Time Machine to 2002 | Los Angeles Outlaws | Madden 08 with 2002 Rosters

    Franchise Overview

The Scenario: In 2002, The NFL saw the addition of the Houston Texans. In this franchise, were going to use a time machine and re-imagine what could have happened. We're going to pretend that in 1999, Cleveland didn't get a 3rd installment of the Browns. Instead, the 2002 Houston Texans were one team picked to be an expansion as well as the original front runner, Los Angeles. I have collected a lot of data and put a lot of time into the creation of this franchise. Without further ado; The 2002 Los Angeles Outlaws.

    2002 NFL Expansion Draft
    February 18, 2002

Each NFL team listed five players that expansion teams could select and the franchises were required to claim either 30 players or $27.2 million in contracts (38% of the 2002 salary cap). Teams are prohibited from selecting a player from a team and trading the player back to that club. Existing teams are not allowed to put punters or kickers on the list, nor any player from their 2001 roster who would have become an unrestricted free agent in 2002. They cannot list players who went on injured reserve during the 2001 summer's training camp nor any player who would become a restricted free agent after the 2001 season. Teams will flip a coin for the first pick in the expansion draft, the team that loses will pick first in the NFL draft. During the expansion draft, teams will flip picks every 5 rounds. The teams will assume the contracts of the players they selected, including all future portions of their signing bonuses and any guarantees or other terms. Those selected received $10,000 immediately, an additional $20,000 bonus for reporting to training camp, and another $30,000 for making the active roster during the regular season.

        2002 NFL Draft Results:

        1. RB William Green - Boston College - Green had 501 carries for 2,974 yards and 44 touchdown as well as 31 receptions for 343 yards and 3 touchdowns during his time at Boston College. Many thought he would fall much later than 2 with his suspensions for marijuana usage, but he was a top prospect in the draft. This team will go as far as Green will carry them this year if he gets the nod over RB Reuben Droughns who was selected in the expansion draft.

        2. WR Andre Davis - Virginia Tech - Davis amassed over 2,300 yards on 122 for 23 touchdowns through 4 years at Virginia Tech. The NCAA awarded him a "Todays Top VIII" award for his work during the season. He is a smart receiver who will make huge plays if given the opportunity.

        3. C Melvin Fowler - Maryland - Fowler did not allow a quarterback sack in the four years as a starter at the University of Maryland. He took over center duties in his redshirt freshman year, despite having practiced at that position for only 10 days before earning the starting job. He is a model of consistency that started every game (44) he played in for Maryland.

        4. LB Kevin Bentley - Northwestern - Bentley is a big play linebacker who has a knack for forcing turnovers. He had a 95 yard fumble return touchdown in his senior year. Bentley started 34 games in college and hopes to bring his big play ability to the NFL.

        5. LB Ben Taylor - Virginia Tech - Taylor played both linebacker and punter for VT. He too had a knack for forcing turnovers and turning them into points. He started all 22 games he played for the Hokies.

        6. TE Darnell Sanders - Ohio State - Sanders played in 36 games with 23 starts at Ohio State University and finished his career with 42 catches for 474 yards and 9 touchdowns. Sanders is good in open field and finds ways to get open.

        7. LB Andra Davis - Florida - During Davis' college career, he played in 35 games, and started 23 of them; he finished his career with 232 tackles, 5 quarterback sacks and 4 forced fumbles, 3 of which were recovered. As a senior team captain in 2001, he was recognized as a first-team All-SEC selection and a second-team All-American.

7c. OT Joaquin Gonzalez - Miami - Gonzalez is a national champion winning tackle who was twice named a first team all-American. He won the 'William V. Campbell Trophy' last year which is an award for the college player with the best combination of academics, community service and on the field performance.

            Players Arrive in L.A.

The players selected by the Outlaws in both the expansion draft and the NFL draft arrived in Los Angeles today to have a look around the facilities. Receivers Keenan McCardell and Andre Davis spent most of the day running route trees and comparing stories. The teams projected starting quarterback Jeff Blake went on the practice field and threw to some of the receivers. All seems to be looking up for the Outlaws.

"I'm excited to be here, man. To be the first pick in an expansion draft feels a lot better than I thought it would. I can't wait to get on the field and start working with my offense as a whole." - Keenan McCardell

"It's weird, I never thought I'd be playing in LA this year. I definitely didn't think I'd get drafted so early but all the coaches say they know I'll be something special. I'm glad that my college suspensions didn't play that big a role in where I got drafted. I can't wait to get out here with vets like Keenan and Jeff and show them what I can do." - William Green

Many around the league are criticizing the Outlaws for drafting so many guys over 30. The team's general manager says he believes these guys still have some gas in the tank.

"Guys like Keenan and Jeff can really show our young offensive players how to be successful in the league. Keenan and Andre have already begun to develop a good relationship. With a guy like William Green in the back field with so much talent, but a lot of drama coming from college, we need true pro's like Keenan to show him the ropes and let his play do the talking. On the other side of the ball we have Willie McGinest, who's been to the big one, as well as Doug Evans who's been a great corner for years. Andra Davis has been talking to McGinest almost regularly before we even had this event. We hope it breeds success and we hope these guys stay a few years longer to help bring the new guys up to speed."

The Outlaws have a couple months until training camp to fill the rest of their roster. They have to bring in at least 20 more players off of waivers and the free agency list.

              2002 Outlaws Roster Revealed

The Outlaws filled their roster with both experience and young guys. Their biggest signings are guard Shaun O'Hara and safety Carnell Lake. Both play a tough brand of football that matches what the coaches and general manager want in their on the field product. Los Angeles also added rookies quarterback Quinn Grey, guard Mike Pucillo, defensive tackle Buck Gurley and punter Dirk Johnson. They believe they have a good mixture of experience and youth to win now and succeed for years to come.

Yes, were making pretend the browns didn't get another franchise in '99. So in 2002 the NFL added LA and Houston.

                    LA Dominates in Season Opener

Los Angeles was very impressive in their first game. In the seasons first Monday Night Football game, the tone was set on the first play of the game when Rookie LB Andra Davis had a 29 yard pick six. The Cowboys offense couldn't find anything that worked against the fired up Outlaws defense. LA's fans were in full effect, as you could barely hear in the stadium from the coin toss to the end of regulation. LB Davis also won player of the game with 12 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 forced fumble and a touchdown. An impressive showing on national TV that proved that LA could be a serious contender in their inaugural season. The Outlaws hope to keep it rolling as they face another division rival, the Seahawks, in next weeks match up.

LA Loses Close One in Seattle

The Outlaws weren't nearly as dominate in their road opener against Seattle as they were against Dallas. Quarterback Jeff Blake went down in the first quarter after a hard hit by Lofa Tatupu and was sidelined for the remainder of the game. Although the Outlaws defense was stout, they gave up a touchdown with 1:17 left that ultimately would be the dagger. LA travels to St Louis next week to face the best offense in the league.

LA Loses Shoot Out versus Rams

The Outlaws got out to a 21-0 lead early, but the high powered Rams quickly caught up. Kurt Warner put on a show passing for over 350 yards and 3 touchdowns. Both defenses were almost non-existent in this one. Fullback Donnell Bennett leads the NFL in YAC. The Outlaws do an amazing job of getting him open in space. Torry Holt had a big game grabbing 8 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. The Rams had a 4th quarter for the ages, forcing 2 turnovers and scoring 21 unanswered to end the game. LA has its 3rd divisional game of the year against the Raiders next week.
