Re: We Dem Boyz: Bringing Big O Back to the Big D (M18)

    Gameday Preview: Week 1

Make sure you rock the Big D tonight, folks! We have Zeke tonight, if only for one game, and those dreaded Giants are in town. Be loud, be proud!

So, the league gave us a break. Ezekiel Elliott is still going to miss six games, but since the league took too long to decide that fact, they're allowing him to play tonight's game against the evil New York Giants, who were basically the only team to figure us out last year, winning both matchups. But, this is a new year, and hope springs eternal. The Cowboys bring Coach Freday to the party, while the Giants bring a loaded defense, and brand new weapons for Eli Manning. The one thing that can still be counted on, however, is that the Giants will have a devilish time running the football, so the Cowboys will try to limit Eli's effectiveness in the air, in the hopes that he will be forced to turn to the running game, which is so bad, it could probably stop itself. Paul Perkins and Shane Vereen are the primary runners, but I can't reiterate to you enough how little that matters. Looking now to more important matters, we find the Giants' receiving core. You've heard of Odell Beckham, Jr., and you know that Sterling Shepard had a breakout rookie season. But then, after the Jets cut RoundingThird's favorite NFL player ever, the Giants swooped on in and picked him up. Despite his building age, Brandon Marshall will still be a big factor for the 2017 Giants, as he tries to reach the Postseason for the first time ever. The Giants also love their rookie tight end, Evan Engram, and their slot receiver/kick returner, and ex-Cowboy, Dwayne Harris. For a Cowboys defense that struggled virtually all preseason, they certainly have their hands full here in what could be an explosive offense performance, for either side, as we know what both offenses are capable of doing.

But, if I had to say, it should be a little more difficult for the Cowboys to put up big offensive numbers today, even with Zeke. As I said, this Giants defense is LOADED. Up front, there's the one and a half hand wonder, Jason Pierre-Paul, former Miami Dolphin and Miami Hurricane, Olivier Vernon, and the man they call Snacks (another ex-Jet), Damon Harrison, oh yeah, and rookie Dalvin Tomlinson, who last year at Alabama might have been part of the greatest collegiate defense ever. The linebackers aren't any less intimidating, but the one thing the Giants wish to improve on is their ability to pass rush with the linebackers. Devon Kennard and Jonathan Casillas flank either side, while Mark Herzlich is just the man in the middle, signed, sealed, and delivered. But the secondary is where this unit earns it money. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (DRC) and Janoris Jenkins witnessed comeback seasons in 2016, while then-rookie Eli Apple proved to be no slouch either. Fellow rookie, and another product of the UConn secondary, Andrew Adams became the story of the entire Giants' defense, while Landon Collins showed the league why the Giants drafted him after a sub-par rookie season in 2015. Dak Prescott must be careful today, if he knows what's good for him.

Game Recap: Giants 21, Cowboys 14
Cowboys squander 11 point 4th quarter lead thanks to 3 huge interceptions

Paul Perkins could not have been more wide open when he punched in the game-winning score with just under a minute to play.

Before I get to the gargantuan, Falcon-esque comeback, at least in terms of disappointment, I would like to explain just how much of a defensive battle this game was. The Cowboys and Giants combined for 8 sacks in the first half, 4 from each squad. The Giants would finish with 7 sacks, the Cowboys with 5. Both offenses were held under 150 yards in the first half, a number I would have expected, if anything, from the Cowboys offense given how good the Giants’ defense expects to be this season. But, the Cowboys defense? All Coach Freday had to say? He was impressed with how they played. You might look at the box score and see that they allowed more than 100 yards on the ground, something Freday prided himself on in past stops, but if the pass defense can continuously shut down the opposition like we saw here today, that’s not a big deal. Speaking of which, Odell Beckham didn’t have a catch until midway through the 4TH QUARTER. Yeah, you heard that right. Brandon Marshall didn’t have a catch until earlier on that same drive, so the Cowboys corners had to have been doing something right. The Giants put together one good drive, the game’s very first, where they did nothing on first or second down, before making everything on third down, until the last one, when they were short by inches and had to settle for a field goal from ex-Bill Dan Carpenter. But after that, the Giants offense went into hibernation even though they slowly began to run the ball better as the game went on.

The Cowboys, meanwhile, made some progress on their first drive, getting a couple first downs on the ground very quickly with Zeke, before Dak Prescott took three consecutive sacks in a row to bring a sudden thud to that drive. It was on the second drive when the Cowboys found their footing and settled in. A mix of Dak and Zeke put the Cowboys in position before Zeke walked in untouched from two yards out, making it 7-3. Sadly, though, that was basically it for the day for Zeke. The Giants absolutely ate him up from that point on, helping to explain why there were so many turnovers in the later stages of the game. But, anyway, back to the action. The Cowboys forced a Giants punt, and then the teams decided to have a little turnover contest. Dak threw his first interception of the day on a misread, thinking Eli Apple would take the underneath route on Brice Butler rather than taking Dez over the top. But, Paul Perkins, the Giants bellcow after Shane Vereen went down after taking a huge hit from Sean Lee in the first quarter, proceeded to cough up the football very soon thereafter, with Lee being the man again and scooping it up. But, the Cowboys couldn’t capitalize, through little to no fault of their own, as we have already emphasized how dominant these two defenses were, especially in the first half.

Zeke takes charge, giving the Cowboys their first touchdown of the season, on what, was sadly the last highlight of the day for Mr. Elliott.

Dallas got the ball first out of the locker room, and it quickly became apparent that Giants Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo had devised a plan for controlling the Cowboys’ superstar on the ground. So, the Cowboys were forced to take more of a pass first approach, which actually, believe it or not, didn’t serve as their downfall. The biggest thing slowing the Cowboys down were the countless passes that were knocked away or dropped with the arrival of contact. And, alas, after eating up half of the quarter getting into field goal range, a hit from Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie caused the football to shoot straight upward from Cole Beasley’s hands, into the hands of Landon Collins. Once again, however, the Giants gave the ball right back. Two plays after the Cowboys’ pick, Eli Manning, who had a relatively mediocre day, just didn’t see Anthony Hitchens at all and threw it right to him trying to jam it in to Sterling Shepard over the middle. The Cowboys did capitalize on this one, however. Dak took his time, one of the few opportunities on the day where he actually could do so, waited for Cole Beasley to get open before threading the needle and connecting with him from 14 yards out, extending the Cowboys lead to 14-3. The Giants had to punt again, so as the third quarter ran out, the Cowboys saw themselves as being in pretty good shape.

Dak to Beasley through that tight window, making it 14-3 Dallas in the third.

So where exactly did things go wrong for the Cowboys? Well, the most obvious would be when Dak started to turn the ball over, but that wasn’t until later. The momentum shifted when Dan Bailey came on for a 51 yard field goal, well within his range, and left it a good 10-15 yards short, for no apparent reason. Finally, the Giants broke through, putting together their best drive of the day, getting into the red zone for just the second time (the first drive ending with the Perkins’ fumble), before getting smothered by great Dallas playcalling, and settling for a field goal. Nonetheless, it was now a one possession ball game, 14-6 Dallas. Now, we can pretty much sum up the rest of the game.

On the next drive, Dak threw an interception, to Mark Herzlich. 6 plays later, Paul Perkins took 4 Cowboys with him into the end zone from 5 yards out, bringing the Giants within two. Obviously, because Ben McAdoo is not a moron, even though all of Cowboys Nation likes to think he is, the Giants went for two, and I think it’s fair to say the Cowboys played it too well. You see, they knew that the Giants were probably going to run the ball, because it really had been all they could consistently do since that very first drive of the game. So, they crowded the line, with the ball being at the two yard line and all, and stuffed Perkins. Well, they stuffed him, but Perkins also fumbled. The ball rolled around as about 20 of the 22 players on the field came near to try to get a hand on it. It crossed the goal line as the pile grew bigger, and who was on the bottom of that pile? None other than Evan Engram. They counted the two points, and we had a 14-14 game with 4:46 to play.

Can you see the ball at the bottom of that pile? Well, then you can probably also see (maybe not), that it is being held onto for dear life by Evan Engram (88). That was probably one of the strangest plays I've ever seen in my 13th year of playing Madden.

Next up? Well, the Cowboys put together a nice drive, using Zeke to pick up short yardage first downs, running down the clock as they crossed midfield, hoping to get into field goal range. But, right out of the two minute warning, it was time for the Giants to RUN DRC, because I can’t resist a bad pun. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie picked up his first of two picks in the last two minutes of the game, and set up another touchdown from Paul Perkins, this one from six yards instead of five, this one untouched instead of dragging along half of the Cowboys roster, and this one to put the Giants in the lead, instead of just merely closing the gap. And, now, it seemed as if the Cowboys were just simply out of time. They had just under a minute, and 1 timeout. Coach Freday has led the improbable before, but the Cowboys just had absolutely no momentum, although they did try to get some back. Dak hit Ol’ Reliable Jason Witten on two straight plays to start the drive for a total of about 30 yards, the second play crossing midfield. He rushed the troops up to the line to spike it, with about 25 seconds left. He ran a similar play for Witten over the middle, but when the Giants had it figured out this time, so he looked down the right side to Terrance Williams, who was open. The problem was, he over shot him, and found DRC again. Ball game over. Big Blue pulled off a Coach Freday comeback to beat Big D in the season opener. Now, we say goodbye to Zeke until late October, and head to Denver.

Welp.. At least you didn't give up 40 points like you have in past 'chises.

But five INT's certainly seems uncharacteristic of Dak. I can't imagine that will happen again.

Haha, yeah, I'm not sure if it was the sliders or the Giants' secondary, which as I've stated multiple times, is scary good, but this game seems just a little harder than past versions of Madden, not that there's anything wrong with that. I might have to look into a slider tweak for the pass blocking, on both sides. Just a few too many sacks IMO.

Tough Loss, Perkins had a good game and Dak was a turnover machine.

Thanks for checking in! Perkins played well, but it was primarily because he just kept chipping away. He really didn't have any long runs. Eventually, though, he wore us down. Pair that with those turnovers, which I am determined NOT to repeat, and we are left with a very tough loss.

                      Gameday Preview: Week 2

Some of RoundingThird's happiest moments as an NFL fan took place in the Denver area. Will this trend continue, and allow Coach Freday to pick up his first win with the Cowboys today in the Mile High City?

This is a big one. Everybody knows how important it is to avoid starting 0-2, because once you do, playoff hopes become grim. For the Cowboys, the key today is to just stay focused. The league and the NFLPA are fighting to the death over the whole Zeke matter, so in the meantime, it's critical that the Cowboys focus on any and all on the field matters, rather than meddle into the off the field matters surrounding the squad. On the bright side, until further notice, Ezekiel Elliott IS in the Cowboys lineup, so let's take advantage of that, shall we?

Things were especially Rocky last year in Denver. A mediocre offense led to a third place finish in the AFC West, and a new head coach in Vance Joseph. The quarterbacking was probably the most obvious weakness, with Trevor Siemian battling then-rookie Paxton Lynch all season long for the starting spot. At least in the early going here in 2017, the job is Siemian's to lose, but that could change at any moment, especially with the presence of rookie Chad Kelly being added to the picture, nephew of Bills' legend Jim Kelly. The running game almost became too dried out last year, so John Elway went out and made a splash, signing veteran Jamaal Charles to rejuvenate the starter, C.J. Anderson. Meanwhile, the strength of this offense last year, and every year in the recent past, was its wideouts. The unit only got better when the team drafted Carlos Henderson out of Louisiana Tech, bringing him into a great situation, learning under the tutelage of both Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas. America's Favorite Tight End last year was Jake Butt, and although he backs up Virgil Green, his name and Twitter name, jbooty, are still worth mentioning.

This Broncos' defense, the reason why they can call themselves Super Bowl 50 Champs, has not really changed much. They still have one of the league's most feared linebacking corps and secondary. Both Chris Harris, Jr. and Aqib Talib are capable of being lockdown corners, but that just isn't their style. And, if you think you can just beat the Denver defense over the top, think again, because you'll run into Darian Stewart and T.J. Ward. Oh yeah, and don't run to the outside either, because you'll probably be gobbled up by Brandon Marshall, Shane Ray, or Shaquil Barrett. And if you think you'll even have time to throw, come again, because Von Miller puts the "ill" in "Miller." Other than that though, this defense is get-able. The D-Line isn't that great, except for Derek Wolfe, so maybe, just maybe, we can expose them and have a good day. Just hold back on the turnover party. K thx

Game Recap: Cowboys 19, Broncos 14
'Boys get into win column despite shaky defense

Down just two in the late stages of the 4th, Emmanuel Sanders coughs up the football in field goal range after taking a hit from Anthony Hitchens. Orlando Scandrick scooped it up, giving the Cowboys the stop they needed to seal the deal.

Well, this certainly wasn't your average game, but we'll take it, because it's Coach Freday's first win with the Cowboys. Each team only managed one offensive touchdown, a number far more surprising for the Broncos, considering Trevor Siemian torched the Dallas secondary for 340 yards on 20/22 passing. One of those incompletions was a catch by Marlon Brown out of bounds, and the other was an interception to Orlando Scandrick, so really, the ball never touched the ground all day on that Denver passing attack. But, it did hit the ground when Emmanuel Sanders fumbled in field goal range in the later stages in the 4th with his team down only 2, and that proved to be killer. The Cowboys, winning the turnover battle, a rarity under a Coach Freday led team, used that final turnover to take command of the momentum, and finish off the Broncos in this one.

The Broncos had a decent opening drive (the game's first drive), getting a couple of first downs through the air, before the Cowboys absolutely gobbled up C.J. Anderson, the theme of the day, and caused a punt. Then, Dak Prescott led what was basically a perfect drive. The ball never touched the ground on the Cowboys' opening drive, as Dak threw 4 passes to 4 different receivers before Zeke punched it in from a yard out to give Dallas the early 7-0 advantage. When Denver went three and out, the Cowboys really thought they had something going, but a third down pass to Cole Beasley was batted down, into the sliding mitts of Aqib Talib, who got up, and took it back to the house. All of a sudden it was a tie game, despite the Broncos only having a couple first downs worth of offense.

This shouldn't have been a pick. Dak threw the ball too well, despite all the drops by the Cowboys. This wasn't a drop, just good defense by Darian Stewart, who knocked the ball down. It didn't help that Aqib Talib was lying on the ground right where the ball ended up.

And, since we're obligated to show you both ends of a pick six, here's Talib finishing the job to tie the game early on in the second quarter. I love this camera angle, by the way.

The teams exchanged punts, before the Cowboys tacked on a field goal just inside the two minute warning, after Brice Butler took a 2nd and 10 reception down to the 1, but couldn't get the pylon, or the first down, and Zeke got stuffed on third and short. The Broncos punted, but then the Cowboys did as well, and Denver got one last shot before halftime. Carlos Henderson beat Byron Jones on an in cut, and dove head first to catch the 54 yard pass from Siemian as time expired, giving the Broncos a 14-10 halftime lead.

This was just a break down in coverage by the entire team, so I can't really blame Byron Jones, and I don't want to, since we are both UConn men. Nice catch by the rookie Henderson, though, to end the half.

Coming out of the locker room, the Broncos defense really stepped up. The Cowboys struggled for everything. Zeke had no holes, due largely to the world class Cowboys' offensive line being dominated at the point of attack by the Broncos' defensive line, buy and large the worst part of their defense. When Dak had time to throw, he got it off, but the Cowboys' receivers developed a case of the drops on the plane ride up to this high of an altitude. And, then, the drive killers were the sacks. Denver finished with 7 sacks (Cowboys actually had 8), but on multiple occasions when Dallas found themselves in the red zone, Dak was taken down, and the Cowboys had to settle for three, which they did 4 times, as Dan Bailey got his work in. But, the Broncos inability to run, and the pressure the Cowboys brought on Siemian, worked to keep them contained as well, so a defensive slugfest broke out in the second half, and as the third quarter came to a close, the Broncos hung onto dear life to their 14-13 lead.

Opening the 4th quarter with the ball, the Broncos felt a sense of urgency, because other than that home run ball before halftime, they had a lot of yards through the air, but nothing to show for it, since their only other touchdown had been a pick six. On third and really long, after David Irving had collected two consecutive sacks for the Cowboys, Trevor Siemian threw it up to nobody in particular, and Orlando Scandrick had a relatively easy time picking it off, and bringing it down to the Denver 25 yard line before C.J. Anderson could bring him down. The Cowboys muddled through the Denver penetration, settling for a Dan Bailey field goal from extra point range that gave them a 16-14 lead with 9:24 to play. The Broncos got the ball back, and went to work. The Cowboys secondary, struggling to predict plays, and get stops, all day, fell apart. It only took 3 plays for the Broncos to get from their own 20 to the Cowboys 40. But, after Siemian hit Emmanuel Sanders at the Dallas 25, Anthony Hitchens came up from behind and knocked the ball loose, with Scandrick once again there to snatch it.

The Cowboys went on a long, methodical drive, trying to put it away with a touchdown, but just couldn't, having to settle once again for a Dan Bailey field goal, #4 on the day, with 1:49 to play in the ball game. The Broncos weren't done, though. They made some noise, once again working their way very quickly into Dallas territory, the only real defense for the Cowboys being the pass rush of DeMarcus Lawrence and David Irving. Once again, they racked up two straight sacks of Siemian, and on 4th and long, Siemian found Demaryius Thomas inside the red zone, but at least 5 yards short of the first down line. The game wasn't over, despite there being less than a minute left, however, because Denver still had all 3 timeouts, and the Cowboys hadn't been able to run the ball effectively on the second half. So, after gains of 2 and then 1 on the ground, the Cowboys knew they had to take a risk. On third down, with the crowd at their loudest all day, Dak called for a play action fake to Darren McFadden, who platooned in for the third down passing situation, before hitting him in the flat for an easy first down. Denver called their last timeout, and then all Dak had to was kneel. The Cowboys are on the board in 2017. It wasn't pretty, but you can't always expect it to be. But, hey, these first two games have been against two of the league's best defenses. Can we catch a break against Arizona next Monday night? We shall see.

                            Jets sign Colin Kaepernick

                            September 19, 2017

Florham Park, NJ --- Well, it seems like Coach Freday's old team still has a bit of life in them after all. After a 1-1 start, two games into what is expected to be one of the worst seasons in franchise history, the Jets today sent shock waves across the league by signing the very controversial free agent QB Colin Kaepernick. Now, I'm sure I don't need to address the off the field significance behind this signing, so I won't. But, as it pertains to football, it's a very interesting move for the Jets. As you remember, the Jets had great success in Coach Freday's scheme with a mobile QB, so the acquisition of Kaepernick helps to get back to that offensive system, which hadn't been overly incompetent through the first two games under the lead of veteran journeyman Josh McCown. In fact, McCown led the Jets to a rather dominating week 1 victory against Buffalo on the road, always one of the league's hardest places to play, and played well enough again last week in Oakland, giving the Jets a halftime lead, before the defense let them down in the second half. So, in other words, the play of the offense hasn't been bad enough to justify a move of this stature, so there must be some other motivation behind it...

Either way, through two weeks, nobody in the AFC East has really stood out. The Jets, Bills, and Patriots are all 1-1, with the Dolphins at 0-1, after having their opening game postponed due to Hurricane Irma, so at least right now, the Jets have something to play for, and are showing that they aren't quite ready to rebuild and give up on 2017 just yet.

                                Gameday Preview: Week 3

The roof will be closed at University of Phoenix Stadium tonight, but that doesn't mean these two teams won't be having a desert shootout

What goes better together than the Cowboys and Primetime football? Well, Giants fans might have an answer to that question, and most of America will tend to agree with them, that the Cowboys are on national TV too often, but hey, this is America's Team, so why not showcase them to all of America? For the second time in three weeks, or if you count last week's marquee late game, this is the 3rd straight week the Cowboys can be seen in households across America to start the 2017 season. What have they seen so far? A very stingy defense, far outperforming even Coach Freday's expectations, but also an offense that has yet to really hit its stride, due to, for lack of a better word, ineptitude when it comes to running the football. But, the Cardinals bring in one of the league's worst defenses (as well as one of the league's best offenses), so hopefully that will change.

For both Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald, it really is now or never. Both have expressed the possibility of retiring after this season, so now would be the perfect time to reach the pinnacle of the sport for the first time ever. And, their desperation is clearly showing. Palmer is among the league leaders in passing, behind that 40 year old GOAT in New England, while Fitz IS the league leader in receiving in the early going. But, they have more options, like David Johnson who can wear you out running the football, only to turn around and wear you out as a receiver. Now, there's something about this team and the names of their players. For some reason, they gravitate towards players with the same last name. At the tailback position, we already mentioned David Johnson, but what about his backup? He goes by the name of CJ2K, better known as Chris Johnson. And then, helping out Fitz in the passing game, are John Brown and Jaron Brown, both of whom could be competitive track stars. Moving away from the name game now, every team in today's NFL, except the Jets, need a solid, pass catching, big man tight end. For Arizona, that man is Jermaine Gresham. As I said, they've been tearing the cover off the ball as one of the league's best offenses through two games, winning a barn-burner in Indy last week after losing a shootout in Detroit in the opener. Tonight, they return home for the first time in 2017, so expect some raucousness out of the Red "C".

But that defense? Nah. There's a reason why their first two games have been so high scoring. They've struggled to stop teams through the air, so it'll be interesting how a run-first Cowboys team performs against them. In any regard, up front, guarding the ends are Robert Nkemdiche and Randy Starks, wrapped around Corey Peters and Xavier Williams like a Moe's Burrito. Now, there are two key injuries to linebackers that might slight change things up a bit. Last week in Indy, Deone Bucannon suffered a torn PCL, and is out until early August 2018. Meanwhile, veteran Karlos Dansby broke his toe in the week 1 loss to Detroit, and won't return until RoundingThird's birthday. So, that leaves the door open for first round draft pick Haason Reddick, from Temple, who Bruce Arians, as well as the entire coaching staff, is very, very high on. He'll be named the Pregame Gruden Grinder by Coach Gruden on the MNF broadcast. But, because football is a team sport, we're obligated to tell you about the other starters at linebacker, like Markus Golden, ex-Patriot Chandler Jones, and B.J. Goodson, who was just picked up this week to replace Bucannon. Finally, we reach the secondary, which two years ago, when this team reached the NFC Championship, was by far the strength of this team. Patrick Peterson can snag a pick out of mid air, as well as make you pay for punting it near him. Tyrann "The Honeybadger" Mathieu has developed a case of hard hitting syndrome, ringing the bells of wide receivers league wide. Tramon Williams, Sr. got out of Cleveland in a hurry, coming out west to have some fun. Finally, there's Tyvon Branch, who effectively began the long line of UConn safeties making it to, and having success, in the NFL, a list that includes Byron Jones on the other side of the ball, Andrew Adams, and Obi Melifonwu.
