Hello all and welcome to a dynasty report in Waco, TX that starts in the year 2017, where the Baylor Bears look to embark on a new era after firing Art Briles. After the firing quite a few of the Baylor football players departed from the team, and on top of that, the NCAA set a limit on the yearly amount of scholarships Baylor could use for the next 4 years. With Baylor missing out on all the big-time names in the off season they looked wayyy outside the box in left field to hire....... a guy named Phil Mariner. So ahead to 2017 we go and toward a new era for the Bears of Waco.

Pictured Above: Newly hired Baylor Bears football coach, Phil Mariner

Waco, TX-- It's official, Art Briles has been fired from Baylor University following several serious allegations. We've discussed them enough already during the gray period that was his last year (2016, 3-9 overall). And now it's time to move on. The Bears have hired a first time head coach in Phil Mariner to guide the Baylor football program.

Phil Mariner is a 56 year old coach who is relatively new to the coaching world, just having been in the coaching world 6 total years. His latest job was Quality Control in Jacksonville, FL, for the Jaguars.

Mariner was hired primarily because no other coach on the market valued this job. The NCAA has issued a 4 year scholarship ban to the Baylor Bears starting in 2017 and lasting until the 2020 season. The ban issues that in 2017 Baylor has a total of 10 scholarships, in 2018 Baylor has a total of 12 scholarships, 2019 Baylor has 15, and in 2020 Baylor has 20 scholarships.

It's a risky hire in Mariner, but no other coach was willing to come to Baylor. It's a top heavy team in juniors and seniors, not to mention a lot of top talent has fled. Combined with the scholarship ban Baylor's football future doesn't look great. Mariner will have to have way more hits than misses on the recruiting trail in his early career to have any success.

Phil Mariner is expected to have a press conference addressing the 2017 season shortly before the opening ballgame against rival SMU.

Baylor has quite a bit of talent this year in the forms of QB Seth Stephenson and FS Eric Green among other players. Behind that talent is a lot of question marks such as: can the o-line block consistently enough to open up the offense, who are the receivers that become go-to guys, and can the Bears generate any pressure from the DLine. After those questions are who are the precious few recruits Mariner goes after in his first years on the job.

            Go Bears!

Description: Baylor welcomes the Roadrunners of UTSA in the Bears' home opener. Unfortunately, it did not turn out the way Baylor expected it to. UTSA shot out to an early 17-3 halftime lead and held on to win 23-20. Seth Stephens was leading a late charge for Baylor when he threw an interception that would effectively end the game. Baylor relied on Stephenson heavily throughout the game, failing to garner anything through the ground game. The Bears drop their first game of the season and now look ahead to ACC foe Syracuse.

                  Coaches Corner with Phil Mariner:

                  Offense
                  - We got behind early in the game and tried to rely on our QB Seth Stephenson way too much. We completely abandoned our game plan of trying to establish a rushing attack, throwing the ball 48 times. I don't think we have the weapons on the outside to be running that type of offense, and it showed. We need to have more patience in trying to establish a rushing attack
                  - Asante Jackson is a fine starter for us, but nobody's stepped up behind him. Cedric Perkins looked sharp as a freshman Early Enrollee, but he's hit a wall ever since the season started. We might need to get a little more creative on offense to ease the load off Jackson.

                  Defense
                  - Our defense was completely awful. Mike Graves (MLB) and Eric Green (FS) are our most explosive defenders through three games, but other than that we have a lot of work to do. Teams have gashed us through the air and on the ground in back to back weeks. Our defensive game plans going forward have to revolve around Graves and Green being up near the line of scrimmage

                    Coaches Corner with Phil Mariner:

                    - Another frustrating game. We more than held our own against a top 15 team in the nation, but we just didn't have the talent nor the depth to keep up with a SEC team for 4 quarters. The team fought hard, which is what you love to see, but there were countless simple mistakes that cost a shot in this one. We had a good game plan and stuck to it for the most part but execution killed us here.

                    - As good as the two freshman Earl Raymond and Willie Roth have been so far, they both showed they have plenty of things to work on. The biggest being drops. Each receiver dropped multiple passes on key third downs in the 2nd half to end drives. We need another target in the passing game to spread out the defense.

                    - Our defense actually played pretty decent here, forcing three interceptions total. Eric Nichols had an absolutely phenomenal game. The young SS sophomore had 3 sacks, 2 interceptions and 1 TFL. Mike Graves and Eric Green continue to swarm to the ball. Our defense isn't bad in the secondary as a whole, but our run defense is terrible. We have to address this going forward.

                    - Overall, proud of the team but we won't accept moral victories. It's time to move on. We have another tough one coming up against #9 Missouri 4-1, so we'll have to regroup and refocus.

                    Go Baylor! 1-3

                      Coaches Corner with Phil Mariner:
                      - Just a terrible game all around from our team. Stephens didn't play as bad as his stat sheet displays (still, 3 interceptions is 3 interceptions no matter how you look at it). He's just trying to do to0 much right now. Love his effort, and the kid wants to win, but he has to understand that its okay to throw it away, hit the check down route, take the sack, etc. Too many times he's thrown it into coverage, we need a better game plan for his skill set going forward. We did have a 98 yard TD reception, that was nice to see.

                      - Our running game is getting worse and worse. Asante Jackson had an abysmal rushing average (2.2 yards a carry) and failed to rush for over 50 yards. Our lack of a rushing attack is clearly affecting our passing game, outlined above. We've played two good defenses in back-to-back weeks, but our lack of a run threat is something to worry about going forward.

                      - Our defense played an above average game for the second week in a row, but we still have a lot to improve, most notably our run D. It seems this team plays best with a "bend-but-don't-break" play style, so we'll try and implement that in the upcoming weeks. As a defense we have to understand it's okay to give up a few yards and first downs here and there, but the big plays other teams are getting on us are really killing us. Our linebackers have to start eliminating runners from the opposing team from getting past the second level of our defense.

                      - Not a great start to the season, through 5 games we are 1-4. We still have a tough schedule coming up with conference play just getting underway. We're a few adjustments from being a decent team, but there is a lot that needs improving on both sides of the ball. We'll need to fix these in a hurry if we want to try and salvage this season.

                      Go Baylor! 1-4

Baylor Bears 1-4 @ Kansas State Wildcats 2-3

                        Date: Saturday, October 14th, 2017

It was another hard fought contest for Baylor, coming up just short on the road against Kansas State, 23-17. Phil Mariner's bunch showed heart and grit for four full quarters against the Wildcats, even being down by as much as 20-7 late in the third quarter. The Bears were able to claw their way back, sparked by another incredible performance by Pooh Stricklin. The wide out is making the most of his senior year. In the last two weeks Pooh as 12 catches for 249 yards and three touchdowns.

The Bears had a chance to win with a game winning drive late in the fourth; however, the drive would end with 19 seconds left to go in regulation after a failed fourth down pass attempt.

QB Seth Stephenson continues to act like a gunslinger despite playing in what was supposed to be a run-first offense at the beginning of the season. Stephenson has the size (6'4" & 215 lbs) and arm to be a next-level talent, but his decision making and turnover rate have to improve drastically. Both of his interceptions in today's game came at crucial moments in the game, on drives that were threatening to score touchdowns if not at least field goals. If the inexperienced QB can't learn how to eliminate the mistakes, Mariner might opt to look at how he manages the offense going forward.

The defense displayed their usual traits in this one, getting annihilated on the ground and managing the opposition's passing attack. The Wildcats rushed for 244 yards on 34 attempts. Around the edge, off the tackles, up the middle, KSU did a little bit of everything. With that being said, Baylor's Pass defense only gave up 49 yards. That's a really positive sign.

It was another tough, frustrating game that our Baylor Bears would find themselves on the wrong end of. The team gave up 35 yards in penalties, but only punted twice. They had 2 turnovers, but managed 379 yards of total offense. It wasn't a terrible performance, they played hard and showed effort, but it was ultimately a performance that resulted in a L.

Phil Mariner's bunch moves to 1-5 and any hope of playing in a bowl game probably just went out the window. The coach isn't quite on the hot sea, but this is not how many analysts and the media projected the season to start off for Baylor. Halfway through the season and he hasn't exactly hit the ground running. But if Phil Mariner can finish strong and end the season at something like 4-8 (5-7 would be awesome but we won't hold our breath) while using his limited scholarships (10!!), then I think there is reason enough to be optimistic about the future of the program.

                        GO BAYLOR! 1-5
