Escape from the Dawg Pound - An Interactive Browns Franchise

Cleveland, OH - In a shocking move today it was announced that the Cleveland Browns would be parting ways before the preseason with head coach Hue Jackson. Acting quickly the team has brought in college D3 coaching legend Anthony Paress to replace him. Coach Paress led the Saint Hopkins Blue Jays to an 10-2 season during their one stint in D1-A. He has a history of finding undervalued players in the draft and free agency and getting the most out of them. Could this be the change the Browns need?

Since resuming operations in 1999, the Browns have struggled to find success. They have had only two winning seasons (2002,2007), one playoff appearance (2002), and no playoff wins. Through the end of the 2017 season, the Browns' win–loss record since returning to the NFL is 88–216. They're officially in the real Dawg Pound, a place they so affectionately call their fan section. If Cleveland can't find success soon, whose to say the franchise can survive.

Cleveland, OH - Coach Paress has gotten straight to work signing undrafted rookie free agents. The following are the list of players that will be hoping to make their NFL dreams come true.

SS Jason Davis - A hard hitting zone safety, Davis stands at 6'1" and weighs in at 222 lbs. A graduate of USF he has a quiet nature off the field but is known for his reckless play on the field. In his final season at USF he was flagged for hitting a defenseless receiver 5 times resulting in 1 game ejection.

HB DJ Porter - A powerful north-south runner out of Michigan, Porter stands at 6' and weighs 251 lbs. He is known mostly for his locker room quarrels and incredible stiff arm.

K Spud Guthrie - A power kicker from Princeton, Guthrie is the NFL's version of Pee-Wee Herman. Very outgoing and team driven guy but also extremely unorthodox.

K P.T. Vanderberg III - Another power kicker this time coming from Yale. If PT3 can figure out how to locate the uprights he could become a very good kicker one day. Right now though, more of a kickoff specialist with a cannon for a leg.

FS Josh Garcia - Aggressive safeties seem to be the trend with Coach Paress. Garcia is a 5'10", 195 lb rocket on the field. Known for attacking the ball carriers and the ball this safety out of LSU will have to develop some discipline.

WR Brent Stewart - Speedy receiver who could develop into a slot guy, Stewart is a 5'9" 182 lb guy who lacks size. Paress must have seen something in his Mississippi State tapes to be willing to give him a shot.

MLB Stafford Royal - A solid tackler who lacks speed, Royal stands in at 6'8" and 253 lbs. He could show the flashes of brilliance against the run that he did in Miami but not expected to do much else.

CB Mario Ruiz Jr. - A good man coverage player with a loud mouth, Ruiz Jr. stands in at 6'1" and 201 lbs. Affectionately known as Super Mario, the UCLA graduate will have a long way to climb on this team.

QB Rico Ruiz III - Keeping with the family, Paress takes a chance on another Ruiz player. Rico is a scrambling quarterback with a strong arm but a history of off field issues and continued use of marijuana. From UCLA, at 6'3" and 215 lbs. can he clean up his act and make the team?

CLEVELAND, OH - Well I guess it should have been expected, following the signing of some NFL hopefuls Coach Paress announced his week one preseason cuts before the game. When asked about it, he had this to say,

"Honestly I made the moves I did to allow us more time to see the guys I want to see. It doesn't make sense to sign these kids and then toss them on the bench the whole time. I want to see them in live game action, I want to see them taking reps with the second and third team. We are in a massive rebuild so we need to stop hiding behind this idea that the guys we already had are going to make us competition ready."

          The cuts are as follows:

CB Denzel Rice (3 year player)
CB Michael Jordan (2 year player)
WR Jeff Janis (4 year player, 905k cap space)
TE Charley Hughlett (4 year player, 590k cap space)
TE Orson Charles (6 year player, 790k cap space)
LT Greg Robinson (4 year player, 790k cap space)
FS Derron Smith (3 year player, 700k cap space)
RG Spencer Drango (2 year player, 500k cap space)

CLEVELAND, OH - Cleveland shows a flash of brilliance in today's preseason showing against the New York Giants. We shouldn't read too much into this but it is the first win Cleveland fans have seen in the last 17 games.

Coach Paress looked like a man who knew how to manage a game and a team. Newly signed players made their presence known as Brent Stewart took a 65 yard pass to the house and DJ Porter was handed the rock to run the clock out in the 4th quarter.

If there is something to fear, it would be that the Cleveland secondary looked lost out there at some points. One might say that the game was out of reach and they relaxed too much. However, this game ended up being 27-25 and relaxing is not something fans like to see out of a team that went 0-16 last year. So from all of us here in Cleveland, "Coach Paress you bum, keep the pedal to the floor!!"

CLEVELAND, OH - Brent Stewart is one of what's being called the Fresh-Sign-Nine, a group of rookies brought on by Coach Paress to try and provide opportunity on the Browns. Stewart debuted with a great first showing in the preseason after a very strong week of practice that saw him playing with the second team. We caught up with him for a quick word.

Brent, you are one of the guys we were told to keep an eye on making the roster and tonight you had the big touchdown. With your performance tonight, do you think this improved your chances?

Stewart: "Well, to be in this league you gotta come up big and I think that's what I did tonight. I'm grateful to be given an opportunity to play for this organization and tonight showed why my play will help this team."

We also took a moment to ask Coach Paress about Stewart,

Paress: "You know it's early to make snap judgements. I will say he is a hard worker, he shows up early and leaves late. All the things a coach likes to see, he's put the effort in and that's what this chance is about. Who has the grit to grind it out, who has the heart to take the lumps. Right now he looks like he is willing, as do a lot of these young men. We will see what happens."

CLEVELAND WINS AGAIN, FRESH-SIGN-NINE SHINE SPOTLIGHT ON DJ PORTER AND VANDERBERG III

CLEVELAND, OH - Another game that means little to nothing but encouraging nonetheless. Cleveland offense tonight failed to show up but the defense sure did. The Browns continue to take the ball away on a regular basis while also managing to protect it on the other side.

The Browns trailed until late in the 4th quarter when Baker Mayfield would find a wide open Porter on the corner of the endzone. After a big stop by the Cleveland defense, Mayfield would again show poise beyond his years as he marched his team up the field for the game winning FG. This would be the most important showing by the Fresh-Sign-Nine as Coach Paress sent out rookie kicker P.T. Vanderberg III. He connected on his one opportunity and helped the Browns to a 2-0 preseason start.

INTRODUCING TWO MORE OF THE FRESH-SIGN-NINE, DJ PORTER AND P.T. VANDERBERG III

CLEVELAND, OH - A small story that is beginning to shine a spotlight of hope in what is the chasm of despair here in Cleveland. Lebron leaves and the Browns lose, the endless spiral we all live in. However, the feel good story of these nine young men just may be the glimmer of hope we have been asking for.

We first caught up with DJ Porter, the young HB who has been fighting for secondary touches behind Carlos Hyde. In a limited appearance Porter has 7 carries, 24 yards, 3.4 average yards per carry, 1 catch, and 1 TD. The touchdown occurred in yesterday's game against the Buffalo Bills.

Porter: "The receiving touchdown I really just needed an opportunity to show that part of my game. I didn't get many chances in college. People don't expect that part of my game or whatever when they see me. Never really ran routes in college but coach Haley saw what I could do and wanted to get that in the playbook so yeah, there it is."

It also sounded like he thinks he should be further ahead on the depth chart but isn't getting the effort he needs out of the second team.

Porter: "You know it's been tough going for me in the running game. There's been some struggles there. I need more touches that way to really get going and maybe some changes or better effort from those guys up front."

Our second insight will be into the mind of kicker P.T. Vanderberg III. The young kicker was given his first chance at attempting a field goal last night and he succeeded. Not only was it his first attempt, but it was in a critical situation with the game on the line. Goes to show the faith Coach Paress is willing to give to these rookies he brought in.

Vanderberg: "It was great to swing my leg out there a little bit tonight, especially in such a big spot to give us the win. Coach Paress had faith in me being able to drill it and that's an awesome feeling. It's good experience for when I have kicks like this in the regular season."

When asked if he thought he had a chance to make it on this team,

Vanderberg: "I've had a great camp so far, and I think I've shown that I can be a reliable kicker in this league."

COACH PARESS ADDS TO THE FRESH-SIGN-NINE BRINGING IN ROOKIE TE NATHANIEL HARRIS

CLEVELAND, OH - Coach Paress has struck again, he recently acquired the service of free agent TE Nathaniel Harris. Harris, a graduate of FIU is 6'6" and weighs 251 lbs. When asked about the decision Paress had this to say,

Paress: "Harris is a guy I had my eye on during the initial signings but we had a lot of depth there at TE. Over the course of the last two weeks what we have really lacked is the ability to block out of the TE position. Harris was brought in as a specialist in that department. Anything we can get out of him beyond that is just pure bonus but I am confident he can help us get the run game to the next level."

Paress signed Harris to a 1 year deal and made the corresponding move to release LG Fred Luina.

CLEVELAND WINS AGAIN WITH BOOT FROM VANDERBERG III

CLEVELAND, OH - It was another thrilling preseason game that is giving hope to all the Cleveland faithful. Today's game gave a clear look at who would be the starters to open the season and who will still be battling for a roster spot.

The starters played for 3 quarters today and managed to hang with the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles. Tyrod Taylor appears to have secured the starting quarterback job to open the season but Baker Mayfield will be hot on his heals.

The biggest news of the game must be the injury to Carlos Hyde. He has yet to be evaluated by it is expected he will be out several weeks. This could give rise to young backup DJ Porter who has been looking to receive a few more snaps. It will be interesting to see how much of the workload he gets next week.

Finally, Cleveland took a look at their kickers today with Spud Guthrie and P.T. Vanderberg III. Guthrie made 2 FG's but missed from about 48 yards out. When it came time for the kick to win the game Coach Paress once again called on the leg of Vanderberg who delivered for the second week in a row. It will be interesting to see who makes the team and the plan for the season at the position.

Are you planning on starting Baker as a rookie or letting him sit for a year behind Tyrod Taylor?

My plan is to stay along the lines on Cleveland right now and let Taylor start and integrate Mayfield in during the season. Basically give him some drives when we are way up or down and then when it's right turn the team over to him.
