The win was necessary here and I'm glad it was in that sort of fashion. The difference of time of possession was huge and getting to 2-2 is important, especially if the Mountaineers plan on staying in the Top 25.

        MEET A MOUNTAINEER…
        WR CHASE SYKES
JR; 6-1, 209 FORT WRIGHT, KY

LeBron Anthony Sykes was supposed to be a basketball star.

His parents, Steve and Alicia, decided to name him after the greatest basketball player of their time but LeBron Sykes wasn’t into basketball that much.

Every Saturday and Sunday as a kid, he would watch football with his dad, then go out and play with older brothers Wilt and Michael. Problem was no one could catch LeBron Sykes – even as a child playing with older kids – thus earning him the nickname Chase.

When it was time to graduate, West Virginia had an in – quarterback DaRon Barrett. Barrett also hailed from Fort Wright and he sold Sykes on how much Morgantown reminded him of Fort Wright.

Sykes was a big key of the 2040 team that lost in the BCS final to Miami, hauling in 67 passes. He missed five games due to a hamstring pull last season which resulted in only 37 receptions. Needless to say, Sykes is looking for a bounce back year in 2042.

          Game Notes
Iowa State enters with a 2-2 record and are coming off a 42-16 victory at Kent State.
West Virginia knocked off Colorado 38-10 last Saturday to even their record at 2-2. Duane is 2-0 against Iowa State during his WVU tenure. WVU beat ISU 27-6 in Morgantown in 2039 and won 25-10 in Ames in 2038. Duane's Penn State team lost in Ames in 2036 by a 27-24 margin. It was the Nittany Lions only loss in a 13-1 season that culminated with a Rose Bowl win over Memphis.

This team is all over the map. Look great one game, horrible the next. The ups and downs of coach mode I guess...

West Virginia cornerback Elgin Williams dislodges the ball from Iowa State quarterback Damon Hall. Seth Johnson would recover and score for WVU in a 33-15 Mountaineer win.

Mountaineers seal win over Iowa State with 21 points in fourth quarter

COACH KC DUANE POST GAME QUOTES

              On the game overall…

“Three games actually. 9-0 for us at the half. Excellent on defence but no finish on offence. Third quarter was all Iowa State – they march 86 yards on us for a major. Then we turn it over on a fumble and they score again to go up 15-12. Fourth quarter was all ours. We dominated in the final quarter.”

On freshman cornerback Michael DeAngelis three interceptions…

“This guy is sick. He’s a freshman and he’s got more picks for us to date than any player has had in a single season since we showed up at West Virginia. And he also made a great open field tackle on a screen early in the fourth quarter that forced them to punt deep in their own territory. One of six tackles on the day for him.”

On defensive end Seth Johnson’s second touchdown in as many games...

“Great hit by Elgin Williams coming on the blitz. Freshman corner who weighs 166 pounds and delivers that payload? Wow. Seth was the recipient of a great play by Elgin, but give Seth credit – he’s around the ball.”

On Nelson Bush, with five catches for 89 yards…

“For a guy who was supposed to be a JUCO depth guy when we recruited him, he has stepped up and made some nice plays for us. Always great to see someone contribute who you didn’t expect would be that guy.”

On the return of linebacker Mark Johnson and his insertion into the lineup at the expense of Nick Jacobs…

“Mark is a physical player who loves playing the run while Nick is more of a cover guy. We’ve been hemorrhaging against the run and Mark helped us out there with three TFL’s today.”

On the injury to wide receiver Nathan Harvey…

“He pulled his hamstring in warmups and we decided to keep him out of the lineup today. We have so much depth at receiver, so there was no need to risk further injury.”

On punter/kicker Dominic Tucker’s four field goal performance…

“There isn’t too many times where you lose your kicker like we did and then have your punter come in and go four for five in a game. Dom has been tremendous in holding the fort until Yanny returns.”

Heading into the 4th must've been scary, especially without the offense not being able to get much done. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the offense only scored two touchdowns? Might need to get some more offensive production, if the case.

Yes it was. Lol I’m an 88 - ISU was a 79. We haven’t fired on all cylinders yet. Moving the ball well - just can’t finish - had to settle for field goals - which were an adventure with the punter kicking them

                      West Virginia Football Press Release

Morgantown (WV) - The NCAA has informed West Virginia Athletic Department that cornerback Mike Burnett (SR; Delaware, OH) has been suspended for two games for participating in a NFL Fantasy Football league with a cash prize.

The university will not appeal the suspension and it is effective immediately.

There will be no further comment at this time.

                        MEET A MOUNTAINEER…
                        CR MICHAEL DEANGELIS
                        FR; 6-1, 174; TERRELL, TX

As a four star recruit, everyone knew that Michael DeAngelis had the potential to be a great player, but no one expected what was to come from the true freshman.

DeAngelis was promised the opportunity to be a starter if he played to his capabilities in training camp. The Terrell, Texas native did just that but what happened after that has Morgantown – and the nation – buzzing.

DeAngelis started off his West Virginia career with interceptions in his first four games. Now consider that the most interceptions in a season by a Mountaineer since KC Duane arrived in 2038 has been five by Antwon Rust in 2039.

Then came the game in Ames, Iowa where DeAngelis came up with three interceptions to help the Mountaineers defeat the Iowa State Cyclones by a 33-15 margin.

That gave him a NCAA-leading seven interceptions on the season and also earned him NCAA POW honors.

DeAngelis, a Texas All-State as a junior and senior, was ranked as the eighth best corner in his class last year but it’s becoming quite apparent that rating should have been way higher.

COACH KC DUANE POST GAME QUOTES

                            On the game overall…

“Our best game of the year by far. We hung 38 up at the half and then put in the two’s on offence. We did what we had to do and that is dominate a game and inspire some confidence with our guys. It also allowed us to see a lot of our two’s in the second half and I liked what I saw from some guys.”

On quarterback DaRon Barrett’s 247 yards passing and two TD’s in the first half…

“That’s the DaRon we have been waiting to see. Strong and decisive in the pocket, he looked great today – the best he’s looked all year long - especially in that downpour today. We loved what we saw from him today. Now we have to see that confidence every time he steps between the white lines.”

On Doug Smith’s 94 yards and three touchdowns rushing in the first half...

“Doug was a beast today. Like I said before, we he runs hard he’s impossible to stop. The big key is getting him to run hard like that every play. He was breaking tackles and dragging guys along for the ride. It was fun to watch.”

On freshman receiver David Smith’s 6 catches for 122 yards and a 63 yard TD reception…

“Talk about a breakout game. There is a reason why he was the #1 recruit in the country last year. Yes, at 5-9 he’s small but the burners on him. We run a simple stick route and he’s the vertical guy. DaRon hits him and 63 yards later we have six. He’s going to be special. And don’t forget about Brandon Ball. Another freshman with speed and he caught that 39 yarder for six as well.”

On corner Andrew Barnes 11 tackle and one interception performance

"With Mike Burnett suspended we had to have people step up and Andrew was one of those guys. So nice to see him have a game like that and I hope it shuts some of those people up who constantly are on him for what happened in the BCS game two years ago.”

On playing the two’s in the second half…

Look, it be nice to go out there and pad some stats but what if we lose DaRon or Doug? We don’t have the depth to withstand a hit like that. And as for the defence, three quarters was enough for them. We got a good look at a lot of guys in the fourth quarter.”

On some of the performances of youngsters in the second half…

“It was very encouraging. Jamal Fields for a pick six for 79 yards was eye-opening. Manuel Logan at running back looked good (29 yards on 7 carries). Thought Alfonso (Morris) could have been sharper at quarterback. I think he was 8 for 17 for 105. Tyrone Roberson is a beast. He’s an athlete who we put at linebacker and all he does is come in have four tackles – three of which were for losses. We’re really intrigued by him.”
