Taking That (Uber) Ride To The Top - Bucs M19

    2017 Review:

In a year where the Buccaneers were expected to take the next step into the postseason, Tampa Bay took a big step backwards.

The Buccaneers endured two, five game losing streaks during the season as the team finished with a 5-11 record.

Quarterback Jameis Winston missed three games with a sprained AC joint in his shoulder. The shoulder continued to affected him the three games he started after the injury. When the injury healed, he was completing nearly 70% of his passes with eight touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Turnovers are still an issue for Winston as he threw 11 interceptions and lost seven fumbles. Running back Doug Martin was suspended for a total of four games during the year and gained less than 500 yards rushing for the fourth time in his six seasons. Tight end Cameron Brate is a big red zone target and tied for the team lead with six touchdowns. Wide receiver Mike Evans joined Randy Moss and A.J. Green as only the third player to have 1,000 yards receiving in each of their first four seasons. Desean Jackson could never get on track with Winston, catching only 50 passes and setting career lows in yards per catch. The offensive line finished the year with three starters on injured reserve.

The Bucs had high hopes for defensive end Noah Spence, but he tore the labrum in his shoulder which ended his season after three games. Tampa Bay was last in the league with just 22 sacks. Outside of defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, the defensive line was disappointing. An injured Robert Ayers managed just two sacks on the year and Chris Baker was out of shape and didn't gel well with the team. The linebackers remain one of the strongest units of this team. Lavonte David had a Pro Bowl worthy season, forcing and recovering five fumbles. It kind of sad to think that a 34 year old Brent Grimes is the team's best cornerback. Vernon Hargreaves took a big step backwards and lost his starting job to Ryan Smith.

The Buccaneers have a big problem at kicker. The team cut Roberto Aguayo in training camp after he showed zero signs of improvement. Nick Folk was then brought in, but landed on injured reserve. Patrick Murray was ok but was lousy from beyond 50 yards and also struggled on kick offs.

Despite ranking dead last in total defense, the team had two Pro Bowlers in defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and linebacker Kwon Alexander. McCoy made his sixth straight Pro Bowl appearance and led the team with six sacks. Despite missing four games due to injury, Alexander finished with just under 100 tackles and set a career high with three interceptions.

The rookie class offers a lot of promise for the future. Tight end O.J. Howard exceeded all expectations and tied for the team lead with six touchdowns. Free safety Justin Evans emerged as the starter, displaying great range to finish with a team leading three interceptions. Wide receiver Chris Goodwin should value on special teams and could have a bigger role in the offense thanks to his performance in the final two games of the year. Linebacker Kendell Beckwith was a nice mid round steal who can play at all three linebacker spots.

    Offseason

It was a big surprise to many that the Glazer family decided to keep head coach Dirk Koetter on after the 5-11 season. Maybe this would not have been the case if the team was successful in their pursuit of their former head coach Jon Gruden. Koetter also stated that he would retain defensive coordinator Mike Smith and offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Although Monken will no longer also coach the wide receivers.

On June 21, the NFL announced that it was planning to suspend Jameis Winston for the first three games of the 2018 season for allegedly groping a female Uber driver in 2016, with the number of games to be increased or decreased. On June 28, the official league statement came out.

The Bucs looked to shore up their OL, by moving the much maligned Ali Marpet back to his natural guard position and bringing in C Ryan Jensen, to anchor the line.

The much maligned defensive line got beefed up by trading for All-Pro and hometown kid Jason Pierre Paul. JPP returns to Raymond James Stadium, the same stadium he called home while playing college ball at USF. Pierre Paul return to form after a catastrophic hand injury nearly derailed his career, and had 8.0 sacks last year. While nowhere near his career best 16.5 sacks in a season, his 8.0 and career average of 7.5 still would've given him the lead on the Bucs anemic defense. In addition, the Bucs went all in on rebuilding their DL with the free agent signings of Super Bowl Champions DE Vinny Curry and DT Beau Allen from the Eagles, and added depth with the signing of DT Mitch Unrein. But, perhaps the biggest acquisition for the DL was hiring DL Coach Brenston Buckner, who promises more tenacity along the line

Notable Additions- DE Jason Pierre-Paul, K Chandler Catanzaro, DE Vinny Curry, DT Beau Allen, DT Mitch Unrein
Notable Departures- RB Doug Martin, DE Robert Ayers, DT Chris Baker, K Nick Folk, K Patrick Murray

    2018 Draft:

Going into the draft, the Buccaneers had to make some serious upgrades to key positions. Primarily at running back, defensive end, and cornerback.
Peyton Barber is the only running back on the roster who averaged 4.0 yards per carry. The offense needs a good balance between the passing game and running attack.

Noah Spence most likely won't be 100% by the time the season starts and we don't know how Jason Pierre-Paul will work in the defense. They can't finish last in the league in sacks again.

Brent Grimes will be 35 when the season starts and Vernon Hargreaves has regressed. The pass rush needs to help the coverage and vice versa.
On draft day, the Buccaneers traded back to the 12th overall pick with Buffalo so that the Bills could draft Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen. With the 12th pick, Tampa Bay ended up selecting Washington defensive tackle Vita Vea. Vea was viewed as the top run defending defensive tackle in this class, but his massive frame hinders his quickness and explosiveness.

The Bucs also notably drafted USC running Ronald Jones and Auburn cornerback Carlton Davis in the second round, and Pittsburgh safety Jordan Whitehead in the fourth. Jones was seen as the top outside runner in the draft, but lacks the power to drive through tackles. Davis has the long, athletic frame that NFL teams crave, but has moments of hesitation which leave him susceptible to giving up big plays. Whitehead was seen as the top man coverage safety in the draft, but lacks the ideal frame for the safety position.

    Outlook:

Considering the minimalist moves the team made in the offseason, I still think Tampa Bay will show improvement.

With a suspension to Jameis Winston confirmed, Ryan Fitzpatrick will likely be starting at least the first three games of the season. Fitzpatrick is a seasoned pro who is more than capable of managing the offense. Ronald Jones will likely be the feature back in the offense with Peyton Barber likely seeing a lot of playing time as well. On paper, the Buccaneers should have one of the most talented receiving corps in the league. Mike Evans and Chris Goodwin are the ideal outside receivers, Adam Humphries is a solid slot receiver, DeSean Jackson is the ultimate deep threat, and O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate are both mismatches in the red zone. The one problem to solve is how to keep all of those guys happy. The big concern is still the offensive line. Ali Marpet was not a fit at center before his injury. With Marpet moving back to his natural position, and the addition of Jensen, the line should be more stable than last year.

The defensive line should definitely generate more than 22 sacks on the year. A healthy Noah Spence would help, but having two monster defensive tackles in Gerald McCoy and Vita Vea should open up a lot of opportunities for Spence and Jason Pierre-Paul. If Kwon Alexander can remain healthy, the linebackers should remain one of the top units in the league. The way I see it Carlton Davis will likely play opposite Brent Grimes as Vernon Hargreaves may be better suited playing in the nickel for another season or at least until Grimes retires.

Looking at the NFC South, in which every team expect the Buccaneers made the playoffs, its hard to envision seeing Tampa Bay supplanting one of them and crawling out of the basement of the division.

Best Record They Can Hope For: 7-9

      Buccaneers vs. Dolphins Preview

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers plan to start backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on Thursday in their preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins (7 p.m. ET). Fitzpatrick will assume the starting role for the first three games of the season while Jameis Winston serves his three-game suspension.

The plan is for Fitzpatrick to play about a quarter to give him some reps, hopefully without exposing the 35-year-old to any unnecessary hits, which could be tricky, given the health of the Bucs' offensive line.

Winston is also expected to play a quarter. The bulk of Thursday night's work is expected to go to Ryan Griffin, who will be Fitzpatrick's backup for those first three games and has yet to throw a regular-season pass.

Expect a heavy dose of rookie RB Ronald Jones II, as Coach Koetter is excited to see the youngster in live-game action. The running back position is one to watch as the preseason progresses as the Bucs look to nail down an every down back from a list of Peyton Barber, Jones, Jacquizz Rodgers, and Charles Sims III.

Starting right tackle Demar Dotson isn't expected to play, as he's recovering from offseason knee surgery, and the training staff has been cautious in bringing him back.

Dotson won't be the only starter to miss the game, as the team is being cautious and also sitting Mike Evans, Gerald McCoy, Lavonte David, and Brent Grimes. Koetter expressed that this is a perfect opportunity for youngsters to step up, and signaled out Bobo Wilson, MJ Stewart, Carlton Davis, and Jack Cichy as guys that will be given extended looks in the game.

Re: Taking That (Uber) Ride To The Top - Bucs M19

Preseason Week 1: Buccaneers (0-0) at Dolphins (0-0)
Announcers: Chris Myers, Ronde Barber, and Jenna Laine

Chris Myers: The smells, the sights - Football is back, live from Miami as The Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on The Dolphins of Miami. Joining me all preseason long, as always, is the DB - Ronde Barber. Ronde, after an eventful offseason, what are you looking for from the Bucs during the preseason?

Ronde Barber: Well, we all know the issues concerning Jameis Winston, but as a defensive guy, I am interested to see how improved this defensive unit becomes. They brought in hometown guy Jason Pierre Paul, which should help take pressure off Gerald McCoy and help the young stable of linebackers. And, the rookies. Vita Vea, MJ Stewart, and Carlton Davis are an exciting group all coming in at the same time. It should be exciting.

Myers: MJ Stewart is already being compared to a certain broadcast colleague of mine.

        Barber: I like the kid.

Myers:Joining us this year down on the sidelines is ESPN Bucs Beat Reporter Jenna Laine. Jenna what can you tell us to expect for this first game?

Jenna Laine:Coach Dirk Koetter has told me that the quarterback rotation will be closely monitored. Jameis Winston, as everyone knows, will be suspended for the first 3 games of the season, so veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will be the starter going into the season. That means he will get all the first team reps. Jameis Winston will come in second, but the team doesn't want jeopardize their franchise QB's health with second and third string guys getting playing time. Complicating matters is what to do with 3rd string QB Ryan Griffin, who the coaching staff really likes. He will go into the season as the primary backup, and don't want to see him go down to injury. We should see a lot of undrafted free agent Austin Allen from Arkansas.

Miami - The preseason began with a Tampa Bay win, although Tampa's QB situation going into the season still remains murky, as Ryan Fitzpatrick didn't inspire much confidence in his first game action throwing 2 interceptions with his first quarter playing time. Fitzpatrick, though, was under pressure in the first quarter with rookie Alex Cappa and Mike Liedtke getting the start. Cappa is battling veteran Evan Smith for playing time, while Mike Liedtke got the start with Demar Dotson sitting do to an injury. Fitzpatrick was sacked twice, once from offseason acquisition Robert Quinn and once from former Buccaneer Akeem Spence.

        -
However, the Bucs defense got off to a hot start with Mitch Unrein able to sack Ryan Tannehill in the end zone, pumping up new DL Coach Brenston Buckner. Unrein got the start with Gerald McCoy getting the night off. The rest of the defense was stout throughout the first 3 quarters of play, surrendering only two FG's.

Once the backups to the backups came in, Miami was able to air the ball out, as Brock Osweiler threw two late TDs to rookie Kallen Ballage and Isiah Ford.

The Bucs opened up the second half with an extended drive lead by Ryan Griffin that ended with a 17 yard pass and catch to TE Anthony Auclair. Late in the 4th, with Miami keeping it close, a pair of rookie free agents stepped up as QB Austin Allen showed poise, and RB Dare Ogunbowale breaking off for a 18 yard run, and followed it up with a 4 yard rush into the end zone.

Game Notes: Rookie QB Austin Allen ended the night with a stat line of 3/4 , 39 yards, 0 int, 0 td..... Last seasons Hard Knocks fan favorite Riley Bullough got extended playing time and ended up grabbing a Brock Osweiler pass out of the air.... The Bucs kicking recent kicking woes seems to have stabilized with the addition of Chandler Canntanzaro who went 2-2.....For Miami, free agent acquisition Albert Wilson made a strong case for a starter job grabbing 3 catches for 64 yards. Wilson is battling Devante Parker, Kenny Stills, and Isiah Ford (4/67/1 td) for playing time.....Ryan Tannehill looked rusty, coming off of ACL surgery, but embattled QB Brock Osweiler showed some poise by throwing two fourth quarter TDs.

Injuries: None were reported for either team

Rookie Watch: Justin Watson made a spectacular 47 yard catch and run play in the 3rd quarter, leaping over Dolphin Terry McTyer……. Minkah Fitzpatrick got the start, and the rookie showed why the Dolphins took him, by picking off Ryan Fitzpatrick.... MJ Stewart and Carlton Davis both showed poise and could challenge Vernon Hargreaves III for the chance to be the opening day starter opposite Brent Grimes...While Stewart and Davis made plays, safety Jordan Whitehead got beat by Isiah Ford for a 34 yard catch. Whitehead is trying to supplant Keith Tandy and Josh Robinson for a backup safety job...

Quotable: "It felt good to be out there, competing. I have a lot to prove to myself and to my teammates " - Jameis Winston..... "I am just trying to compete and show this staff that I belong." - Rookie RB Dare Ogunbowale after leading the Bucs with 32 yards rushing and a 4th quarter TD

Gerald McCoy Injured At Practice: Will Miss The Rest Of The Preseason

Tampa - Buccaneers All-Pro DT Gerald McCoy broke several ribs during a nasty collision at practice today. McCoy, who collided with DE's Noah Spence and Will Clarke IV, was able to walk off the practice field, but was seen riding on a golf cart to get examined. It was later revealed that he broke 3 ribs on his left side, while also bruising his sternum. Coach Dirk Koetter later told reporters that McCoy would miss the remainder of the preseason, but should be ready to go week 1 against New Orleans. This is a blow for the Bucs defensive line, that could see 3 new starters.

"Gerald is a pro. JPP, Curry, Big Mitch, Beau...They are all pro's...Yes, they do need to gel and get to know each other's tendencies...But, we're all pros....We will make it work" said new DL Coach Brenston Buckner.

With McCoy out, expect to see more Beau Allen and rookie Vita Vea. Mitch Unrein, brought in from Chicago, seems to have locked down one starting position, with Vita Vea expected to supplant him at some point during the season. Now, it looks like Vea could be in line for more playing time with McCoy sidelined. Another option could be seeing Will Gholston move inside, something he's done throughout his career, but the Bucs seem to like the depth he brings to the end position.

          Buccaneers - Titans Preview

With the exception of the late addition of Gerald McCoy to the injury report, expect to see a healthy slate of players Saturday night, on both sidelines. Coaches want to see how Ryan Fitzpatrick responds to a subpar game against the Dolphins, as he prepares to become the starter for at least the first 3 games of the season. Expect Fitzpatrick to play at least the first half against an improved Titans defense.

With 5 RB's on the roster, the competition for carries will heat up on Saturday with rookie Ronald Jones II, Peyton Barber, Jacquizz Rodgers, Charles Sims III, and emerging Dare Ogunbowale all in line for carriers. Teams typically keep 3 backs on the roster, so it will be interesting to see how the carries are divided up.

Mike Evans and Desean Jackson will see their first game action, and will be tested against a defense that carries Adoree Jackson, Kevin Byard, and new addition Malcom Butler.

Coaches want to see more from their backups on defense, especially rookie safety Jordan Whitehead, who was routinely burned against the Dolphins and has been shaky in practice.

As for the Titans, the team thinks it has improved on last years playoff team, and has every intention of going back this year. Despite losing Demarco Murray to retirement, the team brought in Dion Lewis while also rostering the emerging Derrick Henry. WR Corey Davis looks to build off of a breakout playoff game and rebound from a disappointing rookie campaign.

Preseason Week 2: Buccaneers (1-0) at Titans (1-0)
Announcers: Chris Myers, Ronde Barber, and Jenna Laine

Chris Myers: Hello, and welcome to week 2 of the preseason!! The Buccaneers are in Tennessee for a matchup with the Titans!! Ronde, what are you looking for in this game?

Ronde: We need to see some improvement from Ryan Fitzpatrick. It's going to be the Fitzpatrick show for the first three weeks of the season, and we need to see some consistency in these preseason games. Also, with Gerald McCoy missing the rest of the preseason, I want to see how the depth responds. I want to see the big rookie Vita Vea let loose and take the game over. Have a big game, rook!

Myers: Speaking of McCoy, let's go down to the sidelines and check in with Jenna Laine.

Jenna Laine: Thanks, Chris. As we all found out this week, All Pro DT Gerald McCoy broke some ribs and will be out the rest of the preseason. Coaches want to see how guys like Vita Vea and Beau Allen respond in additional game minutes. In addition, they still have Devante Lambert and could rotate ends Will Gholston and Patrick O'Connor inside.

Tennessee - Despite a strong first 3 quarters of play, the Bucs lost on Saturday night, thanks in part to a defense that is showing some serious depth concerns. With All Pro DT Gerald McCoy staying behind in Tampa, the interior of the defensive line saw heralded rookie Vita Vea and free agent acquisition Beau Allen both leave the game. The Titans OL mauled the Bucs DL, which caused the rest of the defense to overcompensate, causing big holes late in the game. The depth at LB was tested, as Tennessee was able to exploit TE Jonnu Smith against the seams and holes that Tampa's zone defense opens up. LB's Jack Cichy, Riley Bullough, Nigel Harris, and Devante Bond looked lost as the game wore on, and Smith kept tallying yards on dump off passes.

Ryan Fitzpatrick, looking to rebound from a 2 interception performance against Miami, threw 2 more. Tennessee's DL was running down the QB from the start, attacking rookie guard Alex Cappa with precision, and ended up with 5 total sacks. Fitzpatrick did connect with Mike Evans on a 7 yard pass for a score, but threw 2 questionable passes that ended up in the hands of Adoree Jackson and Kenny Vaccaro.

Rookie RB Ronald Jones II looked explosive on a 67 yard rush, that for the most part represented the only memorable offensive highlight of the night.

Injury Report: Tampa: DT Beau Allen left the game after his ankle appeared to get rolled up in the first play. He didn't return, but coaches say he should be OK to play next Saturday against Detroit. DT Vita Vea injured his shoulder the next play after Allen went down, and also didn't return. Coaches are calling his injury day-to-day, and he could miss next week.

Tennessee: Titans saw both Dion Lewis and Derrick Henry leave the game with injuries. Henry tweaked his knee, and is considered day-to-day. Lewis, the free agent from New England, however could miss the start of the season after tearing an abdominal muscle after being chased down from behind by safety Keith Tandy

Rookie Watch: RB Dare Ogunbowale, despite a strong Week One performance, didn't get into the game. Jordan Whitehead made a strong tackle on Taywan Taylor, stopping a Titan drive in the 4th Quarter, and drew some praise from coaches after the game. QB Austin Allen didn't play.

Quotable: "Next man up" - DL Brenston Buckner when asked about depth at DT. "We need to do a better job of protecting Fitz." - HC Dirk Koetter after an abysmal performance along the OL

Looking For Depth, Bucs Sign LB Philip Wheeler

Tampa - Looking to shore up some depth on a defense that has historically struggled against defending tight ends, the Bucs have signed veteran LB Philip Wheeler to a one year contract.

"Philip brings leadership, is athletic enough to cover tight ends, and gives us options along the defense line." Said DC Mike Smith.

With DT's Gerald McCoy, Vita Vea, and Beau Allen all dealing with injuries the Bucs are looking to slide Will Gholston and Patrick O'Connor to the inside, where they only have two healthy DTs (Mitch Unrein and DeVante Lambert). Wheeler could then provide some depth at DE, where he could help with the pass rush.

To make room on the roster foe Wheeler, the Bucs waived G Givens Price in a corresponding move.
