan said, "I'm proud of the way we fought in the second half, we need to start with the same intensity."
The Jets will finish off their preseason schedule with a trip to Philadelphia next Thursday to face the Eagles.
Injury report: Wide Receiver Jalen Saunders left the game with a broken collarbone. He's expected to miss 7 weeks.
