Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)

        Jets Gameday Preview: Week 9

The Jets head to Buffalo to close out the first half of the 2017 season. On the other side are Rex Ryan and his Bills, and as always the crowd at Ralph Wilson Stadium at New Era Field will be an issue.

I don't care what you might think. Oh hey, look at us, we're 5-2, with a two game lead in the division that has been owned by the Patriots 14 times in the last 16 seasons. Oh hey, the Bills are 2-5, Rex Ryan is on the hottest seat known to mankind, the team is dysfunctional. Throw it out the window. The Bills are our kryptonite, and there are no two ways about it. Dating back to 2013, the Bills have beaten the Jets 6 consecutive times. It doesn't matter where they play; the Bills just are a thorn in the Jets' sides, knocking the Jets out of the playoffs in week 17 each of the last two seasons, once in Orchard Park, and once in East Rutherford. Maybe it has something to do with the Bills wanting to show that they are New York's team, being the only NFL team to actually play their home games in the Empire State of New York. Whatever the motivation, the Bills love beating the Jets, and you know that Rex Ryan, no matter how bad might be everywhere else, knows how to get his team ready to play the Jets and Patriots twice every season. No matter the record, they come to play in their divisional rivalries, and they've shown it.

Fortunately, the Jets will not get to see the star rookie running back Christian McCaffrey, who is sidelined for one more week with an ankle injury. Before getting hurt, he was nearly unstoppable on special teams, averaging over 25 yards per punt return, and over 35 yards per kick return. But, still suiting up for the Bills Mafia is LeSean McCoy, who racked up over 200 yards against the Jets in week 2 of last season BEFORE getting injured shortly BEFORE halftime. The Jets may be solid against the run, but Dalvin Cook exploited a couple of holes against them last week. Will the trend continue? Meanwhile, the quarterback position has very little depth, but it's still Tyrod Taylor hanging onto the starting job for dear life, as he has had much better seasons (like 2015) than this one. But, hey, that happens. Just ask Ryan Fitzpatrick. Taylor likes to use his legs, but when he does air it out, he relies on Sammy Watkins to create big plays. For what it's worth, he also has Emmanuel Sanders, who left Denver just a year removed from being led to the Super Bowl victory by Peyton Manning. Also in the mix is Jamison Crowder, in his first season in Western New York after being traded from the Redskins midway through last season. Charles Clay continues to prove his worth at tight end, despite being targeted very little the last three weeks. Two youngin's round out the wide receiver depth chart: Chris Brown and Jordan Payton, but I doubt that either will have a significant impact on this game.

This Bills defense still had their trademarked intimidation factor, and nowhere is that seen better than on the front lines. Marcell Dareus and rookie Floridian Caleb Brantley are flanked on either side by Shaq Lawson and Jerry Hughes. Remember that old UPS slogan "What can Brown do for you?" Well, that's a great question to ask the Bills, because they have three linebackers named Brown. Zach is the best in pass coverage, Preston has been near the top of the league in tackles all season, while Arthur is known to jar ballcarriers of all shapes and sizes, despite sitting in a back up role behind Preston. Reggie Ragland, who had a HUGE game against the Geno Smith led Jets in last year's season finale, is the final starting linebacker. It is worth noting that Zach Orr changed his mind about retiring at the start of the season, and signed a free agent deal with the Bills, but he ranks lower on the depth chart, so don't expect to see him too much. Finally, the secondary does have some firepower. The two ballhawkers playing corner, Stephon Gilmore and Ronald Darby are joined by four safeties, two at either position, jockeying for control of playing time. They are: Corey Graham, former Cowboy J.J. Wilcox, Aaron Williams, and former Freday coached Viking Robert Blanton. Hey, you never know what these guys might bring.

Re: Flying Through the Big Apple - RoundingThird's New York Jets (M17)

Gameday Recap: Bills 31, Jets 17
6 turnovers, no defense: Just like what we thought could happen

This one was over from the start, and Sammy Watkins' athletic touchdown catch on the game's first drive only emphasized that point.

What can I say? We saw this as a possibility, especially if the 5-2 record, and five game win streak, got to the players’ heads. It did, and they looked absolutely flat. It didn’t matter what Rex Ryan threw at them, the Jets just didn’t look like they wanted to be there. I can’t really blame anybody in particular; it was a team stinkfest. I’ve said it a bunch of times: The way to beat the Jets is to play tight zone defense, taking away the run, and forcing Mariota to throw it. Eventually, he’ll make a couple of mistakes. But, he wasn’t the only one. Once Todd Gurley fumbled a kickoff return right after a Ryan Succop field goal made it 10-3, you felt all hope for the Jets disappear into the raucous crowd at the Ralph. Before long, it seemed like the 3rd down train siren was blaring every time the Jets had the ball, and “Shout,” the Bills’ touchdown song was playing every time the Bills had the ball.

The opening drive was atrocious. One of the major problems the Jets have had this season is getting teams off the field on third down. This, obviously, was no different. Tyrod Taylor showed 2015 form, picking apart the Jets defense, relying on Sammy Watkins, and then handing it off to Shady whenever he saw fit, because the Jets couldn’t stop either option. It was a third down when Watkins wrestled with Marcus Williams and coming down with a 19 yard touchdown to make it 7-0, a lead in which the Bills would not give up. This was the first game in 2017 that the Jets did not have a lead at all during the game. Anyway, the Jets had a pretty nice looking drive, basically their only one of the day, but it fizzled out when Mariota scrambled out of the pocket and had to throw it away. Nick Folk continued his pretty darn good season by hitting a 40 yarder in an 11 mph cross breeze, something he probably couldn’t have done last season. It was 7-3, but as I said, it all went downhill from there.

A six minute drive by the Bills brought them within striking distance, after a couple of third downs, and a terrible sequence by the Jets. Leonard Williams sacked Tyrod as he was dropping back for a screen pass, a loss of 11 yards, but on the very next play, Lenny had Taylor in his grasp only to let the Buffalo quarterback break free and find a wide open Watkins, I might add, for a gain of 30 yards. Yet somehow, the Jets got a goal line stand, and were pretty relieved forcing the Bills to a Succop field goal. After all, that only made it 10-3, and the way the first drive had gone, they felt pretty good. But that went away fast. Gurley fumbled the kickoff, recovered by J.J. Wilcox. A couple of plays later, it was Tyrod finding Watkins, again, to make it 17-3. Next drive? Mariota’s first pick of the day. Now, just when they thought all hope was lost, Darron Lee undercut Taylor’s pass to Emmanuel Sanders (he should’ve stuck with Watkins). The Jets made a couple of plays, and on a 3rd down play action call, Mariota found Devin Smith sprinting over the middle of the field. Hey, it was 17-10! We could see light at the end of the tunnel. It didn’t last long though, because the Jets left far too much time on the clock for their own defense. LeSean McCoy looked like he was running through a leaf pile, and Tyrod continued to have the game of his season. It was a two yard run by Shady with 16 seconds left in the first half that made it 24-10. Somehow, Coach Bowles wasn’t that mad. He knew this could happen, and it boy did it.

Coming out of the locker room with the ball, the Jets thought they could at least get back in it. Nope. Another pick from Mariota derailed that train, and after the Jets forced the first Bills’ punt of the day, Mariota got too aggressive. He was scrambling for a first down, and with three Buffalo defenders approaching, dove head first for the first down, since he was in the neighborhood of the marker. All it took for the ball to come out was a nudge from the Zach Brown Band. In the right place at the right time, Ronald Darby scooped it up at the Jets 40 yard line. It only took three plays before Shady put the game on ice, running off tackle for 16 yards to the end zone without being within 2 yards of any Jets defenders, an absolutely horrendous sequence. And we thought the Browns were bad. That was basically the icing on the cake, stretching the Bills lead to 31-10, and there were still 2 minutes left in the third. Those loyal members of the Bills Mafia got to “Shout” until they could “Shout” no more. Playing for pride, Gronkowski made an athletic move, getting his head, and the ball across the pylon, fighting off Aaron Williams, but that was in garbage time. It helped, though, making the game seem far closer than it really was. I have one remaining question: Why can’t the Jets beat the Bills? We’ll try to answer that in a few weeks at MetLife, but until then, it’s time to go out west.

Shady provided the exclamation point with this 3rd quarter touchdown run, capping a pretty solid day with over 150 yards on the ground.

Gronk shows why he should be an MVP candidate, never quitting on himself or the team, putting in all of his effort to get across the goal line in a garbage time situation.

Marcus Williams' snatching of a floater thrown by Tyrod Taylor across his body was the only play that the Jets defense could be proud of, considering it prevented the Bills from even more points.

Does Rex Ryan still show up to Jets practices every day? Man the Bills have your number lol, although it'll really be satisfying once you finally beat them.

Side note, looks like you're 5-3 at the halfway point while I was 6-2. Who's better now

At least I didn't create my own quarterback.

True, but he is only a 67 overall with normal development. Plus you traded for Marcus freaking Mariota haha.

We'll see who makes it further at the end of the season

                      Jets Gameday Preview: Week 10

The Broncos might not be having a good year, but still, the trip up to Sports Authority Field gets you mighty high (in more ways than one).

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. Um, these are the Super Bowl 50 champs, right? Last season they went from being on top of the world to the cellar of the AFC West. Halfway through this season, they find themselves in the same position. They've lost all grasp of the home field advantage that led them to the Super Bowl, and now, very few teams fear the trek up to the Mile High City. But, it is important to note that the Bills were just as down in the dumps until last week, so like always, just assuming a victory is the worst thing we could do.

So, the Broncos are struggling in the post-Peyton era. They are looking for answers at the quarterback position. Last year, it was Trevor Siemian under center, but coming into 2017, coach Gary Kubiak decided to switch it up, and went with the sophomore pro from Memphis, Paxton Lynch. It's not that either quarterback has been overly mediocre, it's that they've been overly dependent on the passing game. C.J. Anderson has been struggling mightily, but part of that has to be from opposing defenses realizing that the Broncos will try to rely on the run to facilitate the performance of their quarterback and their offense as a whole. Even so, the Broncos have a great group of receiving targets. Very few in the league can consistently outperform Demaryius Thomas, and due to his experience, has really become the leader of this team, at least on offense (Sorry #58). The Broncos also have one of the more exciting rookies for Lynch to throw to in Ohio State's Curtis Samuel. This summer, free agent Kenny Stills joined the party, while Jacob Tamme, at tight end, is another holdout from the Super Bowl winning days.

The Broncos defense has dropped off significantly since Super Bowl 50, but they are still respectable. The Jets are catching them at a good time, however. Denver's two best linebackers are hurt: Von Miller and Brandon Marshall. In fact, Miller tore his MCL partially in last week's loss to Los Angeles, and is out until week 17, so his season is basically over, as the Broncos will probably shut him down if John Elway has any intelligence whatsoever. The secondary is still up to its 2015 strength. Led by Chris Harris, Jr. and Aqib Talib, the secondary is by far the best part of the Broncos' roster. Of course, we can't forget to mention new Broncos Brandon Flowers, and the safeties, Darian Stewart and T.J. Ward. The front line, on the other hand, might be the weakest area of this team. Derek Wolfe is in charge of one side, but it only goes downhill from there. Interestingly enough, Greg Hardy finds himself starting on the defensive line for the Denver Broncos, after years of domestic issues. Signing him shows just how desperate the Broncos are. Meanwhile, defensive tackle is where things are really down. When Jamie Meder and Darius Kilgo are your starters, and you're an NFL team, and not some low level MUT team, you have an issue. We'll give the linebackers a break, since they're noticeably depleted. Filling in for Miller and Marshall are Travis Feeney and Stephen Tulloch, respectively, joining Shane Ray, the only regular starting today for the Broncos at linebacker.

Gameday Recap: Jets 40, Broncos 9
Gurley has career day as Jets demolish Broncos; Gronk gets hurt late

Todd Gurley watches Jace Amaro (88) lay a beautiful block on Darian Stewart (26), allowing him to break free for an 85 yard touchdown run in the 3rd, the highlight of his fantastic day.

With a showdown looming in Los Angeles with the one loss Chargers next week, the Jets couldn’t have turned off those thoughts better. They lived in the moment today, and as a result, thrashed the Broncos in a way that has started to become commonplace here in 2017. Marcus Mariota was 1000% better than last week’s version, throwing only 3 incompletions in the last three quarters, two of which came in the last drive that the Jets actually tried on. Mike Williams, at long last, got into the end zone for the first time in his career, on a 70 yard play in the first quarter. But the star of the day was Todd Gurley. The Jets’ workhorse, in a stadium of Broncos, went off, running his way for over 200 yards, hitting paydirt four times. Not only was that in striking distance of the NFL record, two of his touchdown runs were at least 40 yards, including an 85 yarder that put the nail in the Broncos’ coffin for the game, and quite possibly, their season, as they drop to 2-7.

The Jets deferred the opening kickoff, like they always do, and forced a quick Denver three and out, showing everybody at Sports Authority Field why they always give their opponent the ball first. On this day of alternate uniforms, the Jets, wearing their New York Titans AFL uniforms, worked the ball downfield, but something was just out of sync between the ex-Titan Mariota and his receivers. Gurley got off to an average start, with 4 carries for 30 yards on that first drive, which ended in a punt pinned inside the five by Lachlan Edwards. C.J. Anderson got to the 11 yard line, on what was really his only decent sized hole on the afternoon. That was the extent of the Broncos momentum. Their 75 year anniversary throwbacks weren’t good to them today. On that very next play, Darron Lee came in untouched, and dropped Paxton Lynch all the way back at the goal line for a safety, the Jets’ first of this season. Two plays after the free kick, Mariota found Mike Williams over the middle, and he proceeded to cross the field, using his speed to break away from the Broncos’ vaunted secondary. T.J. Ward finally caught up to him, but after the rookie wide receiver had crossed the goal line. Just like that it was 9-0.

Darron Lee brings the hammer, wrapping up Paxton Lynch inside the goal line, resulting in a safety, and giving the Jets a 2-0 lead.

There goes the rook! 9 games into his first season, Mike Williams finally scores his first touchdown in the NFL. It just happened to be on a 70 yard catch and run from Super Mario.

The Jets shut down the Broncos yet again, with another three and out, keeping the Broncos without a first down until the second quarter. On offense, the Jets worked the ball down the field slowly, for one of the few times on the day. But, it didn’t matter, and Gurley got his day going with a three yard scamper on the last play of the first quarter to make it 16-0. Paxton Lynch was finally able to find some open receivers, and led the Broncos on a very nice looking drive, that stalled in field goal range. The Jets were just having one of those days. Even when the Broncos thought they had something going, the Jets stepped up, and caused the drive to stall in field goal range. The Jets explosiveness cost them a bit on the next drive. After working the football across midfield with a medley of passing and running, Gurley went off for a 40 yard touchdown. While everything was all well and good, up 23-3, there was 4 minutes left on the clock, and as a result, the Broncos were able to get a second field goal going into the break. It wouldn’t matter though, as the Jets were well on their way.

We're showing you this 40 yard Gurley TD run as an example of the size of the holes he had today. The Jets offensive line is admittedly weak, but for whatever reason, they showed up today.

Coming out with the ball in their hands to start the second half, the Jets had their one slip up. Mariota waited just a split second too long to throw, and was stripped of the ball while releasing it, allowing Darian Stewart to fall on it. But, the football gods evened things out shortly thereafter. Marcus Gilchrist slipped in coverage, but Lynch overthrew Demaryius Thomas, finding Gilchrist, who was on the seat of his pants at midfield. The Jets did go three and out, however, going for it on 4th down in no man’s land, and being stuffed by Denver. Denver took over, but had to punt, a beauty by Britton Colquitt angled out of bounds at the 15. That didn’t matter at all. On the very first play, Gurley went off for that 85 yard run we talked about, made possible by Jace Amaro’s fantastic block of Darian Stewart. All Gurley had to do after that was outrun Aqib Talib. By the time he did, it was 30-6 in favor of the Jets. The Broncos struggled to move the ball consistently, and the Jets got the ball back. Coach Bowles wanted to give Todd Gurley a little rest, so Mariota found Gronk a couple times on the sideline, who broke free down to the Denver 8 on the latter occasion. He hit him one more time across the middle for what was originally called a touchdown, but after being automatically reviewed, was called back to the 1. That allowed Gurley to get his fourth touchdown, with 9 minutes to play, plenty of time to strive for five, which would be the single game NFL record.

After that fourth touchdown, though, things got a little wonky. Jordan Jenkins sacked Paxton Lynch in the midst of being blocked. As impressive as that was, his hand got curled up on the play, and his elbow popped right out of its socket. He’ll be out two games. Replacing him is rookie Elijah Lee, so for the time being, the outside linebacker positions for the Jets will be manned by a pair of fellas named Lee. Anyway, the Broncos went for it on fourth down, Lynch firing over the middle to Thomas, who couldn’t hold on after being rocked by Rontez Miles and Buster Skrine. The Jets had 6 minutes left, and wanted to try to get Gurley the NFL record, but on a third down, Mariota tried a dump off for Gronkowski, who dropped it after being hit by T.J. Ward, and immediately went to his shoulder, the same shoulder that caused him to miss the second half of last season. All of Jets (or NY Titans) Nation held their breath, and the diagnosis of a torn shoulder nearly took the life out of them. But, as bad as it sounds, he’ll only miss three games. I’m thankful, because it could’ve been a lot worse. Now, onto L.A.

Bowles: Jets to Stay on West Coast this Week

The Jets will get very acquainted with the city of Angels this week, as they will stay there for 6 days in advance of their showdown with the Chargers.

November 13, 2017 -- Upon realizing the logistics of the schedule, the Jets decided some time ago that for this week of the season, in between road games in Denver and Los Angeles, it would make more sense for the Jets to stay on the west coast, training and practicing in Los Angeles, instead of flying home, taking a day off, having three days of practice, then flying back out west. Now, with this set up, the Jets will have 4 days of practice, with a walk through on Saturday at StubHub Center, site of Sunday's game, a venue that is unfamiliar to many people in the NFL. Coach Todd Bowles announced the team's plans to the public in his post game press conference following Sunday's 40-9 win over the Broncos in Denver.

So, what exactly does this mean? The Jets will stay at the same hotel they would have ordinarily stayed at if they were here for only one night. The hardest part of this entire process was finding a place to train and practice. With college football season about to enter its most exciting weeks, with LA's own USC and UCLA preparing for the battle of LA at the Rose Bowl this Saturday, that takes their training facilities out of the pictures. Plus, UCLA's brand new, state of the art facility, the Wasserman Football Center, is nearing completion, but still not quite ready. Of course, Roger Goodell would find some rule violation if the Jets used the facilities of LA's other team, the Rams. So, after exploring all possible options, the Jets had to settle for EXOS Los Angeles, a private training facility for folks of all ages, and focusing on all sports, and not necessarily just football. That means that the field the Jets will practice on does not have uprights, so Nick Folk will not get much kicking work in this week; he will have to rely on the sideline kicking net that you see in games. While the field, and the adjacent weight room is still very, very nice, the amenities just aren't quite what NFL teams are accustomed to. The biggest benefit to practicing at EXOS? It lies within eyesight of the StubHub Center. At least the Jets will have a week to scope the 30,000 seat stadium out in advance of Sunday's game, which just may be the biggest game so far this season.

The field available for use at EXOS. You can see the lights and main concourse of the StubHub Center in the background.

The weight room located inside EXOS. The Jets will have to make due with these slightly less luxurious facilities than their Atlantic Health Training Center in Florham Park, New Jersey.

So, why is it so important that the Jets stay out west. Well, Coach Bowles and GM Freday fear that two cross country flights in such a short span will cause the Jets to be, well, jet lagged. They think that the lack of energy that that would entail would hinder their performance on the field in a manner so significant, it could derail the momentum of the 6-3 start to their season. Of course, the Jets started 6-3 last year, then missed the playoffs, but that's irrelevant. It is so important that the Jets be on top of their game because the team on the other sideline, the Los Angeles Chargers, come into this week at 7-2, with fresh legs, just off their bye week. They are led by the 2016 NFL MVP in Philip Rivers, who has had a choke hold on the top of most of the major quarterbacking statistics since the start of last season. The Chargers, while 7-2, still sit behind the 8-1 Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West, so if the playoffs began today, they would be the #5 seed, the same spot they had last year, when they finished 10-5-1. Thus, they are likely to come out extremely motivated, trying to catch up to the Chiefs and earn that #1 seed. The Jets on the other hand, currently hold the #2 seed, and will try to hold onto that, fighting hard with the Texans and Bengals, the other two AFC division leaders. Make sure to tune to CBS on Sunday to catch this one. It will be the nationally televised game, available everywhere in the United States except in the Baltimore and Pittsburgh markets. As per usual with the #1 game in the 4:25 ET/1:25 PT window, Jim Nantz and Phil Simms will be on the call, and I know that you won't want to miss them.

Here the Jets come, away from home for the last three weeks now, having stayed on the West Coast all week. While they might be rested, they're homesick, and bring in a depleted roster. In fact, both teams are dealing with injuries, just another source of adversity you have to overcome if you wish to have postseason success. This game, I feel, will show if the Jets are playoff ready. We already know the Chargers are playoff ready; they got there last year after beating out the Jets, among others, for one of the AFC's two wild cards. But can the Jets handle the heat? There's only one to find out.

There's no question that both of these teams have unstoppable offense, except for the Jets turn it over. The only difference? They get it done in different ways. See, while both teams rank similarly in offensive yards and points per game, it's the Chargers that have the league's second best passing attack, while the Jets lead the world in running, and by a wide margin at that. Los Angeles is led by Philip Rivers, who's making a great case for winning back-to-back MVP, something that hasn't been done since Peyton Manning did it in 2008-09. He's been wrestling for the league's passing crown with Aaron Rodgers all season, currently 153 yards behind the Green Bay gunslinger, and has only turned the ball over 3 times in 9 games, numbers that one might expect from somebody like Peyton or Brady, but not Rivers, given his track record before last season. So, as you could imagine, the Chargers really have no need to run the ball, but when they do, they prefer Branden Oliver over Melvin Gordon, the starter in 2016, who lost his job due to issues with ball security. Now we get to the receivers, the biggest beneficiary of this high-powered offense. Brian Quick has emerged as Rivers' go-to target, instead of Keenan Allen, whose injury history might have affected his ability to gel with Rivers. He's healthy now, but just not putting up the same numbers as he once did. Also lining up out wide are Travis Benjamin and Stevie Johnson. When longtime Charger, and future first ballot hall of famer Antonio Gates retired over the summer, Hunter Henry officially took over the reigns at the tight end position.

The Chargers have a very exciting defensive line and secondary. I think it's safe to say that the highlight, at either level, is Joey Bosa, who gave Sam Freday nightmares, terrorizing B1G Conference QBs for years at Ohio State, with Freday coaching up the road in Cleveland. On the other side? How about current NFL sacks leader, Corey Liuget? Does that scare you? Name a iconic duo. I'll wait. Oh yeah, how about Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson? Bruh, we got this. Anyway, you might say that the defensive tackle position for the Chargers is a little weak, and it is, but those two ends more than make up for it. We kind of skipped over the linebackers earlier, when we were talking about the defensive line and secondary, but these guys aren't anything to scoff at either. As a team, this defense has been playing at a high of a level as any, except for, well, the Jets and the Chiefs. This is probably one of the more complete rosters the Jets will see all year. Jerry Attaochu and Melvin Ingram are the OLBs, with Denzel Perryman and Manti Te'o man the middle positions. And then that secondary. We've been hyping it up for a reason. First thing you'll notice? The #1 safety to come out of this year's draft, another scary ex-Buckeye, Malik Hooker. Another rookie, West Virginia's Rasul Douglas is at corner, mirroring the veteran Casey Heyward, and having to step up in the absence of Jason Verrett. As if that wasn't enough, two veterans are sharing time at the other safety position: Duke Ihenacho and Donte Whitner, whose punishing hits and tough guy demeanor served Sam Freday well when Whitner played under him in Cleveland a couple of years back. Phenomenal offense, exceptional defense? There's a reason these guys are 7-2. It's too bad that right now, they're only a wild card team.
